cup. and this crew believes. we believe. couldn't you tell off the top of the show? everybody but jen believes. she just wasn't playing along with us today. but we will get her in a good mood in 30 minutes or less. i promise. but let's begin with the top story that we have for you today. it does concern what's taking place in iraq. the government there is focused on stamping out the insurgencin but not with the tactics favored by the obama administration. the prime minister is paying far more attention to the military mission against the extreme fighters. the "new york times" saying he spends most of the time on war strategy and not on the efforts of bringing together the competing sides. in fact members of his inner circle are wearing military uniforms instead of civilian clothes. and president obama is boosting security at the embassy in baghdad, employing more personnel. and outside, the sunni terror group is taking more ground.

it has the shi'ite leadership on edge, and raises the potential of washington and tehran working together to solve the crisis. secretary of state john kerry was asked about the potential for that yesterday. >> we're open to discussions if there's something constructive that can be crickontributed by . if iran is prepared to do something that's going to respect the integrity and sovereignty of iraq and the ability of the government to reform. >> can you see cooperating with iran militarily? >> at this moment, i think we need to go step by step and see what in fact might be a reality. but i wouldn't rule out anything that would be constructive to providing real stability, a respect for the substituticonst respect for the election process, and a respect for the ability of the iraqi people to form a government that represents all the interests of iraq.

>> all options on the table. and let's bring in our foreign corresponde correspondent. we know that nourry al maliki, and the war strategy is more the focus than bringing together the feuding sides. >> reporter: that's correct. by all indications on the ground. in from the perspective of the iraqi government is a war on terrorism. today, we're getting fresh reports of more fighting takes playing in the city just north of the capital, baghdad. why it's so important, it's 37 miles north of the capital. it's a straight shot down a single highway into the heart of baghdad. now the fighters we have been able to reach in and around the area have been giving initial reports that isis fighters are trying to take over the city but meeting stiff resistance from the iraqi army. if they manage to capture the city, this would be the closest the isis fighters are capable of

striking into the heart of the capital. they are mute when it comes to political reconciliation. we talk about the possibility that the u.s. and iran may be working together. one of the strongest regional l allies say they reject foreign intervention, and are not criticizing isis, but the blame lies squarely with the government. so it is a constant shifting of alliances and allegiances in iraq. >> reporting in iraq this morning, thank you. ukraine's president is proposing a cease fire in eastern ukraine. this move comes as russia's energy giant threatens to cut off gas to ukraine. they have missed a deadline, but it's seen to squeeze the fledgling government.

and overseas, israely students reportedly abducted, the search is intensifying. hamas appears to be involved in this kidnapping. israel has responded by arresting more than 150 people, including hamas activists and leaders. they have condemned both the kidnappings and israel's response. and deadly weather in the heartland. have you seen this? yesterday, extremely rare twin tornados struck nebraska. the headline put it dramatically, like god dragged two fingernails across the land. a 5-year-old was killed and at least 18 more injured. one of the tornados barrelled down the main street here. and the scope of the damage is immense. storm chaser posted these photos to instagram of the rare swtwin

funnels. the highway patrol closed all roads into the town. i want to bring in meteorologist bill carrons. and talk about the rarity of sister tornados and capturing it on film. >> we have had reports of three, even four on the ground at the same time. usually we have one big parent tornado with little ones kind of rotating around it and spinning around the main parent storm. this was two separate big tornados next to each other, within a mile of each other, and they both were spinning in counterclockwise direction. it was very strange. we have never seen anything like it. maybe back in 1965, a famous photo. maybe that was a similar case, but a still photo. we don't know the details. this has meteorologists scratching their heads. but the dangers and threats through today. yesterday, it was not just nebraska, it was southern minnesota and northern iowa. and now a new tornado watch up for areas of chicago all the way

up to milwaukee until 9:00 a.m. there's a line of storms that just went through the quad cities, severe wind gusts. a chance of producing isolated tornados in northern illinois. watch that, and new tornado threats, i'll bring them to you. >> appreciate it, thank you. want to update on this story. the calls for healing after the deadly shootings at uc santa barbara. and now new photos of the father of one of the slain students and the father of the shooter together. richard martinez and him met for a private conversation between grieving fathers. they plan to work together so other families won't suffer. at the time of that meeting they hadn't released the photos, these were released yesterday. president obama is heading to new york tonight to address the dnc's annual lgbt gala. one day after the white house announced he is preparing to take an historic step. planning to sign an executive

order prohibiting contractors from discriminating based on sexual orientation or gender identity. he pushed congress to approve this law, but right now there are no laws against people who ban those gaye gay and transgender. and another 3.3 million cars from gm recalled, a key design that could shut the car off in motion. no deaths to this recall, but it's similar to the defect earlier this year. and that's blamed for 13 deaths and 54 crashes. seven models, including buicks, chevrolets and cadillacs. they are going to rework or replace the keys to prevent inadvertent vehicle shutdowns. how is this going to impact the bottom line for gm? we have that part of the story. that's a big concern for gm.

the hits just keep on coming about these recalls. >> absolutely. this is really quite tough, thomas, for mary barra who only recently took over the company here. these are legacy issues she's having to work with, and so far, up to $2 billion in terms of the cost of the recalls. and that's 20 million cars and 44 recalled so far this year. but you know what's remarkable about this story is it's done very little in terms of damaging the share price. and there are still analysts out there who feel this could play in gms favor, because it's a clearing out of the bad news. it's a kitchen sinking, if you like. so short-term, a little bit of damage to the brand, but longer term, the analysts are relatively confident that this clean broom, this clean sweep, if you like, could play well for gm over the longer term here. so $2 billion and counting, but hopefully the longer term costs
