decision of the grand jury that could decide whether to indict darren wilson in the death of michael brown. intentions are building. 30 protesters gathered to call for an indictment. police were not far away. how are police responding? >> the protests are peaceful and happens every night. the crowd of protesters that gather in front of the police station. the crowd was the largest we had seen. there were five folk who is were arrested. we saw the police donning their helmets and shields. something that we have not seen. five folks arrested. no violent slashes like what we

saw in the aftermath of the shooting itself. as you indicated, what's happening right now is waiting. everyone continues to wait on that grand jury. we might get an announcement today or tomorrow. we reach out and ask. as you know, schools have been told they will likely get three hours new. 24 hours on the weekend. we don't know much else. everyone here is waiting on word of a decision. of an announcement from the grand jury. >> that's the big piece of information that folks are waiting on to see whether or not an daumt will come down. what about the underlying racial issues with the lack of trust with the police. is there a sense that some of

those issues are being addressed? >> unemployment with regard to young people who live in the area. that is something that is supposed to be addressed by the commission that governor nixon said and all of them with close ties to the community. most folks said it led to the aftermath. it led to the violent clashes. it's not going to have any dealings with a decision.

we are not going to be responding to the issues that folks in ferguson have been complaining about for sometime. it's an important distinction. >> nbc's craig melvin, thank you so much. and back to the top story in washington, president obama is set to announce executive action on immigration in a prime time address tonight. we are already hearing details of what exactly this action will entail and it will have a wide reach. four million would be able to apply for a special program that would protect them from deportation and allow them to work here legally. another one million would be protected through other measures to overhaul immigration and that includes expansion of the dreamer's program. republicans are promising to respond when the new congress convenes in january. >> if he imposes his will on the

country, we are considering a variety of options, but make no mistake. when the people take their seats, they will act. >> great having you. >> can we expect the president to make the case for why he has to act on his own? it really puts his challenge into perspective. it's a process problem more than a policy one. 48% of americans oppose him taking this action versus 38% who support it. when asked whether you support it, that goes up when you are told what that entails. in a lot of ways, president

number of communities. if you can start by responding to senator coburn with concerns over acts of anarchy and violence. is that something that you expect to see in the wake of this announcement? >> with all due respect to the senator, no. i don't see that. are there strong feelings on this issue? yes. we can address this without going to that extreme. i don't see that myself. about 5 million immigrants could be affected. there 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country, specifically two groups that this plan could potentially leave out based on what we are hearing. that would be farm workers and the parents are so-called dreamers, the young immigrants who came here as children. are you disappointed that those groups are not always going to be included? >> i wish we had a bipartisan

legislative fix to immigration reform. >> he has flexibility on executive orders. they do have brought discretion, but there limits. he cannot cover everybody. that has to be congress. the president is going to do whatever he can within his authority like ronald reagan did. and just like president bush, the first they did when they issued an executive order to stop deportation of certain people that were about to get deported. writing about the president's executive order, this move would also make it much less likely that we will have immigration reform.

and is it your belief that the president's actions are making e form less likely? >> i have been here for a while and meanwhile, the people that oppose immigration said we need to build a wall and there was a fence that was put. you need to deport more people. they said we need more border patrol. we doubled the number. we have been making changes on the border. again, the next precedent can change because what the president will do is temporary. or congress can have an immigration reform and change the things we don't like for what the president will be doing later tonight.

they should use every tool here. do you expect that republicans could threaten a shut down over these actions? >> i hope two things happen. i hope there is not a shut down in government and they temperature down any rhetoric that might come out. on the appropriations, you see what happened. you play with fire and you get burned. i think now that they will have the majority, they want to show they can govern. by starting off before they get a majority to shut down the government, that would be a bad signal to send to the american public that they do have the majority and they cannot govern. there ways to have differences in policy. let's not shut down the government. >> i hope they are listening to you. thank you so much for your time. >> thank you, crystal. >> coming up, with president obama going it alone tonight, trying to fix the broken system,

let's talk through the history. two presidents have acted in a similar way on immigration in recent years. both republicans in 1987. we have ronald reagan to protect legalized immigrants. in 1990, george h.w. bush expanded the protections to family members of those legalized immigrants. why is it that you think president obama is facing such an incredible uproar when his actions are similar to what the presidents did? park are that's right. it's inconvenient truth to ted cruz that reagan and bush did something very similar. granted this is much larger in scope. it's more grandiose, but what you are dealing with here is politics. the tea party right is destroying anything barack obama does from day one. this immigration issue is near and dear to their hearts.

there is an anti-latino sentiment in parts of the american west and here is the president coming in as the savior to five million undocumented workers, maybe more in the end. they don't like it. they thought they won the big election and the president is coming with an executive order. the problem is, it is legal. all presidents do executive orders. what president obama is about to do is legal. it becomes a question of who doesn't like it and how far will the right go in trying to damage obama's accomplishment tonight. will they go so far as to shut down the government or not. >> right. this is much larger than what they did. other push back is what they did essentially cleaned up action that congress had taken where as

this president's actions are in lieu of going through a congress. what do you make of that push back? >> i understand the push back, but the truth is you have to look at the issue of particularly mexican immigration to the united states. during world war ii, we were begging people to come in and work jobs during the war in the united states. since then, we had ups and downs look at president obama alone. this is not a man who is weak on the border. they doubled security. a 700 mile fence. we were doubling people who are being deported. we have to know who is in the country and who is not. the only way is what the president is trying to do. put your hand up and who is here? it won't be funative, but we have to get control over the issue. it's grown and the president

warned over the summer, he started saying i'm going do this soon. we have to get a bill in congress. this is going to happen and it will be debated. it might go to court in a couple of states. it will probably be finally resolved by congress in sfept 17 after that presidential election when immigration will be back on the docket. what can history teach us about the impact of president obama's actions. how were reagan and hw's actions received in the latino community and the right argues by giving status to these undocumented immigrants that that's going to encourage more undocumented immigrants to come across. did we see that in response? >> there was response with the amnesty idea that they were giving amnesty. i edited the diaries and in the reagan world a lot. some thought he was a champion

and others thought what he did on the hard right was a failure of reagan. you will find the tea party not defending reagan or bush. they will say they were wrong. and he eventually took his own life unfortunately. i am remarried and i have a great family. it would have been completely irresponsible to bring another child untenable and unstable situation for quite a while. >> and deborah, what reactions have you gotten since you've come forward and been willing to share your story? >> you know, i share this story across the country. and what i have found is that every time i tell my story, someone tells me theirs. and what it says to me that there are -- if 1 in 3 of us has had about abortion or will have an abortion in our lifetime, then we all know someone who has had an abortion or will. and when you breakthrough the silence, when you breakthrough the stigma and are willing to share that story, women come forward and tell you about their own experiences. sometimes there are people that i've known all my life. sometimes there are people who are complete strangers.

but what's happens is that a culture of empathy, a community ensues, and we can breakthrough the sort of fear of judgment, and we can also stand up more effectively in support of safe abortion care. >> absolutely, deborah. thank you so much, and thank you for sharing that story. i know it takes a lot of courage to do to be able to do that. and stick around, we want to get your reaction to this next story even as women on a national level are seeking to stop the stigma surrounding abortion. on a state level, laws restricting abortion continue to be adopted, including alabama, which mandates that some go to court to make their case. our partners take us there. >> reporter: alabama's state motto is we dare defend our rights. as the battle over abortion rights heats up here, found some people with very different views of what those rights should be. >> we will show her these little

babies. this is seven weeks, eight, nine, and ten. >> in alabama, a minor who wants an abortion must prove they've received counseling on alternatives at a clinic such as this. minors must also get permission from a parent. girls too afraid to face their parents can ask a judge for permission. juliana taylor has represented over 60 girls who have asked a judge permission for an abortion. >> i remember a girl who told me she was going to have a mixed race baby and her daddy told her if she came home pregnant by a black man, that he would beat her and he would kill the baby. >> but now a new law enacted in april encourages judges to appoint lawyers for fetuses. >> i am a civil rights attorney, the greatest civil right of all is life itself. >> you understand what that means?

the fetus has been given the right to appeal a decision up to a higher court. >> for the first time ever, the new law also allows witnesses to testify against the girl. >> and that district attorney can ask questions. now we have someone who can cross-examine in an adversarial capacity if the little girl says i work very hard, make good grades call in a guidance counselor at the school. to see if the girl is telling the truth. tie up the decisions in the court. >> you now have other lawyers who can appeal that decision and say this little girl throws temper tantrums when she doesn't get her way. she doesn't spend her allowance wisely. the fetus is appealing. >> the crisis pregnancy centers are among the places that offer

the kind of counseling that minors are required to speak by law. >> we tell everyone we're not abortion clinic, but we have all the information that you would need this is a 12-week model that we give her to take home, we suggest adoption as an alternative. and we really promote that. >> i think what is most cruel is not to tell a young woman what the risk and liabilities of an abortion are. to wake up later and say, oh, my god. a child that could have been mine. >> i got a christmas card one year. it didn't have anything written in it. didn't have a signature. just initials. i don't know the name of the girl who sent it, but i know how i helped her. >> powerful stuff there.

when you hear laws like that are on the books that some young women have to go through the courts, why do you think the clock is being turned back on women's rights right now? >> i think there have been 30 years of antiabortion rhetoric that many women have experienced, and that silences our voices, makes us afraid, it's why we're coming and speaking out if we can't speak out about our own personal experiences and show our own lives and the families of are, then what's left is political rhetoric. in the absence, these are the types of laws passing across the country. >> i think that's so well said and your story is important. thank you so much. >> thank you. >> and thank you also to our partners for that report. and that wraps up things for this edition of "ronan farrow daily," thank you so much for joining me today. ronan will be back tomorrow.
