several afghan civilians and members of the police force were kirled. they were investigating a recent rocket attack when a nearby motorcycle packed with explosives was detonated. the nationalities was not immediately clear. we'll keep you posted on the story as we turn to news at home. in a few hours president obama will arrive in texas. the front lines of the nation's immigration crisis. he's going for a two-day fundraising trip. at this time the plan has no plans to visit the border. it's where more than 50,000 unaccompanied children many from central america have crossed illegally into the country. republican governor rick perry criticized the swhous declining an invitation to meet president obama at the airport. in a statement he said in part, quote, a quick handshake on the tarmac will not allow for a thoughtful discussion regarding the humanitarian and national security crisis eninvolving the rio grand valley in south texas. i would offer to meet with you

any time during your visit to texas to discuss the critical issue. the white house said the president is well aware of the situation along the border. but some democrats think he should see it firsthand. congressman in sure that president bush thought the same thing he could look at everything from up in the sky and then he owned it after a long time. so i hope this doesn't become the katrina moment for president obama. saying he doesn't need to come to the border he should come down. and the white house is taking a tougher tone when asked what will happen to the undocumented immigrants apprehended at the border. >> once they go through the immigration system, it is our view that it's unlikely that most of those kids will qualify for humanitarian relief. if they don't qualify for the humanitarian relief and don't have a legal basis for remaining in the country. they will be sent back. and the dallas morning news points out the crisis at the border is extreme there's a separate transportation system where buses line up each night waiting for the next group of migrants to arrive.

senator robert menendez is striking back after the prostitution smear campaign nearly derailed his political career. he wants the justice department to investigate new evidence that cuban. he was running for re-election has been a critic of the communist regime throughout the career. the washington post is sourcing a former. and a second person with close ties to menendez who have been briefed on the matter that the cia believe it is has evidence including the internet addresses that link cuban agents to the plot. it includes a fake tip steer named pete williams who provided false information. in the middle east israel is on high alert after palestinian militants fired doesn't of rockets into the jewish state. israel is retaliating with the latest round of air strikes overnight. video from the israeli defense force showing the destruction of hamas tarts in the gaza strip.

sirens that are so frequent here in the southern part of israel as well as other parts of the country. in the growing concern this is going to lead to a full-blown confrontation between palestinian factions in gaza and israel. overnight they say 30 palestinians were injured in the first wave of air strikes that were carried out by the israeli air force. among them women and children. among some of the targets as well that were destroyed included homes of what israel says perhaps were suspected hamas militants. in gaza because the dense population. it's going to have some kind of impact on the civilian population. that is going to exacerbate tensions within gaza and certainly within israel over the course of the last week, the country has seen some of the worst clashes it it's seen in a decade in east jerusalem and other palestinian cities inside isra israel. ayman, thank you. we turn our attention to iraq where a political fix appears just far off as any military solution to the violence that threatens to divide the country along

sectarian lines. lawmakers are delaying for five weeks the next session of parliament with officials deck locked over who to nominate. sunni militants continue to drive forward in the campaign to carve out the islamic state. fighting came within 10 miles of the capitol. rebels in eastern ukraine appear to be waging their last stand against ukrainian forces. the militants pulled back from former strongholds in the region to regroup. not without damage. they blew up several key bridges to halt advances by ukrainian troops. the country's solder why have made a series of gains. and this dramatic video showing soldiers in the midst of an operation to regain control of a rebel check point. troops say they seized a number of weapons belonging to the rebels. for the first time as pontiff, pope francis meet face to face with six survivors of
