broadway performances and penned two autobiographies, for years she was half of the power couple, bogey and becall. it was an epic love story and kristen has more on the life of the actress. >> you know how to whistle, don't you steve? you just put your lips together and blow. >> reporter: with that legendary line, lauren becall burst on to the silver screen at the age of 19, launching a career that spanned eight decades. for betty per sci, she took her mother's last name. she worked -- grew up in a working class neighborhood in the bronx and dreamed of being in the movies. the wife of a director spotted

her on the cover of harper's bazaar in 1943 and persuaded her to be flown for a screen test. she was cast opposite the biggest movie star in the world. in to have and to have not, becall traded verbal barbs with humphrey bogart. >> it came when i started in pictures. >> the on screen chemistry was genuine. >> who want fall madly in love with him at the age of 19? you have to be crazy. i was knocked out by him. >> they married in 1945 and became hollywood's hottest couple. on screen, they co-starred in three more movies together.

off screen, they started a family with son stephen and daughter lesley. in the 1950s, she showed off her comedic timing in movies how to mary a millionaire. >> i think it's a testament to how tough she was and what a good actress she was, that she delivered this great performance while the love of her life was at home dying. >> bogart succumbed to cancer in 1957. four years after his death, becall started a new chapter in her life. she moved to new york, married actor jason robards, gave birth to her third child, sam, and returned to the stage. she conquered broadway the way she dazzled hollywood, winning

details on the death of robin williams. the comedian and actor hanged himself, between sunday night and late monday morning. >> at that time, the personal assistant was able to gain access to his bedroom and entered the bedroom to find mr. williams clothe, in a seated position, unresponsive with a belt secured around his neck with the other end of the belt wedged between the closet door and the door frame. >> officials say the actor had cuts on a left wrist and that a pocketknife was found near his body. investigators refused to discuss whether there was a note left behind and say toxicology tests will determine if he had drugs in his system. there are suggestions that the actor was troubled over his financial situation. in an interview with parade magazine last month, he talked about his return to tv on the

short lived sit com crazy ones, saying the idea of a steady job is appealing. that show was canceled after just one season. and the actor's death is also bringing renewed attention to depression and what can happen if it goes untreated. our next guest has struggled with depression. she also worked with robin williams starring as his daughter lydia in 1993's lydia. >> it's really you in there. >> it's just a mask. this is a body suit. i didn't have any operations or anything. >> that's good. >> yeah. >> hi. >> oh, hey. >> a special moment there. joining me now is retired actress lisa jacob. lisa so kind for you to be with us this morning to share some of

your reflections of this man we all loved. you penned a thank you note to robin williams for a lot of the experience. you were 14 at the time and you were given a really hard option because your school said you can't do this movie and if you do, we're going to kick you out. what did you do and what happened? >> well, i did the movie. it sort of evolved with my school over time. it was a lot of pressure to put on them to have them come up with six months worth of work for me do ahead of time. that didn't work for them, and so i was not allowed to come back to school, and so i did the movie. i was very dis -- distraught at being out of school at 14. robin was a kind and generous soul. >> he stepped in, wrote a letter to your principal.

wrote how valuable this experience was. it shouldn't be mutually exclusive going for a dream like this and coming back to pursue your education. what happened? >> unfortunately, it didn't work. he put his neck out for me and did this very generous thing, unfortunately things don't always fall together the way you would want them to and it didn't work out, but it was an incredible lesson for me in you just try to help your friends, you just try to do what's right and sometimes the outcome is not up to you. >> it's a valuable lesson for a young 14-year-old to learn, and now you write this beautiful thank you note for him, how surprised were you to hear about this and also how did it make you feel because you opened up about suffering from your own issues of depression. >> i was like the rest of the world and i was completely shocked, saddened. i think i'm still in shock, but mental illness, depression,

these are really important issues we need to be talking about. i think there is a lot of shame that surrounds it. i think people who are struggling with these issues feel isolated, and i think things like this are great that we can kind of bring them to light and discuss them further, and let people know that if they are having a hard time with this, there's help available. there's help out there. >> and for you, where are you in your life right now? you are retired from acting? >> i am. i'm retired from acting. i retired when i was 22. i'm a writer now and that has been amazing way for me to deal with the world, deal with my anxiety issues that i have, and really reach out to people and the emails i've gotten back from people who say, hey, i can so much relate to this, i completely understand what you are saying, maybe the circumstances look a little different, but underneath, it we all deal with the same things. >> you have a book coming out in

forces to iraq. they are part of a team asse assessing how to address the humanitarian crisis triggered by islamic state militants. there are more than 900 members stationed in iraq. the u.s. dealt another blow to the militants as a drone crushed a mortar position being used against kurdish forces. the obama administration says it will not lead to combat on the ground. >> this is not any extension of any role for the united states, other than to find ways to assist and help advise the iraqi secure forces, very specifically, this is not a combat boots on the ground operation. we're not going to have that kind of operation. >> hillary clinton is hoping to patch things up today with president obama after a clash over foreign policy and the rise

of militants in syria and now iraq. the dust up started when the former secretary of state took some not so uttle digs at the present. in an interview with the atlantic, the possible 2016 candidate said in part, great nations need organizing principles and don't do stupid stuff is not an organizing principle. clinton's comments drew a sharp rebuke from david alex rod. in an appearance reference to her support in 2012. just to clarify, don't do stupid stuff, means stuff like occupying iraq in the first place, which was a tragically bad decision. it all ties back to what's been described as the president's foreign policy doctrine. last may "the new york times" noted how mr. obama described his foreign policy credo with a baseball analogy. in private conversations, the president has used a saltier

variation of the phrase don't do stupid stuff. clinton's comments criticizing th that. earlier today, the secretary called president obama to make sure she knows nothing she said was an attempt to attack him, his policies or his leadership. secretary clinton has at everyone step of the way touted the significant achievements of his presidency which she is honored to have been a part of as a secretary of state. like any two friends who have to deal with the public eye, she looks forward to hugging it out when they see each other tomorrow night. that event will be a birthday party for the wife of vernon jordan, a long time friend of the clinton family. still ahead on way too early, a new day for the l.a. clippers as a judge approves the team's sale to former microsoft ceo steve ballmer. then, jimmy fallon goes all in on the viral als ice dunking.

further to the north, up around the boston area, it looks like maybe around 6:00 p.m. or so when the final rain bit of rain should be moving out. long island is by far the worst.
