conditions. missouri's governor jay nixon has cancelled his planned appearances today instead to visit ferguson for the first time since the protest began. he will mete with members of the clergy and local leaders about one hour from now. nixon addressed the situation on twitter saying the situation in ferguson does not represent who we are. we must keep the peace by safeguarding citizens and the press. faced off with protesters for a fourth night. at least 16 people were arrested and two officers were injured. among the arrests were st. louis alouis -- laurie's cell phone video -- as they work in the a nearby mcdonald's. he discussed the confrontation, appearing on jose diaz-balart

this last hour. >> we were recording them on video, because a forceful evacuation of a private food chain is news. it's something i could send to viewers and they would see what's going on here on the ground. an officer took exception to that and tried to illegally prevent me from do this, i said i have a right to do this, they threw me up against the soda machine. all the while stop resisting, as i was yelling to them, i'm not resisting, you can arrest me it's fine. >> multiple journalists say that they were targeted by police. this video shows police taking down their camera equipment. this morning the smell of the tear gas was still pungent after police fired it into crowds of aga demonstrators through molotov

cocktails at police. >> i can barely breathe, my nose is burning my lungs are burning. my eyes are burning. you can't escape it. >> joining me now, msnbc's charles hadlock in ferguson, missouri. the tenor of things there, tense to say the liars? >> reporter: yeah, alex, an incredible sequence of events last night, events and images. a lot of people here are wondering whether this is 2014 or 1964 based on the images we saw last night of these heavily armed police officers in s.w.a.t. gear and tactical gear, some of it looking like military gear. approaching people who just hours before had been on a prayer march here on the may have been street of forget. the city of ferguson asked people to do their protests and prayers in public, rather than waiting in the daylight hours

rather than waiting until the evening when they say that rabble-rousers stir up the crowd into confrontations with police. now police at 9:00 last night began firing smoke grenades and then tear gas into the crowd, the police say they were fired on with a molotov cocktail and one officer was hit in the head, but with all the cameras that were rolling, there's no video evidence of that, but there is video evidence of what the police did, they fired into the crowd, they fired into journalists, a reporter and photographer team from ksdk, the local affiliate here, was shot at with a rubber bullet. the al jazeera team was also attacked with tear gas, reporters down the street who were filing their stories from inside the mcdonald's were arrested. the alderman was arrested right here at the scene in his car. he was released this morning. he was charged with something called unlawful assembly here in ferguson. >> okay, charles hadlock, thank

you for the setup there, i appreciate that. joining me now, ferguson's mayor james noel. i would like for you to describe for me what is happening in ferguson right now and how do you keep this from escalating even further? >> we're having a difficult time especially at night which was mentioned before, discerning between those who are peacefully aseming and unlawful protests and hiding among the peaceful people who are trying to have their voices -- we would like to have all of those who wish to protest and assemble to do so and we try to do so in a productive manner and a save manner. unfortunately, when evening hours come, those who want to cause problems and hide under the cover of darkness, and hide behind lawful and peaceful protesters, they come out and they cause problems, and unfortunately, there's a lot of people in the way when that happens. >> sir, do you think police have

responded with an overly heavy hand in the michael brown shooting? i go back to the candle light vigil that was held in which you had police officers on top of . s.w.a.t. trucks looking at those who were allegedly gathering to honor the memory of michael browne. it started back then. >> what your camera is not showing is that gun fire is erupting all around us at this time. as peaceful people protest, as peaceful people have their vigil, there are people outside those lines firing in the air, around through officers, our own police chief was shot at as well as the county police chief was shot at in a drive by. so there is a lot of unlawfulness going around these peaceful protests and that's why we have to be vigilant and i can't second guess these officers, they are the professionals, they have lear ed

from many years of dealing with incidents across the nation, now we're just going to have to try our best to maintain order, and we ask the citizens to help us comply with that. >> you say that your police officers are professional. i don't know if you have seen some of the cell phone videos that have been taken. but are you confident that every single member on your police force is behaving in a professional manner? >> let's understand that there is hundreds of police officers out there, and less than 50 of them are my police officers. so i cannot speak for others, but i am confident that all the law enforcement agencies that are participating are professionals, and if there is some videos that show someone losing their temper in a highly stressful situation, i'm sure they're under a great deal of stress and though it does not make it okay, they are human and i can understand their frustrations as well. just as the protesters are frustrated. >> it has been suggested is that

this is not an isolated understand department in that there are numerous reports of a history of racially fuels incidents in your town. a strained relationship between police, specifically and the citizens of ferguson. and as "the washington post" is pointing out, here's the quote, last late year the state chapter of the naacp filed a o'o'as you know, the population of ferguson is reportedly about 2/3 african-american, though of the 53 person police force which you referenced earlier, there are only three officers of color. what do you make of the strained relationship? >> first of all i know better than "the washington post" knows and we have five officers who are african-american. >> of the 53? >> one hispanic and two pacific islander nations. it doesn't make it any better. but you mentioned filing against

from the naacp. that's against the st. louis county police, not the ferguson police. that is a completely different police department. >> how about this? why has there not been an official accounting of what specifically happened last saturday? why is it taking so long and do you think the police department should release the officer's name? >> well, the official accounting is going to come from the investigating agencies which are at this point the st. louis county police department as well as the fbi and the justice department. so the official accounting is that that information will not be we leareleased until all of been collected. so that's why that's not going to be addressed by our city. as for as the releasing of the police officer's name, again,

that's the st. louis county police, or rather the prosecutor's policy not to produce the name of anybody, of any crime who has not been charged and since the investigation is not completed, there is no charges filed and therefore the name is not being released. >> does it make sense to you, sir, that michael brown who was supposed to start college this past monday would allegedly all the and officer unprovoked, purpose him into his squad car, wrestle for his gun with the possible intent to shoot him. that's what is supposed to have happened. >> i really can't address the issue, i don't know his history, i don't know anything about him. all i do know is that this is a tragic event that this young man lost his life. we have to work with the community to have better relationships with our community.

this is not a ferguson problem, this is a national problem. ferguson has become the point the eruption of this. but as was eluded to of racial problems in our community, that's absolutely false. there were schools that were majority african-american, we have never had these problems in any school i have ever been into and somebody from "the washington post" has no idea what they're talking about. >> so i believe the allegations were not trouble within the citizen citizens and that group of citizens. >> the problem that we have in our community. there is a housing crisis in which people are moving from community to community every six months. and this apartment complex is very transient, we don't have in of those citizen who is get to become set down roots in the community, become part of the community before they move on. so it's hard to establish a good

on the human tarn crisis in iraq. a large scale evacuation of refugees trapped on a mountain night not be necessary. for the first time since that mission began, american forces were on the ground yesterday assessing the situation on the mountain. they found there were fewer refugees trapped than just first thought. more food and supplies can be sent to the area. joining me now is chief pentagon correspondent jim miklaszewski. >> what are you hearing about the conditions on the mountain now? >> hi, alex, that's the thing, the stories that we're still hearing undeniably horrific, starvation and dehydration and people being forced to leave their relatives up there as they make their journey down from the mountain. it raises the question, is there

some kind of delay going on. by the time they get down and reach the refugee camps and we speak to them, perhaps because it's been a few days, those were the people who were up there last week when conditions were much worse. the state department said when their advisors went up in the last 24 hours, they found that conditions were much better, perhaps this is because of the air drop of food and water that's happened in the last few days. it's an incredibly confusing picture, the only thing we know for certain is that those thousands and thousands of people are moving. >> we have fewer yezidis who are on the mountain, but they're flooding into these camps, is there a sense that they're ever going to be able to go back to their homes? >> they're only going to be able to go back to their homes if the peshmerga, the kurdish forces

will need continued u.s. air strikes and a lot of determination to push back and reclaim the land. perhaps the question is, will the yezidis want to go back. we should remember this is not the first time that the yezidis or the christian minority have been pictures cute purse cute p. whatever happens, it's going to be a long time before they even have that option. >> duncan thank you very much for that report. let's go to jim miklaszewski. so mik, did yesterday's promise violate the president's promise not to put boots on the ground? >> according to the white house it did not because, this according to the white house was a humanitarian mission, while those green berets were on top of the mountain assessing the situation involving those yezidi refugees, but there are others who say, look, that's a really

fine line and some of the u.s. military are uncomfortable about drawing that lightning because they say, if you have combat forces on the ground in a combat zone, that's a combat mission. because at any time once the first shot is fired all bets are off. right now it's a squall over definitions. they were on the mountain for 24 hours, they came off safely, they filed their report, their assessment and everybody is moving on at this point. >> achkd the military is assessing that food and water drop. they're going to try to help those refugees get off the mountain? >> they certainly will continue those air drops as necessary, although we're told some of the food and water that had been dropped over the past several days was scattered around the top of the mountains and hadn't even been opened or consumed. so obviously, there's less of a need than they originally thought. but if in fact the kurdish forces help escort the rest of

those yezidis off the mountains, u.s. air strikes temperature rarely have driven the isis rebels from the bottom of the mountain, making it safer for the yezidis to retreat, there certainly will be more surveillance and air strikes aimed at those isis rebels. >> let's bring in right now colonel jack jacobs, medal of honor recipients, colonel jack, you heard the reports of green berets on the ground. >> it's interesting to watch mik smile ruefully, because he's been there a long, long time and he knows when the pentagon is trying to parse some of the extinction, and he's absolutely correct. when the president says no botst on the ground, what he really means is no 82ibility airborne drigs, we have had folks on the

ground for quite some time. and as far as the administration is concerned, this is not the same thing. but what mik says is absolutely correct. i spent a lot of time in combat with vietnamese forces advising, advising, and i spent most of my time fighting. if you're embedded with people, if they're fighting, you're going to fight too. >> the numbers on that mountain has greatly reduced based on the information and intelligence we have been able to put together. there are 2,500 or so who want to leave the mountain, some have said, we want to stay on the mountain, we have our animals here and we feel safer than in the lower elevations. if there's a smaller scale one to rescue those on the mountain who want to get off, would -- >> there will be a lot of them

because 2,500 people is a lot of people. and you also going to have to find a place to put them. they may not want to go to places they have already selected and so on. keeping them up there for a long period of time is probably not advisable. and ultimately they probably will evacuate someplace else. we have done our best to keep them off the mountain and so on. i think we're going to be there doing that for a long period of time. i believe that every time our intelligence photographs satellites sees an increase of isis soldiers in an assembly area, i think we're going to hit them, and i think we're going to keep hitting them for a long period of time until and until the peshmerga is trained sufficiently to alone fight

we're just getting word from the white house that the president will be addressing the press corps. it will happen about 12:15 eastern time from martha's vin yard, we do not know the contents of what the president will be saying. we know that the president and hillary clinton came face to face last night for the very first time after a very public flap over foreign policy. the event was closed to the press so we're not sure if the two actually got to hug it out as the former secretary of state stayed they would be doing at a book signing. >> are you going to hug it out with the president. >> absolutely, yeah, we're looking forward to it. >> nbc's kristen welker is in

martha's vineyard following the president for us. before we get to the situation last night. any word on what the president will be talking about some 45 minutes from now? >> we don't know specifically what he will be addressing, but he put out a statement responding to the developments in ferguson, calling for calm there, calling for an end to the violence. and the riots that have been occurring there, we also know that the president was briefed last night by attorney general eric holder and his senior advise for valerie jarrett, so clearly the white house monitoring this situation quite closely, they're also monitoring the developments outs of iraq. i just heard you discussing that. the fact that after pentagon officials were able to access the top of that mountains, it was determined there might not need to be the rescue operation because there are fewer of those heal

ethnic minorities. we along with you are waiting for the president's arrival just got 45 minutes from now. >> let's turn to last night, what went down, what do you know about it? >> reporter: all right, well, we are getting some details, alex. the white house won't say if the president and his former secretary of state actually hugged it out. but we do know a few things, one white house official says that their interaction was cordial it was friendly, they sat at the first table along with former president bill clinton and this is as both sides are really trying to tamp down any longering optics that there might be tensions between these two camps. in a recent article published in the atlantic magazine, former secretary of state hillary clinton criticized the president's foreign policy suggesting that he could have done more to stop terrorists in iraq and also his policy of don't do stupid stuff was not a guiding principle.

that got a really bad backlash. but some democrats really saw that as a slap in the face to the president. so former secretary clinton called president bhaum to try to smooth thing over on tuesday, and then at that book signing which you just talked about, she reit rated how proud she was so serve under him. but alex, this obviously underscores the challenge she's going to havive she does decide to throw her hat into the ring in this next presidential election, she will need to politically distance herself in some ways from the president. but if she does it in the wrong way, she risks alienating the president's base, the voters that she's going to need to win the nomination. that is the fine line that she's going to have to walk. but again, bothsides saying today that they're just trying to month on. one more nugget i'll tell you about that dinner, alex, it's an important one, of course, what they ate, we are told that they

ann, good evening, i understand you got to speak directly with the pope on the plane? >> reporter: i did, alex, it's one of the privileges you have when you travel on the papal plane, you get about 30 seconds with the pope and i entintroduc myself and i asked him a direct question and the popularity of an american visit, because that's certainly what everybody in the u.s. wants to know about. i asked him, will you come to philadelphia? and he said yes, and then he went on to mention world family day, that will take place in the city of brotherly love in 2015. what does that all mean? it certainly expos what -- [ no audio ] world family day, but the vatican said after that announcement, look, there's nothing official, and in fact nothing official will happen until about six months before

overall is becoming more sensitive to the needs of its troops overall? >> i would. say so much sensitive to the needs of the troops. i think more so, they're taking the opportunity to become more educated by the diversity that is the military today. >> did a lot of your fellow soldiers voice their displeasure of what the previous rules were and did you have a lot of support from colleagues? >> definitely. i had a great amount of support from both of my colleagues from leadership. they truly understood the heart of the matter. and i had a lot of support on all fronts. >> and often times, even when you have say very long hair and you can braid it or put it in corn rows, often times i have seen female members of the military, they have put it up into a bun or put it over their hats anyway, right? >> definitely -- almost as

from the military to civilian transition. thank you so much for being here. >> thank you, alex, it's great to be here. >> i'm glad you're here, a lot of people from our forces. we have -- 1.5 million troops. they are expected to leave the military over the next five years or so. if you could put a key to their success for returning to civilian life and getting that job, what is it? >> well, i think there's many. but i think the key is to figure out what their value proposition is. the military is a very collaborative culture. how the squad or unit performs. but in civilian culture we focus on the individual. what makes you special. what makes you stand out and how can i as an employer imagine you're going to provide value to my company. and that's a big disconnect for veterans coming out of service. >> i read about that in detail with part of my research that you talk about that we mentality and the fact is that they don't talk about "i."

they are in such a group mentality helping others, but it's a hard line to walk to say, i am so great, you need to hire me without coming off in a way that's unappealing. >> right. i'm not an advocate of putting neon lights around somebody's name or photo on linked in but it is about being able to articulate what it is you can add that's valuable to that potential employer. and that does mean navigating that discomfort of feeling disloyal or worrying that you're bragging with the ability to say, this is who i am. this is what i'm passionate about and this is where i can add value to your organization or your effort. that's how civilians are competing in the marketplace globally. >> rates for unemployment, young veterans, alarmingly high. i don't have to tell you, but look at them. 9% per post-9/11 veterans. veterans under 25, 21.4%. military spouse unemployment, that sits at roughly 25%. what are some of the reasons for these alarming numbers?

>> i think again a lot of it is that disconnect. you take somebody who has served in the military or the spouse who supported them and moved around as that military person was being moved, and they come back with a resume that shows spotty job consistency. lack of transferrable skills or perceived transferrable skills, and that makes it very difficult to compete with somebody whose credentials and value proposition lines up with what a hiring manager is looking for. that's also where the opportunity lies. when a veteran can translate and not just demilitarize a resume but really translate those skills into the civilian language. and at the same time when we can train hiring managers to understand what a military resume looks like and how those skills and talents and experiences really do translate into what we're looking to hire. it has to happen on multiple fronts. >> are there certain things that you think are typical of veterans that they have certain

skills? what comes to mind, engineering or quick reaction, excellent focus, working under pressure. i mean, things like this, they have to be able to do well. >> well, absolutely. if you consider that they have been trained to be combat ready, which means at a moment's notice respond to volatile and often unpredictable situations, makes them highly skilled for scenarios like that. but there are also skills that transfer into careers that maybe aren't life and death that don't have that high level of stress but where a company needs creative problem solving, someone who can bring an outside perspective. and they also have competed effectively in cultural situations that many civilians in the u.s. haven't. so a company that has a global presence, for instance, that might need its teams to understand the narrative and the nuance of cultural diversity. a veteran is going to bring wonderful value there. they are extremely trainable. so i always tell civilian hiring managers that just because the resume may not match, consider

that when they entered the service, they didn't have those skills either. they are extremely trainable. >> can you give me at least a few of the ten things that you wrote about in the article of entrepreneur magazine. the ten things they want hiring managers to know about them? >> i think the one that stood out to me is not all veterans have ptsd. and ptsd has a stigma attached to it. it's a real condition that many are managing. and i use the word managing because they are managing through the medical treatments and the counseling that they received. but not every veteran who served in combat has ptsd and i think as civilians we can do more to understand that. i think the other one that really stood out for me and it was demonstrated recently when i met a veteran who greeted me at a job fair wearing sunglasses. i said why are you wearing sunglasses? he said i'm not looking for a handout, but i think people can see my fear. and veterans don't want charity. they want a job. they want to contribute back to society in a way that they did
