2:30 am
this is "way too early." hey, everybody. good morning. i'm thomas roberts. it's monday, september the 29th, welcome to "way too early," the show that feels like that tackled fan every monday morning when our alarm goes off twice because we set two alarms. because we're just that concerned about missing the first one. we hope you had a great weekend. and fall is upon us. the fall weather feels so good in new york. we love it. we want to get straight to it. we begin with new information about the air strikes against isis in syria and iraq. while the president is speaking out about the strength of the terrorist group. it was over the weekend the u.s.-led coalition bombed several oil fields controlled by it's assess. while strategically targeting the extremist militants along the syria/turkey border coming to the aid of syrian kurds. president obama spoke to "60 minutes" about how the islamic state became so powerful. look at this.
2:31 am
>> how did they end up where they are, in control of so much territory? was that a complete surprise to you? >> well, i think our head of the intelligence community, jim clapper, has acknowledged that i think they underestimated what had been taking place in syria. >> he didn't say -- just say that, we underestimated isil. he said, we overestimated the ability and the will of our allies, the iraqi army, to fight. >> that's true. that's absolutely true. >> well, now those same iraqi troops who dropped their weapons and ran from isis are being recruited back to their ranks. the "new york times" reports as many as 6,000 iraqis have reenlisted thanks to a new military campaign to rebuild the army there. however, there are still those who doubt the president's strategy, specifically in syria. >> if the goal is to destroy isis, as the president says it
2:32 am
is, i don't believe the strategy that he outlined will accomplish that. >> why not? >> the end of the day i think it's going to take more than air strikes to drive them out of there. at some point, somebody's boots have to be on the ground. maybe we can get enough of these forces trained to get them on the battlefield. but somebody's boots have to be there. >> if no one else will step up, you would recommend putting american boots on the ground? >> we have no choice. these are barbarians. they intend to kill us. if we don't destroy them first, we're going to pay the price. >> a new nbc news poll finds 72% of americans believe the u.s. will eventually send ground troops to the region to fight isis. 20% think that it won't. after a series of security lapses, the latest reversing a fence jumper who made it inside the white house, we're now learning how the secret service may have dropped the ball investigating gag a 2011 incident in which shots were fired at the second floor residence. "the washington post" reports it took the agency four days to

realize the white house had actually been hit. reports say officers who rushed to respond were ordered to stand down by a supervise history thought the noise came from a construction vehicle that had backfired. not until a housekeeper noticed broken glass and chunks of cement days later did officials realize what actually happened. "the washington post" reports officers who were sure bullets had struck the white house were ignored and some feared speaking up. the president, first lady, and older daughter malia were not home at the time but the daughter sasha was inside. the gunman was arrested in pennsylvania five days after that incident, now serving 25 years in prison. as protests continue in ferguson, missouri, officials are searching for the gunman who shot two area police officers in separate incidents over the weekend. now, the first incident we have one officer shot in the arm near the ferguson community center on saturday night. then, early sunday, an off-duty st. louis police officer was shot. those injuries are also considered to be nonlife

2:35 am
stier who is a california billionaire extreme environmentalist. so remember, please, that you are running against me. not against any of these other groups. you're running against me. >> i realize that. and senator -- president obama's name is not on the ballot. and i'm not going to owe president obama anything on election day. you're going to owe the koch brothers everything. >> we turn attention to louisiana now. democratic senator mary landrieu's re-election race in a very crowd field, ahead of her leading challenger republican congressman bill cassidy, by 3 points, 43-40. within the poll's margin of error there. but in louisiana, candidates must reach 50% of the vote to win. if matched in a runoff likely voters choose cassidy over landrieu 50-47, again within that margin of error. one to watch. north carolina, democratic senator kay hagan's re-election battle, hagan leads her republican challenger, state representative tom tillis, 4

2:37 am
result of the things that are taking place in hong kong, specifically the protests? >> yeah, the early futures here are weak. it has to be said. and we've got a difficult market environment here in europe this morning. and i think a lot of it has to do with the hangover from last week's weak session. but we've also got this issue at the hong kong protests which is causing some jitters here. and the hang seng index, the hong kong market for stocks, closed down nearly 2% at the end of the session. effectively, you've got tens of thousands of protesters who have taken to the streets. they dislike the outcome of a study into how the next chief executive should be selected in hong kong. they hoped for full democracy but what they've got instead is something that looks like selection by beijing-appointed politicia politicians. so they're not happy about that, and they've taken to the streets
2:38 am
to demonstrate. as i say, this is causing some jitters here. i want to just move on. that's a story to keep your eye on. this is also interesting. who is going to help recapitalize those banks post the financial crisis? i think we know the answer. if you look at the checking fees, the overdraft fees, and the fees for using atms of banks that you're not affiliated to, all of those fees have gone up. and we've seen a 5% spike recently in the atm charges. and i cannot believe this. $4.35 is the average fee here now. >> rip-off. >> if you are using an atm that is not affiliated to your bank. for the overdraft, can you believe this? $32.74. so the banks are doing really well here from people who are struggling to meet their weekly funding requirements. so that's how the banks are making out. >> super rip-offs, especially that bank fee for going to an
2:39 am
atm that's more convenient, over four bucks, amazing. explain about facebook. we understand they're rolling out this new ad platform today. and it has some people concerned about their privacy and how it's going to interfere with that. >> yeah, i think there's nothing new in this. if you're not aware of the privacy issues here, you need to wake up a little bit. because we know who you are. we know where you live. we know what you do. this is largely the story that we're getting from facebook here. they are launching a new ad platform called atlas. but the point of this is, it will be able to track you across different devices and different locations. and they're gathering intelligence on you all the time. so if a marketeer turns up, a company like pepsi co, they say, what we want is 18-year-old males who like a particular kind of drink, how do we reach these people? facebook will have that information through atlas.
2:40 am
and they can target the advertising more specifically towards that group of individuals. and on the one hand you can say, okay, that's great, that's efficient, that's more effective use of advertising spend, and it means i'm only going to see adverts that are applicable to me and the things i'm interested in. but the other side of the coin is, do you want all this data about your activities being held by an organization like facebook? the question's out there. >> it's the catch-22 to all of it. jeff, thanks so much, appreciate it. our twitter question for you, are you willing to sacrifice that privacy to get the ads and information on products that you might be interested in? things that are going to spark your eye, that facebook thinks are targeted just for you? tweet us your creative answers #waytooearly, the best ones coming up later. there's going to be a fight between jen litman and john tower over who's going to read the tweets, a flip coin toss. tweet us that, who do you think
