hill. >> insurgents take over saddam hussein's hometown. and did a pile of snow turn the tide in the stanley cup final. the shot that has rangers fans hoping it can all turn around. this is "way too early." >> hey, there, everybody. i'm thomas roberts. it's thursday, june 12th. welcome to way too early. the show that didn't crack forbe's list of highest paid athletes. but that's okay because none of us are actually athletes unless you count duck pin bowling. nobody did that? yes, okay. we have a whole crowd of duck pinners here. let's get to business as we start out with iraq. we have 11 years after american troops arrived in baghdad that
2:31 am
city is facing the threat of a new invasion from some of the same insurgents they spent a decade fighting. they're toppling major cities with stunning speed and now fighters are vowing to march all the way to the capital. their goal is to establish an islamic state that is across iraq and syria. they already control huge portions of both countries. the group used to be known as al qaeda in iraq but was kicked out of the main terror organization for being too vicious. now, the fighters have teamed up with other factions to simultaneously battle the governments of iraq and syria as well as other rebels and as nbc's richard engle reports the conflict is erupting along sectarian lines posing a threat of a new civil war. >> why is this happening? suni's ruled iraq for 13 centuries until the u.s. invasion toppled saddam hussein ushering in a shiite regime.
2:32 am
the sunis hate the shiite government which excluded them from power and there's no u.s. troops around anymore to stop them. >> so as we speak the u.s. is weighing it's options to help the iraqi government whose soldiers largely fled the approaching fighters allowing their american made weapons to fall into enemy hands. so far the obama administration denied requests from baghdad to target the extremists with drone strikes. the prisoner exchange for bo bergdahl came under more scrutiny yesterday as chuck hagel testified on the bill. hagel admitted the administration had to make a tough call and could have handled it better but that didn't stop him from facing very tough questions. >> you're trying to tell me that he's being held in germany because of his medical condition. >> congressman, i hope you're not imlying anything other than that. >> i'm just asking the question mr. secretary. >> i'm going to give you an answer too. >> answer it. >> i don't like the implication
2:33 am
off the question. >> answer it. >> he is being held there because our medical professionals don't believe he is ready. >> have you ever seen a traumatically injured service member brought to the united states immediately upon being stabilize there? we do it all the time. >> this isn't just about a physical situation, congressman. this guy was held for almost five years in god know what is kind of conditions. >> so we also learned that bergdahl enlisted in the coast guard before joining the army. however the washington post is reporting he received an uncharacterized discharge for psychological reasons saying that he stayed just 26 days in basic training for the ghost guard. eric cantor will exit one of the most powerful offices in the land by the end of july. the house majority leader faced the press in the wake of a 12 digit drumming by dave brat who
2:34 am
had little outside support. the day at times was emotional for cantor. some members of congress said house speaker john boehner fought back tears during a meeting with the caucus. it played out all day long with some pointing to cantor's waffling on immigration reforms but many said he forgot his roots and virginia values despite working just miles down the road. a claim that cantor disputes. >> you know, i was in my district every week. so there's a balance between holding a leadership position and serving constituents at home but never was there a day did i not put the constituents of the 7th district of virginia first and i'll continue to do so. >> why shouldn't somebody be running scared at this point after unoprecedented loss by a majority leader.
2:35 am
>> all politics are local and there was a lot of attention cast on our race. i think our members are in good position in their districts. >> so now there is a rush to find his replacement. atop the short list, kevin mccarthy that got cantor's blessing and according to the washington post, robert costa, mccarthy is using a paper scoring system that dates back to the 90s, he's looking to get ahead of others like pete sessions of texas also said to be going for cantor's office. so dave brat's campaign manager, dave brat being the guy that beat cantor and having this campaign manager who is only, get this, 23 years old, it made us wonder what is your biggest accomplishment at that age? at 23 years old. tweet us your most creative answers at #waytooearly. we'll put them up later in the show. also we'll have more insight on the 23-year-old man behind the campaign. >> well, a bill that would fundamentally change how

americans pay off their college loans died in congress. the plan put forth by senator elizabeth warren failed to gain bipartisan traction. it would have aloud people with federal and private loans to refinance at lower rates. student debt skyrocketed to about 1.2 trillion and debt holders burden has gone up by 70%. but they said it was little more than an election year employ aimed at helping democrats keep the senate. >> we now know who is responsible for the school shooting in newtown. police identified the gunman as jared michael padgett. he arrived in an assault rifle hidden in a guitar case. he was in the rocker room when emilio hoffman walked in. he was shot twice in the chest. there was no known link between the two boys and it appears
2:37 am
hoffman was in the wrong place at the wrong time. despite being wounded, the teacher is praised for still initiating a school lock down. there's no doubt that his heroic action saved lives since the gunman was heavily armed. >> he used a rifle in the attack and carried but didn't use a semiautomatic handgun. investigators have also recovered nine loaded magazines with the capability of holding several hundred rounds. >> wow. well, finals are cancelled at the school and students will be allowed to return tomorrow to get any of their belongings before summertime. >> there's new developments in the las vegas shooting rampage that left five people dead. they released this chilling surveillance video from walmart that shows the footage of the two people. >> looks like they're shooting

at each other. she just shot him. the female suspect did just shoot the male. >> now, police originally stated that amanda miller shot and killed her husband jared miller before shooting herself but police now say something very different occurred. the bullet that killed jerad miller came from a police officer's rifle. they don't know yet which officer is responsible. >> let's shift gears and talk about business news for you today. business stocks retreated from all time highs yesterday as all three indices were in the red. it was the worst trading in some three weeks. jeff is live in london for us with more this morning. what goes up, must come down, correct? >> so it would seem and i said, think i yesterday that the air starting to get thin and maybe people are starting to think about that holiday to bermuda
2:39 am
rather than whether they're going to make money in stocks here. it's another wait and watch day because we have retail sales and claims numbers due. so we have trading activity in europe as people keep an eye on the data points coming out of the united states. these numbers have been gradually improving so people are expecting or economists are expecting some gradual improvement in this data set today but anything that disappoints could just be another trigger for some selling. i want to move on because there are a number of interesting stories out there. not least, phil mickelson in his on going fbi investigation into insider trading. it seems he is off the hook in terms of whether he engaged in insider trading practices in that stock. but the sec saying they don't see a smoking gun in that case. but of course there is still this business of dean that they're looking into. this is dean foods. this is another stock that there

was corporate activity around and it's thought that if there was anything that took place, carl is the guy that gave the information to phil mickelson. you wonder how this dwells on his mind as he goes into the start of the u.s. open today. it kicks off in pinehurst. i'm not sure he wants this backdrop to the start of his play today. it will be interesting to watch this game and how it begins in the gulf. >> you make such a great point if he can compartmentalize all of this in trying to start the u.s. open. real quickly, jeff, let's talk about amazon and the idea of it expanding it's footprint. now trying to do streaming music. >> yeah, it's a bit of a sweetener for those that have the prime service. amazon is huge in download already but they're starting off this subscriber service which will allow you to stream. right now it's pitched at the prime members but they won't get
2:41 am
the latest music. it will just be a lot of back catalog for the time being. you get the sense, though, this is amazon trying something to see whether it's worth rolling it out to other amazon users. back to you. >> maybe that will offset the up tick of what amazon prime is going to cost those people that liked it at such a cheaper rate. thank you. appreciate it. >> so we talk about living on the edge. take a peek at this. it's a 4,000 square foot home in texas in danger of falling off a 75 foot cliff into the lake. now the owners evacuated this home weeks ago when the cliff beneath it began collapsing and they started noticing these large cracks in their house. officials condemned a property and put up a sign warning people to stay away. this home is worth more than $700,000. but look at that. amazing. it was roughly like 60 yards away. you can see the treeline to the left there. that's where the original backyard was. still ahead on way too early,

the rangers using every edge they can to stay live in the stanley cup final. the play they hope will change the series. it has to do with a little snow right around there. and lebron may be down in the nba finals but his team reportedly has a plan to bring in added fire power in the off season and knicks fans may not be too happy about it. that story and a check on weather when way too early comes right back. >> the body of 34-year-old nicole brown simpson, ex-wife of o.j. simpson was found after midnight on the sidewalk outside her west los angeles home. next to it the body of an unidentified 26-year-old man. both had apparently been stabbed. ♪
