9:00 am
and breaking news this hour, the vikings announce adrian peterson will be back on the field this sunday. she's back. >> hello, iowa!
9:01 am
i'm back! >> turning to iowa for the first time since her third finish since 2008. is the hawk eye state ready for hillary this time around? >> does it feel good to be back? >> it's great. couldn't have been better. >> good day. i'm andrea mitchell in new york back from iowa. secretary of state kerry is in paris and persuaded some arab states to join air strikes against isis in iraq, but in a meeting of 30 countries it is unclear what will be provided to baghdad and by whom. a key question is the role of turkey. we find richard engle from istanbul. this has not been easy getting
9:02 am
this coalition together. it's not clear what each member is going to do, but there seems to be growing concern that it has to be taken seriously after another beheading this time of a british citizen. >> i think andrea as this plays out, we will find out this was the easy part. it is very easy for countries to get together to say that they want to do something about isis and pledge support to make deals behind closed doors. we haven't seen any arab country plainly say we are taking part from our bases. they are going to have saudi and iraqi or egyptian pilots this this is the strategy. we hear mostly from diplomatic sources who are unnamed talking about how strong the partnership is. this i think is still going to be the easy part. the hard part is when you have to do the fighting and figure
9:03 am
out who is going to take the ground and the role of iran and syria. if you look at the third countries you mentioned in paris, they are discussing the future of iraq and syria really. am isis spans both sides of the border. syria is not there. iran is not there. both of these countries have an enormous amount of influence, syria having the most in its own country. to be planning the future of these actions without talking to key players seems like it's -- are really talking to yourself. >> it's fairly obvious why the united states does not want to deal with assad. for three years we were saying that. >> but they are living in -- exactly. they are living in a delusion. they are saying assad must go. we can't talk to assad because
9:04 am
it's a bad regime. it killed 200,000 people. if the air strikes happen, assad is going to benefit. assad's forces and iran forces who are going to move in and take that territory. we can say assad is so awful that we can't have him at a same conference, but we can carry out air strikes and allow him to reconquer his country? that's a contradiction. one of many that will emerge the deeper they dig in. >> richard engle, thanks so much. >> i am joined by the spokesperson with secretary kerry. thanks for taking the time. >> great to be with you. >> to that question, we are helping assad if we defeat isis and we don't want to be in alliance with him, but the fact is we are. >> first of all, i sul poses i
9:05 am
threat not from syria or iraq, but the region and left unchecked to the people of the united states and the president and the secretary have a responsibility and obligation and a commitment to do everything they can to protect american interests. it doesn't mean we are still taking steps. one of the big pushes is going to be a training program that we try to push through next week to fund the opposition to fight i sul and equip them with what they need. we have a responsibility. this is too big not to take on. >> even that threat and the train and equip program, they briefed us before the president's speech and said very specifically that saudi arabia agreed to host the training on a base in saudi arabia. the saudis ran away from that. i don't want to put you on the spot necessarily diplomatically and you may not be able to say this, but it seemed clear the
9:06 am
inference is the saudis are going to do it, but not acknowledge it? . >> these train and equip programs are work programs and have been sitting in the meetings with the secretary and the saudis have been not only hosting the meetings, but forward leaning in what role they are open and willing to play. we are not going to announce things for them, but they and many other countries inside and outside are willing to take steps to play important roles in the coalition. >> janet said it will initiate reconnaissance over iraq. what about air strikes. which of the coalition members are committing to do the air strikes. >> it's important for people to understand that one, we will have the capability and contributions militarily and we need to succeed here. we are not asking every country to make military contributions and we don't need them to and want them to. i will point people to that and
9:07 am
they lead them to answer questions on what they are willing or not to do. we will have the air strike capability and capacity we need. it's important for people to tharm we are in the phase where we need to determine what roles are appropriate. this will be done in cooperation and coordination with the iraqis and certainly with our military. that's a discussion that needs to be had before we are announcing or rolling out or any country rolling out what they will play. >> and then turkey hasn't closed its borders and hasn't stopped fighters in syria and hasn't stopped the oil flow. isis is making money off of selling oil that it gets and turkey is part of that. >> one of the things the secretary said is it's important to move forward. i think turkey recognizes most countries have not put as much as turkey has given diplomats
9:08 am
being held. they have sensitivities. we understand and respect that. we want to have a conversation them. they have been participating because they are an important player and have an important role to play. they have taken steps to crack down on fighters over the border. obviously there is more that needs to be done. this is a conversation we are having. they too recognized the threat they pose. >> from paris, thanks so much and look forward to seeing you tomorrow. >> my pleasure. >> coming up, hawk eye homecoming returning for the 50 time in more than six years. can hillary clinton be iowa's come back kid? the annual steak fry joining me next. the latest on the strongest hurricane ever to hit mexico's baja peninsula. the hurricane slammed the coast with heavy surf and 125 mile winds, forcing vacationers to

9:10 am
don't take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. while taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. those three important reasons are why eliquis is a better find for me. ask your doctor today if eliquis is right for you. i have $40,ney do you have in your pocket right now? $21. could something that small make an impact on something as big as your retirement? i don't think so. well if you start putting that towards your retirement every week and let it grow over time, for twenty to thirty years, that retirement challenge might not seem so big after all. ♪

when bill clinton was running for president in 1992, a lot of you remember he was dubbed the come back kid. i have a new phrase. president clinton and hillary clinton are the come back couple in america. >> torque hark in welcoming hillary clinton who did nothing to tamp down speculation she is planning a run for the white house. >> hello iowa!

did hillary connect with the iowa democrats? >> thanks for coming out, andrea. a beautiful day as you know. over 10,000 people. i just thought that the crowd loved hillary and bill. she set the right tone for the day and her basic reason for being here was to help fire up democrats for the 2014 e dekz and she did that. >> she was also there to pay tribute to you as were so many. as you say, 10,000 now. you thought it was a great crowd and they loved you and your partner who has been a political presence there. a lot of young folks, millennials are not sure where hillary clinton stands on big issues for them. on war and peace, they think she is too tight with wall street
9:16 am
and not sure she really represents with bernie sanders or elizabeth warren. is she too conservative for iowa democrats? >> not at all. a lot is to be developed yet. there is a myth that iowans didn't like hillary. iowans love her. what happened back in 2008, we had a phenomenon by the name of barack obama who came out early and got the organization and all these young people out and that was sort of the end of it. i don't think it lacked support or affection for hillary clinton. for the last four or five years she was secretary of state and has not been able to do things politically. it's interesting that her first fore back into politics was in iowa. you will see a lot of support

for hillary clinton. >> you will not preempt any decisions. she said she has not made a decision and her has said that. she was giving off all the vibes of being a candidate in waiting. >> look, i don't think what her final decision will be. i know it's weighing heavily on her mind. just think about it. she has done so much in her life. i know they are looking forward to being grandparents. ruth and i had our grand kids here yesterday. we talked about her anticipation of being grandparents. to run for president is a big decision and it's weighing heavily on her mind and bill's as a family. i don't envy her having to make that decision. i say if she decides to run for president, i can tell you she is

going to have a lot of support here in iowa. >> senator, you have been friend friends with the clintons for a long time and i was out there back in 1992 when bill clinton came for all of these years since. you were with barack obama last time. if hillary clinton does run, is she going to be your candidate. >> say that again? >> if hillary clinton does run, was she your democrat. she wasn't last time. >> i still didn't understand. >> if she runs for president, are you going to endorse her? you didn't last time and you chose barack obama. >> the most important thing i have to say is this and i talked to hillary and bill about this. she is focused on winning the 2014 elections. she is focused on keeping control of the united states senate and electing democrats.
9:19 am
she will be doing that between now and election day. after that will be plenty of time for her to decide if she wants to run or not. i don't feel it's proper to force her to do something. let her make up her mind and make the decision and after that we will see what happens. >> okay. senator tom hark in. sorry for the audio problems out there. it's great to see you. what a career. i know this is not the end, just a different passage. we will talk in the coming months and years. >> thanks, so much, andrea. >> major new developments from the nfl. peterson will be back on the field this sunday. a new message from the commissioner to team owners. all these details are next. no hidden fees, from the bank where no branches equals great rates.
