where we find nbc's jay gray. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning, betty. it's been a long, difficult and controversial trip back but this morning sergeant bowe bergdahl is back on american soil. the pentagon confirms r sergeant bowe bergdahl traveled overnight from germany to san antonio where he will begin the next phase of his rehabilitation and recovery. army doctors say bergdahl is getting better physically but needs more time to recover emotionally and psychologically after being held for five years by the taliban as a prisoner of war. during his captivity, e he reportedly spent time in solitary confinement and endured physical torture. as his treatment shifts to san antonio, the fire storm of

controversy over his release seems to be growing. soldiers in his unit say he deserted his post and continues to be bipartisan outrage that the administration agreed to a deal to e free five guantanamo bay prisoners for bergdahl's release without consulting congress. >> the transfers went ahead with no consultation, totally not following the law. >> the exchange needed to take place quickly, efficiently and quietly. we believe this exchange was our last, best opportunity to free him. >> reporter: and now for the first time in five years, sergeant bowe bergdahl is back on u.s. soil. he's expected to stay here at the medical center for at least a week to ten days. that's the latest from san antonio, now pack to you. now to iraq where the battle

for baghdad looms. islamic militants are advancing towards the capital. president obama says he's wapging all options except ground troops. the escalating violence has sparked a humanitarian crisis there. half a million people have fled since the fighting erupted earlier this week. richard engel has more from iraq. >> reporter: some american veterans might be able to recognize their old humvees given to the iraqi army. some shattered, burned, taken over by a group of al qaeda called the islamic state in iraq and syria. they vowed to march on baghdad. they are only 100 miles away. and iraqi troops trained by the u.s. most are putting their hands up instead of on the trigger.

the goal is to impose strict law, not just in iraq but in syria and beyond. as the islamic militants advance, hundreds of thousands of iraqis are fleeing the area u. families looking for safer territory. they said they heard dpshts and had enough. what's happening to iraq, it's splitting apart r. in the west, the militants are taking over and being jiened by those nostalgic for saddam hussein. in the south, the u.s. supported shiite dpoft under prime minister maliki who excluded them from power. and the kurds are now taking it. there's also the issue of american contractors and diplom diplomats in this country. several thousand remain here. some contractors have already been given evacuation orders. several hundred have begun evacuating.

then there's the giant u.s. embassy in baghdad. this conflict is heading towards baghdad. the city is divided. sunnis on one side, shiites on the other. and the u.s. embassy is right in the middle. richard engel, nbc news, northern iraq. another refugee dilemma is brewing here in the u.s. hundreds of children continue to surge across america's southern border. tracie potts joins e me live from washington with more on this. this is a multilayered issue. how do you even begin to tackle this? >> the administration would argue you stem the flow of children coming into the country without their participant parents and the numbers are staggering. six times as many in a year as just two years ago. the administration trying to get a tough message out to parents

iraq. i think a lot of focus on the m administration's foreign policy positions. >> a lot of people want answers. here's something interesting, do you expect bergdahl to finally speak with his family? i found it interest iing he hast until now even though he was given the opportunity to do so back in germany. >> that's a great question. i think it's one that a lot of political watchers and americans have. but i think, again, there's so much going on with his recovery and i think for the officials that's sort of their first priority. but from a congress standpoint, i think all of the precedent that this sets, again, for how this was negotiated, a lot of questions coming from both sides of the aisle. this is not just a tea party or republican issue. we're seeing other top democrats including dianne feinstein raise ing a lot of significant questions about the nature in which this deal went down. >> quickly, i want to get to this. the tinderbox that looms in iraq. the president is promising he
