swrin ski. welcome to way too early, trying to get it right the first time. i didn't just then, and you know that, jen. in president obama's own words, the fate of iraq hangs in the balance. and the threat to american interests there, he's sending american soldiers back into the country. >> we have had advisers in iraq through our embassy, and we're prepared to send a small number of additional american military advisers, up to 300, to assess how we can best train, advise and support iraqi security forces going forward. american forces will not be returning to combat in iraq. we will be prepared to take targeted and precise military action if and when we determine that the situation on the ground requires it. if we do, i will consult closely with congress and leaders in iraq and in the region. >> it is a vexing position for an administration that has prided itself on ending u.s. involvement back in 2011. now the pentagon must thread the

sneelg needle on how to target a powerful sunni insurgency without appearing to take sides in a sectarian conflict with the shia. for the white house, the best solution is a reformed government that represents all sides. if the current prime minister won't do it, the president made clear, then somebody else should. >> now it's not the place for the united states to choose iraq's leaders. it is clear, though, that only leaders that can govern with an inclusive agenda are going to be able to truly bring the iraqi people together and help them through this crisis. >> let's bring in amin who's live in iraq with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the situation on the ground remains tense as isis fighters continue their push into areas where they have gained control. but really more strategically on their way towards baghdad. according to several sources we have been speaking to.

we spent the day with curkurdis fighters yesterday. they have been fighting isis militants, saying that the fighters themselves, although they are somewhat underequipped, they are determined, well-organized. and now they have access to some of the american fire power, they have been able to seize on military bases, they are determined to be make their way too baghdad. it give you a sense of the growing violence in this part of the country. but the iraqi army has been able to regroup. there are reports they have gathered 50,000 men just north of baghdad. they plan on ultimately launching an offensive. but one of the key issues, and this why the decision was important, it's impossible to advance without proper air cover. we have heard from that iraqi

and kurdish officials. they are surprised that the united states is not playing with a more robust role to soften the ground and allow for the iraqi army to regain the territory. >> thank you very much. an unlikely alliance of liberal democrats and libertarian republicans are pushing back against government surveillance. the amendment yesterday bars warrantless collection of online information. also preventing nsa access into commercial tech products. it's year after the snowden revelations. it was made despite objections from the obama administration. and scott walker, impacting his re-election chances and a potential run for president. according to newly released documents, the republican played a key role in a criminal scheme

to coordinate the fundraising of outside group focused on helping walker and others defeat recall efforts in 2011 and 2012. prosecutors say one e-mail from governor walker to karl rove highlighted how the chief campaign strategist was leading the alleged scheme. no charges have been filed yet, and he denies any wrong doing. >> but to look at the facts, the facts are clear. a judge at the state and federal level made it clear they didn't buy into the argument. they said to move on. and news emerged that governor walker is spending $250,000 on tv air time, but a tv source tells politico it was planned in advance and not connected to the investigation. governor walker is facing a tough re-election challenge from democrat mary burke.

and after eric cantor's primary loss, congressman kevin mccarthy will replace him as majority leader. the four-term congressman overwhelmingly defeated raul labrador of idaho. he's now the fastest house majority leader ever. and at 49 years old, also the youngest. and reflecting on his biography, he promised to put people before politics. >> they elected a guy who is a grandson of a cattle rancher work a son of a fire fighter. only in america do you get that opportunity. they elected a guy that's only grown up through the grassroots. they elected a guy that spent his time going around recruiting many of these individuals to get the majority. look, i've always had to struggle for whatever we wanted to overcome. i think that's the greatest part about america, that they always

giveout privilege and the opportunity. >> congressman steve scalise of indiana will replace him as majority whip. he won a three-way race. he chairs the conservative republican study subcommittee and had strong support from southern lawmakers. texas republican governor rick perry is acknowledging another moment he wishes he could take back. the possible 2016 candidate who infamously drew a blank in a 2012 presidential debate last week compared homosexuality to alcoholism. here's part of what he said. >> whether or not you feel compelled to follow a particular lifestyle or not, you have the ability to decide not to do that. and i made the point of talking about alcoholism. i may have the -- i may have the

genetic coding that i'm inclined to be an alcoholic, but i have the desire not to do that. and i look at the homosexual issue as the same way. >> governor perry now says he used a poor choice of words. at a christian science monitor event he said he stepped in it. i got asked about an issue, he said, and instead of saying we need to be respectful and tolera tolerant, and whether or not you're gay or straight, you're needing to have a job. governor perry isn't the only possible presidential candidate saying sorry for really stupid things. former montana governor brian shh wait jer is apologizing. he said that southern men, including republican congressman eric cantor are a little effemina effeminate, and that the

outgoing congressman set off his, quote, guydar. it's incredible. he used offensive language to discuss the relationship between the cia and diane fine stein. in a post on facebook, he said i made stupid and insensitive remarks. i'm sorry and apologize for my carelessness and disregard. okay. president obama is working with the mexican president to deal with the children crossing the border into the u.s. they hope to deal with the root causes of illegal immigration from central america. they also discussed how to safely return the minors to their families. more than 47,000 unaccompanied minors acrossed into the u.s. between october and may, most from central america. that's nearly double the number in the previous 12 months.

american? for a lot of ex-patriot americans overseas, it's high, they have suffered fines and harassment they feel from the irs. now the revenue service is going easier on the fines and some of the harsh language in the communications. this is increasingly encouraging citizens to get rid of their citizenship, it's felt. so the irs, being encouraged here to take a slightly softer line with those americans overseas. and i tell you, as an englishman, i feel sorry for you, you're one of the few countries that forces them to file from overseas. thank you. and still ahead, what could be the greatest victory dance of the world cup so far as colombia holding on to beat the ivory coast. and plus -- this mug shot has a lot of people talking this morning. we'll explain in the cooler.

early in the show, we told you california congressman kevin mccarthy is the new house majority leader after the overwhelming victory in the gop secret ballot vote. after finishing high school, he started a sandwich shot with $5,000 he won from a california lottery ticket. he would later sell the shop and use the profits to attend california state university. that's a good story. we're going to take a break from the keel cooler with a touching american story. a 23-year-old jumped on a

grenade to save someone in afghanistan. he's now the youngest living winner of the medal of honor. kyle carpenter shouldn't be alive, not cruising down an open road and run returning to cra classes at the university of california. >> i have been blessed with a second chance. >> he was just 21 when he earned the medal of honor. that's him in helmand province, where an enemy grenade exploded where he and another marine were standing guard. what was running through your head? >> i felt warm water, which was my blood. i thought about my family and how devastated and upset they were going to be that i was killed in afghanistan. >> he protected his best friend who's still recovering from his wounds. he woke up at walter reed six weeks later, eardrums blown out,
