and vows to still take executive action on immigration reform. the speech led bit co-to describe him as defiant with the hill calling him unrepentant and "the washington post"'s dana mill banks said his tone made him seem numb to the results. >> obviously republicans had a good night and they deserve credit for running good campaigns. beyond that i'll leave it to all of you and the professional pundits to pick through yesterday's results. to everyone who voted, i want you to know that hear you, to the two-thirds of voters who chose not to participate in the process yesterday, i hear you too. i think that every election is a moment for reflection and, you know, i think that everybody in this white house is going to look and say, all right, what do we need to do differently but the principles that we're fighting for -- the things that motivate me every single day and

motivate my staff, those aren't going to change. >> but president obama is extending an olive branch to senator mitch mcconnell. >> actually i would enjoy having some kentucky bourbon with mitch mcconnell. i don't know what his preferred drink is but, you know, my ai t interactions with mitch mcconnell, he's always been very straightforward to me. to his credit he has never made a promise that he couldn't deliver and, you know, he knows the legislative process well. >> and yet republican senator bob corker is predicting they're unlikely to hit up happy hour together. senator mcconnell and he have penned an op-ed saying with their new-found power they will focus on the jobs and economy and look for opportunities where they exist.

many believe it's the keystone xl pipeline and during a news conference mcconnell seemed to be at ease where there was work on tax reform and no shutdowns or defaults but the senate would be run far differently from his predecessor. >> earlier today i got a call from the president also from senator reid and the speaker and ted cruz too. which i thought you'd be interested in. i've been called by three prominent democrats since last night, prominent democrats. they're anxious to be relevant again. i think we ought to start with the view that maybe there are some things we can agree on to make progress with the country. interest an institutional point of view, the senate needs to be fixed. >> the relationship i had with the president has always been cordial. i mean there's not a personality problem here or anything like that.

liked and will be an uphill battle and she accused bill cassidy of voting against hurricane isaac relief in a hard-hit neighborhood. as we look in virginia, nbc news called mark warner the apparent winner but the margin is still extremely close. we're talking about 16,000 votes. and the governor's races, alaska, still too close to call with independent bill walker leading republican sean parnell and we have john hickenlooper of colorado managing to survive a challenge from his opponent as did dana malloy against his republican opponent and pat quinn now conceding to bruce rauner. carlesha freeland-gaither, the 22-year-old woman violently abducted in philadelphia last weekend, she has been safely rescued. now, this case came to national news when this shocking video, it's surveillance footage of her abduction was released monday and atf agents found her and her kidnapper allegedly in his car

across state lines in a parking lot. authorities tracked that vehicle through gps installed by the dealer because the suspect had such bad credit. well, barnes who has a criminal history and apparently attacked gaither at random will face federal charges. she is listed in good condition expected to recover from her injuries and last night her mom thanked the detective who promised her that he would find her daughter. >> he sat in my kitchen in front of me and told me i'm bringing your daughter home. i'm bringing your daughter home. he said, no, i'm bringing your daughter home and he brought my baby home. >> thank you. >> he brought her right home. >> good job. >> thank you. >> they were so glad for a happy ending but scary, that surveillance video. news on the marriage equality front. supporters celebrating a victory in the state of missouri. gay and lesbian companies applying for marriage licenses.

the state's attorney is appealing this decision but did not ask the state supreme court to issue a stay. they would be the 33rd state where they exist. we shift our focus to business. wall street hits new record highs after the gop's midterm sidal wave. the dow closing at more than 17,400 points. the s&p also hitting an all-time high with over 2,000 and the nasdaq was the only index to somehow buck the trend finishing lower but as you see there, not by very much. cnbc's geoff cutmore joins us with more. encouraging trend that we're seeing after the midterms. was that expected? >> yeah, absolutely. i think the polls running into this already told that the markets what they needed to know that we would have a split in the political system in the united states effectively the house would be republican and the president would be a democrat and since 1945 that has generated positive stock market

performance. the markets like the idea that you have a more business friendly washington so we saw all the major indices as you say moving into positive territory. i have to say cnbc has been doing work on some of the risks for 2015 and there are some geopolitical issues that it's worth bearing in mind. isis seems to be gaining strength in recruitment. the russians continue to testate to in the air over europe and, of course, the north koreans have now launched this soviet-era nuclear submarine so just some stories to keep an eye on for 2015. while we're on the subject of stories that are interesting and controversial, let me just mention thanksgiving here. some retailers are treading on hallowed ground when it comes to opening on thanksgiving. but those who are not are making a point of putting that out there in the market and saying,

hey, we're observing the sanctity if you like of thanksgiving and staying closed and companies like costco and home depot are on that list so about two dozen retailers remaining closed while we see macy's, sears and kohl's saying they aren't going to open. no decision from walmart and target. it generates controversy in your neck of the woods. >> takes the pressure and panic off. i like the idea they remain closed. if you feel like others are out there and missing something you feel like you need to be out there and get in that mess. i'd ray stay at home with my feet up in a turkey coma. geoff, great to see you. still ahead on "way too early" if you thought michael jordan was tough on the president's golf game, wait till you hear what president obama said in response. later, we're going to meet alex from target. he is the bag boy that broke the twitter. >> random girs that never met before came in and showed me my twitter page and it had like

from nbc. >> did do you any p.e.d.s? >> no. >> reporter: he has always denied using performance-enhancing drugs since 2004 but behind closed doors with immunity, nbc news has learned he told federal officials a very different story. at a meeting last january with dea agents and prosecutors investigating a south florida clinic he admitted to buying banned drugs, $12,000 worth a month and injecting them into his stomach and claimed to use his cousin to help keep it secret paying him $900,000 for his silence. >> this is rock bottom for alex rodriguez. this was somebody who was a three-time league mvp, a world series champion and now on the same level as lance armstrong. >> 18 days before his alleged confession an arbitrator ruled rodriguez would have to sit out the entire 2014 season for the scandal. he responded then with another

denial saying, i did not use performance-enhancing substances and authorized to prove it i will take this to federal court but dropped it just weeks later. all right, so that was ron mott reporting. he has three years left on his contract. owed 61 million bucks. >> let's go, yankees. >> there we go. former baltimore ravens running back ray rice arrived for an appeal on his ban. he contends the league subjected him to double jeopardy and violated his due process and when his two-game suspension extend after his elevator video surfaced the league said this video was new evidence and that's why they had to give this ban. the rises are expected to testify separately. roger goodell was the first witness called. jeffrey miller and the ravens' president are expected to testify as well. president obama is firing back at miking jordan after the basketball legend had some not so flattering things to say

all right, so earlier in the show we recapped president obama's press conference yesterday where he vowed to beat the repeal of obamacare. if you want to sound smart tell your friends president obama vetoed just two bills in his six years in office, the fewest of any president since james garfield who was only in office for 200 days, the all-time record holder, fdr vetoed 635 bills during his presidency. that's a lot of veto stamps. let's check in with louis, a lot of information that deals with music but start with an old american idol. >> a strong cooler. "american idol" runner-up clay aiken will star in a new television series on his failed congressional bid. esquire network went behind the
