we're getting it worked out. hi, everybody. i'll thomas roberts. it's wednesday, september 24th. welcome to "way too early." the show got gopro camera for wearable use. i can use that when i almost fell off the step. that would have been good tv. i didn't fall. and that's a good thing. we can get ready to go with the a-block. we're going to begin in new york. in a few hours, president obama will try to rally more international support for his plans to defeat islamic state militants. it was overnight the u.s. continued to pound i.s.i.s. targets in syria, for a second day in a row. as well as in iraq. and military officials tell nbc news, the air strikes are considered targets of opportunity. 100 missiles and bombs have been launch. they are successful.
2:31 am
but are warning they could last for years. these are some of the first pictures on the ground in syria, after the air strikes. and residents say this town was hit by four rockets in the first day of the raids. and the u.s. has stressed there was an international coalition. a top official with the joint chiefs of staff says the u.s. has carried out most of the strikes. the obama administration says the air strikes are legal, under the iraq war authorization act of 2002. president obama is praising the five arab allies and promising that the countries will not let up on i.s.i.s. >> america is proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with these nations, on behalf of our common security. the strength of this coalition makes it clear to the world this is not america's fight alone. the overall effort will take time. there will be challenges ahead. we're going to do what's necessary to take the fight to

this terrorist group. for the security of the country and the region, and for the entire world. >> we're learning new details about the al qaeda-linked group that was targeted in the air strikes. the group known as the khorasan, in the final stages of plans to attack the u.s. or other western targets. that's a new name you haven't heard of before. but one that you will be hearing about. in the wake of the air strikes, the department of homeland security, and fbi, alerted local law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for possible attacks at the u.s. while there's no direct information of a specific plot. officials like new york's police commissioner, bill bratton, is take the threat seriously. here's justice correspondent, pete williams. >> reporter: it's a threat the u.s. has been watching for weeks. a powerful explosive, hidden in an electronic device, carried on a passenger plane and set off in flight. intelligence indicated the khorasan terror group was
2:33 am
setting off bombs in syria to test design. >> some of that plotting was getting advanced. as we developed the information, as we understood where they were and could pinpoint them, we thought it was time to take action. >> officials do not believe a specific airline, flight, time or country had been chosen. recent chatter discussed trying to put explosives in toothpaste or clothes. but electronics has been the big concern. since july, passengers flying to the u.s. has have had to demonstrate that laptops would power up. i.s.i.s. is proving it can project its influence to other countries. police in australia said they stopped an i.s.i.s.-directed plot to behead people there. and now, i.s.i.s.-inspired group claims to have a french citizen in algeria. threatening to execute him. new york's police commissioner, william bratton, says he worries that i.s.i.s. could inspire people here to do something
2:34 am
equally horrific. >> those involved in new york city and the nypd, believe this period of time is the most significant, dangerous periods we've seen. since 9/11, 13 years ago. >> reporter: the use of social media and the internet by i.s.i.s., is a huge concern. >> their ability to get recruits is unparalleled. and that means they have the ain't to inspire others in the u.s. and europe, to take matters into anywhere own hands. >> that was pete williams reporting. ahead of today's general assembly address, i was invited to an event last night hosted by president obama and the first lady. i found it to be pensive and deliberate as he spoke to the crowd of leader there's and other people who had come from different delegations about the world working together. a lot of people pulled out their camera phones to chronicle some of the remarks. this is a small portion i captured for you. >> there's going to be times

where, a feeling of despair. but i hope that during the course of this week, and every day going forward, that we're constantly reminded that there's no problem, that man faces, that is not within our ability to solve, so long as we work together. and so long as we reach for what president lincoln called the better angels of our nature. >> we will be watching as the president addresses the u.n. assembly. the secret service is stepping up security at the white house, after a man was able to hop the fence and enter the family's residence. tourists will find a second fence that's being called a buffer zone. the fence is about three feet high. and it uses plastic ties to connect sections. it's going to remain up, as the secret service reviews current procedures. new details are emerging
2:36 am
about what the secret service knew about omar gonzales before his alleged security breach last week. the agency interviewed him in july for reckless driving. 11 guns and a map with a circle around the white house were found in his car. agents spoke with gonzales after he was found walking near the white house last month, with a hatchet in his waistband. and both times, agents said there was no legal basis so detain him. climbed change is take center stage at the united nations general assembly, as it gets under way. and speaking at the summit, president obama urged countries around the world, to do more. he said the u.s. and china, the world's top two economies and polluters, must lead. but no country is exempt from this. >> there's one issue that will define the contours of this century more dramatically than any other. that is the urgent and growing threat of a changing climate. we will do our part. and we'll help developing nations do theirs.
2:37 am
but we can only succeed and combat climate change if we are joined in this effort by every nation. developed and developing, alike. nobody gets a pass. wikileaks source, chelsea manning, is suing the u.s. military to get treatment for her disorder. according to the lawsuit, she was diagnosed with gender d dismore fya. the lawsuit filed by the american civil liberties union, claims manning is in hormone therapy, the right to female grooming standards and access to a doctor qualified to treat her condition. we focus our attention to business. and the big three sodamakers take a big leap forward in the fight on obesity.

and cadillac moving to the big apple. they've been struggling, despite the struggle in overall luxury sales. they think this move from detroit to the big apple could be a big help. >> it's an interesting one this. executives often sit around and ponder in expensive meetings, how they get the mojo back in the brand. i think caddie would admit in a the brand is a little stodgy and has lost the mystique. part of the aim of trying to restore this, it's about moving the headquarters to the sojo district of new york. that way, they hope, they make the brand look a lilt more trendy. and with good reason. they need to do something here. luxury sales of these vehicles peaked in 1997. and over the years, so far, they've sold half as many as the germans' mercedes-benz. in august, luxury car sales were up 14%.
2:39 am
caddie sales fell 5%. there's problems here. i want to move you on to another story. >> it's amazing to think they can make more money by coming out of financially struggling detroit, where there would be taxes than to stay put. and come to a booming new york and take real estate in sojo. that's amazing to me p. >> it's a head-scratcher. in business, you to take a chance. and you have to make an investment to try to get a return. i guess this is what the executives at gm think. and there is a brand issue here, i think. if you are a luxury product and you're in a stable of other gm products, pitched towards the mid and lower market, it's difficult to get your audience to differentiate. if you look at the germans, bmw and mercedes-benz. i don't think anybody has any doubt what those brands stand for. it's upscale. it's aspirational. you have the caddie on the lot
2:40 am
and it sat there with a number o of other gm brands, sometimes it doesn't look its best under the sun. >> yeah. it's going to be amazing to see about this. and, geoff, about the soda industry, taking on calorie consumption. or giving perception as reality, they want to try to combat obesity issues. >> i'm a little cynical. and i guess other people are. if you electric at a can of soda, 12 ounce can, 150 calories. the initiative, the print industry saying we're going to take this an and encourage people to take on less calories. how are you going to do that? they've not talked about reducing the calories in that can. they talked about reducing the can size. and also, encouraging people to look at buying water, which they also sell. so, there's a lot of marketing spin in this. >> yes. >> everybody needs to take
2:41 am
individual responsibility, of course. when it comes to these things. but you also want to see business step up, as well. questions will be asked, as to whether this is the big initiative that we need to see here. back to you. >> can size would help with the calorie count. a little teeny can of that soda. geoff, thank you, sir. there's new evidence of how polarized the u.s. electorate has become. political prejudice is greater than race i. bloomberg reporting that they asked people to look at resumes and say which one should be awarded scholarships. blacks chose members of their own race 73% of the time. when it came to politics, democrats chose members of her own party. republicans chose other republicans at 69%. and researchers found people are more trusting of those who share their party affiliation. this polarization extends beyond the ballot box. this brings us to our twitter
