teen is shot dead. new video of rioting and looting in ferguson, tempers reached a boiling point sunday night. looters ran sacked stores during a vigil for 18-year-old michael brown. a struggle over a cop's gun led to his fatal shooting. brown's family is not buying it. this morning the community remains on edge bracing for more backlash. nbc's jay gray has more. >> reporter: crowds gathered in ferguson, missouri, sunday night to march for justice and peace. but their vigil quickly turned violent. dozens of police officers from st. louis and surrounding areas rushed in as an angry mob lit fires and looted local businesses, frustration boiling over after michael brown, an unarmed 18-year-old was shot and killed during a struggle with a ferguson police officer saturday afternoon. the protesters tried to push through barricades but a line of

officers and riot gear held their ground. the violence continued late into the night while civic leaders called for calm and promised justice as the investigation into brown's death continues. jay gray, nbc news. also we have breaking news within the hour, senior u.s. officials say the obama administration has again directly arming kurds in iraq. last night the u.s. military conducted a fourth airdrop of food and wear the along the sinjar mountains. there you see members of the y z yazidis. 1,000 refugees escaped with help from rebels. the u.s. is weighing options to rescue the rest. hours ago during a press conference in australia, chuck hagel spoke of the need for a wider humanitarian response. >> this is a humanitarian issue of great consequence for all of

curb that risk. >> iraqis look at america as being able to help prevent a genocide. we should do that. >> reporter: over the weekend, more humanitarian airdrops for yazidis stranded on sunjar mountain receiving thousands of pounds of food and water. the state department says they're pulling out american personnel in erbil citing abundance of caution. and will explore options for evacuating stranded refugees. the iraqi prime ministerial i can spoke for the first time since the usair strikes. he says he'll not step down. >> prime minister maliki politicized the military and militarized the politics of iraq over the last several years. that has to be reversed. >> we can't wait for maliki and iraqi parliament to fight isis. every day that goes by, isis becomes a direct threat to the united states of america. they are more powerful now than al qaeda was on 9/11.

>> and despite that grim warning, the president says there will be no troops on the ground in iraq. meanwhile, there was a parliament hearing schedule for today to discuss the new iraqi leadership. it's now been postponed. in the mideast, a new day, a new cease-fire. this morning it seems to be holding. egypt helped broker this latest truce. before it went into effect, this happened. israeli missiles fell over gaza. a factory and a house of gaza's mayor were obliterated. both sides are expected to resume peace talks in cairo later today. well, red hot rory mcilroy does it again, winning back to back majors after taking the title at the pga championship. it was a tight race to the finish. early on, it was a three player fight for the lead between rickie fowler, henriq stinson

and rory. he found his groove. able to get an eagle on that. and then back in the race at 14 under. on the 17th, he birdies to get this two shot lead. and as darkness rolls in during the final minutes, mcilroy sinks in the winner to finish 16 under. at just 25 years, 3 months and 6 days old, rory becomes the third youngest player to win four majors behind tiger woods and jack nicklaus. that is some good company. all right. this morning no criminal charges have been filed against three time nascar champion tony stewart. but investigators are still looking into what caused a fatal track accident over the weekend. stewart's car struck fellow driver 20-year-old kevin ward jr. on saturday. ward was treated at the scene but pronounced dead at the hospital. in a statement released sunday, stewart wrote in part, "there aren't words to describe the sadness i feel about the accident that took the life of

kevin ward jr. it is a very emotional time for all involved." officials say ward got out of his car on the dimly lit track and appeared to be confronting stewart when he was hit. and in other sports news, reagan smith drove in stewart's place yesterday during the sprint cup series race at watkins glen einternational. kyle busch in a hurry to leave the pit stall accidentally takes off with a gas can still attached. he'll have to come back for a pass through penalty. lap 50, poll it is jeff gordon was in lead before his car lost power. 35 laps to go, a scary collision. look at that. sends driver ryan newman hard into the guardrail. both drivers will be okay. after all that, it was a.j. 5 almindiger to win.

ryan lochte beat michael phelps at the u.s. national championships in the 200 meter. he led the entire race finishing just .05 seconds ahead of phelps. their times were records as the second and third fastest times in the world this year. not bad. phelps remains winless though in four races since coming out of retirement. to baseball, marlins-reds. march wlinz a power hit into center. it looks like it is out of there. but denied. reds jay bruce makes the incredible leap to make it over the wall grab. the reds go on to win 7-2. to toronto, tied at five in 19 innings. that's a lot there. it's blue jays slugger jose batista with a walkoff single to right to top the tigers 6-5. in milwaukee, dodgers-brewers tied at one. clayton kershaw with a wild pitch. a quick throw to third to catch the runners off the bag. he is ruled safe.

to purg torre or something. >> that is your scrambled politics. joining me is lynn sweet from the chicago sun times. a few days in, how deep is this divide getting between democrats and republicans over these air strikes in iraq? >> well, it is a bridge that can't be -- a gap that can't be bridged right now. it is basically some leading republicans are saying that we should be sending in more assistance to the kurdish -- to the kurdish minorities who are trapped in iraq. and with congress out until after labor day, it's going to be hard to see how there can be any kind of a big change in the situation right now. >> but we are getting word from an official in the obama administration that the u.s. is arming kurds. what kind of reaction can we expect from key players in the middle east from this? >> well, i mean the key players in congress actually should welcome both sides of the aisles

will welcome the arming of the kurds. it makes it -- it takes away pressure for the u.s. to even consider sending in more personnel even in the nonofficial capacity, in the nonofficial fighting capacity but as advisors. which the u.s. does have people. avoiding american casualties is what is most important. internationally, president obama has been talking with his counterparts, particularly in british and france to have a humanitarian -- a united humanitarian response to the crisis. >> it's going to be interesting to see how this plays out on a global scale now that the decision has been made to arm the kurds. i want to ask you briefly, the president says this is a limited mission. and there will be no boots on the ground. can he keep that promise and not be dragged into what is called mission creep? >> well that, is his problem right now. he has two in some ways opposing goals. he wants to provide humanitarian
