and a thriller as the major league playoffs get under way. good wednesday morning, everyone, i'm angie goff. it is here. the first confirmed ebola diagnosis in the u.s. a man is critically ill at a dallas hospital after visiting liberia. and now the scramble to figure out if he infected others. nbc's jay gray is in dallas for us this morning. >> reporter: this morning the first patient diagnosed in the u.s. with the deadly ebola virus continues to receive treatment from a team of experts inside this dallas hospital. >> our staff is trained and prepared to take care of patients with a variety of infectious diseases including ebola virus disease. >> reporter: they will have help from the centers for disease control. a medical team has been rushed to texas to assist in the treatment and track down and monitor the handful of people the patient had had contact with after flying from west africa on september 19th to visit his family in dallas. >> the bottom line here is that

i have no doubt that we will control this importation or this case of ebola so that it does not spread widely in this country. >> reporter: ebola is not an airborne virus. instead it's transmitted by direct contact with blood or other bodily fluids from someone infected and already exhibiting symptoms of the disease. more than 6500 people have been diagnosed with ebola in africa. more than 3,000 there have died. >> it's a severe disease which has a high case fatality rate even with the best of care. but there are core tried-and-try public health interventions that stop it. >> reporter: a procedure that for the first time has been used on an ebola patient diagnosed on american soil. doctors here will not discuss their treatment protocol including any experimental drugs that the patient may receive during his stay here. that is the latest live in

dallas. i'm jay gray. angie, back to you. >> jay, thanks. accused white house fence jumper omar gonzalez will face a judge later today. now, at a previous hearing the judge ruled that he'd be held without bail, but that could be revisited. meanwhile, the secret service is under fire. the agency's director was questioned by lawmakers yesterday. at the same time, a new report says the secret service allowed an armed security contractor who had a criminal record into an elevator with the president on a recent trip to atlanta. nbc's tracie potts is live from washington. and tracie, there on the hill, lawmakers, they don't seem the least bit satisfied with that hearing. are we going to see more backlash today? >> reporter: well, we certainly could, angie. good morning, everyone. and the interesting thing about that is it's equal. democrats, republicans seem equally outraged about this. and now we're getting new information that three days before the president -- before his family, i should say, experienced that fence jumper, the president himself was at risk.

>> i want to thank dr. freeden and everybody here at the center -- >> reporter: a new "washington post" report said when president was at the cdc in atlanta, a security contractor with a criminal record and a gun was standing right next to him in the elevator and that the man was never screened. >> don't let somebody get close to the president. >> i will make sure that it znlt happen again. >> reporter: this comes after a new report that the white house fence jumper was stopped by an off-duty officer who just happened to be nearby. director julia pierson admits agents did not follow protocol. >> i don't sense from you, director pierson, a sense of outrage about that. >> i wish to god you -- you protected the white house like you're protecting your reputation here today. >> reporter: omar gonzalez is in court today facing three counts for jumping the fence and making it all the way into the east room of the white house. initially the secret service said he was stopped just inside the door. >> were you lying to the american people, or were you misled by your own agents about where the intruder was tackled?

secret service was not doing. you know, people in washington wonder just why isn't the fence higher around the white house? so i do think the president is safe because in the end, nothing happened. but on the other hand, you can't underestimate the seriousness of these breaches. >> yeah, and lynn, when you mentioned that hearing, i want to touch on that because julia pierson who we just saw right there, julia pierson is in charge of the secret service. and you know, she's catching a lot of heat this morning because lawmakers didn't appear very satisfied with what she said. she didn't really answer the questions that they were asking her. a lot of them were yes or no, and it seems like she danced around them. is this going to hurt her job? is her job on the line? >> she's new, so perhaps not. but i think her credibility already has taken a beating before the house committee and oversight and government reform. part of what she probably didn't realize is that she needed to show more overt concern than she did. you know, i don't know her.

maybe she's a very cool and collected person, but it was clear that what lawmakers want -- both democrat and republican -- is to show some, i guess, outrage at what happened on her watch. >> yeah. with her saying she's taken responsityway from that hearing saying they just don't believe her. thank you so much, lynn sweet. and just ahead, the uproar over caffeine-infused underwear?
