safe to ride the subway. there's new york governor doing the same thing. these are not guys you usually see on the subway. but they're doing these subway rides today to show that it's safe. they're doing this to counter any worry about any news that the doctor spiked a fever yesterday morning was diagnose nosed with ebola last night. the message is that, yes, new york city has its first patient, but it's okay. eight million residents of new york city. it's okay to take the subway. it is okay to take the bus. that doctor went bole e bowling on wednesday night before he got sick. it's okay to go bowling at that bowling alley. it's okay to go bowling even at other bowling allies. even ones in other cities or states. even in south america, do they bowl in south america? it's okay to drink coffee from places that dr. craig spencer got coffee before he got sick.

it's okay to eat at the places where the doctor ate before he got sick. these are pictures of our staff dinner tonight, which we ordered from the meatball shop, which is a delicious new york city joint that dr. spencer before he got sick. it's not the first time we ordered from that meatball shop, but it was delicious. and it's okay. it's all going to be okay. dr. craig spencer is in isolation at bellevue hopt in new york where he's being treated for his illness. officials believe he was transported safely once he was s symptomatic. at the local level he continues to be treated. beyond that local immediate level, though, we do have something really important going on in the country. i did not expect this. maybe i am naive. we have two totally opposite and divergent types of responseses

to ebola as a nation. when we think back as this time as a country, when books are written about this and they will be, as a challenge and a health crisis and a moment that called for leadership in this nation, and it's almost hard to believe but there has been a huge partisan divide in the response, a difference in the two kinds of responses that we have had in this country. this really is turning out to be the republican response. >> you can get ebola sitting next to somebody on a bus -- >> no, you can't. darrell issa, today, he can't tell eboli than any ebola, but he can tell people, don't take the bus. and peter king tells -- look at

these quotes. it's time for the doctors to realize that they were wrong. he, peter king, has determined that ebola has mutated as a virus to become an airborne disease. you would not have heard that from the doctors but peter king figured it out, it's airborne and mutated, you can get it. you probably have it if you've been out in the air, people. wake up. it's one thing you have people in positions of power who have no idea what they're talking about, nevertheless using their positions of power trying to let everybody that they know and the authorities don't to try to freak people out as much as possible and deliberately undermine people's confidence in health authorities. encouraging as much panic as possible with made up

disinformation. so that's one model for how to lead in response to a crisis. that really is what they're doing. that's rand paul saying hey, i'm a doctor, and trust me when i tell you you are going to get this thing at a cocktail party. don't go to cocktail parties. that's peter kane saying the doctors are wrong. the doctors are wrong. and he, peter king, is right because he looked up the word mutated this morning. and against that, against whatever storm surge of panic can be general rated by that tide of nonsense against that, there's the brooklyn borough president saying i am going to bowl. there's the mayor of new york city riding the subway, and it's

africa. this staff worker had no symptoms when she flew in, but the new jersey department of health put her under a 21 day quarantine. this evening that worker did develop a fever and is now in isolation. it is not yet clear if the new york and new jersey region has its second patient in two days, but that may be the case. if it is the case, both of these people will have been in sterile circumstances once they came home. joining us now is the director of the national center for disaster preparedness. thanks for being with us. >> the 21-day quarantine announcement today. this is new jersey and new york specific. it goes beyond what they're doing in other states and beyond cdc recommendations at this point. is it a smart move?

does it make sense to you? >> i certainly understand the public pressure to do this. this is an evolving process. the policies are changing, as we speak. and the reason is that as we learn more, as we're trying to appreciate what the actual risks are, the policy is evolving. we have to be careful, though, because if we go too far in making people alarmed, then we're increasing the amount of screening and the amount of quarantine. this is a downside to this is e in which it can discourage people from wanting to go and volunteer at the most important thing that we can do which is to treat the ebola at its e its source in west africa. >> you're saying by making it essential essentially, upon return from home for american health workers to go participate in that, you may discourage people? >> yeah, are these are

extraordinary procedures by doctors and nurses saying they're going to go and help out with this dangerous disease in africa. their trying to make this decision that the person says i'm going to go for four weeks, but now i'm finding out i will have to be quarantined. when i get back, it could tilt the decision to go in the first place in the wrong direction of providing services in those thee countries in africa. there's a downside to all of those policies. but on the other hand, what i'm hoping for is that we keep focused on the science and not go above and beyond what makes sense from a rational public health point of view and scientific point of view. we're in a spectrum here. so on the one hand, we're dealing with policies and protocols derived from the science. and on the other hand, it's an abundance of caution where we're sort of bowing to public pressure. and we have to find that

balance. this is what i think the policymakers are are struggling with. where is the right balance between the science only and giving, you know, some credence to the fact that people are nervous about it. if we go too far, as i said, it becomes a discouragement to what people need to do. >> is there a response if, a consequence, to having political leaders say things like you don't take the bus, yeou're goig to get it at a cocktail party. don't believe what the cdc tells you. the doctors don't know anything. don't believe the authorities. >> it's a little horrifying when politicians are saying things that are actual hi literally contrary to the scientific information. >> yeah. >> and that does no good what so ever, except cause a lot of chaos. we understand it's the midterm election season. we understand all of that. we understand people may not understand anything about this. but if you're a political leader, it really better to stick to things that the scientists say are true. and one of the things that's actually been impressive about the process of new york has been an extraordinary amount of focus on the science and having

this is a place called cafe racer. it's in seattle. 6 it's an espresso bar where this's hosts and live music. it hosts live music. on may 12th, at around 11:00 a.m., a 40-year-old walked into cafe racer and started shooting. he was armed with two pistols. he shot one victim near the door in the back of the head and then moved into the bar area shooting another group of patrons. two of those who were shot at the cafe died at the scene and two more were pronounced dead at a local hospital. he then shot and killed a 52-year-old woman in a posh king lot while attempting to car jack her suv. local schools were put down on lockdown. eventually, after police closed in on the suspected, he shot and

killed himself. it was may 2012 in seattle, six people dead, including the shooter. two years later, in june of this year, the 26-year-old man walked on to the campus of seattle, a small christian school, he entered a science and engineering building and managed to shoot three people. he killed one of them before he was tackled while he was trying to reload. students and faculty members held the shooter down until police could arrive at the scene, and later they said he was, quote, hell bent on killing a lot of people. those mass shootings in the seattle area followed other shootings in recent years. an '08 shooting left six people dead, four police officers were shot and killed in 2009. then, today, it happened again. this time, the scene was a high school. in a suburb north of seattle at around 10:30 this morning, a freshman at that high school armed with what has been described as a pistol started

shooting inside a school's cafeteria. they say he remained calm. the students who were shot were sitting with the gunman at the time. >> he was just quite. he was sitting there. everyone was talking. all of the sudden, i see him stand up, pull something out of his pocket. at first, i thought it was someone making a really loud noise, with, like a big, loud pop until i heard four more after that. and then i saw three kids just fall from a table, like they were phamming to the ground, dead. i jumped under the table as fast as i could and when it stopped, i looked back up and i saw he was trying to reload his gun and when that happened i just ran in the office direction and i was out of there as fast as i could. >> tonight police say a total of six people were shot at this warpbs state high school today,

including the gunman who died at the scene of a self-inflicted wound. so he killed himself at e and shot five others. one female student has been pronounced dead. four other students were rushed to local students. it's a sign of just how common shootings like this have come. not just across the country but in the seattle area specifically. >> we are ready to handle these cases. we are a level two trauma center. we've had a very good response from our medical staff. about 25 doctors showed up. we had two neurosurgeons on the scene. we had a heart surgeon, a chest surgeon as well as multiple trauma surgeons. >> can you talk a little bit about any kind of planning or drills you had at this school that shed some light to how you prepare for a horrible day like this to potentially happen? >> yeah, we have done training

at the school. it's with our s.w.a.t. team. i cannot say exactly when the last time that took place. >> the police had done training for this at that school. the local hospital had been conducting drills for a shooting just like this. tonight they get to be added to the list of scenes like this. three of the four rushed to the hospital is in critical condition and one is in serious condition. we'll let you know as we learn more. okay. time to visit the e-mail box of your older uncle, and the one who watches fox, and in that world of a grieved conservative paranoia, this is the biggest deal in the world right now. this is official surveillance in maricopa county arizona. you can see people entering the facility coming through the doors, and they are coming in

there to drop off ballots for the election. this county has a collection box set up and you see person after person coming through the doors and dropping off ballots, but then in this video, there is this guy and your fox-news watching uncle is upset by this guy now. he is wearing shorts and flip flops, and a t-shirt, and it's called citizens for a better arizona, and it's a group that says they are trying to increase latino voter participation in the state, and the guy in the footage works for that group, and what you see in this footage that has your uncle so upset, is the dude is not just dropping off a ballot or to cast a vote in the election, that guy is there to drop off a whole bunch of votes for the election. you can see him clearly in this footage. he does not drop one ballot and leave like everybody else, he stays longer because he is putting ballot after ballot

video is clearly hispanic. first, the time, it's nice, the weather is always nice in arizona, but this footage of the guy in flip shops, and shorts and a t-shirt, it was shot in august. this whole thing happened in august, and it's just now being rolled out now by the conservative media a week and a half before the election so we can provide a scary feeling. sure, down at your local precinct, you may be planning to vote your one vote, but latinos, they are stuffing the ballot box, be afraid, that's one thing to know about it, the timing. it happened months ago, but they are making it a story now and it is a huge story on the right. the other thing to know about this story is the guy is not stealing the election. it's perfectly legaling and a

long-standing practice, it's okay to drop off other peoples absentee ballots at the board of elections. it's okay. and that fact of arizona law has led to some hilarious journalistic updating of some of the freak out about this and the glenn beck, they have the headline catching the guy doing something at the ballot box, and you have read about how a man was seen stuffing hundreds of ballots, and the entire incident caught on surveillance video. they give an exact time of the crime, between 12:54 and 1:04. america used to be a nation of laws where one western had one vote, and i'm sad to say, not anymore. you go through ten paragraphs of the damming reporting about this

horrible ballot stuffing that has happened, and then, oh, look, you skip to the bottom, and editor's note, this post has been updated. go back and skip 11 paragraphs into the story, and yvonne reid, she eventually gets a call from the glenn beck folks after they posted their damming story and unfortunately she tells them, quote, people can bring in somebody else's ballot, there is no law against bringing in other ballots. but still, leave the story up. red arrow. the crime of legally participating in the normal voting process while appearing to be hispanic has blown up on the right this week like a bomb. your uncle is not going to pass you the marshmallow yams this year until he gets a straight answer from you about what

happened in maricopa county because he saw the tape. so you should know that is part one of what they rolled out this week. but it's a week and a half before the national election and your paranoid conservative uncle's in box needs filling at this time, and it's not just the blogs, the fox news channel is doing its part as well. they decided to invent their own blood curleding tale. >> we are getting warnings a new law has opened the door to possible voter fraud in a critical senate race. it was 16 months ago when the democrat governor of colorado signed the first of its kind new election law. it allows residents to print ballots from their home computers and encouraged them to

turn ballots over to collectors in appears to be an effort to do away with polling places. sounds terrible. that's because they made it up. >> they have been correcting the news channel since they started to make up the story this week. quote, tuesday's episode of fox news incorrectly told viewers that colorado voters are able to print ballots using their home computers and vote by turning them in. the segment prompted several viewers to reach out to learn more. the claim that colorado law allows for home printed ballots is simply false. most colorado voters cannot print a ballot and use it to vote and there is only one group that can, those serving in the military, and that has nothing to do with the new election law,

it was in place beforehand. colorado has a vote by mail system this year, which other states does too, but fox decided in the state of colorado, that's terrifying. and the long-standing way that colorado military voters have always voted, that's also on fox news now a democratic plot to steal the election, and it's something brand-new, and only that it's for military voters and it's not new at all. your uncle needs reading material. conservative media needs the republican base to get alarmed there might be voting going on out there, some of it that appear to be latino fraud, and some of it where people have started to vote for democrats, fraud. this is what the next week and a half is going to be like heading into the election. a frenzy of made up stories of

what they are hoping people doing something what seems illegal. the republican party proper is not responsible for right-wing blogs and the stuff they make up on fox news channel and your uncle and his where's the birth certificate t-shirt. in mainstream republican politics, at least you sort of expect a different tone and you expect a week and a half out to talk about what they have to offer the electric trut. christie is setting the stage for his own widely anticipated run for presidency. here he is talking about 2016. >> if all you are concerned about is 2016, let me suggest

this to you. if you have any chance of electing a republican president there's a bunch of things we need to do, but the first is to have a good bench of republican candidates, and i am convinced the next president of the united states is going to be a governor, and it needs to be. >> guess who is a governor? he is building himself as a potential 2016 candidate. he says electing governors will put the party put up a good slate of candidates to run in 2016. in order to win the white house, the first thing they need is a good bench of candidates, and that's the first thing they need to get a good republican in the white house. here is the second thing they need. >> secondly, what would you rather have if you are a republican candidate and the nominee for president? would you rather have rick scott in florida over seeing the voter phebge

phe mechanism or charlie crist, and who would you rather have in ohio? the fact is, if you don't really care about those states, you will care about who is running the states in 2016, and what kind of political apparatus they set up. >> wow. you know, in theory, which party is in control of a governmental apparatus in a state should not be a factor of who should win in that state. gaining partisan control of the voting mechanism is not supposed to be what you admit to plan your elections. when they were first reported in the record, he was paraphrased,

how can we cheat if we don't control the votes. the governor seems to suggest that control of the voting mechanism by a republican governor can help appear republican candidate, and the paper calls the governor's comments disturbing and says christie's point can only be determined one way. that editorial appeared yesterday morning, and yesterday afternoon, governor christie does another appearance and asked about what he said and meant. this is his clarification. everybody read too much into that. you know who gets to appoint people and who gets to decide what are the rules are. i would rather have republican governors counting the votes as republicans than i would have tke democrats.

i want republicans counting the votes when i am running. usually it's the media that is talking about taking over the vote counting, and usually that's the crazy stuff coming from the conservative media, and official republicans are careful to avoid language like that. this year you can take the goal posts and run downfield with them, because even when the mainstream gop is saying they need republicans to win governorships to insure a presidential candidate wins the count. we have to have conservative media pointing and screaming about hispanic people voting. this is how they are stoking their base for the elections this year. when it looks like the republicans are going to do well f. the democrats end up doing well in the election, imagine what they are going to make up then. this is nuts this year.
