believe they are close to finding suspected cop kill eric frein. one picture shows an ak-47 that investigators believe he was carrying while on the run. another shows ammunition. police say it's just a matter of time until frein is found. >> we're pushing him hard. he's no longer safe and i'm confident that he will be apprehended. >> frein is accused of ambushing two state troopers more than a week ago. new this morning a possible clue in finding a missing uva student is made public. >> in fact, i believe that jesse matthew was the last person she was seen with before she vanished off the face of the earth. >> matthew is now a person of interest in hannah graham's disappearance. there's now an arrest warrant for him. graham vanished september 13th by a mall. security cameras caught her last

moments. her father made this plea. >> did you see hannah? who saw hannah. somebody did. >> this weekend more than 1,200 volunteers combed charlottesville for clues. a man accused of sneaking in to the white house with a knife is expected to face a judge this morning. omar gonzalez an iraq war veteran was arrested on friday after scaling a fence and making it inside. right now he's behind bars. he could face ten years in prison. the secret service is coming under fire following the stunt. officials are considering screening tourists at checkpoint as few blocks away from the white house. they have stepped up patrols and increased surveillance. this week could prove to be pivotal in the fight against isis. president obama will be meeting with united nations security council leaders in an effort to turn talk into action. the u.s. is seeking a new resolution demanding countries tighten laws on those who travel

abroad to join terrorist organizations. tracie potts joins us this morning. >> reporter: frances expect a lot the president will spend a lot of time this week in the u.n. starting with meetings tomorrow. wednesday this big push to get other countries to back the u.s. in this fight against isis. president obama stands before the united nations wednesday. he's expected to address everything from ebola to the fight against the islamic state. >> i agree with president obama's goal they must be defeated. i'm just not seeing the strategy that it will work. >> reporter: u.n. ambassador samantha power says 40 nations are backing the u.s. against isis and if the president goes ahead with air strikes in syria. >> we're not having problems getting countries to commit. >> reporter: president obama has been briefed on the military's

plan but hasn't signed off yet. >> they aren't as committed as the united states. >> reporter: the president promised no u.s. ground troops but military experts doubt that's impossible. >> there's frustration on the military side saying please don't limit us. >> reporter: in new york this week president obama's chairing the u.n. security council, pushing a measure that would impose a global travel ban and freeze assets on groups like isis that bring in fighters from abroad. so, to recap, a busy week. we got tuesday the climate change meetings that's tomorrow. wednesday the president addresses the general assembly in the morning, in the afternoon he chairs that security council meeting where he'll try to push the u.s. resolution. on thursday he's got meetings with ebola. the white house says he has bilateral meetings with individual countries planned. >> a lot at stake. tracie potts for us in washington, d.c. three afghan soldiers in the u.s. for training are missing.

the trio, a major and two captains were reported missing saturday. they were staying at a military base in cape cod since september 11th. the men were last seen at a mall in hyannis. the men are not considered dangerous. the exercise they were part of ends wednesday. there's some big news from nasa. >> all i can say at this point is we're in orbit at mars, guys. >> sounds cool to say. the maven spacecraft arrived at the red planet on sunday. its journey started almost a year ago. its first mission probe the upper atmosphere. find out why mars went from warm to wet to cold and dry. pope francis has a message for isis. during a speech the pope blasted extremists who use religion to justify their evil saying, let

some flash flooding over the weekend. a lot of rural sections of mexico and areas of west texas have been dealing with heavy rain, potentially one to two inches. still a threat for some flooding today and then that will be over with. as far as the rest of the country goes here's our summer weather pattern. it was relatively cool in the great lakes. no high humidity. now that fall starting we're doing a pattern shift. we're watching the cooler weather shift to the west coast and as we go through this upcoming weekend, first weekend of fall it will be warm. we're going to watch temperatures in the 80s throughout many areas of the upper plains into the end of this week and weekend. today looks like a beautiful day in the great lakes. no problems in the east. humidity levels have dropped significantly as the cold front went through last night and even tuesday. weather along the gulf that's where we could see showers and thunderstorms. it's looking like a very warm end to september. boston, by the way, they are looking at one of their driest

>> fear of isis, thousands of refugees are pouring out of syria. 100,000 people mostly kurds have flood turkey. a rutgers university student is dead and it could be alcohol-related. 19-year-old caitlyn kovacs was at a fraternity gathering. at 3:00 a.m. sunday morning prosecutors say friends noticed she was in distress. they brought her to the hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later. a 24-year-old will likely need surgery after a shark took a bite out of his foot. it happened yesterday. they treated him right there on the shore before he went to the hospital. later on, he described what happened. >> i looked down, and next thing i know, i'm getting pulled by a shark. and it was just kind of dragging me around. and i got free from him. paddled in and came over here to the hospital. and it is being called the largest march ever on global warming. some 300,000 people jammed the streets of new york yesterday to

time now for your monday morning helping of scrambled politics. was it too soon? in defense of an and the abortion law rick perry invoked the death of joan rivers. in august a judge blocked a key provision that required abortion clinics to meet hospital standards. he was asked about it and drew a buzz from the crowd. >> when joan rivers and the procedure she had done where she died that was a clinic. and it's a curious thought that if they had that type of regulations in place whether or not that individual would still be alive. >> former president bill clinton may have dropped a hint on his daughter's due date. in an interview he talked about how excited he was for his first grandchild. >> yeah. i can't wait. and we're on watch now.

david, thanks for being with us this morning. good morning. >> hi. >> let's talk about this ahead of the president's speech before the united nations the u.s. ambassador samantha power predicted the united states will not act alone if president obama moves forward with authorizing air strikes in syria against isis because plenty of other countries have made big plans combat these insurgents as well. how successful can a coalition be especially with no initiative from any nation to commit any boots on the ground. >> for president obama he's made clear his strategy is use his proxy forces, local forces on the ground after the u.s. air power can sort of make some damage to ti isis defenses. i think there's two different questions. in iraq you have the iraqi forces that the u.s. has spent a long time training and kurdish forces that had success in the past. the biggest question is in syria. it's not clear these moderate syrian rebels that the u.s. is going to try to train and equip,

some of the training being in saudi arabia, if they will be able to be successful or that the u.s. can rely on these fors. that's the big question not only for the united states but the other partners. >> sure especially with that training leading upwards of a year. some saying technically there's got to be boots on the ground already now given what you just saw. is that semantic? >> no. the u.s. has put 1600 u.s. troops there sort of in defense, in intelligence positions and generals are saying if things do not go well maybe they will move them farther up into the front lines maybe not in a combat role but assisting role. the question is whether that will continue to devolve into u.s. maybe sending more troops in the future. >> the hypothetical or inevitable what happens if a plane is shot down. let's talk about the white house security breach, secret service under fire stepped up patrol. i want to know what the talk is amongst you guys. washington insiders about how

this happened twice within 24 hours especially with that guy getting as far as he did with a knife. what's the talk amongst you guys? >> it's really shocking. the secret service says over and over they have protocols in place to stop this kind of thing. if you walk around the white house grounds we have limited access but security is in full combat gear doing patrol. people on the roof, spotters with sharpshooters. this is shocking breach of security for somebody to get all the way there and turned out he did have a smaller pocketknife with him. i think the secret service has talked about stepping up patrols. they may take such actions as screening people outside the gates or moving them further away which is a big change to the way they've done it in the past. >> all right. thank you so much. have a good week. >> still to come a death defying adrenaline junky challenged and
