tv   Way Too Early  MSNBC  November 14, 2014 2:30am-3:01am PST

2:30 am
it's friday, november 14th. welcome to "way too early." that from, the presidential one will face the test as their loved ones talking to it out. we start at 1600 pennsylvania avenue. a new report has been released about white house security and breach that happened there in september. department of homeland security report out now faults secret service agents for nearly a dozen performance organizational and technical failures. those errors allowed omar gonzalez to jump the white house fence with a knife, run across the north lawn and enter the first family's home. he then overpowered a female secret service officer. he ran across the 80-foot east room before being apprehended. the report states the secret service alarm systems and radios did not work properly and that many of the officers on duty didn't see gonzalez as he climbed that nine-foot fence. a uniformed secret service officer with an attack dog was allegedly talking on a cell phone instead of listening to a

two way radio and his stand by radio was in his locker. lawmakers quickly reacted to this report including house judiciary committee chairman. he said the review reads as a comedy of errors by the u.s. secret service and confirms that fundamental reform is need toimd prove both the security of the white house grounds and staff training. a spokesman for the secret service said the issues in the report have either been corrected or are in the process of being changed. at the center of senator mitch mcconnell's argument for re-election was the opportunity to become the majority leader and now that is a true reality. despite some senators refusing to say who they back, mcconnell was elected unanimously. john boehner and the rest of the house leadership were easily re-elected. things were more complicated. harry reid was elected senate minority leader but political reports he had to convince some skeptical democrats he would be more open on policy and message. some members reportedly tried to delay this vote and at least six
2:32 am
defected. when asked if he shouldered some of the blame for the senate flipping reid said does anybody in nebraska know me or kansas. i don't think it had much to do with me. i don't think most people know who i am. he created a position for elizabeth warren as a policy adviser and that's a nod to the progressive wing of the party. pell approximately was elected again but a long rebuttal when a reporter asked her if she considered stepping aside. >> what was the day that any of you said to mitch mcconnell when they lost the senate three times in a row, aren't you getting a little old, mitch. shouldn't you step aside? have you ever asked him that question? have you ever asked, have any of you ever asked him that question. so i don't understand why that question should even come up. i'm here as long as my members want me to be here. it's just as interesting as a woman to see how many times that question is asked of a woman and how many times that question is
2:33 am
never asked of mitch mcconnell. i say that kind of thinking i have a mission for women on this score. when we won the house, and that was largely an initiative that i started around 2000 to take us to a place where we would win the house, that was a big thing. i was never on "time" magazine even though i was the first woman -- wasn't that a curiosity the republicans win boehner is on the front of "time." mitch mcconnell wins. isn't there a pattern here. as i said who i am does not depend on any of that with all due respect to all of you but as a woman, it's like -- is there a message here? >> so another big story we're following four this morning, president obama said that he'll move to overhaul parts of immigration and its system by the end of the year and it's already raising the prospect of a government shutdown within circles of the gop.
2:34 am
the "new york times" reports the white house plan would prevent the deportation of as many as 5 million undocumented immigrants and reform the role of law enforcement to add more security and allow parents of children born in the u.s. to get work documents. the plan would boost opportunities to more legal immigrants with expertise in technology. house democrats one after another called on the president to take decisive action even if it came without full congressional backing. >> if lincoln can sign the emancipation proclamation, if truman can sign order desegregating the military, i believe president obama can sign doc a, expanding opportunities for persons who are living in the shadows of life. there will be many who are angry but i don't think god will be mad. >> so republicans are threatening a shutdown saying they want to hold up the budget unless there's language restricting the president's proposal.
2:35 am
it's creating an early test for the republican party's leadership. >> we'll not be shutting the government down, threatening to default on the national debt. will not be shutting the government down or threatening to default on the national debt. >> we're going to fight the president tooth and nail if he continues down this path. this is the wrong way to govern. all the options are on the table. we're having discussions with our members and no decision has been made as to how we will fight this. >> the keystone pipeline is set for a vote today and the house is nearing the 60 votes to pass it. tissue was fast tracked in large part due to the louisiana runoff between mary landrieu and bill cassidy. both trying to show they can provide for the state. supporters say it will create thousands of american jobs. some analysts suggest the falling price of crude means its
2:36 am
market value may be less than it costs to transport and produce here in the u.s. so the president who retains his veto power weighed in on this issue this morning while on his trip in asia. >> as a policy matter, my government believes that we should judge this pipeline based on whether or not it accelerates climate change or whether it helps the american people with their energy costs and gas prices. and i have to constantly push back against this idea that somehow the keystone pipeline is either this massive jobs bill for the united states, or is somehow lowering gas prices. understand what this project is. it is providing the ability of canada to pump their oil, send it through our land down to the gulf where it will be sold every
2:37 am
where else. it doesn't have an impact on u.s. gas prices. >> so we'll turn the news to overseas where there's troubling new developments in the campaign to defeat islamic state militants. isis is joining forces with an al qaeda linked group in syria. the militants met at a farmhouse last week and in that meeting they agreed to stop fighting each other. an audiotape from the leader of isis is talking about erupting volcanoes of jihad. it's claimed abu bakr al-baghdadi was injured or killed in an air strike. now on capitol hill the nation's top general said up to 80,000 iraqi troops will be needed to reclaim territory that was seized by isis and is open u.s. to military advisers taking on a greater role.
2:38 am
>> i'm not predicting at this point that i would recommend that those forces in mosul along the border would need to be accompanied by u.s. forces but we're considering it. any expansion of that would be equally modest. i don't foresee a circumstance when it would be in our interest to take this fight on ourselves with a large military contingent. >> we'll turn to business news for you now and another record day for the dow. no thanks to twitter. the company's stock closed down nearly 6% after its debt was hit with a junk rating from the s&p. so, explain why the s&p went with this junk rating. >> reporter: it's not making money. it's about when is twitter going to make money. when are they going to go discretionary cash flow positive and making a lot of acquisitions as well. s&p didn't ask if they wanted a rating they gave them one
2:39 am
unsolicited. they had a debt still back in september and saying they are worried they will not generate positive cash flow until 2016. like many of these big tech companies in a growth phase the company isn't making money. what is unclear whether s&p did this in 140 characters or less. now elsewhere some of the titans of the market are moving. apple continues to second lie date its position as number one. over 113 bucks. microsoft now, a fraction above now exxon in term of market cap. 408.9 billion is what microsoft is worth. brilliant rally in 2014. exxon, no surprise for anyone looking at the oil price, oil price had a 30% row, and
2:40 am
incidentally it seceded the second spot to a tech company. >> we look at the dow another record day and this is thanks in large part to walmart. what are we expecting to close out today. another banner day. >> reporter: we should collective bargainingate what's happened to walmart in many ways. it's taken them seven quarters to grow. if you look at the company stripping out new store openings this is like for like sales. they grew for the first time in seven quarters. they got to $119 billion of sales from new and existing stores. they are happy about it. there was a caveat and that caveat is there's a vicious price car going on with walmart and across the whole of online and indeed the whole of main street as well. the battle going forward with the online retailers which put a little bit of a shadow in these numbers, cut the top end of their forecast by a little bit.
2:41 am
the numbers themselves very good and the market celebrated with a 4.7% rally in walmart stores. >> have a great weekend, sir. big question for you. could changes be made for the fda's blood donation policy. we got this report from the "l.a. times" saying the food and drug administration will decide whether to lift the ban on having gay men donate blood. this was back in the late '70s and early '80ss. australia and canada ended their bans. this brings us to our twitter question this morning. should the fda overturn the ban on gay men donating blood. do you think the science supports it. our young crew thought maybe our viewers didn't know this ban still exists. let us know what your thoughts are. our handi ining "way too early."
