good morning, everyone. welcome to "weekends with alex wit witt". new looting and rock throwing as 200 took to the streets of ferguson, missouri. lawmakers con fronted demonstrators throwing the at least one can of tear gas. >> we have tear gas. get out of here. >> no arrests were made. state highway patrol captain ron johnson said some threw rocks and other objects at police. the crowd gathered just hours after police released new details about the shooting that left unarmed teen michael brown dead. police identified the officer who shot brown as darren wilson. investigators also released this surveillance video on friday. a man who appears to be brown is seen right there stealing cigars from a local convenience store. brown's family is angry about the release of the video, calling it character assassination. earlier this morning, a group of

4:03 am
scale police presence here that we saw throughout the day yesterday transformed into we saw more riot gear and armored police come out. that's when they started block aiding major streets where protesters had been convening and gathering and telling the protesters to disperburse and le for the night. >> how does this compare, the tenor? was it the same or worse? >> for the police force, while they were present they weren't advancing on the protesters in a similar fashion. they didn't have an aggressive response to the protesters. and in many ways the looting, where they were standing just feet away as they busted down the door that had been blocked over the liquor store.

we saw a bunch of protesters, mostly young men, running out carrying liquor under their arms. but that happened just yards away. where at least four, maybe five armored vehicles were resting. so you could hear over the intercom, many police officers were saying please disburse. this is for your own good and safety. meanwhile, it was almost as if they were taunting the police being so near while they were looting the liquor store. >> after police released that liquor store video, let's listen to brown's cousin. >> earlier the chief released video that we somewhat was smoke and mirrors on divert the attention from what really occurred. the event had nothing to do with
4:05 am
the convenience store. >> as we look at your latest article it's titled ferguson community fed up with evolving police investigation. so, what are people telling you there? >> people are really upset with the way the police handled it. we had officials released simultaneously not just the name of the officer responsible for the event but the report on the alleged theft. they said it sends so many signals. in the initial press conference, they scurried away without answering questions. he had to later come back and clarify many of his previous statements, including saying that the officer did not know that brown was a suspect at the time that he saw them. >> right. >> but he later backtracked on that as well. people are upset. they don't believe the story they are hearing. they feel there are major gaps they are not being filled in. >> amman ta, thank you for
4:06 am
reporting on msnbc.com. >> richard, good morning to you. why did they release this tape, especially after the police chief said the robbery was not related to the initial contact between the officer and brown. he said he stopped them because they were walking down the middle of the street blocking traffic allegedly. give me your reaction to all of this. >> i think the ferguson police department has shown levels -- high levels of incompetence here. i think this is just another example of that. as i was driving over here this morning, alex, i thought about it really hard. how many other police departments in the country are as in competent as ferguson? you don't know until you know. it is like a pipe with the pin hole. when the water comes out that's what you see there really is a leak. that's why there is so much anger on the streets of ferguson and all across america. this police department has the highest level of incompetence that i have seen.
4:07 am
>> michael brown's family is calling the release of this video character assassination. let's listen to that. >> mike brown jr. could have been a white day, asian guy. if you have your hands in the air and the police fire shots at you, i think all of you would be assembling it rye now to find the answers out to that situation. so this is a community wide, nationwide call to understand the incident that happened on that day. >> and this is echoing your sentiments, richard. referred jesse jackson is calling full transparently. are you confident a fair and accurate investigation. >> hopefully the fbi will bring transparently so this case. they try to make this connection between this robbery and the shooting of michael brown. that's a really, really big problem here. here's why. one, there's two facts that are
4:08 am
the most important facts. the first fact is this police officer didn't know michael brown could have possibly been involved. two, michael brown was unarmed. that's what we have to get across as folks try to shift and turn and mold the story. the fact that remember is that michael brown was unarmed with his hands up when this police officer decided to use force. and that is the problem. that's where the anger comes from alex. most importantly, that is why people are upset all across the country. and right there in ferguson. he was shot. he was an unarmed individual shot simply because he was walking in the street. that's the problem. >> i know you have been all over this on your radio show. talk to me about that and how this applies specifically to this situation. >> it is one of those situations where we have to work on having a different conversation in this country. hopefully this will be the turning point or tipping point where you can have that
4:09 am
conversation. there is a problem with african-american men and police officers. and we have to have a discussion about it. he talked to the folks at the high school. he talks to the students. he worked on engaging that and acknowledging that. he made the a huge difference how this transpired. what happened is the police officers approach an african-american man, you have anxiety, it leads to bad attitudes and sometimes excessive force by police officers. the only way to change that, alex, is by working together to change the conversation in this country. it's not to happen right now. i don't know if the country can afford another ferguson. >> thank you so much, richard fowler. good seeing you. >> thanks, alex. >> identified the officer who shot and killed michael brown. mark potter, what is the latest
4:10 am
we know about this? what have you learned? >> reporter: the police were reluck at that point in time to reveal his name for a while. they were citing security concerns for him and his family. under increasing pressure, they finally relented. we know he is darren wilson, that he is 28 years old. he is a six-year officer. four years in the ferguson police department. two years in a neighboring department. he's described by his chief as someone who had no disciplinary problems. he described him as "a distinguished officer." he said the officer is very broken up about what happened and never intended for this to happen. he is under administrative leave. that is normal when there is a case being investigated. it is not only being investigated by local authorities but also by the fbi. they are not saying how long this investigation can take, nor are they revealing any details yet on what they might have learned in the course of this investigation. alex? >> okay.
4:11 am
mark potter, thank you for the latest there on the officer. appreciate that. a bit later everyone, we will hear from the attorney for the brown family and ask about the timing of the release of the information in the investigation. that's coming your way after a break in five minutes. before that break, let's go to the weather and storms expected this weekend. keith carson is here with the forecast. good morning, keith. >> good morning, alex. the spot we're watching is in through the midwest. this upper level low diving down, interacting with the jet stream and moisture as well. it has enough ingredients to give us showers and thunderstorms. we know that. the question is how many will be strong to severe as they push towards the midwest. good news, in places like chicago not involved. the biggest city in the me the not going to see severe storms. springfield, st. louis, paducah, connecticut. we won't see much rotation. more so large hail, strong straight-line damaging winds. same against north dakota, south dakota, into montana. severe weather a possibility

at a quarter past the hour. a live look at the streets of ferguson, missouri, calm this morning after another night of violence. looting and rock throwing erupted overnight. it came after authorities identified the officer who fatalitily shot michael brown. they released video of the man appears to be brown stealing cigars from a convenience store shortly before he died. joining me now is the attorney for michael brown's family. let's start with the video that chief tom jackson released. did the family know this video existed? did they know what was coming? >> no, they did not. they were outraged and the devious matter that the police chief chose to disseminate in
4:17 am
piecemeal fashion. even though they were outraged, alex, i toll them they have been doing this a long time. i expect that from the police when they can't justify the murder. they tried to do smoke and mirrors. there is nothing in the facts before us that can justify the execution style murder of this unarmed teenager in broad daylight. >> and you called the release of this video a character assassination. and juxta pose that with what the police chief is saying, which was they are trying to get more information out and balance the inflammatory nature of what was happening out there. >> well, alex, you know, this local community is very distrustful of the ferguson police department. and, you know, why would you release -- if you're trying to be transparent -- steal photographs of what appear to be michael brown but you don't release photographs of the person who shot him? >> the st. louis county police department have now taken over
4:18 am
this criminal investigation. you have been calling for it to be transparent and forthright. what is your biggest concern at the present time, especially now that there is a new department overseeing everything? >> well, alex, in doing a lot of these police type brutality type cases, i, like the local community, are very distrustful. as these agencies work hand in hand together, day in and day out. they police themselves. it normally doesn't turn out fair for the person laying on the ground. so what we are calling for is an independent investigation from the justice department the, completely independent of anything that the st. louis law enforcement agencies have to do with. because we think it's going to be very important to not just ferguson but to america and everybody watching that this autopsy, these ballistic
4:19 am
reports, the number of times he was shot, and the trajectory of those bullets are put forth very clearly and transparent. so the question addressed, why was this man executed in broad daylight. he put up his hands. the universal sign of surrender. but yet the police kept shooting. >> benjamin, i know you have asked for a second autopsy to be done. is that because you want all of those details the you just chronicled for us, you want those to be confirmed? >> absolutely. the family is very distrustful. we think they are going to try to justify this execution. but we think there is no justification. and when those findings come out, everybody in the world will see that this is america. you can't expect people who put their hands up over cigarettes or whatever you have in that store.
4:20 am
we don't execute our most hardened criminals when they put their hands in the air and surrender. we didn't do it to saddam hue same or any other person. why did this child get executed in broad daylight? >> pretty powerful the way you are putting things, benjamin. the fbi has been canvassing the neighborhood looking for eyewitnesses to the shooting. do you think there's anyone out there that could come forward to give corroborating evidence to either side? >> it's very likely, alex. because the local community is very distrustful of the law law enforcement agencies. and they fear retribution. when all the cameras leave, their history with the police department has not been good. so this is a culmination of those relevant factors. and michael brown, unfortunately, was the, you know, thing that blew the pot open.
4:21 am
and it's so emotional for the people who live there. >> yeah. >> they have seen police officers get away over and over again after they have killed their children. >> pretty emotional for all of us too seeing this across the country as well. always good to talk to you. thanks so much. i know we will be talking again. >> thank you, alex. today, indicted. governor rick perry was indicted on two felony charges, abuse of power and coercion of a public servant. he tried to force rosemary lehmburg out of office. >> the grand jury has spoken that at least there is probable cause to believe that he committed to two crimes. two felony crimes. for count 1, it is 5 to 99 years in prison. for count 2, it is 2 to 10 years in prison. i looked at the law. i looked at the facts. and i presented everything
4:22 am
possible to the grand jury. >> well, governor perry has vowed to aggressively fight the charges. his personal attorney released a statement that reads in part, "i am outraged and appalled that the grand jury is taking this action. it is abuse of the court system and there is no legal basis. the facts conclude that the governor veto was lawful, appropriate and well within the authority of the office of the governor. joining me now in studio, lynn sweet, washington bureau chief and phillip blum. with a welcome to both of you. lynn, politically, it couldn't get messier for all sides, right? give your analysis for all sides here. >> on the mega level, it hurts for perry who was thinking of a 2016 presidential bid. it mystifies a lot of people to know you can even be indicted on these charges which looks like a political fight at large. so he has problems because an indictment is an indictment. and when there's an srebgz like

4:24 am
has to deal with over the course of the next year, two years, it puts him in contrast of what his party is accusing the president of doing. >> do you think he can run for the president of the country? >> the head of the republican governors association, a trial run for a presidential bid. >> but he has "indicted" in the headlines. >> that is why it is a problem for him. if he stops it's hard to get restarted. and this is something that is a hard charge to get people when they hear it out. >> they may hear it as political infighting. no, it's not good. >> his personal attorney did say this was well within his legal right to do so. >> the veto. >> the constitution right. >> he made a threat before the veto, which is the real issue in terms of what the actual legal
4:25 am
charges are. >> he might have been the future guest speaker at a county or state dinner, this puts him hard to put on the please invite list. >> phillip, i know you have been writing about the situation. where does that stand? >> so it's nowhere yet. congress is in recess. it's august. they raised this bill which would limit. there is a policy that exists that allows the department of defense to transfer this to local police departments. essentially what the bill would do is limit the sorts of things that -- none of these essentially tanks. >> is this stuff that had been on the battle fields in iraq. >> yes. >> they have repurposed them. >> and the pentagon thought it was a good idea. actually, of all the people to come out against this militarization is senator rand paul. >> interesting.

isis yesterday afternoon. survivors say they attacked a village in northern iraq and demanded they convert to islam. when they refused, isis killed 80 men and kidnapped the women and children. joining me now is retired colonel jake jacobs. what do we know about this alleged kidnapping and killing of 80 men. >> they go into a place and does exactly what you just described. this isn't the only one. it won't be the last. there are pockets of isis roaming all over the place. we have been tending to focus the "top of the mountain" and the refugees who were there, many of them who are now off. in fact, there are villages all over the place in the low lands and isis is all over the place, invading villages and doing exactly this. >> the targeting of the dam, the
4:48 am
mosul dam, you're not surprised. >> that is a terrific military directive. it is relatively easy. all you have to do is control the the two ends of it. the dam itself provides hydroelectric power for the southern part of iraq. and it really is strategically important. getting rid of isis from that is also relatively easy. all we would have to do is target both ends. but so far we haven't done that. >> is it most effective to continue using drone strikes, or are we going to have to step it up? >> a little bit of both. continuing to use drone strikes, good idea. where we find mortars, platoons of troops and assembly areas, we will target them with drones. at the end of the day, we won't be able to get rid of isis unless and until the iraqi army
4:49 am
can control that terrain. that means they have to be there in numbers. they have to be properly trained. they have to stay there. so far there doesn't seem to be any of that. >> what to you the hear from your contacts in the military? do they want to go in and get these guys? >> oh, sure. they always want to saddle up and get into the action. but at the end of the day, sending troops in there will be good tactically. but strategically the only thing that makes any sense is to go there and stay there. we left precipitously and left an iraqi army not willing to serve the iraqi government, which was weak and corrupt. so if we want to do something to have a lasting impact, it's going to be something nobody wants to do. certainly not politically. that's go in force, get rid of isis and stay for a long period of time. >> colonel jack jacobs, i appreciate your time, especially that hour in los angeles. thank you very much. >> my pleasure. a dream vacation that went

a young american couple is facing murder charges in indonesia after the body of the woman's mother was found stuffed inside a suitcase. 19-year-old heather mack and her 21-year-old boyfriend tommy schaeffer were arrested after the body of sheila von weise mack was found in the suitcase in the trunk of a taxi outside a bali resort. friends of the mother say the family was having problems. >> just spoke to sheila a week and a half ago. we were discussing how the -- some things that was going on. >> i heard that they had some, like, domestic issues especially after their -- after hth heather's dad died. >> msnbc analyst and former fbi profiler clint van zandt joins us now. talk about a grisly murder. what do investigators look for here trying to put together a

psychological profile? >> they do. we know the 19-year-old girl was adopted. we know there has been significant long-term issues over a period of about eight or nine years. there was well over 80 police calls, calls to the police in chicago, some issue between the mother and the daughter, so this is an ongoing problem. and now they wind up in paradise and we get this -- we get this lizzie borden story where allegedly the daughter and/or her boyfriend instead of an ax initially used some time of glass statute to hit and bash and traumatize and murder the mother but then our lizzie borden story continues because somehow they have to get a large human body into a relatively small suitcase and there's only so many ways you can do that. >> oh, yeah, yeah. uh. what about financial motivation here? because it's reported that earlier this year police found schaeffer in a high-end chicago

hotel with heather. they paid for the hotel with the mother's credit card. is that a possible contributing factor here? >> yeah, i think there's been some ongoing issues between the mother and the daughter on finances and many other things. now we've got the daughter in custody claiming that she's pregnant. we've got the local authorities where they're being held internationally saying if, in fact, they prove the 19-year-old daughter or the 21-year-old boyfriend are responsible for the death and if it was premeditated, alex, they will face the firing squad so that will be a very big issue internationally american citizens murder someone overseas and face a firing squad for their alleged crime. >> wow. you're right. hadn't thought that far ahead. i know, clint, that there were 86 calls to police over the last ten years. >> yeah. >> neighbors as we heard earlier, they were saying there were domestic issues. investigators are concluding

that mack and schaeffer intentionally carried out this murder. it seems the most bizarre way to murder someone. so, if we go inside an investigation what prompts a criminal to take this kind of action if murder's the objective? >> well, many times you don't feend murderers are the smartest people in the world and notwithstanding what we see on television, a homicide, a murder, especially a grisly murder where you have a blunt -- where you have an object and blunt-force trauma, you have blood spatter and everything else you'd see on "csi" that would take place, so after the alleged crime supposedly, these two people, the 19, the 21-year-old used towels, sheets, to try to mop everything up. then they stuffed the mother's body inside this suitcase. >> yeah. >> they take the suit case downstairs, stick it in a taxi, and then they tell the driver we'll be right back. they run out the back door, alex and leave the bag in the taxi. what do you think the taxi driver is going to do? he dials the equivalent of 911.
