captured america, the u.s. men's soccer team advancing to the round of 16 despite losing to germany, 1-0. a loss that's really a win for the game and the fans. nbc's kurt gregory has more. >> reporter: even before kickoff -- soccer fans gathered around the country to cheer on the u.s. men in their world cup match in germany. >> the growth of the support in this country is amazing. it's amazing to see people from everywhere gathering in support of the team. >> from chicago to charlotte -- >> this is our moment. >> new york to the nation's capital. from the east coast to the west. >> everyone can get behind the u.s. and have a great time and enjoy the game. >> with a single goal by germ y germany, this game didn't turn out quite like everyone had hoped, but it really didn't feel like a loss at all.

spitting at the officers. he was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespass. he's made headlines before. now, earlier this year you may recall he sported a paper bag over his head that read, i am not famous anymore during a red carpet event. reaction is just pouring in this morning after the supreme court issued two major rulings on thursday. first up, the high court decided to strike down a massachusetts law that was intended to limit protests outside abortion clinics. the state had previously passed the law saying there could be no protesting within 35 feet of clinic entrances. advocates say the court's decision to get rid of the buffer zone puts them in jeopardy. >> the law that the court just struck down worked well. it maintained public safety at our health centers and it is a disappointment. >> the obama administration which argued in defense of the buffer zone law released a statement following the supreme court's decision saying in part,

women have a right to get the health services they need without any fear of harassment or intimidation. as we made clear in our court filings, we believe that massachusetts' buffer zone law protected those rights in a common sense manner that also respected everyone's first amendment rights. now, abortion opponents are hailing the supreme court's decision as a victory saying it confirms that the first amendment is for everyone. a second major ruling by the supreme court scales back the president's power to make temporary appointments when the senate is in recess. the issue arose in 2012 after the president appointed three nominees on a labor board without senate confirmation. the high court says the president does not have the power to make recess appointments during any senate recess of ten days or more. it was a year ago today that the senate passed a bipartisan immigration reform bill. remember that? well, now, virtually everyone on capitol hill agrees it's dead. house republicans have effectively killed the bill by not bringing it up for a vote.

but the white house suggests president obama may act on his own. tracie potts reports from washington. >> democrats and republicans blame eric cantor's surprise loss. he was willing to let children of illegal immigrants stay in the u.s., but his opponent used that against him scaring off any other republican willing to compromise on immigration. >> their fear is greater than the reality, but they're quaking in their boots. >> even marco rubio, the son of immigrants who helped craft the compromise bill doubts there's any middle ground now. >> we're not going to award 12 million people citizenship and round up and deport 12 million people. >> this bill are 68. >> the compromise passed the senate but died in the republican-controlled house when leaders wouldn't bring it up for a vote. >> give us a sign, give us a vote. >> each day they don't act. each day they are killing it. >> the white house says despite the threat of a lawsuit over

the center of disease control found a staggering 1 in 10 deaths among adults may be linked to excessive drinking. researchers found that binge drinking, drinking underage or while pregnant was responsible for roughly 88,000 deaths between 2006 and 2010 and it could reduce your life span by as much as 30 years. the study defined binge drinking as five or more drinks in one sitting for men and four or more for women. shift gears now for sports. we want to start with the nba draft. >> with the first pick in the 2014 nba draft, the cleveland cavaliers select andrew wiggins. >> after months of speculation of who would go first, andrew wiggins is the man. a small forward out of kansas and toronto native. this is the second consecutive year a canadian was picked number one overall. parker, considered the most

betty, how are you? >> i'm doing great. i'm not sure about hillary clinton's become sales in china. that book has been banned there. so could this actually be considered a bit of a badge of honor for the potential presidential candidate? >> i think you just described it perfectly. it is a badge of honor. this is someone who was very critical of china, calling them, criticizing their policies and their censorship in her more than 600-page book "hard choices." so i do think this from a promotional standpoint now gives us in week three something new to talk about for her book. but from a policy standpoint, i do think, betty, that this -- that this is potentially a good thing for her. >> yeah. so china may have inadvertently helped with the book sales. >> yeah. >> funny how that works. >> yeah. >> all right. i want to shift gears right now to the world cup. >> yes. >> there are pictures of president obama watching the u.s. take on germany on air force one with senior adviser valerie jarrett. there's that picture right

there. seems most of the country is really pulling for team usa, as it should. and given the president's poor favorability ratings, major challenges in syria, iraq, all these things, could the world cup be a good distraction, if you will, for him? >> well, we saw him eating ice cream, too. >> that's true. >> it's funny about the world cup. yesterday on the hill, there was a press conference and usually they shut off all the tvs in the room. but when nancy pelosi was speaking, they actually had the game on. so everyone on the hill is very interested in what's going on with the world cup. myself included. as far as the favorability ratings, though, i don't think we'll be seeing them in a midterm election year boosting any time soon. >> no such luck. >> no. >> you have a terrific friday. >> you, too. and just ahead meg ryan and tom hanks team up again. plus, mark wahlberg takes
