dance. speaking of headlines, hillary clinton's marriage equality stances and rick perry turning heads with sexuality and alcoholics. . iraq on the brink. militants continue to seize major cities. will president obama respond by reengaging resources. this is "way too early." good morning, i'm thomas roberts. it's friday, june 13th, friday the 13th. welcome to "way too early," the show that thinks friday the 13th doesn't sound that scary in june. doesn't sound that scary in june, it just doesn't. jen says it's a full moon. unless you go to sleep away camp, then it's really scary. we're going to check with bill karins on the facts about a full

moon coming up. want to make sure that's correct. let's get to the top story this is morning. can you tell it's friday? in many ways, there r no longer separate conflicts in iraq and syria but one sweeping insurgency ripping through the region. the group at the center of the fighting is taking aim at baghdad. the government is struggling to keep the country together. thousands of shiite civilians are pledging to fight back against sunni militants setting the stage for a civil war split along religious lines. shiite volunteers would fill the vacuum left by the iraqi armed forces, many of whom dropped their u waep weps and the scattered. several soldiers are wearing street clothes to make for a quick escape. in the cities overrun, the militants have banned cigarettes and alcohol and ordered women to stay indoors. they are threatening to kill anyone who doesn't renounce the government. iraq is sending in reenforcements to battle the

extremists. it's a serious crisis for the obama administration, which is groping for a response. president obama is considering air strikes, which would essentially reengage america in a war he declared over in 2011. want to bring in amon dean. as we compare this to the iraqi armed forces to the hundreds of militant insurgents, it's a big difference. >> absolutely. that's what's catching a lot of people by surprise. you have this iraqi army trained by americans that have melted away. going forward there's going to be a two-pronged approach. the government needs to get its act together. the prime minister needs to try to form an inclusive government. that's one that does not

alienate the population, which is where a lot of the recruits are coming from. but there has to be a solid military response to stop the offensive by the militants from going any further into some of these popular cities including baghdad. so it has to be a two-pronged approach and it starts with the prime minister trying to put together an inclusive government, not just a shiite-led one. >> explain to those watching, we know the american forces and the money we have invested in training iraqi forces for these people that are putting down their arms, are they being ab toshed by the militants or are they just walking away and not caring what's taking place? >> a little of both. in the northwest part of the country, those populations tend to be sunni arabs, which is what the military was. they put down their arms and

melted into the population because there's a ground swell of sympathetic support to the militants there. >> thank you, we'll talk later this morning. we want to know what you think, how america should be responding to the insurgence in iraq as the white house is considering its response. tweet us your most creative answers. we'll put the best ones on later. the public perception of the president is at an all-time low. both are viewed by 51% of americans as unfavorable. obama has a favorable rating of 47%. george bush's is at 46%. president clinton is viewed positively by 66% of americans. bowe bergdahl is back on american soil this morning. the former taliban prisoner landed safely in san antonio early yes today. the taliban freed him in a

controversial prisoner swap, something that's been criticize bid lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. he will stake at brook army medical center and not expected to make any public appearances during his reintegration process. he was recovering in germany. the military says he's not yet chosen to speak to his family. some of his fellow soldiers portrayed him as a deserter who walked off a base in afghanistan before he was captured. the pentagon says those e details will be investigated. two possible presidential candidates faced tough moments while talking about gay issues. rick perry offered a controversial take on being gay when he compared it to alcoholism. >> do you believe homosexuals can be cured by prayer or counselling? >> i don't know. i don't. i'm not a psychiatrist, i'm not a doctor. >> is it a disorder?

>> i wrote a book called "on my honor." i talked about that people make choices in life. and whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not, you have the ability to decide not to do that. and i made the point of talking about alcoholism. i may have the genetic coding that i'm included to be an alcoholic, but i have the desire not to do that. and i look at the homosexual issue as the same way. >> so terry gross went toe to toe with hillary clinton over clinton's evolution in marriage

equali equality. in 19939 the defense of marriage act signed by her husband opened the door for states to act. but hillary has evolved like many americans. >> you're saying your opinion on gay marriage changed? >> somebody is always first, terry. somebody is always out front in and thank goodness they are. but that doesn't mean that those bho join later, in being publicly supportive or even privately accepting, that there needs to be change, are any less committed. you could not be having the sweep of marriage equality across our country if nobody changed their mind and thank goodness so many of us have. >> so that's one for you changed your mind? >> i have to say, i think you are being very persistent, but you are playing with my words and playing with what is such an important issue. >> i'm just trying to clarify. >> i don't think you are trying to clarify. i think you're trying to say i

philips sonicare welcome back. let's get to sports. the world cup is underway and global celebration is brazil's national team attempts to win its sixth world cup. riots and labor strikes have been going on for months over the coast of hosting the soccer tournament. taxpayer money has been pumped into the world cup. money the protesters believe could have been used towards practical matters like education and medical services. hundreds of people took to the streets in four cities inwhere

protesters attempted to block traffic. the crowd was broken up using tear gas and smoke bombs. it was inside the stadium and significantly different singing the anthem of the world cup. moments later it was brazil's turn to take the field. things couldn't have started worse. brazil scores on a goal pulling them up 1-0. brazil would tie things up with a goal by international star. it would stay tied through halftime. we get our first world cup controversy. fred goes down in the box with minimal contact and the ref awards a penalty kick. so he converts to put brazil ahead 2-1 and never looked back win i winning the game 3-1. so other matches to keep yar eye on. spain kicking off against the netherlands.
