the now infamous tape. call for the resignation are getting louder. several nfl owners suggest that's not on the cards, at least for now. nbc peter alexander starts off this morning. craig, good morning, the ravens, last night. two games into the 2014 season and think about this, if this latest video had not come out showing ray rice punching his then fiancè, rice would be allowed to return to his team, return to the field. instead he's suspended from the league indefinitely and the league itself is facing tough new scrutiny. with the ravens returning to action, most eyes are focussed on what is happening off the fiel field. the role of roger goodell. ray rice told told goodell he punched his wife in the face three months ago. a statement that contradicts
8:01 am
this statement. >> when we met with rice and his representatives, he was ambiguous about what happened. >> goodell said the latest video released by tmz sports was inconsistent with what rice told him. a source with knowledge made it clear he hit her. and he told goodell he was sorry and it wouldn't happen again. the nfl launched an investigation. who stressed our sole motive is to get the truth, the findings made public. >> bottom line there are two owners who are have franchises collectively worth over $3 billion. i think it's important for them to make sure ha whatever comes out is accurate, is transparent, and rapid. outside the reigns sta ravens s surprising number of female fans. >> she struck him first and any woman who can hit a man can be hit back.
8:02 am
>> thursday night's nfl broadcast had a different feel. cbs sports in light of the rice scandal changed the pregame show. dropping a comedic segment and the opening sequence set to music by rihanna. herself a victim of domestic violence. >> the nfl is also under fire for other domestic violence cases. the carolina panther's owner broke down publicly this week. >> my stance is one of indifference. i stand firmly against domestic violence plain and simple. >> critics are four courthouuri. hardy is currently appealing the conviction. so about this investigation roger goodell said that he will fully cooperate. he'll make league personnel available, provide access to their record. ray rice doesn't have to cooperate if he doesn't want to. nor frankly do the law

enforcement personnel and the officials, the workers at the casino where the video tape was shot. as for goodell's status, earlier this week before the investigation was announced, john mara, one of the owners who is overseeing this investigation, said in a statement that the idea that goodell's job was in jeopardy was misguided. craig? >> peter alexander this morning, washington post editor of the early lead sports blog cindy is here with me. as pete said there earlier espn is outside the law enforcement is reporting ray rice told roger goodell on june 16th he punched his then fiancè. ravens general manager telling the baltimore sun that he and harbaugh folk rice and his version of what happened matched what was on the tape. roger goodell told cbs that the rice account was, quote, ambiguous. what do you make of that? >> well, it certainly doesn't
8:04 am
reconcile does it? i think it's troubling. i think the nfl was hoping if roger goodell went on cbs news this would kind golf aw away. it hasn't. people continue to connect the dots. there are so many sources. i'm almost leery people go down the rabbit hole of who said what when. the real issue was what did they think was on the video? they saw the initial video of her being dragged out the elevator unconscious. he didn't lull her to sleep. something bad happened. i think, you know, i hope that doesn't get lost in the questions about who said what when. >> there's a new element of the story that seems to be emerging today. the "wall street journal" reporting that goodell did not pursue the investigation as vigorously he as he might have out of respect for janay.
8:05 am
goodell said they left the meeting leaviing jay nay was unconscious because she had fallen burg the scuffle. >> everyone heard the discussion that jay nay was in the meeting. why would you bring the victim in there to sit with the alleged perpetrator? it makes no sense. i think that was another example of how the whole inquiry was bungled here. you know, i'm kind of curious how he thinks that actually had janay palmer's best interests at hand. the legal system took no action. ble they were both initially arrested. rice was the one who went through the pretrial program. and the legal system took no action there against either of them. i do understand he was in a

difficult spot. >> as we've been reporting here, the nfl launched its own investigation being lead by robert mueller. it's overseen by the steeler's own and the new york giants owner. it's intended to be an independent investigation. nbc sports points out that muller works for the law firm that helped nfl negotiate the multibillion dollar contract with direct tv. we also know, of course, that mara and raoni have a pretty good relationship with roger goodell as well. is it troubling at all when we look at precisely how independent the investigation might be? or even the perception that it might not be as independent >>well, thing is that perception. and i think it is troubling. i think everyone wants to get to the bottom of this, get the facts, and move on and, you know, i think that the raven' president worked for the same
8:07 am
law firm as mueller. there are all these sort of, you know, shirt tail relations between these people. they've had contact with one another at one time or another. i think you kind vf to look at this and say are we going to get some answers on this? >> yeah. >> and i think people want to hear this. i don't think a whitewash of this is going to go over. i don't given how angry people have been at goodell since july. >> washington post, thank you. i want to bring in terri o'neal president of the national organization of women when is calling on the commissioner to step down. ahead of the last night's raven's game. you probably saw this, terri, something that caught my eye. we saw a lot of women wearing ray rice jerseys there in baltimore. one moment in peter's piece, one woman laid part of the blame on
8:08 am
janay. >> i feel i still love ray. he's a good man. made a mistake. what can i say? i still standby him. >> i love ray rice. he's done a lot more baltimore, even though i don't condone what he did. okay. i'm not saying that what he did was right. >> do the women in baltimore love ray rice more than they hate domestic violence? >> no. i think honestly, there's a lot of aspects of domestic violence that is not well understood generally. people who work in this area understand very well. and look, i don't judge fans at all. there's something that the nfl does really well, and that's football. great athletes playing to win. >> plain marketing, too. >> that's what the fans want to see. that's understandable. that's why my organization has consistently said, you know, the nfl does not have just a ray rice problem. they have a larger violence
8:09 am
against women problem. it's not the fans' problem. it's not of the fan's making. they're not responsible for making it right. roger good zeal needs to step aside so the nfl can have top leadership that get it is that understands the systemic nature of the progress that the nfl has created for itself that 0 points. we a new leader to appoint a truly independent investigator with a much broader scope of charge to do a top to bottom investigation of what is going on with violence against women within the nfl. and why. and how does the nfl get back on the right track? >> let's talk about that. this is a statement or at least part of the statement you issued wednesday calling for goodell's resignation. quote, the nfl has lost its way. it doesn't have a ray rice problem. that has a violence against women problem. what makes you think that if roger goodell weren't running the nfl, let's say it's
8:10 am
condoleezza rice or, you know, one of the other 16 or 17 folks whose names have been tossed out this week. what makes you think that the domestic violence problem in the nfl is going to be any better under different leadership? >> there's no guarantee. you're absolutely right. that's why we have said that roger goodell's successor must appoint a truly independent investigators to find out. we have a lot of questions, we have tried to scratch the surface a little bit to see what might be going on. maybe they don't have enough women in executive leadership. i think the you continue get it factor seems to be huge around the issue of domestic violence. neighb maybe they don't have enough women in the nfl. or maybe they the way they treat the female employees especially the cheerleaders and how it's different than the way they treat the male athletes. we have questions. an investigators needs to go in and make the recommendations.
8:11 am
>> you don't buy the independence of the investigator? is that what i'm hearing you don't think bob ploomueller? >> not at all. we think it's window dress. it's roger goodell doing the smallest littlest bit he can do to try to look good and make the issue go away. that's what he's done repeatedly with instances with domestic violence throughout his entire tenure. that is why he is not credible. >> there was domestic violence problem in the nfl before roger goodell took the helm? >> absolutely. i'm not claiming he created it. i believe he would like and much prefer that domestic violence not be an issue in the nfl. and so it's not of his making. it's maybe not his fault. i'm saying he's not the right leader for the nfl at this time. he has demonstrated he can't handle it. >> this is roger goodell earlier
8:12 am
this week in the interview talking abo talking about and very ominous about this. this is what the commissioner had to say. >> we didn't know it was on the table. we have been very open and honest. i have also from two weeks ago when i acknowledged that we didn't get this right. that's my responsibility and i'm accountable for that. >> is that a apology or acknowledgment is that not sufficient? >> absolutely it's not sufficient. i say it's to his credit he say he didn't get it right. it's right he reach out to end domestic violence for some advice around a appropriate policy. again, he seems to be -- he seems to really think that what this is a big image problem for him. and that is a fundamental misunderstanding behalf is going on. >> national organization for women, terri, thank you.

nonplussed remark. i don't think genuinely they expect the president or any of his administration to pick up the phone and actually call, but the interesting thing is we have had the broad strategy, if you like, from the president that he wants to degrade and ultimately destroy isis. we've had the rhetoric, if you like. now we need get into the details. part of the detail will be how american war planes enter syrian air space without the syrian air force engaging. there will have to be some kind of coordination involved. it's an uncomfortable, not alliance but arrangement the united states finds itself in in that the most enthusiastic arab country in the fight against isis is possibly syria leaving aside iraq, because the coalition you've described, the john kerry tried to get together yesterday saudi arabia could
8:20 am
almost described as the coalition as the unwilling. and egypt is almost being dragged into this. saudi arabia is also a reluctant ally. now we get into the detail, for example, also with the moderate so-called moderate rebels. who are these people who will be the ground troops once u.s. war planes begin to bomb? some of them are not very moderate and the fsa has been certainly criticized in the past as being not very effective. after the reality, after the rhetoric of president obama's address comes the reality. one final thing. it's a volatile and complex situation. you can see behind me black smoke rising. right now bombing rebel positions. they're not isis positions. this is another theater in this very complex war. >> bill neely in damascus. thank you. i appreciate your time. i want to bring in democratic congresswoman loretta sanchez of california, member of

the house armed services and homeland security committees. let's start with what john boehner said about president obama's plan to defeat isis. this is what he said. take a listen. there were still questions and concerns that remain. for example, i sport the president's plan to train and i quip iraqi security forces in the syrian opposition. but i remain concerned that those measures could take years to fully implement at time when isil's momentum and territorial gains must be reversed immediately. >> what is your reaction to that? >> well, i believe that speaker boehner has some concern and it may be correct. we have been training troops now in iraq for a long time, and they didn't hold up to the isis threat. so how much longer will it take? will we get them back? will we get the leadership?
8:22 am
the troops who didn't have leadership? was it the troops going to the other side? so thing are concerns, and they're valid concerns with respect to the iraqi army. >> on the president's plan to sport the syrian rebels. i want to play what your fellow democrat, senator joe manchin of west virginia had to say. >> i have deep concern about us investing taxpayer dollars to a group of rebels. i'm not sure how to use to our benefit. if it's going to be used against us at some time. >> beyond that, we use the term syrian rebels. the fact of the matter is they fight alongside most of the extreme groups in the region right now. these idea the rebels will help us save the day. it seems a bit farfetched, no? >> well, this is the exact problem we have about year ago, remember last august when there was this whole issue of whether we would arm the rebels in syria or not. and the fact of the matter is we
8:23 am
have not addressed the issue. we still don't understand who truly are the moderates, which ones are isis. which are in can hoots with isis. it's very difficult to get what the president has outlined. let me be clear, one of the reasons that we were hit on 9/11 was there was space, there was space in afghanistan for of islam to train. so if we allow a space to happen as these isis people want between sir why and part of iraq we run the same risk. >> do you not contend -- do you not agree there will be the space that exists? yes. but these people are coming together, have come together, and directly decided that we are the enemy in their speech, in
8:24 am
the way they beheaded some of our people. if we see they are a threat and in fact the president has decided that, by the way, most of the congress has also. then we have to -- >> most of the congress also thought it was a good idea to invade iraq as well. i don't know if that should necessarily -- >> i did not vote for that as you know. i'm just saying this is an issue. this is a clear issue of what to we do about them. now how we do that and what plan we have is left to discussion. the president has the ultimate ability to decide what to do. but i believe that the question that my colleagues are asking are very legitimate and we need to figure out some answers. >> let's say we do destroy isis five to ten years from now. is there not another group that rears its ugly head. >> i'm glad you asked the question. it's not just about eliminating isis. again, that void, that space that it opens up that's why it's

we knew what they were going to be. we heard the judge's reasoning yesterday. that's why pistorius stood up and seemed impassive. it was only when court adjourned when he turned to his sister and gave her a hug. it was a different story on the other side where the steenkamps where people were shaking their heads, some of reeva's friends were crying and june steenkamp, the mother of reeva, hugging supporters for a long time. shortly after that they left the courthouse and nbc news sat down for an exclusive interview with john and barry steenkamp my colleague asked them. >> i don't care what happens to oscar. it's not going to change anything. my daughter is never coming back. he's still leaving and breathing and she's gone forever. >> they said they weren't ready to talk to oscar pistorius.
