carolina correctional institution for women. >> a female offender has a lot of needs. that is to feel like someone cares. that has to do with bonding. because a lot of women have been abused. for the first time they see someone that cares, they run to it. they don't see that that person is good for them. >> as a result, there are strict limitations. >> put some space on yal. >> it is a violation to have sex in prison. when we see it, they are punished because of that. we can't have it. >> we met one group of inmates willing to share their secrets for skirting the rules. they were led by dawn, known as heavy "d." >> you have ten fours in here. ten fours is like another inmate, me and my girlfriend

while i go in here. she's going to follow. it's easy to get them to ten four for me. you can give them two or three cigarettes. some know what you are doing and they don't care. some police is down with inmates and some police against inmates. >> some sneak away for quick sex, others like cathy and devin seek long-term relationships. >> we have a good relationship. we have been together for two years. for a relationship in here, it's good. >> when we met them, cathy was 42 and facing a habitual felon for forgery and resisting officers. den was 25 and facing 12 years for murder. >> it was a man i lived with. he was a drug dealer. a robbery gone bad. he got killed. i left the crime scene with the

guy who killed him. it was a bad situation. >> in prison, they seem to have discovered a comfort zone. >> in here, you don't have anybody or anything. you cling. >> women are more affectionate anyway. it looks like normal couples on the street but it's all women. >> any relationship in prison involves towing the line. >> a new couple is like the staff zoning in on them, giving them a hard time. after awhile, they get used to seeing them as a couple and they ease off. you can't kiss in front of them or do a sex act in front of them, but they are not on you for every little thing. i respect the staff. i don't cross that line. >> in spite of rules against it. kathy and devin appear to be domestic blitz. >> i'm the wire. >> we spend our money together. i shop and get our stuff and cook our food every day and make

sure she has her stuff. we do everything together, everything. so, whatever she's involved in, i'm involved in. >> that includes the family business. kathy and devin are not only lovers, they are loan sharks. >> whatever you give them, they double. i started out with $10. put the ten out, 20 the next week. put the 20 out, 40 the next week. i kept doubling until i got on my feet and stable. it's a good hustle. mostly everybody has some type of husband. you don't have help from home. prison is not free. they give you three meals a day and a bar of soap. that's it. >> if you don't want to eat what's in the dining room, you pay for it. if you don't have anybody on the outside making money, the only job you can make money is 40 cents a day. that will never support you. people do all kind of stuff to make hustles.

there's all kind of hustles. loan sharking is one of them. >> they insist they never use muscle to extract a payment. >> if somebody doesn't pay me, i generally just, yeah, i mark it up as a loss. i don't deal with them no more. i tell my friend that is loan shark, don't do it. some people in here are busted in the head with a lock. i ain't down with that. >> devin used to run a riskier business. >> before her, i had my own husband that was pretty puch staff related. yeah. i, um -- i would find weak staff, whoever i found in here because they obviously can't find somebody on the streets to hook up with and i would play them to get money. i continue to get money. >> they should have them fired.

street gang, drugs, violence, all that. there were six guys in a car they say i shot at. they gave me six life terms for that. >> he is assigned to the secure housing unit where contact visits are not permitted. >> right now, here together, you stand free and apart from all other people in this world. right now, you stand within that charmed circle of your love together. raul and his bride were childhood friends and reconnected five years earlier. though it's unlikely he will ever be free, she agreed to marry him anyway. her son, ruben, stood in as best man. >> oh, my god, you dropped the ring. >> she seen in me, i'm a human being. she opened her house, her heart, she gave me her family.

come to visit them. in lock up, they have provided some of the most compelling moments in the series. >> hey, baby. >> few visitations provide as much drama as conjugal visits, when an inmate is allowed an overnight stay with a spouse. >> makes you appreciate the little things in life. >> when we met ron golden at kearn valley, he was facing robbery and assaults on correctional staff. he claims his recent marriage to a childhood friend helped turn him around. >> before we were maried, i was in a lot of fistfights and rivals. >> he earned the right to a 46-hour conjugal visit with his wife in a prison cottage. before the visit begins, she must pass through security. >> do you have your id?

>> it's in there. >> can you get it? >> okay. >> when ron's wife, hope, showed up, we thought we would get shots of her being processed, coming through, opening the bag, shots of her and the c.o. there going through her things. then it turned into a bit of a scene. >> okay, baby oils can't go in there. >> it's not on the list. >> it's a lubricant. everything has to be factory sealed. this is unopened but contained alcohol. >> everything like that contains alcohol. >> everything, just about, has alcohol in it. >> after coming dangerously close to being denied her visit, hope is allowed to proceed to the prison's gated conjugal unit. >> good things and bad things you have to go through to get here.

>> hope says the difficulties of a prison visit are worth it. >> i knew who he was before i started coming to see him at the prison and i liked him then. because we were friends first. that's what made us bond as lovers even better. especially because we didn't make love until we got married. that was something i never did before. i was happy about that, too. >> what are you going to do for two days? >> we gonna have a lot of fun, exercise, jumping jacks and stuff. >> liar. >> golden is finally escorted across the yard to the visitation center. his long-awaited reunion with his wife is moments away. >> extremely excited.

you nervous? >> mm-hmm. >> you ain't used to this. >> sometimes when a camera is in the room, people are not going to act naturally. ron and hope both knew we would be there for the beginning of the conjugal visit. certainly not during any part of the conjugal visit. >> the crew was real nice, very pleasant. >> as i stood at the back of the room to get a wide shot, i could hear them talking, saying is he gone yet? is he gone yet? they wanted me out. >> visitation is also bittersweet. our crew saw how much so at indiana state prison when the family arrived for their first visit in months. >> to be honest, a low class home. my brother, my older brother, they all graduated from college.

i just happened to go down the wrong road of selling drugs. >> bonds is serving 85 years for robbing a liquor store and killing the owner. >> i had two daughters at the time. my girlfriend at the time she was two months pregnant when i got locked up. >> that child was 8 when he shot at indiana. even though he never lived with his father, eddie was missing him. >> he actually shot a person and he didn't mean to, but, but, when i see him again, i'm going to have to live with him and be with him together so he can go to the park and the museum. >> his younger son cries sometimes because he doesn't have his father around. there's some things he really needs to be in his life for. >> bonds has had a tough time following the rules in prison as

well. his last infraction was for attempting to intimidate an officer. that, along with three urine tests that tested positive for marijuana cost him visitation privileges with his family. he only recently got them back, but with restrictions. >> right now, i'm on non-contact status. it's through the phone and the glass. >> how did you react when your son told you he wasn't go to have contact visits anymore? >> i was upset and threatened to not even bring his kids up here. very upset with him. matter of fact, i was so upset with him, i couldn't think straight. >> bonds acknowledged his actions in and out of prison don't set the best example for his children. >> it's like how can i tell you to be good, do good in school, out of trouble and every time you come see me, i'm on restrictions or i can't have

visits because i'm in trouble. you're kind of a hypocrite, dad. you are telling me to be good, but you're not being good. >> our crew caught up with him before his first visit in months. >> your clothes are pressed and your boots are shiny and new. >> your family comes from so far. it puts a smile on their face to see you are doing okay. they worry about me. >> first, bonds needs to pass previsitation security measures, starting with his freshly pressed clothes. >> completely disrope. >> despite the fact he will not have physical contact, bonds, like every other indiana inmate is strip searched. upper lip up, lower lip down. look inside your nose. >> authorities must ensure they

are not attempting to pass contraband to the outside. >> turn around, squat, cough. >> meanwhile, the bonds family has to pass through security as well. though it was near lay three-hour drive to get here, jerry bonds sr. feels it's worth it. >> when a person is down, you have to be there for them. what we try to relay back to jerry is that we hope he gets out of here sometime soon. then when you do get out, you know, pick up where you left off. show these kids that they are not just coming up here for, you know, nothing at all. >> i'm anxious, man. i want to see them so bad. i wish i could touch them and hug them, but -- i guess this is better than nothing. >> finally, the waiting is over. >> what's up, man? how y'all doing?
