good morning to you. i'm francis in for tamron hall. this is "newsnation." we begin with the investigation into a massive rocket explosion along the virginia coast. right now a team of nasa and faa investigators are on the ground in virginia. they are trying to figure out why an unmanned rocket exploded moments after lift off last night. search teams are collecti i debris at the launch pad, surrounding beach and water. it could be seen and heard for miles around. take a look at the video taken from an observation area near the launch site. the mission was run by a commercial company hired by nasa. it was carrying 5,000 pounds of cargo all of which was lost. along with a rocket and the capsule. the total loss? $200 million. luckily no one was hurt.

8:05 am
today. >> i think that sentiment is probably about right. i think all the promost caters think the republicans have the advantage. there's the possibility that democrats can hold on in these tight competitive senate races right now. in some ways it's almost a tail of two electorates now. you look at the national polls that are out there, it seems that republicans are on the precedence of a wave election. when you look at the other contested states, we're talking about the contested senate battle grounds, there are so many close contests. we often see in past elections often time the toss up close contest break in one direction. it's very possible a lot of elections allow democrats to have good news come election day. it's just now time for people to start counting the votes. >> absolutely. and again leading up to this with days ahead. let's hear what mitt romney had to say in an interview today on morning joe about the gop's prospect of taking control of the senate. >> everything is about getting more senators elected for my

party so we can have a house and a senate that can pass bills. >> do you think that will happen? >> i do but it's close. it's hard to predict. we'll pick up a lot of seats. do we get the majority or not? i don't know. if we do we'll end gridlock. we'll pass bills. >> right. we're talking about ten close calls here. in some cases by five points or less. is the bottom line most of the races are too close to call. what do you see happening? >> they are too close to call. we may not know who controls the senate until december or january if the race is in georgia and louisiana go into a runoff. right now it really is the republican's sort of election to lose. they haven't had any big gaps like they did in the last election with todd akin and the legitimate rape comment. i think democrats have done a solid job in putting many of their republican counter parts on the defensive. you see in georgia david purdue has to keep answering questions about his outsourcing comments.
8:07 am
right now it's just still too close to call in a lot of races. >> a lot can happen in the six days that is left. anything can happen in short of a misstep that you talked about. joan, what is key for next tuesday? turn out? >> i think turn out is key. we're seeing a lot of early voting but election day matters. and the republicans have done something very unique that mark talked about. two electorate. we have a midterm electorate where republicans are narrow castly mainly to white voters. democrats are still playing the field. trying to get in the south, white working class voters who may not like the president as well as really emphasize black and latino turn out. it's tough. it gives more advantages in the 2016 in the presidential races but it's a tough sell in at lot of these states where they're tieing need red state democrats to the president. and they're squirming in different directions. >> speaking to that, let's talk about where the president is. where he is not as far as the campaign trail. he campaigned last night for the

msnbc's "up," with a closer look at how this race could shape up. always good to get your perspective when it comes to this, steve. >> let's start with the obvious bad news for democrats. as you say, mark udall, running for reelection, state democrats really hoping to hang on to. what you're seeing here is the average of all polls taken in colorado right now. and you're seeing mark udall, the democrat losing by a little bit more than three points. that's significant when you're talking about the average of all polls. that's the bad news for democrats. whenever your party's behind, you're going to say the polls are wrong. there's a reason for that. i want to show you what that reason is. so go back here and see the battleground. inside colorado here. we have to go back to 2010 to show you this. this is the last time a major competitive senate election was held in colorado. in the year 2010 and what you see here is michael bennett the democrat, he was an appointed incumbent.
8:52 am
very close race. 48-46. 2010, that's the republican wave year. the tea party backlash. all of that, you know, states all over the country were turning red. colorado state blue. the amazing thing about this race was, for the final month of this campaign, there were 11 polls taken in colorado. in none of those 11 polls did michael bennett, the democrat lead. he did not lead in a single poll in the last month and won on election day. how did he win on election day? this is basically the rosetta stone. they want to replicate this this year. they think they can prove the polls wrong. i want to highlight a couple places. in this circle. denver and the suburbs around denver. and this is el paso county. where colorado springs is. the air force academy, focus on the family, very conservative. this is the republican heart of colorado here. this is the democratic heart of colorado here. so when udall talks about defying the polls when his campaign talks about defying the polls, there's something specific they're looking at. two things, one, take a look at
8:53 am
this, this is suburban jefferson county. just outside of denver. and you see the numbers here in 2010 mirrored what happened statewide. 48-46 for the democrats. so can they replicate that? can they -- the suburban voters turn against the republican? if that doesn't happen, they need to turn it out in denver. 190,000 voters turn out in denver. bennett won 3/4 of the vote there. so election night, that's where to be looking. coming in the suburbs with republicans defecting? or is it coming from denver with higher turnout. one of those two things is going to have to happen if the democrats prove the polls wrong again. >> fascinating to see that reminder in history here. and especially if history is going to repeat itself, you might take that same map and that same breakup and may apply again. steve, thank you very much. you can always watch "up with steve kornacki" on msnbc. there is certainly a lot going on this morning, and here are some of the things we just
