for joining us today. i'm betty nguyen. the prime minister of canada is calling it an act of terrorism. a masked gunman opened fire at the national war memorial in ottawa, killing a soldier standing guard. the suspect has been identified as 32-year-old michael joseph hall. he's been using the name michael zehaf-bibeau since converting to islam. zehaf-bibebizehaf-bibeau was shd after firing his weapon. this is the second attack in canada this week. nbc's jay gray is in ottawa. jay, good morning to you. what is the latest? >> reporter: good morning, betty. the lockdown is over, but the city still on edge. there is a heavy police presence here in the downtown area, and there has been since yesterday's terror attack. >> there was a man with a rifle shooting at a bunch of people. >> reporter: as the first shots rang out -- >> just, pow, pow. >> reporter: -- bystanders rushed to the side of a fallen soldier but were unable to save corporal nathan cirillo, who had

been standing guard at canada's national war memorial. >> there's no pain greater than losing a loved one. to have it happen in such circumstances as this morning is beyond expression and underlined by sad anger within my heart. >> reporter: next, witnesses say the gunman hijacked a car and drove to canada's parliament building, walked inside and opened fire in the central hall of honor. three people were injured as lawmakers scrambled before the suspect was shot and killed by the sergeant-at-arms. a bystander says this cell phone video shows the gunman police have identified as michael joseph hall from quebec, also known as michael zehaf-bibeau, a recent muslim convert. last friday, officials in canada raised the terrorism threat level from low to medium, citing what they called an increase in chatter from radical islamic organizations. and just three days ago, a man officers say has tied to radical islam drove his car into two soldiers in montreal, killing

one. >> this week's events are a grim reminder that canada is not immune to the types of terrorist attacks we have seen elsewhere around the world. >> reporter: as investigators continue to try and find out how and why it happened here. now, there are a couple of things we've learned about the suspect overnight. first of all, he's been arrested several times over the last ten years on drug charges. and recently, authorities confiscated his passport because they were afraid he was preparing to go overseas to fight. that is the latest here in ottawa, i'm jay gray. betty, back to you. >> all right, thank you, jay. well, white house security is tight after another fence-jumper. it happened on the north lawn late wednesday. the guy, 20 to 25 yards from the fence before he was tackled by officers and canine police dogs. the suspect, a maryland man, was unarmed. the dogs, though, they were hurt but are said to be okay. the president was inside at the time. now, this is the second security scare. last month, omar gonzalez made

it into the east room. the iraq war vet was armed with a knife. a new scandal for the secret service. it was a tight-lipped mission dubbed "operation moonlight." homeland security uncovered it. in 2011, agents allegedly bailed on their posts protecting president obama. why? to check on a female colleague who was reportedly being harassed by a neighbor. the trips happened five times, two of which while the president was at the white house. homeland security is now calling for a full investigation. also this morning, as ebola hops across the globe, images of hope here at home. nbc cameraman ashoka mukpo smiling and virus-free, hugging the medical staff who saved his life. in an nbc news exclusive, he tried to answer questions so many of us had. >> do you know how you contracted ebola? >> i mean, that's the million-dollar question. i was working with various news organizations. and in the course of that week, i was at ebola treatment units,

i was following burial teams. >> reporter: okay, if you were starting to feel funny, why were you working? why would you put other people at risk? >> the moment i started to feel funny, i went home. i mean, there was a five-minute period, literally, five to ten-minute period between the first moment that i thought, you know, what's that, and i had a thermometer in my mouth. >> reporter: and we have some good news this morning, especially for nina pham. she is now in good condition. as for amber vinson, her family says she is ebola-free. and bentley got good news as well, tests show he is virus-free. and now ebola zone patients will be scanned for 21 days. as americans back tighter screening rules. there is renewed outrage in the investigation of michael brown's shooting, and this time, it's coming from the department of justice. the "los angeles times" says the doj is condemning a series of leaks, calling them "irresponsible" and "highly

troubling." there seems to be an inappropriate effort to influence public opinion about this case." benjamin crump, the lawyer for michael brown's family, gave an interview to msnbc's joy-ann reid. he says the leaks are not occurring by happenstance. >> what's the use to having a grand jury if everything's going to be leaked out anywheay? so, the family is obviously frustrated. they believe that these leaks are intentional and they are very, very heartbroken. >> the most recent leak with this "washington post" report. according to their sources, several african american witnesses are corroborating darren wilson's account. and then there's this bombshell -- "the st. louis post-dispatch" released the official autopsy and toxicology report. the paper says it got it from the county medical examiner's office. nbc news sent a producer to the medical examiner's office. an official there denies giving the paper a copy of that report. meanwhile, a forensic

pathologist says she was misquoted in the paper's article. she clarified her analysis on "the last word with lawrence o'donnell." >> we only have partial information here. we don't have the scene information, we don't have the police investigation, we don't have all the witness statements. and you can't interpret autopsy findings in a vacuum. you need to take them in the context of the scene investigation. >> all right, we have other news to tell you about. a black eye for the ncaa powerhouse unc. for 18 years, at least 3,100 student athletes took bogus courses and got high grades for them. according to a report released by unc, it was a scam that allowed them to remain eligible. the students took the so-called paper classes in a department formerly known as african and afro american studies. allegations about the fraud were first brought to light five years ago, but this is the first time the school is apologizing for what happened. four employees have already been fired. five others are facing disciplinary actions.

we are still waiting to learn whether human remains found over the weekend near charlottesville, virginia, are those of missing uva student hannah graham. meanwhile, though, hundreds of students at virginia tech held a vigil last night in honor of hannah. her disappearance hits home for many at virginia tech, because in 2009, student morgan harrington was abducted and murdered. both the hannah graham and morgan harrington cases are now linked forensically through suspect jesse matthew. all right, let's get to some sports now. we're going to shift gears. after the giants' crushing in the season opener, the royals get even in game two. >> and he has delivered into the gap! both runs are going to score! that's hammered into left, off the bat of infante. it's gone! >> the royals tied the series at 1-1 with a 7-2 victory over the giants. the teams head to san francisco for the next three games. world number one-ranked

welcome back. the nor'easter hit pretty hard yesterday afternoon and into last night. overnight we saw huge waves, reported as high as 24 feet high with some buoys just offshore. some waves made their way into plum island. you can see them battering the coastline there. up to 100,000 people without power at max last night. the strong winds, especially in coastal massachusetts. the nor'easter's located just south of cape cod now. it's going to slowly linger through this area. the worst effects are slowly heading north. it was pretty windy and gusty even in new york city as we went through yesterday evening, and the bands of rain continue. by far, the worst of it this

morning is into boston, and boston northwards just getting this persistent band off the ocean. so, it's going to be one of those inside-out umbrella mornings there for all of coastal massachusetts, including the city of boston. and the winds have been pretty gusty, up to 40-mile-per-hour gusts just reported in boston. they call it a nor'easter because the winds out ahead of the storm come out of the northeast and you can see that direction there, the winds coming down from the northeast. so, again, the storm effects will be getting lesser and lesser during the day from new york city southwards, but still heavy rain up there in the northeast. the rest of the country's actually looking pretty good. there's actually going to be, betty, a partial solar eclipse right around sunset today -- >> oh, yeah? >> -- for areas of the east coast. if you're in the northeast, most likely you're not going to see it because the clouds. but the further west and north you are in the country, the better the show will be. in areas of the pacific northwest, they may get 60% of it covered up late in the afternoon. >> wow. so, take pictures so the rest of us can actually see it. >> you can't look at it, though. >> do it however you're supposed

to do it, the safe way. stories making news this morning. the three denver teenage girls who were allegedly trying to join the islamic state were likely victims of online predators, according to officials who interviewed school administrators. prior to flying to germany, the girls reportedly tweeted about their trip. they have been in denver since monday but have not returned to school yet. a judge ruled that nfl commissioner roger goodell must testify during a hearing about player ray rice's suspension, but since this isn't a criminal case, it is unclear if goodell will, in fact, testify. the hearing will be held on november 5th and 6th. and there is nothing, nothing like comfort food to help mend a broken heart. a woman in china reportedly stayed at a 24-hour kfc for an entire week after getting dumped by her boyfriend. she says she went in to buy some chicken wings and ended up taking some time to think. aww, we've all been there. just need to give her a hug. all right, so, the richest and poorest members of congress,

politico. they're reserving $360,000 for spending there. according to the center for responsive politics, this season is about to break the record for most expensive midterms ever at nearly $4 billion. as for presidential elections, 2012 cost $6.2 billion. on the topic of money, we have "roll call's" annual list of the richest members of congress sorted by net worth. darrell issa is at the top with a whopping $357 million! mostly from investments. and near the bottom of the list, dnc chair debbie wasserman schultz comes in at number 536. and last, number 538, david v valle dei, who is in the hole. tom pitchri is on his way ot but refuses to endorse the
