how's that for starting your day? good morning, everybody. we begin with breaking news. meteorologists are calling this a historic image that will be studied for years to come. twin tornados, side by side, creating a massive path of destruction. two people confirmed dead and 16 critically injured. folks in pilger, nebraska, are now digging out of the rubble. >> really incredibly strong tornado with a secondary wrapping around it. >> there was two of them, one right here and one coming right at us. >> one commissioner says more than half the town is gone, absolutely gone. that is where we find jay gray this morning. jay, what's the latest there. >> reporter: hey, good morning, betty. it's just overwhelming the devastation here. this is a snapped power pole here. and more debris, you can see the suv, or what's left of it there

mixed in with other things. and another power pole on the ground and look back, a lot of the debris, what's left, is covered in mud after what a lot of people have described as an almost surreal attack from mother nature. >> oh, another -- there's the other -- >> reporter: at first glance, it almost seems like science fiction. twin tornados side by side in eastern nebraska, destroying everything in their path. but the raw power and devastation from the storm is all too real. >> the village of pilger is basically what we would say, the majority of the village is destroyed. >> reporter: at least two people are dead, close to two dozen injured after the twisters ripped apart the small farming community of less than 400. >> it's just unbelievable. because you're just kind of in a state of shock. because it's -- you can't believe that it can be gone so fast. >> reporter: buildings, homes,

anything that was in the way of the tornados has been levelled. much of it tossed for miles. the rest, simply gone. >> no, it's total devastation. and our hearts and prayers go out to these folks. everything in our power, locally, and on the state and ultimately the federal level to get them back. >> reporter: though it's hard to know exactly where to start right now in a place where so much and so many lives have been left in ruins. yeah, really just an overwhelming task. now the governor of nebraska has declared a state of emergency. he plans to visit the battered community sometime later today. live in nebraska, i'm jay gray. back to you, betty. >> yeah, tough images. and meteorologist bill is seeing how today is shaping up. >> it won't be as bad as yesterday, guarantee you that. yesterday was historic. we don't have recorded video or

photos of two tornados that strong that close together. as far as a lot of meteorologists go, they have been doing this for a long, long time, no one remembers that. 32 tornado reports, 400 storm reports, awas hit, and davenport. and now severe thunderstorms rolling through northern illinois. we'll watch that as it approaches the chicago area. so the storms have weakened since last night. and a closer view of the milwaukee area shows you are in the clear now, at least for another hour or two, until another line of storms will roll through. so about today, 44 million people under the risk of severe storms from montana, south dakota, right through areas of iowa, unfortunately, where the flooding is horrible flu sioux falls and sioux city, milwaukee, detroit, towards pittsburgh and buffalo. 44 million people at risk of

severe storms. again, not strong tornados like yesterday, but even a weak one that goes through a town could be bad enough. >> we'll stay on top of that, thank you, bill. and the united states urgently deployed several hundred military personnel to iraq with more reinforcements on stand by. 170 troops arrived in iraq. president obama said that number could climb to 275. they will provide extra security for the u.s. embassy in baghdad. it comes as islamic imilitants seized a key northern town. and richard engle reports. >> reporter: these iraqi soldiers, prisoners of isis, in a video not verified by abc news, are being forced to swear allegiance to the al-qaeda offshoot that ran over their positions. one refuses, and is executed.

the others agreed, but later found dead. they are getting stronger, joined by supporters of saddam hussein and sunni tribal leaders. in mosul, they march together on the way to hang an iraqi soldier. this weekend, dozens of iraqi soldiers were led to their death. the iraqi army is now fighting back with air strikes and thousands of new recruits. but the insurgents have their sights on baghdad. and if they can't get to it, they may try to send in suicide bombers instead. as evening came, even fewer people around in the city of 7 million, bracing for a new round of sectarian war. perhaps the worst this country has of seen. iraq could be facing a very difficult period ahead. the government will likely try to retake the cities that have been taken by isis, the militant group. that means bombing civilian areas, using aircraft to drive

the militants from large population centers. that could get very bloody, with the shia government attacking sunni cities, likely responding with attacks in baghdad. this could be the start of a very long fight. richard engle, abc news, baghdad. the irs will face tough questions next week over the scandal involving thousands of missing e-mails. the tax agency will have to explain how they lost two years of e-mails from lois learner. she is at the center of an investigation that the agency unfairly targeted conservative groups. they said a computer glitch erased them, and the white house defends the irs saying they acted in good faith. house republicans demanded the irs release all e-mails from the obama administration, and accuse

them of acting on instructions from washington. the latest in sports. some said it couldn't be done, but the u.s. team beat ghana in a thriller of a game. >> dempsey, great start, clint dempsey scored! the u.s. ahead, incredibly, within seconds. >> oh, yeah, clint dempsey scoring just 32 seconds in. the fastest goal in u.s. world cup history. and the fifth-fastest goal overall. a strong start for the u.s., but injuries plagued the rest of the half. jozy altidore going down with a hamstring strain. and later bloodied after getting kicked in the nose. and ghana tested tim howard who protected the goal for 80 minutes. they tied it up, but minutes later this happens. >> what about that?
