witt." police are searching for a hit-and-run driver that killed three trick-or-treaters. reporter, beverly white, of knbc, has more. >> reporter: scenes of horror where three girls out trick-or-treating were killed. crowds formed as the news spread. >> we have several witnesses that witnessed the collision and we located what we believe to be at this time the suspect vehicle. >> two, possibly three men, parked the car in the parking lot. >> i saw a vehicle leaving the scene, the window was messed up, and the car was pretty bad. >> stevens chased the vehicle and called police.

meanwhile, as word spread in the close-knit apartment community, neighbors grieved the girls, all 13 years old, including one set of twins. >> they were always laughing. always had a smile on their face. >> that's unbelievable. they just ruined three lives. >> i wish i could have said something to them, to the fact to just stop, and i know they were scared, and they have had to have been because of the way the car looked. just give yourself up. turn yourself in. there's a lot of people out there that is hurt. >> horrible. that was knbc's beverly white reporting. police are looking for two men that they say were in the car at the time of the incident. northeast pennsylvania is breathing a sigh of relief. the first weekend in november, and celebrated halloween after a manhunt of nearly two months. eric frein is in custody. >> i can't even explain what i'm feeling right now. this is awesome. we are so proud of our

pennsylvania state police. >> we were afraid to go outside or do anything, and so this is amazing. we're waiting for this day. >> u.s. marshals captured frein in an abandoned airplane hangar. what are law enforcement saying how frein was able to evade them for nearly two months? >> that is really the million dollar question. officials are beginning to get some answers. now, they do stress this is an on going investigation, but they believe that frein idealized empty homes and abandoned structures like that airplane hang hangar, and in some of the hidden caches of food supplies were also hidden in the woods. for all of the fear he caused in the community, the arrest went down peacefully with no shots fired, and officials say he

followed commands after they discovered him of a grid sweep of the area, including the hangar. they took him into custody in the patrol car and handcuffs of the trooper he is accused of killing. he is in court on nine counts including first-degree murder. there will be no bail, and prosecutors, alex, do say they are going after the death penalty in this case. >> so i know halloween was something that was cancelled, all the kids, the families were so concerned about the safety, but it was restored, right? what are they saying about this return to normalcy? >> yeah, halloween was restored just in time, and they were able to have their annual parade, and trick-or-treaters had been told not to go out, and hunting season is back on for the areas

that were shut down during the search, and turkey season is set to begin today. for this community, it's a huge sigh of relief as they get back to their normal lives. they don't have this hanging over their head anymore. we were chatting with people about what it means for them, and they said it has had a huge affect on tourism, and a huge affect on the number of locals that want to go out at night, once the sun goes down. this will get life back to normal. you don't have to worry about schools being cancelled anymore. there's a huge outpouring of support for the law enforcement men and women that gave so many hours and days to this search. in fact, they hung a huge bed sheet outside the police barrac

barracks. it's highly unlikely that ferguson police officer will face charges in the shooting death of brown. the doj is reluctant to acknowledge it doesn't have a case because tensions are so high right now, and the grand jury continues to consider possible criminal charges, and they said this was an irresponsible report based on idle speculation. and the nurse is free to come and go as she polices as the judge denied the state's request to ban her from public places. the judge urged her to be sensitive to the fear of the public, even though it's not rational. >> i am sensitive. this is one of the reasons i am saying, this battle is not over, and we still need to continue

more than that, we had temperatures in the 50s and 60s acro anorth carolina linea and georgia. 2.5 inches of snow on the ground, and some areas could see 5 to 8 inches of snow here, and it's going to be cold. temperatures in the 20s here, and with the snow coming down, it's going to be that powdery kind of snow. it's going to be a wet snow. it's almost like right on cue with november first, we got the snowfall and it's going to be accumulating for many. we have an upper level snow across tennessee. warm air moving up on the east side of it,ing and snowfall, as we zoom in on north carolina, west of asheville, a little dry air working in here, but there's going to be more accumulation.

>> now, president obama will campaign for democrats in connecticut and pennsylvania. let me bring in our congressional reporter. >> good morning, alex. >> let's look at the current seven or so national races. the big picture here, what is conventional wisdom on senate control and what is the number? >> it's going barely to republicans, depending on whose forecast you look at, they could pick up anywhere from, as you said, maybe six, seven, nine seats, and that would give them at least 51 and control of the senate. there's a possibility that we will be waiting for two more seats from louisiana, and from here in georgia through early january, but all indications from the various forecasting models from the polls across the states that are in play suggest that this is a republican year for sure. >> you mentioned louisiana, and the democratic senator there,

she is defending comments she made to chuck todd. here is what she told him. >> to be very honest with you, the south has not always been the friendliest place for appear raw conamericans, and it's a difficult time for the president to present himself in a positive light as a leader, and it's not a good place for women to present ourselves, and so we have had to work harder on that, but i believe people trust me, i believe, really they do, to trust me to do the right thing for the state. >> the latest polls show her seven points behind her republican challenge jur. what is the dynamic in that state? how do you think the comments will play? >> well, kudos to chuck. he got her to say publicly what a lot of democrats have been saying privately in the last two years, and the conditions there,

it could be difficult for democrats to hold their seat. and then the fact that there has been a moratorium on offshore drilling since the bp disaster, and that's a huge concern and that continues to make the president's policies unpopular with people there. it's a jungle primary, and you have a three-led race right now. nobody likely to get 50% there. there will be a runoff later. and congressman cassidy appears to be investing senator landrieu, where is why they believe hope is lost, despite her family's pedigree and despite that she has served the state. she essentially acknowledges that in the interview with chuck, and that's probably the way it will tkpwe. >> what is happening in iowa? it reads democrats fear iowa

slipping away. what is the dynamic at play here? >> you know, today is saturday, right, alex? if you go back to tuesday or wednesday, democrats were feeling great and republicans were feeling bad, and today the republicans are feeling great and the democrats bad. the reason republicans feel so good is because while early voting has always benefited democrats in the hawkeye state, this year they feel they have turned out more republicans than ever before. and joanie becomes the first woman to become elected statewide in iowa. she has a huge lead. that's part of why republicans feel confident, they feel she came out of nowhere, and potentially she could have a broad national following if only

because she is a republican from iowa, and all the republicans presidential candidates need to spend time there over the next two years. >> if republicans do take control of the senate, does that insure two more years of gridlock in the nation's capital or not? >> you talk to republicans they say no because they will start to move legislation that has been bumping up across the senate, and he will get it to the president's desk, and even if he vetoes it they can say we tried, we tried to ease the regulatory birurdens in this country, and in some cases the president could go along with it and it could help him and his legacy. you have a closely and bitterly divided congress, and you have several republicans serving in congress who are going to go off and start running for president by next august at the latest. i think it's going to be difficult for things to get done in a meaningful way. given the fact that the

the ground but not in flight. captain kelly, thank you so much for being here. >> you are welcome. >> virgin galactic was planning to begin these commercial flights next year. how big of a setback is this? put this in perspective? >> it's a pretty big setback. they have been working with the new hybrid rocket motor for sometime and had challenges with it, and this was the first test flight with the fuel mixture, and they are going to have to pick up the pieces, and let the debris and the evidence tell the story of what happened and figure out where the -- where the anomaly was, and then to, you know, redesign or reengineer or, you know, come up with a new plan going forward. let me point out that i don't think it was actually any evidence of an explosion. you mentioned an explosion. we do know there was a form of catastrophic failure, so unless that changed overnight, i don't think that's necessarily the

case. >> i think we meant to be quoting an eyewitness, the gentleman that took the picture, but he was thousands of miles below. when you mention the fuel, it was a plastic-based fuel. how different is that? is that be the culprit in all of this? >> it could be. that's one of the first places you look, whether it's the engine or fuel tank, but it also could be primary structure. these vehicles operate at extremes of, you know, speed and temperature and pressure, so there's a lot going on, and, you know, there's hundreds, if not thousands of ways a vehicle like this can fail. >> you were a test pilot and you have flown in different types of aircrafts, and deadly accidents like this, as tragic as they are, are they almost expected when you are grasping at

something like this when they are so revolutionary? >> you try to make sure they don't happen, and if you look at early aviation and test pilots, and test pilots, say, at edward's air force base, they were trying to break the sound barrier, pushing the aviation envelope. virgin galactic is trying to build a vehicle to routinely take people up into space, and that's a difficult thing to do. you expect challenges and pumps in the road, and you try to do whatever is possible to make sure there is no loss of life, but inevitably, it does happen sometimes. >> you have been in the cockpit of a plane you were testing for the first time. what goes through your mind? i am curious on a personal note, what drives a pilot to take the incredible risks? >> well, they are exciting jobs, you know, and they are challenging jobs, and people, i

think -- there are a lot of people out there that like a challenge, and for a pilot, one of the greatest challenges to test a new vehicle. in this case, test a vehicle that is going to go into space. the space shuttle only through 135 flights. there were no prior test flights before the first flight, so for me being a test pilot and having an opportunity to fly the space shuttle was an incredible experience. these guys that are climbing in space ship 2, they have -- this might be the highlight of their career to have this opportunity, and they prepared incredibly for this and the engineering team behind those folks is really top notch. richard has hired some great engineers, and some great pilots to do this. >> yeah, you mention the highlight of a person's career, and people that paid a quarter of a million dollars to see the

curvature of the other, and to be in outer space, and do you think that's the highlight of their life? >> i met some of the passengers, and i met passenger number 600, i think she was, a day or two after she put down her deposit and she was excited to have this opportunity. hopefully she hangs in there. i think, you know, most of these people will. when they sign up to go on this kind of a trip, i think they all realize that, you know, that there are going to be challenges along the way. i explained this to this person. but, you know, virgin galactic can figure it out and recover from this, move on, and it's a setback for the timeline, but there is nothing here that they are trying to do that is impossible, so i am pop toptimi. >> thank you so much, captain

feet off the street that is behind me here, a little ways past that roadblock, and standing out here this morning are a couple members of the national guard, and 80 members of the national guard have been out here since yesterday really, patrolling and making sure that they are limiting access to the street behind me. they want to make sure if there are any evacuations, residents can get out safely and they can make it out with cars blocking their paths. at this point, the next critical piece of infrastructure that could be affected is the main highway here. the lava is about half a mile from there. even though the flow has been put on a pause, you can say there is still activity, and the lava flow is expected to resume. people here are ready and have been preparing, and officials are in close contact letting them know where the flow stands. you might also notice, it's

pouring, and rain is not going to top this thing, the lava is too powerful. >> you walked on some of the lava -- grant it, not the hot lava. >> way up the slope. >> that was incredible. it was still hot, right? >> yeah, it was hot. yeah, that's where some of the activity is happening, the breakouts they are seeing. the real impact is the front line, because that's what is close to homes. again, 480 feet from the street, but close to a couple structures. it burned another one recently. that's the concern here, and that's why officials are trying to make sure they are keeping people safe. >> thank you so much. the official start of winter is about seven weeks from now, but wintry weather is slamming parts of the south this weekend. and the weather channel's mike seidel is on sugar mountain in

north carolina. >> it has been snowing and blowing all night, and once the arctic front blew threw, we had four or five inches of snow on the ground, and the powdery snow just blows around like dust. because the temperature is so cold, we are down to 22, and the windchill is 5 above zero, and not too shabby for the first day of november. and taking you back to yesterday, the worst blofloodinn the lakefront there, lake shore drive, the waves lapped over and they had to shut down a major part of the thorough flare, and flights cancelled at o'hare because of the winds that gusted up to 70 miles per hour, and over the middle of the lake they had 20 footers. and to the north, lake-effect snow, and the michigan, snow, and all the cold air overt lakes and you get the snowfall for the first time, and the winter

driving kicks in. back here on the mountain top, we will have snow blowing all day. i just talked to an owner, and he got the snow guns on. they anticipate opening tomorrow morning for the first time in the season, and this would be the second earliest open on record, and we have snow as far south as atlanta, georgia. >> temperatures in parts of the deep south expected to drop into the 30s today. a mad dash of campaigning kicking off across colorado this weekend, and three days until election day. udall is fighting to keep his seat. our political correspondent is joining us. >> reporter: republicans would say they have the advantage, and they are leading at this point for mail-in ballots. but, you know, i have to say, i

have been on the trail with republicans and democrats in the last couple of days, and in some ways there's a enthusiasm edge among democrats, and udall has had supporters out who are a little more enthusiastic, i would say, than those with major surrogates. the governor's race is also closer than expected. the republican is in a close race with a democratic governor, so that could be a wildcard in the senate race. now, in the final days, both sides are trying to appeal to particularly women voters and hispanics, and it's a match-up of ground game against ground game to turn out those kinds of voters. republicans are late in the game, sending out a mailer saying president obama has not done enough to help on immigration reform. that said, republicans have a long way to go from where democrats were in turning out

their voters. the obama campaign organized here twice in 2008, and 2012, and the real test for republicans is going to come on election day to see whether or not they can win in a blue state. joining me now with more is lilly adams, the communications director. lily, good morning, i am sure you have your running shoes on for these last few days. >> yes, most of us do. we will be focused on a couple things. one is making sure we turnout not just our base, but the new voters we repbgistered in a numr of states across the country, and it's all about turnout. but the second thing is that we will be making sure voters are go into the booth, and i think democrats who have fought for opportunity at every turn are going to be the answer to the question, while republicans have continued to obstruct progress. >> well, on that note in terms of who is going to the booth and

why they are going there, this week the white house indicated it's considering granting protections to some ungranted documents to cut deportations, and the hispanic vote is a key demographic in key states, and some say it's pan dooring, the timing of this, what do you say? >> democrats have for years fought for comprehensive immigration reform, and republicans have blocked bills. most recently the senate passed a bipartisan immigration bill that would do enormous good for the economy and for the country, and they are on speaker boehner's desk, so any day he moves on that, we would be happy to join him. what is desire appointing is the president talked about ways he can act well within his job description to help the economy and to fix our immigration system, and what we have heard from the republican side is calls for impeachment or threats to shut down the government, so

i think the contrast is clear go into the final days. >> here is another key for democrats, and there's a new poll that finds among likely voters ages 18 to 29, there's 51% that want a republican-controlled house, and that's to 40% for a democratic controlled house. this is just one poll, but that sense if it's reflective of the truth, what has happened for democrats? >> that poll does not reflect what we have seen in other national polls or in the states, and what you see with millennials, they are pro-marriage equality, and they have believe the government has affordable access to health care, and they believe in investing in infrastructure and the government making it easier to go to college.

so i feel confident that, again, millennials will vote on policies and democrats represent where their policy heads are at. >> there are also critics that say it's appearing that one tactic democrats are trying to get out the vote is by threatening voters. in connecticut, and new york, the party is sending out mailers, and it shows where they voted in the past, and are you concerned about the interpretation of this? >> i have seen tactics from both parties to try and turn out their base. i think, though, if you look at what the fundamental difference between the two parties in the election, democrats are urging people to be more part of the process while republicans throw up barriers at every turn. i feel confident that we at the dnc are running ads in a number of state, 14 states across the country, to make sure folks know

new poll numbers show just how important it will be for latina voters to show up on tuesday. exhibit "a" the senate race in colorado because the poll show republican congressman core 80 gardner against mark udall 46 to 39. and a separate poll found 48% of hispanic voters favor udall and 26 favor gardner. joining me now is the pew research hispanic trends project. good morning to you. we've heard about anger in the latino community about the deportation relief and the undocumented immigrants but your poll found that hispanic voters across the country pretty evenly split on this. is the anger about the delay is that a false narrative? >> well, certainly there are many latino voters who are upset about the delay. 9% of them, for example, say that they are angry that the president didn't make any decision and we found a significant share are

disappointed as well but as you noted it's somewhat split and it's no surprise. for many latino voters while it is an issue for them immigration and immigration reform, for some others, other issues may be more important like the economy and jobs, for example. the results kind of show there's a lot of nuance in the latino community about this. >> motivation, though, that's certainly a big motivation for the democrats because if latino voters stay home that could certainly hurt. what did your polling find? >> we found there's just as much motivation to vote this year as in 2010. if you take a look at the numbers of people who say among latino registered voters are you absolutely certain you're going to vote? we found this year it is 53% and it's about the same statistically speaking and they are giving just as much thought to the election this year as in 2010. >> let's look to the pew latest numbers in terms of how have democrats' advantage among latinos how has it changed in 2010? is it better or is it worse?

>> it's a little bit worse. we've seen some slipping in terms of latino support for congressional candidates in their districts. today about 57% of latino registered voters say they would vote for the democrat -- they're going to vote for the democrat in their district today. that's down from about two-thirds who said the same in 2010 but we also see a decline in political affiliation and even fewer latinos saying the democratic party is the party who has more concern for the community. >> i'm kurepious about underpolling of hispanics in colorado, rachel maddow made a point about this yesterday. let's take a listen. >> what democrats in the state think is wrong in the polling there it undersamples latino voters and it's a problem that is not getting better over time. there was a denver post poll that showed gardner over udall but it was only land line phones only conducted in english and they only talked to a couple dozen latino respondents altogether. >> i know your poll was national and didn't reference colorado specifically but what happens when a group is underpolled like
