2:00 pm
msnbc.com/photography. thank you as always. >> thank you. >> i'll see you back here at 4:00 p.m. eastern. "the ed show" is up next. >> obama cut the crap with the executive pen. >> may hand the suicide vests at the border you're making it incredibly easy. >> free pass, like a piece of paper that says welcome to the united states, you're free. >> the republicans will continue to block a vote on immigration reform. >> this is president obama's number one political agenda. >> boehner got a little dramatic when he was asked about immigration reform. >> oh, no, this is too hard. >> it may sound melodramatic. >> to fix as much of the immigration as i can on my own without congress. >> hell no, you can't.
2:01 pm
>> i'm going to be the supreme leader here. >> who needs the constitution anyway, the president pointing fingers at the republican party. >> this is too hard. >> republicans are not going to tackle immigration reform. >> done waiting for them to act. >> a bunch of cowards and running from the vote. >> good to have you with us, thanks for watching. do you get sick of the lies? the lies thrown out there about border security and immigration reform? let me tell you the absolute truth as we do every night on the ed show, the republicans are doing what they do best. digging their feet on immigration reform of the john boehner made it clear that republicans will obstruct any plans. the president, well, he's sick of it, sick of the nonsense. he made it clear that
2:02 pm
republicans are to blame for this problem. the president said he's taking action without house republicans. >> america cannot wait forever for them to act. that's why today i'm beginning a new effort to fix as much of the immigration system as i can on my own without congress. the failure of house republicans to pass a darn bill is bad for our economy and bad for our future. it meant the heartbreak of -- it's what the destruction that's meant over the past year. that's what the senate bill would fix if the house allowed it to go to a vote. >> president obama is right to take action. hey, do we matter? this is what the american people want. a new poll by pew shows 76% of
2:03 pm
americans think illegal immigrants should be granted citizenship if they meet the necessary requirements. now that's where it gets sticky, the necessary requirements. something that the republicans will never agree to. everyone is on board in this country except the fringe right wingers. meanwhile, the president's immigration move has everyone freaking out over at fox news. >> president obama vowing to wield executive power one more time. >> i'm going to be the supreme leader here. i'm going to enact my own rubric of immigration procedures and amnesties and throw in a little enforcement for window dressing. >> going to get out the pen and phone. >> if the president of the united states can do this, on an issue as important as immigration law, what else can he do it on. >> >> who needs the constitution anyway? the president pointing fingers at the republican party. >> laura ingram, very interesting comment, i'll throw
2:04 pm
in a little security, i'll throw in a little enforcement for window dressing. i'll get to that in a moment. the fear mongering over immigration at fox is nothing less than shameful. they are lying. this strategy is nothing new. anti-immigration activists william gene told a radio audience, mexican immigrants are plotting american deaths. >> they may smile at you as they serve you your cheese dg burger or peruse your lawn with a weed eater, but underneath it they see a person who they blame to be responsible for their poverty and genocide of their ancestors and the only way to make that even steven is for you and your whole family to die. >> he runs a political action committee, the southern poverty law center classified as a hate group. republicans love to slam obama for being weak on immigration and this is where it gets interesting. if you look at the facts, the president is anything but weak.
2:05 pm
here are the numbers. there have been roughly 2 million deportations since president obama took office. your old buddy george w. bush hit the 2 million mark after almost eight years in office. so president obama by the numbers will go well beyond that mark. now, is that just a little bit of enforcement being thrown at the problem? >> president obama is also spending big dollars to keep this country secure, something the bush administration didn't do enough of. >> in 2012, your government, the united states government spent $18 billion on immigration enforcement. i will just throw a little immigration enforcement in there for window dressing, right, laura? it's more than all of the other law enforcement agencies combined. this includes the fbi, the secret service and the dea. throw them all in together, they don't have $18 billion. so for the right wing and fox newsers to say this president
2:06 pm
isn't doing anything about border enforcement, they are out to lunch. the facts are clear. president obama is keeping us secure and doing the right thing. a path to citizenship, something the republicans will never agree to. republicans are obstructing the president really for two major reasons. first, well, they don't want to upset their fringe base. no house republican wants to end up like eric cantor. and the main reason is republicans don't want to add to the democratic voting base. they want cheap labor and of course, cheap labor is where they make their profit and so they want to stop these workers from voting. so what the republicans do is they always come back and say, well, we can't trust president obama. really? what numbers would you trust? how much money do you want to spends on border security? it has been three fold under this president versus the last
2:07 pm
administration when it comes to manpower and equipment and comes to resources. when it comes to surveillance and fencing by the way. so the republicans are never going to be satisfied and always going to throw out the red herring about security. it's the vote vote being bloc, they are on the wrong side of history on a number of issues, they are a party of selectsivety. they know they can't do anything to turn people of color to their way of thinking. they know that they are a racist party. they have been for years, look at the policies. so the best thing for them to do is to suppress the vote. go against labor. go against voices in the work place. it all ties in. now that you got the supreme court being very activist, the republicans feel pretty confident that they can turn back any effort on immigration reform. the democrats want a path to citizenship. the republicans simply do not.
2:08 pm
they may squawk about it and holler about it and come up with a proposal here and then. but at the end of the day, they know immigration reform would trif a lot of people right into the voting lines that would side with the progressive movement in this country. that's what this blockage is all about. get your cell phones out. tonight's question. should president obama continue with his executive orders? text a for yes and b for no. to 67622. go to our blog and we'll bring you the results later on in the show. for me let me bring in congressman rea half va. i would like to know, from your estimation of resources on the border, the president's move now is to put even more resources on the border. congressman, is that where the problem is as you see it? >> no, i see the problem is not
2:09 pm
necessarily a resource issue as much as it is the fact that we have no immigration reform of our broken system. that breakage is what is causing the isolation of people, it's causing the break-up of families and it is causing less security and less economic growth for this country. there's 45 murks border patrol agents and you must -- 691, douglas, another 400. that's almost 6,000 border patrol agents there. and so i think it's the mission as well that we know that -- cartels and organized crime are responsible for human smuggling and drug smuggling. we should be after breaking that up and we should be about tieing up their assets in the jp morgans of the united states like we do with terrorist groups and like we do with others in the country and begin to shrink their capacity to be doing what
2:10 pm
they are doing. i think that's the target in the long-term. the phenomena with children is another expression of how broken this system is. >> what do you think the motivation is behind the republican obstruction on immigration? why are they doing this? if the system is so broken, why can't they come to some kind of agreement to fix this with the president? what's their motivation, congressman? >> i think you hit the nail on the head with your commentary. i think it is about politics and voting base that they are afraid of and afrid will never align with them. it is also about a very simple issue with the republicans that if they can suppress votes, eliminate votes, then they continue to retain power. they come up with excuses, it's obama's fault, we can't trust them. come up with excuses about not doing anything. chamber of commerce is for immigration reform. 70 plus are for immigration
2:11 pm
reform. economy is for immigration reform. yet despite all of the pleading and compromises, all of the concessions, we get a no from boehner. >> do you think the president should go as far as he can go with executive orders to address this issue? >> i think the president needs to be bold. it needs to be ample, we need to unify families and look at this issue not just as deportation detention issue but as an issue of unification. this great nation of ours is from many there is one. this is the immigrant experience we're going through right now. we should be about integrating people, not doing what we're doing, leaving people in the shadows and segregating people. i also think underlining this whole issue in particular, this immigration issue we're confronting, underlining that as the issue of race, like it or not, it's part and parcel. they have linked those two
2:12 pm
things together and it makes it even a more -- a more dangerous kind of issue not to settle and not to come to some conclusion with. >> okay. congressman rob grijalva. let me bring in bob shrum. it really boils down to demographics, republican policies don't match up with demographics. what's your take on this? >> what's going on is the republican party is captive to a bitter group of people in this country who can't come to terms with the emerging new america that will be a majority of minorities number one. you have folks like steve king representative steve king from iowa in the house who at least sound racist when they talk about immigration reform. i think they genuinely feel that kind of resentment. and number three, you have some republicans who know this is political disaster for them demographically long term who sit there on the house and look
2:13 pm
over at eric cantor and say, i just don't want to take that risk. we can't move forward. so that's -- they are just paralyzed. >> yeah, so what does this mean for republicans in the midterms? >> they are blaming obama. they can't trust obama. obama is throwing window dressing at the border. the numbers are what they are with deportations and amount of resources at the border. so bottom line here is, what does this mean for -- what does this number mean right here for the republicans in the midterms? >> the midterms they are going to be a little better off in the short term than they will be in 2016. base he canally you have the republican party on its way to becoming a permanent congressional party. a party that can't compete for the presidency. because you can't win the presidency, no republican can without getting about 40% of the hispanic vote. right now republicans are headed
2:14 pm
for say, south of 20%. so all they are doing with this kind of politics actually is strengthening the odds that hillary clinton or some other democrat will win in 2016. 2014, any benefit from gerrymandering and benefit from the concentration of democratic votes in urban areas. but as you look down the road long term, you look at states like arizona and texas, with these emerging hispanic voting blocs, republicans are going to be in trouble in the midterms of 2018 and 2022, this is short term politics they are going to pay a very high price for long term. >> and do you think -- not to put words in your mouth that this is all about the demographics that they know they are way behind their policies don't match up with people of color, they just don't want to run those people into the voting lines for democrats. >> i think that's true for some of them. for others it's a simple terror of what's going to happen to them in republican primaries.
2:15 pm
all of them look at cantor and none look at lindsey graham. they understand that republicans had to make piece with the emerging hispanic population in this country. the reason bush sneaked back into the presidency in 2004 watt because he got 42% of the hispanic vote. mitt romney got about 25%. the next republican nominee is probably headed for 17%. so you've got these guys in the congress with their own kind of narrow self-interest in preserving their seats at war with the long-term republican strategic necessities and most strategists would tell you they worry a lot about this. >> all right. bob shrum. always great to have you with us on the ed show. thanks so much for your time tonight. remember to answer tonight's question at the bottom of the screen. and share your thoughts on

public service should not be affected by a personal mistake. >> kiss and makeup. >> however, he will not be running with the help of the quts duck dynasty clan. >> pucker up, butter cup. >> the court dealt something of a setback to labor unions that represent government employees. >> there is clearly an attack on workers in this country. >> the supreme court's union decision would have a big impact on public employees. >> the court said government workers who care for people at home and don't join the union do not have to pay union fees. >> the decision is a blow for the service employees international union and could lose thousands of members in illinois and millions of dollars in lost fees. >> it was a narrower decision than what unions feared. >> doesn't deal them the death blow. >> not going to stop us from organizing and reaching out to people and build a stronger voice. >> joining me tonight is flora johnson, a home care provider and chairperson for the
2:22 pm
executive board of service employees international union health care illinois. thanks for your time tonight, just capsulize, what does yesterday's ruling mean for workers in your profession? >> it means that they are trying to send us back to the bad old days where we was working in the past, work for $1 an hour. when i started working, 15 years ago, i was at $6. so now that the decision that they made yesterday it's going to be hard on the people that we work for because if we are not making enough money, there's going to be turnovers and people that want to make a career out of this job but they can't because they got to look out for their families also.
2:23 pm
>> so, this decision is really going to hurt the people who need the care sean the providers are going to do what they do. but the people that need the care are going to get hurt. will they still get the same quality of services in your opinion? >> well, i'll say we are committed. but they might not get the same quality of care because it's not going to be enough people to work because it's going to be the turnover as i said. people are going to look elsewhere for jobs so they request take care of their families. >> yeah. now, do you think that the lack of protection and representation will make people rethink a career in this industry? now, you know, a rising tide lifts all boats. it's very clear. and the effort to suppress wages is very strong in this country. would you have been better off with representation and being able to fund that aspect of
2:24 pm
representation? >> yes, you're better off with representation. because people are going to think -- rethink about making a career out of this if we have to be submitted to what the right wing is trying to do and the big corporations. and they don't want us to have you know, a voice. we're not going to go backwards, we're going to keep going forward. we're going to keep a voice. and we're going to keep speaking out. >> all right, flora johnson, i appreciate your time tonight on "the ed show." voices of workers heard on this program. thank you, all the best. we'll cover the story as we move forward. rick santorum thinks limiting right to vote may be a good thing. he lands in pretenders tonight. what is next in the fight with the keystone xl pipeline.

2:34 pm
this is new ground. but it's important to note this decision goes far beyond the christian owned craft supply store at the side of the screen here. here's a full list compiled by the daily beast of pending cases, pending cases filed by companies non-profits and universities challenging obama care. affordable care act's contraception mandate as of july 26th. these 82 employers could drop contraception coverage as a result of yesterday's ruling. in the meantime, yesterday's decision only highlighted the great divide between conservatives and democrats when it comes to women's health issues. >> president obama believes that women should make personal health care decisions for themselves rather than their bosses deciding for them. today's decision jeopardizes the health of women who are employed by these companies. >> in the hobby lobby case, narrow, though it may be, the supreme court by 5-4 majority
2:35 pm
decision defended the liberty. >> it's very troubling that a sales clerk at hobby lobby who needs contraception, which is pretty expensive, is not going to get that service through her employer's health care plan because her employer doesn't think she should be using contraception. >> this law passed by president clinton that democrats are objecting signed on to also voted for, that law protects you hob boy lobby and cathy sebelius's mineions don't get to take your rights away from you. >> joining us tonight on the rapid response panel, sara slayman and also political comment ator john fugleshank. let's go to the right wing talkers of america saying this
2:36 pm
is a situation where the supreme court defended liberty. do you feel your liberty was defended? >> absolutely not. i agree with the justice ruth bader ginsburg who pointed out all it does is violate establishment clause and elevate one religion's interpretation of emergency contraception over other people's interpretations. this has nothing to do with religious liberty and freedom but everything to do with the ee ven gel cals and catholics who make up the majority opinion in this case. >> defended liberty. what do you think he meant by that comment? the conservatives are out there saying that corporations should have liberty over people. i don't know if corporations vote. i don't know -- >> corporations don't vote. >> your interpretation of that is what?
2:37 pm
>> my interpretation of it is it's just another -- it's false. it's to feed into the persecution complex that gets their base really riled up. anyone can look at this case and understand why it's a huge violation of everyone else's liberty and religious beliefs. the thousands of women and millions of women around this country who work for the 90% of corporations that are quote, closely held, their beliefs and liberty are violated by the hobby lobby decision. it's just a front to further this attack on women and reproductive health care. >> john, i don't want to turn this into a hillary clinton bloc here tonight but she clearly is running for president. there's no way that a decision like this could come down in the supreme court and she not come out quickly and be vocal about it. it seems to me there is a clear divide here between liberals and conservatives on yesterday's ruling and it sounds like both sides are talking about entirely different rulings here. your thoughts? >> well, i'm glad to be coming
2:38 pm
to you today from los angeles in that it's kind of like hobby lobby full of people that feel moral but are fake. those abortion providers will get all kinds of new customers thanks to hobby lobby and businesses that have decided along with the supreme court majority, that some women's medication isn't really medication. we don't have an abortion problem in this country. we have an unwanted pregnancy problem and an abortion symptom. when you sign on to making it harder for american women in the workplace to have access to abortion as justice ginz bufrg pointed out, a woman working full-time on minimum wage needs a full month's salary to be able to afford an iud. you are creating new customers for america's abortion providers. if hobby lobby cared that much about abortion, they would stop doing so much business with
2:39 pm
china that performs more abortions than the worldwide. pretending the bible prohibits birth control because you just want to save a buck. >> so, doesn't this just put the government between you and your doctor if you're a woman? and isn't this just a huge issue of discrimination here, john? >> absolutely. it is. especially when you consider they are still providing vas he canmys and viagra. our conservative friends are happy to point out 16 forms are still allowed but not iud or plan b. a fertilized egg, not attaching to the wall is not an abortion. if it was, god would be our most prolific abortionist. that is not the case. i've been through the bible many times and no point does he say shall not wear a jimmy hat. nothing prohibiting birth
2:40 pm
control. it's not the sort of thing jesus talked about. >> all right, rick santorum's echo light studios is already cashing in on the supreme court ruling. on monday the studio said it will release one generation away the erosion of religious liberty, that's the title coming out on september 1st, exploring the hobby lobby ruling. take a look at this. >> we need to be good stew ards of this time in history. where we have the erosion of religious liberty happening in our lifetimes. >> it will go away if we do not attend to the threats to religious freedom right now. >> knows that it's possible to wake up the german church but they don't wake up. >> it's time to stop talking about it and start being willing to be him. >> this is absolutely repulsive and i find it amazing rick santorum would put his name to something so horrific as that.
2:41 pm
>> do you? >> i guess that's who they are these days. >> sara, your thoughts on the separation of church and state, that apparently being eroded away? >> absolutely. the morally impotent gang of five that issued the majority of opinion with justice alito have decided all of the years of clerkship and studying law has made them greater experts on health care than the american council of on ste trigss and gin kol gifts. iuds and emergency contraception are not abort efficient. by coding this biased language in the law of the land, they struck one of the biggest blows against secular americans and americans with different beliefs than catholics like scalia. it is about enforcing beliefs,
2:42 pm
false beliefs. >> john, go ahead. >> rick santorum, he's comparing progressives to nazis. they were anti-union and anti-gay and anti-checkive bargaining. who does that remind you of? i think people who compare people to nazi are worse than hitler. he is very pro death penalty, something jesus spoke about unlike birth control and abortion. loved the iraq war. rick santorum, sort of like a sweater vest, real easy to slip off when it gets uncomfortable for you. >> both of you saw the list much 82 companies with pending cases. john, where does this go from here? is it that -- and hillary clinton addressed this as well, this is rather narrow now but it could be very broad in the future and its effect? >> yeah, i agree. this is not a slippery slope. this is like a ski jump covered
2:43 pm
in lube. i want people in the supreme court and media to talk more about the that there's no part of the bible that prohibits birth control. it's not about hobby lobby's deep faith in conviction, it's about their taste. at the end of the day it's about their not wanting to spend an extra buck on contraception for female employees while their 401 x plan has $73 million invested in the same companies that manufacturer plan b and the iud. the hypocrisy is pretty steep here. >> quickly, sara -- >> i think this is a fair case. >> sara, quickly, will this help turn texas blue? >> yes, it will. you know, i think people, men and women are seeing the writing on the wall. the fight is here. men, stand up and join us and help us fight off the tierny from the supreme court. there's a democratic headquarters in every city in the country.

jobs. we heard a different story from folks in york, nebraska, this spring. land ownerers told "the ed show" about the misinformation campaign and aggressive land grab tactics trans-canada tried to use. ♪ >> wherever you go, people want to talk about the pipeline. this is an issue at the heart of a lot of things in nebraska. i think one of the main reasons is it brings everything together. >> for the people of nebraska, it's about the aquifer and the land grab. these two issues have cultivated new alliances. >> it's the citizens and land owners and the tribes that really have become a strong alliance with us. when we started we had about a thousand e-mails of folks. now we have over 25,000. about 90% of those are nebras nebraskans. we have strong support in our state. >> land owners say they have

experienced what they never thought could happen in america. >> truly outrageous part of this whole thing, our governor and our legislature granted the power of eminent domain to a foreign corporation that's still in the permitting process. they had the power to come and condemn any of our propertieses that were on the pipeline route. even though they don't have a permit to be in the united states. to me , that's totally outrageous. the sad part is if you follow the pipeline route, south dakota has the same thing. montana has very lax -- they have changed their eminent domain laws in favor of pipelines and that type of thing. so they have greased all the wheels all up and down the line, you know? they have undue influence in so many legislatures. you know, we are seeing the power of money in america.

concerned. i want to know about montana. is it a done deal in montana or is eminent dplan dmain an issue there and now that there's been a correction of a lot of information out there, are you going to expand your message and outreach to the state? >> we are definitely already reaching out to the tribes and land owners in montana. there was a spill in the yellowstone river a couple years ago. that got land owner awareness up. trans-canada has essentially lied to governor swiezer and senator tester saying the pipeline would bring $18 million a year in property tax which is not true. keystone one is the example. they said it will help get 500 million barrels of oil to the market when they have krarkt contracts for only 6% of the line to carry montana and south dakota oil. they have been sold a bill of goods. >> what's the difference this time around for trans-canada

getting a permit in south dakota. why wouldn't it just be filing the paperwork? >> yeah. the real difference is that tribes and land owners actually know the real story about the pipe disline, that this is action an export pipe loose line. american oil production has gone up and the demand has gone down which is the opposite of what trans-canada said what i they needed the permit. tribes have the lawyers together strategizing to fight around water rights and about cultural resource studies that haven't been done. land owners aren't falling for this talking point anymore from transcanada that says if you let us take your land and pump this oil your gas prices will magically go down. people know it's not true and the risk outweighs any reward transcanada will put forward. >> i know secretary of state john kerry is busy, but why
