4:21 am
it certainly as you mentioned a fiery scene. we saw both sides fueled by anger and passion. they blocked streets, waved flags. of course they argue marietta was at the center of this fiery immigration debate after protesters blocked bus loads of immigrants. and the other side was here to show compassion for those fleeing their country from poverty and other concerns in central america. while they didn't show up here in marietta, they did show up in other parts of the southwest. we saw families being processed at local bus facilities who were trying to find relatives in other parts of the country back here in marietta. this is a microcosm for how the rest of the country feels. two communities very divided, alex. >> miguel, do we know what
4:22 am
happened to the three buses, where they went, where they ended up? >> they were supposed to arrive here at this facility on tuesday. authorities tell us they typically are held for about 72 hours. that's how much time it takes to get processed and released. they won't document on where they were because they were under threat by protesters is what the government was telling us. we saw many released into the community a few days ago. many may be trying to find relatives in other parts of the country, alex. >> okay. miguel, thank you for that. so marietta, california protesters turn away undocumented immigrants in town. what is your solution? talk to me on twitter. we will read some of your tweets throughout the day on the broadcast. stepping up security measures for all flights headed to the u.s. as al qaeda is trying to develop a new kind of bomb that can get through

holloway. those are your fast five headlines. >> with hurricane arthur downgraded to a tropical storm a short time ago, the picture looks much brighter on the east coast. good morning, jeannette. and i had to thank you earlier for the weather here in new york. >> thank you, alex. it is going to be an absolutely gorgeous day across much of the northeast in the wake of arthur. many folks will be head to get beaches across the mid atlantic. although arthur is off to the northeast, be careful. a significant storm surge across sections of coastal new england. here is arthur continuing to push off to the northeast. notice it is still bringing rainfall across coastal sections of new england. farther south and west, high pressure is building in from the west bringing dryer and more tranquil conditions. it's going to warm up nicely throughout the course of the afternoon across much of the mid atlantic. center of atlantic, 60 miles or so packing maximum sustained

it's been tremendous. >> it's 20 years for the the essence festival. this week we commemorate lbj signing the civil rights act, 50 years. talk to us about how much work you think is left to be done where civil rights is concerned. >> well, there is a tremendous amount of work to be done. the progress of the last 50 years is certainly notable. this event could not have happened 50 years ago. this event certainly places a bright light on the power of african-american consumers and shines a light on the great city of new orleans. but the work yet to be done is challenged now by these forces. forces on the far right that want to express the vote. make it difficult for congress to even vote on simple things
4:34 am
like an increase in minimum wage. the challenge in schools which seem to be more gated now than 50 years ago. there's a tremendous amount of work to do. it's a work in progress. it is interesting. it all coincides with the independence day celebration america. a great nation is a work in progress. >> yeah. absolutely. here's a fun fact. a lot of people may realize that the convention center was named after your father ernest. >> yeah. >> talk about that and what you're father would think about the strides made? >> my father was a civil rights lawyer, president of the new orleans branch of the naacp, the first black legislator, certainly the first black mayor of new orleans. he and my mother in that generation lived until they were adults in a completely segregated city. i think they would be amazed and
4:35 am
shocked with things like voter expression. we seem to be re-fighting old battles. things that seem to be long settled are now new and fresh battles. but i think they would be enormously pleased. my father was one of the driving forces behind the building of that convention center back in the late 1970s and the early 1980s. and that convention center, along with the louisiana superdome, make a festival like essence possible. because these venues here in allow for a super human-sized event. >> absolutely. i'm going to have my director put up a map we were showing as well. i want people to take a look. these voter expression laws since the 2010 election, these are states where it was happening. north carolina just passed an extremely restrictive voting law. the texas chapter of the naacp
4:36 am
filed suit against a new voter i.d. law. some think it is targeting black and latino voters. you know, that's a lot of concern here. what do you plan to do about that? how do you combat that? >> i think you will see litigation. i think you will see advo case. i think there is a palpable sense of outrage. here we are talking about restoring democracy in place like iraq. we are spending money to mow promote democracy. and some want to make it more difficult for people to vote in the united states. i think you will see mass resistance. a people's movement that will continue to fight voter expression laws. we have to enhance democracy. we can't use false issues like voter fraud for which there are no real documented case as sort of a false reason to do this, which is what you see happening.
4:37 am
there's going to be tremendous resistance. in 2012 the effort to suppress the vote backfired because voter turnout was higher than it had ever been. so the idea that today we can rest, we can certainly celebrate only. we've got to continue this work and continue this fight to make democracy stronger, to make america better and really to protect these hard-fought gains for our future. >> all right. amen. i couldn't he tell you had two and a half hours sleep. thank you. thank you so much for talking with us. >> thank you. new clashes to report to the controversy over the recent influx of undocumented immigrants. yesterday protesters were handcuffed and detained. secretary of homeland security johnson calls the protest counterproductive. >> when someone interrupts the ability of the border patrol to
4:38 am
process a migrant, you're preventing basic health screening and background checks on who these the people are. that's a very basic border patrol function. i look at the images and they are very disturbing. >> it has led to increased calls for president obama to come up with solutions. he said he would use executive power to do just that. joining me now, msnbc contributor and professor at the university of texas and washington bureau chief of the chicago done times lynn sweet. >> victoria, the president said he would rigorously enforce the law while dealing with immigrants in a humane way. so what does that look like to you? >> it's a very fine balance, alex. we know that the president has undergone a strict deportation policy throughout his years in office. however, right now as we are
4:39 am
seeing the border surge, we're not talking about the same people we were seeing previously. like younger men, people who had criminal activity. here we are talking about a whole different face of immigrants. mothers and young children. so we need to balance out the law enforcement needs of deporting the folks not here legally but keeping in mind the potential refugee and status that need to be conferred. regrettab regrettably, there's no easy solution. combine both needs of enforcing the law and the humanitarian needs of the people. >> how do you respond to governor rick perry who said it is the policies that have contributed to this surge? >> i would think when congress comes pack in a few days, the white house has to do a better job of explaining to people like governor perry, this situation has developed because border patrol has found the people.
4:40 am
the sad story of these unaccompanied children, mainly from guatemala, honduras, in addition to mexico, they are being caught. it's a humanitarian crisis. but the system is working. people are being caught as they cross the border. the problem is in these other countries that have people coming to the united states. and secretary of state kerry has talked to the leaders of those countries. vice president biden has. it is the challenge of the white house to make sure that the congress know tps as it is asking for more people to deal with this that to the republicans who say you should not be doing immigration, let's separate these issues. the border crisis is a new one. it's caused because we the united states has caught the people coming. >> it's also interesting because
4:41 am
apparently there are all these rumors that you are hearing in central america that if the children get across they can stay here. so they have launched a spanish language program to talk about. it's like an ad campaign to say, no, that is not the truth. so that's a lot of disinformation and rumor out there. victor victoria, when the president says he can use executive order, what kind of action can he do? >> it's actually rather limited. because what we wanted, alex, and we have been aligning it for a long time, is comprehensive immigration reform. the president cannot do comprehensive immigration reform on his own. but what he can do is triage in the meantime. especially with regards to immigration to getting the people processed and figuring out who needs to stay pause of refugee status that needs to be granted and who needs to go back. if anything, that would put a band-aid on the situation for the short-term until we can get
4:42 am
he to comprehensive immigration reform. because this is a big problem that needs a multiple layered solution to it. >> but with regard to executive order, as you both know, this is to you, lynn, speaker boehner is suing for what he calls overreach. here's what the president said in response to that. let's take a listen. >> if house republicans are really concerned about me taking too many executive actions, the best solution to that is passing bills. i take executive action only when we have a serious problem, a serious issue and congress chooses to do nothing. >> has congress, lynn, left the president with no other options? >> at this point, yes. and, you know, the story line has been developing that the white house, much to the consternation of immigrants rights groups, is making sure to opportunity has been lost with republicans to forge a deal. so the president now says, sue
4:43 am
me. sue me. just under that famous song. but the threat of john boehner to sue will not from anything i know and have heard about, will not deter president from taking executive action. a few things happen at a time. a court action against it. it would be conceivable that would not stop him from issuing mortars, especially as we get closer to the election. i think the democratic base will demand some kind of action. >> lynn sweet, victoria, thank you, ladies. >> thank you. facing the facts. the reason facebook likes to do secret studies to you.

beaches. facebook catching a lot of heat for a mood experiment that put a lot of people in a foul mood when it came to light earlier this week. a former facebook data scientist said they are always trying to alter people's behavior. say what? joining us is rob myer from atlanta. what was facebook up to? >> facebook wanted to see if by showing users certain kinds of content on their feed, would alter the content they typed into facebook. it split the group in two. it showed half of them with happy posts happier than average. it went to see if the posts they in turn posted were happy happy or sad themselves. it showed they were. if you show people happy things on facebook, they posted happy things themselves. if you show people sad things on facebook, they tend to post sad
4:48 am
things. >> reading your article. it talked about how facebook said we're not actually read anything detail the posts. well, how do you understand appropriately if something is happy or sad? >> they don't really. they are using pretty rudimentary software to analyze whether there is a preponderance of happy or sad words in the post. they're not even using software good for social networking. it is software designed for books. >> interestingly, in specifics you talk about the sentence, i am not happy. i'm not having a great day. they would measure the notes would be negative. but happy and great would be positive? >> exactly. so i'm not happy. i'm not having a great day. these are both clearly negative statements if you're a human. to a machine they wind up looking neutral at this base rudimentary level of analysis

that facebook is doing. >> is this legal? >> yes, it appears to be legal. assuming it was not specifically funded by the u.s. government, which it doesn't look like it was many then it was legal because you kind of see these rights legally contractually when you agree to facebook terms and service. >> that is like a 9,000 term word of service. so you have to read that. and have i done that, would i know i woulding submitting myself to these kinds of studies? >> no, you wouldn't have. facebook did not alert users that it would use their data for search purposes. that detail that is two words in those 9,000 words that say they will use it for research wasn't even added until may 2012. >> can you give me a quick thought on the assessment of the company's response to all of this outcry? >> yeah. facebook, what it does when it upsets users is saying, well,
4:50 am
we're sorry that you feel badly. you'll hear the standard thing. oh, well, we're sorry there is this k can ourselves better. >> do you think they will do this again? >> i think they do things like this all the time. ultimately the thing that is interesting about this study is, first of all, it's really blatant about manipulating moods and second of all it's that this is something facebook does daily and actually something facebook used to do a lot more. and the fact that now the curtain has been drawn back and we can see all their actions and this test in full is rare and they probably do stuff like this all the time. >> okay. thanks for the heads up. >> thanks for having me. employers added far more jobs last month than economists expected. new business owner, it would be one thing i've learned is my philosophy is real simple american express open forum is an on-line community, that helps our members connect and share ideas

28 288,000 new jobs were ad in june. this is the best stretch since the tech boom of the late '90s. unemployment is now 6.1%. let's go inside the numbers with jared bernstein. good to see you. >> nice to see you. s >> so where are we seeing the growth? >> you mentioned quantity, but quality is not much quite as much. however the two are related. and as the job market tightens up, we expect workers to have a bit more bargaining power. but we noticed in the report, which was a strong report, was that while the pace of job growth is accelerating, the pace of wage growth is not. it's steady at about 2% nominal, that means before inflation. now, inflation is also running at about 2%. and that means that paychecks are kind of flat in terms of
4:55 am
buying power. so on the right track, but not there yet. >> another thing that is missing from this report from the top eight of job increases, construction. that added only 6 thourgs j,000. >> construction as a sector has been pretty flat for the past three months when as you mentioned, the rest of the job market has picked up speed. this has a lot to do with recent hiccups in the housing market. the housing market which of course terribly bottomed out in the great recession has been climbing up consistently. but about a year, a little more than a year aer aar ago, mortga started to go up and the pace at which home building was growing decelerated a bit. so it's not surprising that construction has followed suit, but it is an area to watch. >> this report also include as pretty sizable decline in the number of so-called long term unemployed, those who have been out of work at least 27 straight weeks. where have those 293,000 people
4:56 am
in june gone? where is the hope for the 3.1 million long term unemployed? >> well, some of them get jobs. and that's obviously a good thing. that's what they want. they have been hanging out in the job market looking for work for at least half a year, maybe even longer than that. but some leave the job market. they give up because they haven't found anything and they just can't find a niche. and the problem is when a long term unemployed person leaves the job market, it takes a lot to get them back this. and that's one of the reasons the labor force participation rate, the share of the population that is participating in the job market, has been depressed of late. one of the reasons why the long term unemployment rate is of such concern. >> a lot of people in the unvoluntary part-time worker, too. >> right. 7.5 million involuntary part-timers who would be liking to work full-time. so there is still a lot of slack in the job market.
4:57 am
