cameraman's plane is refueling in bangor, maine, ahead before it departs for omaha, nebraska, where he'll get treatment. nbc's jay grace is liy is life condition. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, frances. for the last two days the news coming out of the isolation unit has not been good. telling us that thomas eric duncan's condition is deteriorating. the struggle to save thomas eric duncan's life continues this morning inside an isolation unit at texas health presbyterian hospital after his condition was downgraded over the weekend from serious to critical. >> i pray for you to get well. >> reporter: relatives in north carolina say after talking with him by phone last week, doctors now tell them he's on a respirator and dialysis machine. >> we understand that his situation has taken a turn for the worse. we know that ebola is a very serious disease, and we're hoping for his recovery. >> reporter: a second american

battling the deadly virus, a freelance journalist, is on board a specially equipped medevac jet right now flying from liberia to omaha, nebraska, where he'll immediately begin treatments at the same medical center that successfully treated u.s. relief doctor rick sacra. >> i am so relieved that he is coming back to an environment where he can get the simplest of medical care which is intravenous fluids which is life saving in the ebola virus. >> reporter: a virus that public health teams are confident they can stop from spreading in the u.s. >> we have no doubt that we will stop it in its tracks in texas. >> reporter: the centers for disease control is currently monitoring a group of close to 40 people including 10 who had direct contact with duncan and remain quarantined right now. yeah, and to this point no one in that group has shown any symptoms of the virus. still the cdc will continue to monitor them for the next two weeks. that is the latest live here in

dallas. i'm jay gray. frances, back to you. >> thank you very much. an update on dr. rick sacra's condition. tests show that he's not suffering from a recurrence of ebola. sacra was hospitalized hospital in massachusetts. he had a cough and fever and has a respiratory infection. a touching tribute from the father of the 4-year-old new jersey boy who health officials confirm died of enterovirus d-68. eli waller's death is the first that's directly linked to the respiratory virus. eli stayed home from school on september 25th with what his parents thought was pinkeye. he was asymptomatic when he went to sleep and never woke up the next day. according to the cdc, more than 500 people in 43 states have come down with enterovirus. his father remembers him as, quote, a shy little puppy who wants only to make people proud and happy, maybe tripping a bit over his own paws, but truly full of unconditional love. eli was the youngest of a set of

triplets. following the latest on isis, we have learned a u.s. aid worker being held captive by the terror group wrote a letter to his parents saying he is afraid to die. the parents of peter kassig say he was taken captive in syria last year. they say he wrote them a letter in june which read, in part, "i am obviously pretty scared to die, but the hardest part is not knowing, wondering, hoping, and wondering if i should even hope at all." meanwhile, british prime minister david cameron is pressing leaders to do everything possible to track down the man seen in all four isis beheading videos. cameron says military leaders must step up efforts and possibly send special forces. and back at home, republican senator kelly ayotte told fox news that she's worried the president is only confronting isis as a way to help democrats in the upcoming midterms. >> i think what we have here, chris, is a problem where the president's foreign policy is being trapped by his campaign rhetoric, and i'm very fearful

welcome back to "first look." quick weather update. we had strong thunderstorms go through arkansas overnight. right now they just passed through little rock. memphis, you are next about a half hour from now. if you're traveling in the memphis area, do so quickly now. if not, wait for the storms to

pass. also right over dallas and fort worth, new thunderstorms are popping up. this is the area of concern now. later today it makes its way into mississippi. and from nashville to memphis all the way through louisville to the lexington area back to paducah. 19 million people at risk today of severe thunderstorms as we've got a strong cold front kicking into some pretty warm and humid air. and as far as the forecast goes in the northeast, it's a cold morning. everyone had their heat on pretty much the last two nights up there in new england. it's going to be in the 60s today. it's going to be a little more refreshing. d.c. not bad. today is a much nicer day than tomorrow. because tomorrow all that rain and storms that are now in the south and the tennessee valley will be shifting up new england and as we go throughout tuesday afternoon. we're also watching temperatures recovering in the middle of the country. so it was a little chilly in some spots this weekend. it's definitely improving. and we don't have a lot of violent weather. after we get past today's severe storms, the rest of the week looks pretty good. >> i always call it the first heater smell. that heater kicks on for the first time this season, it's that smell. that time of year.

>> a lot of fireplaces starting for the first time, too. that's fun. >> sure is. stories making news, crews looking for malaysia flight 370 are back in the indian ocean. the search was put on hold for four months so crews could map the search area. three ships will concentrate on a stretch of the indian ocean using a new high-resolution map of the ocean floor. the plane vanished in march with 239 people on board. this is what's left of freight train in louisiana after it rammed into a transport truck stuck on the tracks. that freight train then derailed and slammed into a big oak tree. the driver of the truck jumped out just in time before it was hit. but the train conductor was treated for serious injuries and an engineer suffered minor ones. 50 houses were evacuated for two hours out of concern that a tank car of pressurized gas 3450migh explode. it's rehab for michael phelps. the announcement comes one week after being busted for his second dui. in his tweet yesterday, he told fans, quote, i'm going to take time away to attend a program

here. you've got the head of the cdc who's going to be at the white house today. the pentagon might be sending more troops into liberia, too. and then some lawmakers calling on more stringent health screenings at airports, too. is enough being done as far as protecting the american public here in the united states? >> you know, if you ask the american public, not enough's being done. more than half of the country, not enough is being done. and that's everything from protecting them from mass shootings to things like ebola. so i think there's going to be a lot of people who are, you know, maybe with an eye to 2016 lobbying to have the best response here. >> especially specifically with ebola. everybody is watching dallas and saying how did it get that far? how did it get to the point where this man was here in the united states without being screened, had to get to the point where there's family members and people were stuck in that small apartment with those items there that were soiled and not removed. you know, it's tough. you have some lawmakers here saying you know what? we've got to step up to the plate. and what do you think is going to happen there within the white

house with the head of the cdc and so much to tackle on as far as what else can be done? >> yeah. you know, i think they're going to try to come up with a way to better screen people coming into the country. you saw them picking up someone at a newark airport a few days ago, saying, you know, you've been in liberia. you're showing flulike symptoms. you're going to see and just test. that person turned out to be not positive for ebola, but i think they're going to try and start doing things like that where they can figure out how to best screen people. the person who in dallas actually lied on one of his forms. and i think that's a big part of how to figure out how to do that. and that, you know, when someone seeks medical help, they know this person is at risk. >> more questions there in airports and even taking temperatures. let's talk about this, big day here for the supreme court taking on some major cases that may start off kind of ho-hum but then it erupted into huge and monumental ruling on gay marriage and obamacare. give us a rundown. >> they're starting with a case,

hardware thieves who threw chainsaws at officers. it happened during a high-speed chase. investigators are trying to enhance this dashcam video to help identify the suspects. coast guard crews came to the rescue of a man who was flighting in a giant bubble off the coast of miami. now that man says he wants that bubble back. according to "the miami herald," his passport, greencard, phone were all in the bubble which rescuers left in the ocean. now for entertainment news. at the movie, ben affleck's thriller "gone girl" took the top spot, grossing $38 million. and "annabelle" wasn't far behind. the famed rainbow room is new again following the grand reopening right here at 30 rockefeller plaza. bill's got a tab started already. cocktails on him. >> never pay it but i got that tab building. >> b.b. king was forced to cancel the rest of his tour dates during a performance friday night. no updates have been made to

king's condition since saturday. and paul revere and the raiders died on saturday. revere was known as, quote, the mad man of rock 'n' roll for his wild wardrobe and on-stage perso persona. the cause of death was cancer. paul revere was 76. charlie seen is being sued by a dental text nation wchnici. sheen's publicist revealed that sheen did knock over a dental tray but other elements of the story just aren't true. he also revealed that sheen was taking medication for a shoulder injury at the time of the incident, but no illegal substances as original reports claim. and taylor swift will now shake it off on "the voice" helping the contestants choose songs that match their own strengths. and who needs ken & barbie when you can have kim and kanye. baby north west. when i first heard this story, i thought it was going to be, like, really luxe and high end.
