tv   Way Too Early  MSNBC  September 10, 2014 2:30am-3:01am PDT

2:30 am
do not mess up the hair and selfie-making device. this is "way too early." you were away? you were away. hi, everybody. thomas roberts. it's wednesday, september 10th. the ice bucket challenge, you can still donate and just found out jen was never challenged to the bucket. never challenged to the bucket. we'll have to figure out a way to get her challenged to the bucket. she was away on vacation during that stuff. and a jam-packed show. we begin at the white house, president obama hours away now from unveiling his plans to confront islamic state militants in iraq and syria. addressing the nation at 9:00 eastern time and is prepared to authorize air strikes against isis in syria.
2:31 am
president obama told congressional leaders he does not need lawmakers approval to conduct strikes on these militants however is expected to ask congress to authorize the training and arming of more moderate members of the syrian rebellion. senate minority leader mish mcconnell expects many members of congress to back the president but urging him to let wong weigh nnkts i said when elizabeth warren begins to sound like dick cheney, you know it's pretty broad bipartisan support for dealing with this group of terrorists. i think my answer would be, he really ought to be asking for our support whether or not he may think he's authorized to do what he intends to do. i think it would be in his best interests and the country's best interests. >> so it was exactly one year ago today that president obama gave another address about possible military action in syria, and back then, he was treating president bashar al assad, fighting the same
2:32 am
militants the u.s. is facing in the region. unlike public opinion today, many americans were reluctant to support military abc at that tithat -- action at that time. new polls points to a growing concern osier national security. according to nbc news and the "wall street journal," 47% of americans feel less safe today than before the attacks of zpt 1 11 september 11th. and more than 60% say it's in our country's interest to take military action against isis. but the nation is divided over whether to incorporate combat troops or air strikes alone. 94% of americans say they've had heard about the two beheaded u.s. journalists, and that's more than any other news event the poll covered in the past five years. and americans support of president obama's strategy.
2:33 am
32% of his handling of foreign affairs. nearly one-third of democrats disapprove. another high. republicans are overwhelmingly seen as more capable of managing the nation's foreign policy over democrats. when it comes to who can best handle the nation's defense, republicans again are favored over democrats by 38%. so president obama's overall approval rating remains at an all-time low. 40%. you see there. and americans would prefer republicans to take control of congress by a narrow margin. just two points. but the margin widens to ten points in states with key senate elections. of registered voters who prefer a republican congress, 59% say it's because they oppose president obama and his party. americans are still pessimistic about the direction of the country. more than two-thirds say we're on the wrong track. all right. now we move on to our other top story this morning involving the nfl. the commissioner, roger goodell
2:34 am
standing by the position it had not seen the full casino video that led to ray rice's suspension telling cbs news the league has been transparent about what it knew and when it knew it. >> yesterday morning. i got into the office and our staff had come to me and said there's new evidence. there's video that you need to see, and i watched it and -- >> did you know a tape existed? >> we aren't seen the tape that occurred in the elevator. we assumed there was, asked for video but were everybody inner granted that opportunity. >> so did anyone in the nfl see the second videotape before monday? >> no. >> no one in the nfl? >> no one in the nfl. to my knowledge, and i asked that same question and the answer to that is, no. >> meanwhile, the baltimore ravens owner wrote a lengthy
2:35 am
letter to stakeholders apologizing for failing to pursue the video and the team's own investigation. now, more vigorously, steve bisciotti says they stopped trying to obtain the video saying we did not do all we should have and no amount of explanation can remedy that. he went on to say seeing the full video changed everything and now the new head of emergency state senate is calling on the attorney general to pro prosecutors handling of the case. reaction on tuesday by ray rice and his wife, saying i have to be strong for my wife. she is so strong. we are in good spirits and janae rice blamedmedia for making them relive that over and over saying, this is our life. what did you all cigarette if your intentions were to hurt us,
2:36 am
embarrass us, take our happiness away you succeeded. know we will continue to grow and show the world what real love is. how teammates reacted after tuesday's big game. >> i don't condone what someone has done but i'm also not going to be the judge and jury. >> obviously, doesn't paint a good picture of who ray is as a person but, i've played with ray, this would have been the seventh year and sometimes good people make bad decisions and put themselves in a bad light and, really, my heart goes out to him and his family, and i hope they get through this as best they can. >> i think we have to question the judgment of some of the media outlets as far as the constant re-airing of the video. you know, forcing janae, the victim to relive this emotional and physical abuse. i think that's terrible.
2:37 am
i think it's absolutely awful. >> so when we look at the professional aspect of all of this, rice is likely going to lose a small fortune on licensing because nike endeded relationship it had with the running back. ea sports removed his player profile from the popular madden video game and ravens exchanging his jersey for others at stadium stores. several candidates are looking ahead to november after winning races on the final day of primary season. and receiving just under 50% of the vote and in his victory speech, brown tried to draw a direct lynch between his new opponent and president obama. >> we know what to expect if she's rewarded for another term. whatever comes next on the obama agenda, whatever team obama asks of senator shaheen, there is an absolute 99% chance that she'll
2:38 am
vote? and i don vote yes. i don't know about you but i do not like those odds. if we're ever going to hold this president accountable we have to hold this senator accountable as well and this chance will not come again. so let's take it right now and turn this country around! >> all right. on the other side of things, senator shaheen also head a rally last night to kick off her campaign in one of the races that will determine which party controls the senate. taking brown to tsk fask for mo from the state of massachusetts i. didn't ju . >> i didn't just move here. [ cheers and applause ] i've been here, trying to make a difference for new hampshire. [ applause ] but no matter where scott brown
2:39 am
lives, he's going to put scott brown first. not you. not your family, and not new hampshire. >> in new york, democratic governor andrew cuomo survived a primary challenge from the left. he had more than 60% of vote, but his opponent received a better than 34%. and in massachusetts, a marine vet defeated nine-time democrat congressman john tyranny. we turn to business news. wall street is looking to make up for yesterday's losses. the dow had its biggest one-day drop in a month falling noorn 97 points. apple even after his new product announcement didn't do much to help out. steve sedgwick live from london. first, big news concerning detroit and bankruptcy there. bring us up to speed on that. >> reporter: absolutely. viewers will know the biggest municipal bankruptcy in american history as well, trying to get detroit back on track with a new

business, and also apple. everybody talking about it today and the products that they unveiled yesterday. investors not as impressed but a lot of positive feedback on twitter. so what did the stock say, though? >> could have been a rumor set on the phenomena here. shares had a good run-up. went from 700 down to 500 and a stock split. back up to $100, equivalent in old money, back up to $700. they ride 5% on the back of the announcement and came off low other than the session. seems that people expected the watch, expected the iphone 6 but just a little underwhelmed perhaps on the time scale when the iwatch will be available. shares traded 14 times forward, getting technical. cheaper than the broader nasdaq and cheaper than the likes the yahoo! facebook, the other big names out there. >> a surprise, anymore in jo big
