getting out of that warm bed is not easy. bone chilling cold outside. right now five weeks from winter, a deep freeze is bearing down on two-thirds of the u.s.,er and then there's the snow. a record breaking eight inches, in fact, in south bend, indiana. looks gorgeous on tv but slick roads caused several accidents. in nearby ohio a rare sight and sound. that noise, thundersnow. it is rare but lightning can strike when temperatures and airflow are just right even in colder seasons. now to montana. a rancher had to bring in a little calf to protect it from the frigid weather. many in the northeast might need a blanket soon too. if you haven't left the house since last night that cold weather has arrived on your front door step. bill karins will join us in a few minutes with forecast. new this morning the president taking on a big domestic issue on his overseas trip to asia, the topic the fate of the keystone x lpipeline project.

>> we should judge this pipeline based on whether or not it accelerates climate change or whether it helps the american people with their energy costs and their gas prices. >> nbc news white house correspondent kristen welker is live with the president. kristen that's not a good stein for republicans? >> reporter: that's right. president obama count escape the battles back home even here at myanmar. today during a joint press conference with the pro democracy leader he was asked about the controversial keystone plain. republicans plan to relight. he reiterated past comments saying he wants to let a state department review play out but also made some of his strongest comments to date about the keystone pipeline pushing back on the notion it would create jobs or significantly lower gas prices. now he also doubled down on his

vow to pass immigration reform without congress before the end of the year. republicans vowing to fight him tooth and nail on that. president obama is here in myanmar to talk about the bourgeoning efforts of brokecy here which have stalled. park geun-hye has got some criticism. president obama reiterated his support for her saying democracy is difficult and can be a slow process. from here president obama heads to brisbane, australia for a global economic summit. back here at home immigration showdown is brewing. president obama is ready to go it alone. his plan could happen by next week. and the president says he'll flex his executive powers to get it done. now if it does happen, 5 million illegal immigrants with kids who were born in the u.s. can stay. this morning the president had a warning for riled up republicans.

>> i indicated to speaker boehner several months ago that if, in fact, congress failed to act i would use all the lawful authority that i possess to try to make the system work better. and that's going to happen. >> we're going to fight the president tooth and nail if he continues down this path. >> also under the president's plan border security would be increased. a stunning new report could reignite the debate over gun control. the brady center found more than 1.7 million children live in homes with unlocked and loaded guns. the report comes on the heels of yet another gun accident just last night involving two small children. they were left home alone with an unlocked and loaded gun. according to the brady center 20,000 children were shot in 2011. 2700 of them died. firearms are the second leading cause of death among children and teens. the advocacy group also identified eight states with the highest death rates, and they are all states that the brady

center to have found loose gun laws. a new head shaking report finally answers a major question, how did an armed intruder get into the white house last september? peter alexander has more. >> reporter: this is the home video of fence jumper omar gonzalez running across the white house north lawn in september. a damning review by the department of homeland security blames the secret service for the failure. the report found secret service alarm systems and radios failed to work properly and that many of the officer on duty didn't see gonzalez armed with a knife as he scaled the fence. among the failures the actions of a uniformed secret service officer with an attack dog who was not listening to his two way radio his ear piece was out and a stand by radio was left in his locker. instead he was talking on a cell phone and only saw gonzalez after witnessing another officer

running towards him. >> the secret service is set for redundancy. we can accept a couple of human errors but not this many. >> reporter: gonzalez overtook a secret service officer. he barrelled past the guard, turned left and ran into the east room. he ran the entire length of the white house to the other end of the east room before he was tackled by a heavily armed counter assault agent near the doorway to the green room. congress's reaction was swift. >> i just would like to see it cleaned up to go back to the organization that we all admired and respected so much. >> that was nbc's peter alexander reporting. geologists are monitoring those two sink holes that opened up in florida this week. a big worry is that both sink holes are connected. the entire area remains taped off. one of the sink holes is in a driveway and it did swallow up an entire car. the woman who lives in that

sports. thursday night football in jeopardy? a bizarre theft occurred a few days before thursday night's bills/dolphins game. a multimillion dollar media truck was stolen. police were able to track down the 18 wheeler with the equipment inside. but the cab still missing. to thursday night football. the quarterback threw for two late touchdowns. that helped the dolphins break a two game losing streak with a win over the bills. the mavericks nochd the biggest win ever with a 123-70 victory over the winless 76ers. that is a whopping 53 point smackdown. >> catch and shoot. that's all you got. yes! yes! yes! >> it is a buzzer beater finish in memphis. the grizzlies came from 26 points down to beat the kings

all right. alaska, the sun doesn't rise until 11:48 and they have 2 1/2 hours of daylight. they are at 31 degrees in barrow, alaska. atlanta you are three degrees colder than barrow, alaska. all this cold air is supposed to be up in the arctic circle but it's not. it will stay cold for another week. the cold blast is with us.

wind chill 25 in new orleans. 16 in atlanta. so the first time the southeast is really feeling the cold outbreak. as we go through the weekend forecast we'll watch the snow that's now today in the rockies heading out to the central plains, kansas, iowa, missouri. chicago saturday night maybe one or two inches of snow. then we'll look at just rain in the southeast as we go into sunday. the next blast of really cold air betty comes down the great lakes sunday night and monday, it will arrive on the east coast on tuesday. northeast will be by far much colder with this outbreak. >> not like barrow, alaska. >> bar remarks alaska is 31. they are wearing shares and t-shirts. >> you don't want to get out of bed because it's only daylight for two hours. stories making news this friday morning. these aren't real fights taking place in a ferguson, missouri, church basement, they're actually learning tactics to defend themselves in case they get into confrontations with police. both sides are preparing for possible riots after a grand

could be similar to last we're when the roll out experience remember those major website glitches. >> reporter: who could forget. seriously when you look at the republicans coming into congress, i mean everyone across the board in the republican party has indicated they are not going to back down on trying to at least repeal parts of obamacare and this, if you think longer term from a policy standpoint, betty, this could actually, i think, give some more leeway to that and this could be the launching point for that larger debate which i think more generally speaking is why the administration is nervous about this. >> i want to shift gears to elizabeth warren, the rock star within the party. she's insisting she's not running for president in 2016 but wealthy campaign donors are unwilling to take no for an answer. could she be a game changer if she does run? >> reporter: definitely a game changer if she does run. what's interesting about senator warren she represents a part of the democratic party that's

good morning i'm thomas roberts. it's friday, november 14th. welcome to "way too early." that from, the presidential one will face the test as their loved ones talking to it out. we start at 1600 pennsylvania avenue. a new report has been released about white house security and breach that happened there in september. department of homeland security report out now faults secret service agents for nearly a dozen performance organizational and technical failures. those errors allowed omar gonzalez to jump the white house fence with a knife, run across the north lawn and enter the first family's home. he then overpowered a female secret service officer. he ran across the 80-foot east room before being apprehended. the report states the secret service alarm systems and radios did not work properly and that many of the officers on duty didn't see gonzalez as he climbed that nine-foot fence. a uniformed secret service officer with an attack dog was allegedly talkingn
