new details on the health of the late actor and the state of mind that lead him to take his own life. take note for the next mother's day. what a son did to get this mom's reaction. it is priceless and a heart felt moment. we'll reveal it in the cooler. in is "way too early"! she's so sweet. hi, everybody. good morning, i'm sorry thomas roberts it's friday, august 15th. the show where we celebrate moms every day of the year. hi, mom. i know, you're watching. let's start off this hour in ferguson, missouri. it's a story we've been covering this week. today we start off with a glimmer of hope in the town. after days of chaotic protests and the violent police reaction following the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teen by a cop. we now, for the first time in five nights, have police not
2:31 am
involved in heated clashes with demonstrators. instead the protesters drove through the streets honking horns. others played music and shared food without reports of violence. the change came just hours after democratic governor nixon put the highway patrol in charge of security. governor nixon vowing the change would bring a different tone following the days of unrest. >> what is going on here is not what is missouri is about. it's not what ferguson is about. it's a place where people work, go to school, raise families, and go to church. a diverse community. a missouri community. late it seems like a war zone. it's unacceptable. to change the course we're going to need to join hands to rebuild the trust that has been broken. >> the man now in charge of highway patrol captain ronald johnson walking with protesters in the streets later in the day. president obama spoke publicly about the death of 18-year-old michael brown and the violence
2:32 am
that ensued. he said there is no excuse for violence by or against police officers and urged the community to come together. >> let's remember that we're all part of one american family. we're united in common value, and that includes belief in equality under the law. a basic respect for public order, and the right to peaceful public protest. so now is the time for healing, now is the time for peace and calm on the streets of ferguson. now is the time for an open and transparent process to see that justice is done. now i want to go to jay gray. who has more from ferguson, missouri. >> hey, good morning. it's great to talk to you. maybe it's a new strategy or the new leadership for police on the ground here or maybe the call for an end to the violence first from the governor and then from president obama. whatever the case, things were much different here overnight.
2:33 am
different not over. because there were hundred of protesters that poured into the streets. it was calm. there was no violence, but still very vocal and still a group of citizens who want answers and want an open transparent investigation into the death of the unarmed teenager 18-year-old michael brown who was shot by a ferguson police officer last saturday. there is no leadership, as we talked about. it's captain ron johnson from the highway patrol assigned to handle security here by the governor. he is someone who grew up here and still lives in ferguson. we saw him on the streets last night mingling with protesters saying he understands what is happening here. he understands the investment involved here and the issues. because he's a part of the community. other officers also a part of the protest. a show of unity, if you will,
2:34 am
but i think everyone understands here this, again, isn't over. in fact, it's just one step, the first step in what is sure to be a long, very difficult journey. that is the latest from here in ferguson, missouri. i'm jay gray. thomas, back to you. >> thank you, sir. much appreciated. >> the demonstrations are not just limited to ferguson. a national moment of silence was held in more than 100 different cities in honor of the 18-year-old. in times square thousands marched chanting hands up don't shoot. some protesters carried signs honoring brown. police say five protesters were arrested but the demonstration remained largely peaceful. to other news now amid speculation about weather robin williams relapsed and problems with addiction. his widow was saying the actor was beginning to experience symptoms of parkinson disease.
