possible symptoms. who can forget the mighty mites who had a little trouble with the vinyl battle. you'll see them celebrate their shot at redemption, all thanks to jimmy fallon. it's "way too early." good morning, i'm thomas roberts. it's thursday, october 2nd. welcome to wait wait, the show that likes to hoe redemption. the mighty mites lead the way today. that's going to come up in the cooler. we want to begin in washington, d.c. where there's a new leader this morning for the secret service, the embattled director, julia pearson is out after resigning following a string of security breaches. democrats and republicans criticized her performance following a hearing on tuesday on capitol hill. there were mounting calls for her to step down. pearson blamed the media for her

resignation telling bloomberg news in part, quote, i think it's in the best interest of the secret service and the american public if i step down. congress has lost confidence in my ability to run the agency. the media has made it clear that this is what they expected. officials say president obama lost faith after learning he shared an elevator last month at the cdc with an armed man with a criminal record. pearson only told president obama moments before it was actually reported. >> i can tell you that the white house first learned of that incident yesterday afternoon shortly before it was publicry reported by a news organization. >> she did not tell him about that, or the agency did not tell the white house about that. you didn't know about it until yesterday. >> until shortly before it was report publicly. >> over the last several days we've seen recent reports raising questions about the performance of the agency. the president concluded that new leadership of that agency was required. >> let's get to the new leadership. joseph clancy, retired from the

secret service in 2011. he's been named acting director. clancy was the former special agent in charge of the presidential protective division. in may clancy became the executive director of security for comcast which is the apparent of msnbc elijah cummings of maryland was quick to praise clancy. >> i'm very pleased. he's the person the president has the utmost confidence in. believes he would take a bullet for him. i'm very pleased with that selection. the secret service needs to be looked at from the top to bottom. if there are people that need to go and i do believe there are others, they need to go because i want every single person in the secret service dedicated to making it the reputable, elite protective agency in the world. meanwhile omar gonzalez, the man accused of jumping the white house fence with a knife and making it deep inside the white house pleaded not guilty in

are monitoring a second person who had been in close contact with duncan. five children are being kept home from a dallas area school and watched very carefully. yesterday parents of other kids, other students in those districts, they plucked their kids from the school to have them tested. this is all precautionary. meanwhile health officials are scrutinizing the dallas hospital's response to this. duncan tried to get help on september 26, at that time complaining of fever and abdominal pain. his nephew says it wasn't until he called the cdc two days later he was treated appropriately. >> in he's in our prayers, we're really rooting for him. he's going to have a lot of work to do when he gets out, and everybody is praying and rooting for him. i know the whole nation is rooting for him. >> regretfully that information was not fully communicated throughout the full team.

and as a result the full import of that information wasn't factored into the clinical decision making. >> now health officials are tracing just who duncan came in contact with and they have it down to at least ten people. he departed monrovia flying through brussels, belgium and even dulles international airport before then arriving in dallas. there are reports days before he left liberia, he helped an infected pregnant woman, carrying her by the legs to the hospital. she was turned away and later died. strongly worded statements after a face-to-face meeting between president obama and benjamin netanyahu. it was the 12th time the two leaders met and the first since the israel-gaza war. they praised the bond and spoke of the need for peace in the middle east. president obama also focused on plans to defeat isis while the prime minister urged the u.s. to

not let iran develop nuclear wep weapons. hours later the white house condemned israel's plans for a new housing development in east jerusalem, that led to a stern response in an interview with nbc's andrea mitchell. >> you had a meeting with president obama and the whousz and the state department say that the new settlements in east jerusalem undercut your commitment to peace, that it could poison the atmosphere, turn the world against you. what is your response to that when the president says that? >> i think they should be acquainted with the facts. these are not settlements, these are neighborhoods, we have arab neighborhoods and jewish neighborhoods. >> when you walk out of the white house, and two hours later, the press secretary slams israel, talks about poison. how does that make you feel? >> it doesn't make mi me feel good. the important thing is get the

is guilty, he was convicted of attempted murder in the original trial. but jurors deadlocked on the first degree murder charge. dunn maintained he shot into the vehicle in self-defense after he saw a gun, but a weapon was never found. prosecutors also said he continued to shoot even after the teens fled. here is what jordan dave vis's mom had to say testify verdict came down. >> we know that jordan's life and legacy will live on for others, but at the same time we're very saddened by the life that michael dunn will continue to live. >> in florida first degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence. kansas was never supposed to be one of the most watched senate races in the country, but now it is. and it's all because of the independent greg orman and giving the incumbent there, senator pat roberts a real run for his money. a "usa today" suffolk poll shows

welcome back. earlier in the show we talked to you about the change in leadership at the secret service. if you want to sound smart, tell your friends president lincoln established the agency on april 14, 1865. sadly he was assassinated hours after signing the legislation. the timing wouldn't have changed the course of presidential history since the secret service was originally established to combat counterfeit money. they are still in that business

i grew up watching this as a kid. my sister and i tried to emulate all these movies. the original director, john landis is heading up the project now that a legal dispute with the jackson family has been settled. the enhanced version is set for 2015, maybe in time for halloween. big news from "variety" magazine. netflix has reportedly signed a deal with adam sandler, starring in four films exclusively for the streaming site. we're told the first movie could arrive as early as next year.
