cameraman working in liberia is diagnosed with ebola, making him the fifth american confirmed to have the virus. our very own dr. nancy snyderman and her crew now placed in cautionary quarantine. with the midterms approaching, president obama makes the case for the improving economy but is anybody listening? then on a completely lighter note -- ♪ magic magic baltimore, the orioles kick off postseason play in a big way. is in "way too early." ♪ make the magic happen the magic of baseball ♪ >> hey everybody, good morning, i'm thomas roberts. it is friday, october the 3rd. welcome to "way too early," aka camden yards north. this is a big morning around here. we are going to get everybody singing the magic song for orioles, a second shot coming up because the crew kind of stunk

getting that song off the ground this morning. it's friday, it's been a long week. i'm going to hand jen these hats because we're going to use these later coming up in sports. what a great game, the orioles winning 12-3. we'll talk about that. big news coming up this morning with the fifth american confirmed infected with ebola virus and for the nbc news family, this hits super close to home. a freelance journalist working with dr. nancy snyderman and nbc has been diagnosed with this virus. ashock ka mukpo is being flown back from liberia for treatment. his father says his son worked there three years and felt compelled to return to liberia to shed light on this crisis. dr. nancy and the rest of the crew are being monitored as well. right now showing no symptoms of the virus. they're being flown back to the u.s. on a private charter, being put under quarantine for 21 days. dr. nancy says they present zero to minimal risk. and yesterday reported from where thomas eric duncan was

apparently infected. >> this is the front door of mr. duncan's apartment that he was renting in this small hamlet. it was in the pink house across the courtyard where the young woman, pregnant, now infected with ebola, was calling for help, and he responded. so you drove your taxi? >> reporter: jim was the taxi driver who picked up duncan, the young woman named nadlene, her father and brother. >> you were picking up a sick, pregnant girl, but no idea at all she was sick with ebola? >> no, no, no idea at all. >> reporter: they told him they were afraid she was about to miscarry. >> what did you see? how did she strike you? >> well, i saw her. she was helpless. he was not able to walk by herself. >> so meanwhile in dallas, three more children were pulled from classrooms over concerns they came in contact with duncan. yesterday, county health officials visited the complex where he stayed. officials have said it's been hard to find contractors just to clean the apartment and the

people living there have been given orders to stay put under threat of criminal or civil punishment. and the unit under quarantine still had trash, dirty bedding, and clothes inside when he stayed there. the complex said it wasn't even told duncan had been diagnosed until three days after he had been admitted to the hospital. when duncan initially sought care he was turned away, even though a woman he was with says she told hospital workers multiple times he had been to liberia. the hospital blamed an electronic records flaw for his release. but "the dallas morning news" reports the hospital has lost federal funding over the high rates of readmission and said the facility performs below state and national averages for emergency care. in liberia officials say duncan lied on his health forms about being exposed to someone with the virus and will be prosecuted upon returning. looking at the economy, analysts are optimistic that today's jobs report will show continued growth for the economy in the month of september.

yesterday we learned the number of americans seeking unemployment insurance dropped to its lowest level since 2006. that's another positive sign for the recovery. and that happened on the same day president obama injected himself into the 2014 elections touting his administration's economic achievements, while framing the debate against republicans this fall. >> this progress has been hard but it has been steady and it has been real. and it's the direct result of the american people's drive and their determination and their resilience. it's also the result of sound decisions made by my administration. so it is indisputable that our economy is stronger today than when i took office. for all the work that remains, for all the citizens that we still need to reach, what i want people to know is that there are some really good thing is happening in america. >> a recent nbc news/"wall

street journal" poll finds 43% of americans approve of the president's handling of the economy. 67% believe the country is on the wrong track. after days of heated protest, demonstrators in hong kong now have an agreement to hold talks with local officials backed by the chinese central government. hong kong's top civil servant will represent the city's leadership. hong kong's leader is staying put to fine protesters who threatened to occupy government buildings if he didn't resign by midnight. many employees could not report to work because of barricades set up by protesters. overnight clashes broke out between anti-i government protesters and those who support beijing. tens of thousands of people have been protesting plans for china to vet candidates for elections in 2017. beijing is supporting hong kong's leader and says the protests are "doomed to fail." another country appears poised to join the u.s.-led coalition to defeat islamic state militants in iraq and syria.

turkey's parliament has approved additional military operations in both countries. lawmakers there also authorized foreign troops to conduct operations within turkey. isis is reportedly close to taking control of a key town in syria near the border with turkey. officials say the militants are about one mile away. and that more than 160,000 people have already evacuated. a new report from the united nations says isis has committed "a staggering array" of possible war crimes. they include making kidnapped women sex slaves, using children as soldiers, and carrying out mass executions. meanwhile, a new book from former defense secretary leon panetta offers criticism of how president obama handled the u.s. withdrawal from iraq. panetta says he urged the president to keep some u.s. troops there and iraqi leaders privately did the same thing. but he says it became clear the white house wanted to rid itself of iraq and frequently pushed back on those suggestions. jpmorgan chase is revealing the full extent of the cyber

attack that was waged against the bank over the summer. some 76 million households, 7 million small businesses, all affected, making this attack larger than the ones on target or home depot. no account numbers, passwords or social security numbers were compromised. however, hackers were able to steal names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mails of customers who used online and mobile banking. officials are still investigating this attack. jpmorgan chase says no unusual customer fraud has been detected as a result of that breach. so this morning we now know who is going to be hearing ray rice's appeal of his indefinite fit suspension from the nfl. the league and the players union have both agreed to let barbara jones decide this dispute. she served in the southern district of new york from 1996 to 2013 and was appointed by former president bill clinton. rice was initially suspended two games for domestic violence but the league took additional action after video emerged of him thunching his then-fiance in

a casino elevator. commissioner goodell who is facing criticism for how he initially handled the investigation says jones will have the league's pull cooperation. rnc chair is acknowledging his party could do a better job of presenting the women who have emerged as its top leaders. setting examples of success stories like governors susannah martinez and nikki haley. he says the party does "a really bad job" bragging about its female leaders. at the same event he applauded college republicans for governor rick scott that spoofs tlc's show "say yes to the dress." >> it's a big deal for me now that i graduated from college. the rick scott is perfect! rick scott is becoming a trusted brand. he has new ideas that don't break your budget. >> but mom has other ideas. >> i like the charlie crist. it's expensive and a little outdated, but i know best. >> i think it's a clever ad.

everything is targeted. so sort of analysis that goes on with ads, you've got to consider, where could i place this ad that would get me to the audience i want? >> hm, all right. the college republicans have ads for six male gop candidates and one for wisconsin governor scott walker as well. family business involving a former president, a former governor, a ringing endorsement from one brother to another. >> yeah, i think he wants to be president. i think he'd be a great president. he understands what it's like to be president, for not only the person running or serving, plus family. i of course was pushing him to run for president. he, of course, was saying, i haven't made up my mind. and i truly don't think he has. but -- plus i don't think he liked it that his older brother was pushing it. >> all right, so jeb bush has said he will make his decision by the end of the year, based on what's best for his family. people close to the former governor hint that his wife

louisiana and now they're down around the new orleans area. we still have storms around kentucky and also near tennessee. so it's a big storm system. we have a lot of rain up there this morning. indianapolis and chicago, slow go. i'm sure we're going to have travel delays around o'hare. down around the new orleans area, that's where we are watching probably the strongest storms now. storm reports go 207 reports of wind damage and a few tornados yesterday. here's the new orleans radar. you're okay probably for another hour in new orleans but those stores near baton rouge will come your way and drench you probably for a good two hours. here's your weekend forecast. today, again, we have friday night football, we have a lot of friday afternoon, friday evening plans. especially areas of indiana, ohio, michigan, kentucky, tennessee, down to than that. that's where the storms will be today. not till very late tonight in the d.c. area. then on saturday, that's when we're going to be watching those storms up there in new england. so i do think sunday's going to be great coast to coast. but especially saturday, new

>> serious story. mississippi, sportsmanship transcended high school football. the brandon bulldogs were up 21-0 in the second quarter when the quarterback for the rival team got hurt and couldn't continue. they only had one qb but the bulldogs had two so the bulldogs did what any good sportsman would do, offered up their starting quarterback to the team. >> they called me up during halftime with the coach. of course, he made a joke, you know. you do bad for us i'll send you back over there. i didn't know what to think. but you know, i told them, you know -- i was planning on going down there, we were going to score a couple of times. they're a great group of guys. >> wow. >> i don't think any rival team would normally do that. i think that's an incredible act of sportsmanship. he did well against the team, two touchdowns, driving for a third when time ran out. he was actually playing hard too. >> pretty cool. >> cool story. let's go to a chest-thumping talk from matthew mcconaughey. the actor dropped by his beloved university of texas last week to help rile up the football team
