contact with thomas eric duncan, the first patient diagnosed on u.s. soil. an alert from united airlines to people on his flight, this after reports that he fell in after helping a sick liberian woman. a patient in hawaii put in isolation over possible ebola concerns. here is nbc's jay gray. >> reporter: still in it's lags inside this dallas hospital, thomas eric duncan, the first patient diagnosed with ebola in the united states continues to fight for his life. >> we're categorizing his condition as serious but stable. >> reporter: he showed no symptoms when he left west africa on september 19, days later he was sick and made his first visit to texas presbyterian hospital where he told an intake nurse he just traveled from liberia, an obvious red flag. duncan was sent home with a prescription for antibiotics. >> regretfully that information

was not fully communicated throughout the team. as a result the full import of that information wasn't factored in to the clinical decision making. >> potentially putting even more people at risk. a cdc team on the ground in dallas identified 12 to 18 people who may have made contact with duncan while he was sick, including five school-age children. >> these children have been identified and they are being monitored. >> reporter: for a deadly disease that for the first time is threatening americans at home. jay gray, nbc news, dallas. now to another fast moving illness, this one hitting children across the u.s. reports that a fourth patient struck en with into row virus 68 has died. the 10-year-old had a rare bacterial infection. so far 42 states have reported

cases of enterovooi russ. would i be concerned as a parent? absolutely, but not enough to take them out of the classroom. new shakeups within the secret service this morning following a series of major security breaches. joseph clancy who retired from the agency in 2011 was named interim director following julia pearson's resignation. >> mr. clancy is taking a leave of ab sevens from his private sector job to re-enter government service. that's a demonstration he's making principally because of the loyalty he feels to this organization and this agency that he's served for so long. >> since retiring, clancy has been in charge of security for comcast in philadelphia, msnbc's parent corporation. after a review, the white house will decide if more members of the secret service will be leaving. they are about a month away from wrapping up their

investigation, now a possible setback for the grand jury looking into the police officer who shot and killed 18-year-old michael brown. a spokesperson for the special prosecutor says someone claiming to be friends with one of the jurors allegedly tweeted information out about the case. that twitter user has since shut down her account, but not before an active offist screen grabbed the tweet and sent to it a special prosecutor. the person claimed the juror told her there wasn't enough evidence to arrest officer darren wilson. if there was a breach of confidentiality, they'll have to start all over again with a new grand jury. meanwhile "usa today" is reporting that more than 3,000 people have registered to vote in ferguson in the wake of brown's shooting, signaling their desire for change. like pulling string from a bull of yarn, jesse matthew junior's past continues to unravel. he's accused of abducting hannah

to make their job harder. >> a lot of lawmakers are saying that the replacing of pearson is definitely a step in the right direction. i do want to ask you, bob, what about the others, the ones on the ground. the ones who failed to do their job, the agents involved in all these cases? >> i suspect the new guy is going to come in, the old guy, of course. he's going to come bang and i think he's going to kick butts and take names. i think quite a few people are at least going to be disciplined if not dismissed. however, many people believe that this is a culture problem with the secret service, that what has happened is upper management over quite a period of time has degenerated to a point where nobody is, for instance, able to question any of the orders that are given. that type of thing. that makes the agency less effective. >> bob, i have to ask you, because when you talk about what's happened over time, you've covered the white house for many, many years. have you ever seen something like this when it comes to the president's security? just curious. >> an interesting thing.

tv reporters in particular have a relationship with secret service agents because, the way i would describe it, we trade elbows all the time. there's a constant maneuvering, the agents have their security requirements and the tv people have video requirements. oftentimes you have this shuffling around and you find the agents are usually very, very cooperative and helpful as long as they can make sure they're tarking care of the security requirements. >> bob franken with good insight this morning. it's been a pleasure, thanks. >> what was that angie? >> i said it's been a pleasure, thank you for your insight. >> thank you.
