good morning, everyone. i'm alex witt. a black friday frenzy. millions of shoppers hitting stores today. it's the busiest shopping day of the year. our sara dahllof is standing by. first, nbc's kerry sanders reports today's shopping is becoming a contact sport. >> 3, 2, 1. >> america's holiday shopping season -- is now at full tilt. with bargain hunters determined not to miss out on those after thanksgiving deals. >> last year, i came late and, like, there was, like, lines and

lines everywhere. >> already this morning, several videos popping up online, allegedly showing chaos in the aisles, as customers battle to save a few bucks. the international council of shopping centers estimates black friday is now such an event in our country, four out of ten american shoppers do their holiday buying today. >> the question that's on a lot of consumer's minds is do you actually go out and buy today or do you maybe play the waiting game. the answer's both. you probably do a little bit of shopping today. and then you supplement that in subsequent days. >> retailers hope this year's falling gas prices will help accelerate sales it it's estimated for every one penny drop in the price of gas at the pump, consumers have an additional $1 billion in congressional spending money. >> the outlook for holiday spending is good. stronger than what we've seen in a number of years. many folks are forecatting we'll see holiday sales grow overall more than 4% which is quite

strong. >> for parents -- >> my teenage son wants video games. my little 5-year-old wants ninja turtles. i'm not sure what my daughter wants. what do you want? >> the pressure is on. >> well, we'll find something. >> the must have gift this year for boys, legos. and for girls, anything to do with the movie "frozen." and trying to avoid being frozen may be why we found two best friends from toronto on a three-day trip to miami just for black friday deals. >> i feel like it's halloween for grown-ups. >> i like the sales for sure. >> halloween for grown-ups. our thanks to nbc's kerry sanders just outside miami there. now sarah dallof here in new york. toys "r" us opened at 5:00 yesterday afternoon. how's it going today? >> it's going well, alex. it's smooth and steady. started yesterday at 5:00 p.m. they had about 2,000 people

lined up outside the door. they're going to go at this location tonight until midnight. now, that is a lot of shopping hours. to keep people coming in, to keep things steady, they have them -- they have different deals, depending on the hour here in the store they're offering. it's not just the deals people are after, it is specific toys, the hot days of this year. you heard kerry sanders mention frozen. those are very big now. you can see them all over the stores. there's also things, exclusives stores are offering, guarantees. here's at toys "r" us, it's a lot of the teenage mutant ninja turtles merchandise. you can see this guy. that's a lot of fun here. toys "r" us, like a lot of retailers, trying to make the experience as easy for customers as possible. a lot of online deals for people who want to shop at home. at the store, they're offering express lanes. so you don't get stuck in some of these long lines depending on

the amount of items you have. just like the grocery store. and be in and out in minimal time. >>cy i am still recovering from a tickle me elmo purchase from a few years ago. i do want to mention this, this is not just an american tradition anymore. i want to show you black friday video from london. i guess for some people black friday just a bit too much to resist. >> wow, yes, that is -- obviously it is a trend that transcends the globe here. other countries obviously getting into it. here at toys "r" us, things are very calm with these 2,000 people. a lot of excitement but no chaos, no melee. we're meeting a lot of international visitors who have come to this times square location. they know what black friday is. they wanted to check it out. considering black friday an american tradition as well. something that you come visit here in new york just like you would the statute of liberty or the empire state building.

>> thank you, out in the middle of it all for us, appreciate that. residents of ferguson, missouri, waking up to a relatively calm night. today, some organizers are trying an aggressive new strategy. calling for a boycott of black friday shopping. what are protesters hoping to accomplish with this boycott? >> well, alex, the idea is try and bring together and organize the collective bargaining power of people across the country who have been demanding justice for michael brown and make a big statement. over the course the demonstrates over the past few months, there are attempts to disrupt shopping malls and boycott shops. this seems to have a really profound impact. >> around 75 protesters marched into a target, calling on shoppers to boycott black friday. just one of several major retail stores visited as police stood watch. in ferguson, police and national guard troops took up positions outside a walmart as calls for

protests spread on social media with the hash tags blackout black friday. together we can stand up and spark change tweeted activi activist/entrepreneur russell simmons. but mostly calm. michael brown's family gathered around their table, one chair left empty. the picture tweeted by advocates for families who lost loved ones to police violence. protesters tried to make their voices heard at new york's thanksgiving day parade. seven were arrested. steve moore took down some of the boards protecting his restaurant and hoped customers would come back. >> i'm barely making it. but i have to reach out and let people know there's hope. >> reporter: business is off 80% he says. but he still offered free meals to guests from a nearby church. >> so what's good? >> everything. >> you think the trouble is over? >> no, i do not. it's just beginning.

>> and now supporters of the man at the center of the controversy here, officer darren wilson. >> people are offering bounties on his life. he believes if he ever went back to the department, he would put others at risk. >> not surprising, they say he's keeping a low profile while this storm rage, around him. retailers are paying attention to this black friday protest to see if it takes hold. >> thanks so much. on the heels of that, let's bring in charles rangel of new york who joins me in the studio. welcome, sir. let's talk about the lack of issue, lack of problems in the last 24 hours in ferguson. i imagine that is a welcome relief to you. >> it is. i just hope that both sides are taking advantage of this to try to see how they can avoid something in a nonviolent way and improve the quality of life

in this community. i always try to find something good that comes out of conflicts like this. and perhaps people would realize that this is not a ferguson problem at all. it's a problem around the country. and as long as people feel awkward and embarrassed in talking about racism that exists, we can never, never, never attack it. and the indifference of the patrol officer's an indication that good people ought to say that you should be sorry when you take anybody's life. it's not just the question of what you thought of whether you were afraid, but his total indifference just polarized that community and i only wish that they had not vetted themselves, in a vileaolent way and take advantage of people coming together, white and black, and say you should at least be able to say you made a help of a big mistake, at least, at least. >> following the grand jury

decision, sir, you said it is during times of turbulence when we must remain stronger and resilient to promote healing within our communities. you're talking about discussion. but specifically, how do you do that going forward? >> well, first of all, you do it by appealing to the interests of the people. there's no question in my mind that every policeman knows that his or her success is based on the cooperation of those people that they govern. to be able to be pointed out the wrongdoers. to get information as necessary. to form a type of relationship that is not the police. it's a community. and the police are a part of it. just saying good morning to police. i know. i'm 84 years old. i've seen this go up and down in the city of new york. you can scare the hell out of a white policeman, black policeman. say good morn, how are you feeling today? they look around. they tell people this.

they give it back to you. and the whole idea of coming to the job thinking that you're going to control people means you don't have the same feeling about them as you do your own family and your own community and i don't care what color you are, i've been overseas in combat. and when you're trained that people are different, they can be on your side or not on your side. if you're not an american. you can feel that they're inferior. it is bad how the mind can do it. but what bothers me, alex, is the silence of the religious community. they should be calling up elected officials today. whether they're new or old saying why don't you take advantage of these -- >> sunday sermons, yeah. >> they should. they should be calling the public officials that's in their congregati congregation, in the synagogue or what not. >> can i ask you, your constituents, what they're telling you? because on the heels of all this unrest, we had unrest of seven people in times square relative

to ferguson protests. what are your constituents telling you? >> they're telling me thank god for the technology. because cops don't normally have their wrongful conduct videoed. normally, you snatch somebody you believe is politically helpless. you take them in an alley. and you do what you have to do. there are no witnesses. and any grand jury that's just listening to the prosecutor. and nobody in defense of the victim will tell you that these things are just not reported. and people that are the victims are reluctant to report it. and police are smart enough not to do with it a bunch of eyewitnesses. and so if you're a young black guy, your parents have to tell you, no matter how you feel about your manlihood, shut up and do ways told, because sometimes it's easier to have no

gearing up to welcome the arrival of the official christmas tree. after spend wag president obama called his favorite holiday together yesterday. the president also taking time to make a series of phone calls to u.s. troops. nbc's kristen welker. the white house tree arrives in a couple hours. that picture of the president on the phone, he's having so much fun. >> it looks like he was having some great phone calls. if only we could hear what he was saying. sounds like heenj enjoying the holiday. the official christmas tree will arrive here at the white house in about two hours. the first lady receives the official christmas tree. she's usually joined by the first daughters. we have a few fun facts about this year's christmas tree, alex. it is going to be presented by the botek family this year. the tree is 18 feet. it's a douglas fir. the grower is a second

generation christmas tree farmer. he's also the national christmas tree contest 2010 champion. his parents, francis and margar margaret, were the 2006 contest champions. it is going to be a big tree. this tradition of getting a tree from the national christmas tree association dates back to 1966. this tradition of having a christmas tree here at the white house goes back to 1856. under president franklin pierce. so a great tradition here. i can tell you some of the other decorations, the lights and the other smaller christmas trees, have already started going up around the perimeter of the white house. this is always a fun tradition here at 1600 pennsylvania avenue. >> what are you, some history and lit major at harvard? which she was. thank you very much, we'll check in later this morning. it is a quiet weekend for the president before congress returns on monday from its

week-long thanksgiving break. meantime, house speaker john boehner's secret recipe for cooking turkey. it's what he called his brine recipe. >> put the turkey in, pour the brine over it. put it outside if it's cold enough or in the ridefrigerator for about 24 hours. first half, cook it breast down. halfway through, pick it up, turn it over. i cook my bird to about 160 max. then i take it out. i put foil over it and let it sit for at least an hour. it's resting time that really works. >> okay. here in our studio, "washington post" political reporter matt and our other guest, also a reporter. anything you think that might work here when things get back to work on monday?

>> i have to give the speaker credit. he's very good on social media. that video was great. i think you may be reading a little into it. it is definitely the case he has not mastered the recipe of how to deal with conservative elements of his caucus. that is something he's going to be working on for the next couple weeks. >> maybe some turkeys in congress too. let's talk about the president who got in a few jabs of his own at the annual turkey pardon. let's watch this. >> i am here to announce what i'm sure will be the most talked about executive action this month. today, i'm taking an action fully within my legal authority. i know some will call this amnesty. but don't worry, there's plenty of turkey to go around. >> was he subtle or not so subtle, just humorous jabs, all

in good fun? >> i think it's all in good fun for now but we're going to see whether that holds next week. when congress returns next monday, they have just ten days before government funding exp e expires. an interesting balance republicans have to strike. fight against this executive action but also appease their base. >> do you think though despite the leadership dichotomy, you've got one head of the senate who's saying we're not going to shut the government down. you've got the head of the house who said we can do it. what do you think is likely to happen there? >> part of the problem is that boehner has this history of having to deal with the conservative congress. michele bachmann is no longer going to be in congress. so i think it's -- not to mention there are going to be more house members that are republican in general. he's got a stronger base of people who will go with him and do what he wants to do. it's hard to predict these things stimgometimes.

they have this idea to do a long-term budget over most of the main priorities but then hold some of the immigration-related stuff on a shorter time line just to sort of give people a way to protest the immigration action. but i think it remains to be seen. i don't think boehner and mcconnell are very far apart. mcconnell is in a new role. >> what do you think will get accomplished or can get accomplished? >> certainly a lot of options. the government shutdown. there are also some conservatives saying the speaker should refuse to invite obama to deliver the state of the union address which actually has legal standing but would invite a lot of bad press. i think that's what it comes down to. is how much bad press do republicans want. i don't think they want to relieve 2014. it's going to come down to the wire. i think it's going to be up to that. >> i don't think they want their popularity ratings to plummet. >> but it's worth keeping in mind over the course of the next

12 months, a lot of republicans are going to be looking to win primaries. a key issue is immigration. appeal to the most conservative part of the republican party. it's going to be hard for them to take action. >> good to see you both, thank you. coming up on this black friday, a big chill in the northeast and some stormy weather out west. bill karins is going to tell us what you can expect. that's coming up.

anytime. we're following a developing story out of austin, texas. where police shot and killed add man after he alleged opened fire on several downtown buildings before dawn this morning. before being shot by the cops. >> 911 communication started receiving phone calls of shots being fired in the downtown area. which ultimately involved three

buildings that we know of so far. one of the buildings was police headquarters. one of our officers that was in front of the building saw the suspect. fired at the suspect. the suspect went down. >> fortunately, no bystanders were injured in the incident. police were trying to determine if the suspect had a motive. still unknown. the drivers heading home had to deal with dangerous conditions in ohio. the slippery roads there. some snowplow trucks reportedly got stuck. what can we expect with so many people out on the roads for black friday? >> some of them probably going. did you talk to your friends in l.a.? it was 86 in l.a. >> i hung up on most of them.

>> yeah. i have friends in minneapolis. it was 10 degrees yesterday for their high temperature. cold thanksgiving in portions of minnesota and north dakota. there was some spots that suffered. at least we're done with all that snow. chicago's at 7 so a very cold black friday shopping. all through the great lakes. good thing the stores don't open at midnight. we don't have people waiting t outdoors in the cold anymore. it's still snowing, changing from rain to snow. if you're driving i-95, portland to boston, especially the secondary roads, definitely on the secondary side. >> we have a little bit of icing on the car, that's probably about it. in wisconsin, we saw some snow.

about half an inch. let me take you through what is going to be the big warm-up into december. so today, 71 in denver. all that warmth that was in the area, it's on its way. kansas city jumps to 54. 60 on saturday. even chicago jumps to 51. after a brutally cold november, that's going to feel nice. as we get towards the northeast, it's still a relatively cold friday, cold saturday. by the time we get to sunday, we're going to try to warm you up. d.c. near 60. that's like shorts and t-shirts. compared to how cold it's been lately. we're heading in the right direction in a lot of areas. it looks like december, at least the first week or two, is going to be relatively mild. may end up warmer than november. >> as native americans continue to be plagued with high unemployment and widespread poverty, president obama's unveiling a new initiative to help pull them into the middle

class. we'll head to the white house and speak with the interior secretary. as the nation begins to see improvement in employment, one group of americans is still feeling more than their fair share of joblessed in and poverty. 1 in 4 native americans live in poverty in this country. unemployment is at 11 percent, nearly twice the national rate. problems may begin early on. now the obama administration is pushing ahead with the plan to target some of the lowest performing schools in the country. i'm joined by the chair for the white house council on native american affairs. welcome to you. let's talk about this plan which puts a lot of things together. the federal government in more of a supporting role and getting tribal communities direct

responsibility now for educating their own children. what is the strategy? >> the strategy really alex is to turn control of the things that tribes know they need most over to the tribes. for hundreds of years, we've had treaty obligations. yet we have not fulfilled the obligations we are supposed to under those trust and treaty obligations. one of the things this administration has really pushed, at the encouragement of tribal leaders, is self-government, self-determination. it's been a movement now for a few decades towards this. we're really accelerating it forward. >> i know currently managing about 120 schools, we're told. what kind of results do you see there? >> the bureau of indian education is responsible for the education of indian children. we have about 40,000 children educated in bie-funded schools across the country.

and their academic performance is substantially below just about any other group of students. we're not serving indian children in the way that we're really committed to do. we're in the process of significant reforms which actually involve turning control of those schools over to the tribes and then providing them with the kind of support they need to do a much better job. >> there's a big problem in term, of the support they need. because one huge issue in native american schools is one of infrastructure. the old decaying buildings. they're unfit to house students. these schools are located in very remote areas. so can your department do something to target that speck problem? >> well, yes, we can. one out of three schools operated by the bureau of indian education is considered to be in poor condition. i've been to a number of schools across the country. and pretty consistently, i see

facilities that have gone without repairs for many years. some cases, they're too cold or too hot. they oftentimes lack the kind of facilities for laboratory science and the things that students need to compete in today's world. so we are not serving them well. it does require money. our budgets have not been adequate for really decadings. this is something that i intend to work on with congress to rectify. >> i understand the budget, you're trying to push another 3 billion or so for 2015 which would be great. i want to ask about something that's been discussed over thanksgiving dinner tables across this country. the issue involving the native american community that continues to get the attention regarding the name of the washington redskins. some say it's a slur it the new yorker magazine, you probably saw it, it features the controversy on this week's cover. i know you said this wasn't high on the agenda but you were surprised the name had not been

changed. >> the name is a relic of the past and should be changed in my opinion. there are many things that tribal leaders face and when they talk to me they're talking about those things i have control over. or things i have influence over. like their budgets. like indian coordination. like coordinating. i don't control the name a football team. but it's very clear it's a name that is a relish of the past. i think it's time the owners take a look at. >> thank you so much for joining us. happy holidays to you and yours. >> same to you, alex. >> turning back to holiday shopping in this season. shoppers have been at it the for more than 12 hours in more than some places. check out this mall in north carolina which was packed with crowds overnight. we're in date ytodayton, ohio. you've got people including yourself out today. the question to you is how

deeply are they reaching into that wallet? >> yeah, exactly. we may not know exactly how far they're reaching under that wallet now. it does look as if traffic is perhaps modestly higher than what we saw last year at the stores. again, a lot of these sales are being shifted. pulled towards that thursday. because of the earlier hours fors thiss this. i visited both the walmart and target last night around 8:00 and it did look like there were more people in the stores then than i saw about the same time last year. the question is, did everyone go home, did they come back out? there are shoppers that are picking up the pace. it seems as if they had a little break overnight, got some sleep and came back out. overnight, we saw younger shoppers are hitting the stores. now it seems it's a bit more the familyings. some bags. not a lot. it remains to be seen exactly how much shoppers are spending. ibm says online sales are up more than 14%. that's for thanksgiving day. target says its website sales up

40%. marking its best day ever. walmart having its second best day ever online. people are out there shopping. we just wonder how much longer it's going to last throughout today and this weekend. >> thanks for giving us the pulse of how it's going right now. tiffany reagan. south florida, where nbc's kerry sanders is joining us from the mall outside miami. i know you were up late with the crowds. what are you seeing? >> well, we've seen the crowds actually grow here this morning. at the earliest hours where people come out for those first hour door buster sales. it really wasn't packed. it certainly is picking up now. a steady crowd. a lot of people started on thanksgiving. it's still rather controversial. some people feel you shouldn't be shopping on thanksgiving. it should be a day for family. today should be the day. one interesting thing about those who will be out shopping, the international council of shopping centers economists have calculated that for every penny dropped in the price of gas at

the pump, it gives consumers about $1 billion extra for discretionary spending. so, if you do the calculus, they're suggesting there may be those moments before christmas sales where a lot of companies are trying to get their black sales, you know, black friday is to get all the economy for the ledgers into the black out of the red. those last-minute sales may not actually happen. because people have more money in their pockets right now. and so they'll debate, do you buy now, do you wait till the end? some are suggesting buying now rather than waiting. because those deals may never show up at the end. >> okay. kerry saying don't really hedge your bets this year. thanks. okay, i'm done, i'm done. i'm blowing it. see you. coming up, more on ferguson. after days of unrest, the

thanksgiving. and for the brown family not to have their son with them. and thanks to the lack of prosecute will and the incompetenincomp incompeteincomp incompetence of mccollough, no justice for the family. so it's a symbol for all of us to stay out here to continue to fight, continue to work for justice, continue to fight for reform in this community, until people like the browns tonight have to worry about their children when they're walking streets at night. >> your assessment there of what happened. as you call the confidence there by the officials in the grand jury. is that a pervasive thought throughout ferguson? is that something revealed in pockets in ferguson? can you categorize that? >> you have to realize this is

really a st. louis metro area thing. i believe there is very little confidence in this system, in the court system. prosecutor mccollough. from a big swath of the population. numerous cases throughout the years. the mike brown case has made international headlines. the general feeling here is that if you look at how the prosecution is ran, if you look at how they have run interference for wilson basically acting as defense attorneys, this does not do a lot to build confidence in the prosecutor's office in the public. >> talk about what happened last night in ferguson. basically nothing. i mean, no arrests, injuries, damage. do you think the community as a whole is taking a moment to pause, take a deep breath, consider everything that's happened? >> the protesters are people in the community. they have families like everybody else. myself i was observing thanksgiving and my daughter gave birth to my first grandchild yesterday.

>> congratulations. >> thank you. i appreciate it. they all have their own lives. law enforcement when they're in communities like ferguson and other parts of the county did not see the humanity of the public. they recognize their own humanity and they recognize their own need for safety but they do not recognize that need for other people. at the end of the day, we're all humans. this is an american holiday tradition. >> i want to ask you about the new orleans saints benjamin watson who posted, i'm sad because another young life was lost from his family. hurt and hatred are boiling over and we may never know the truth. how does ferguson rebuild and move forward in the days ahead? >> i think you have two different ways of looking at it. i think you have some people say, okay, let's just get back

event as those? >> i do. i think so. i think ten years ago i don't know if people particularly young people really took as much pride in giving back as they do today. now people want to tell their friends about the great initiatives and projects they're doing for their favorite causes. i think the giving tuesday movement has done an incredible job rallying people. it's just the third year. we're psyched to play a small role in it. >> well, i know you are. you should be. >> can you give us a description how it works. >> it's a fundraising site where you go and give back to the causes you care about. really the exact same way you tell your friends what you're doing on twitter. for giving tuesday, we wanted to figure out a way for the world to have one place to show their philanthropic impacts. we're building a giant giving tower on giving tuesday.

electronics store. look at that! all to gaet a deal on a television. our brave sara dallof made her way into toys "r" us. how are things going there? >> traffic is definitely picking up. if you love it or hate it, it is one thing for sure. black friday is not only here to stay but starting to get even bigger encroaching on thanks giving. toys "r" us opened yesterday to a crowd of 2,000 shoppers. they stayed open until now. they're going close their doors, finally, at midnight tonight. they're offering various deals on the different hours. to scare keep people coming in. they're the hit toys. you guessed, anything related to "frozen" as well as logo. anything pet related.

these aren't stuffed toys. they bark at you, they move. they're fun for kids. and parents, it's a way to give their child a pet without the real commitment of that. for people who aren't in the shop until you drop mode, they're targeting you. things like express lanes and downloadable map so you need to know before you get in the store to make your trip as quick and smooth as possible. >> i like giving your kids the pet without the mess. what are you hearing from shoppers. are they spending more or less this holiday season? >> about the same as compared to years last. we are hearing good things that the gap prices are down a little bit more money in people's pockets. one thing retailers say they're seeing is people aren't just coming for if the door buster deals. they're picking those up, of course, but adding regular items. regularly priced items. retailers are looking -- hoping for a increase over last year in

terms of sales. >> all right. people still out and about. sara dallof inside toys "r" us. thank you. we want to take you to ferguson. groups of demonstrators interrupted black friday shopping. they marched through the mall and a handful of other locations. it's in response to the grand jury decision not to indict officer darren wilson for fatally shooting michael brown. in ferguson, it was relatively calm last night. police say they made no arrest and there were no reports of damage or injuries. joining me now is john gask. let me get your reaction to the calm last night in ferguson. >> well, you know, obviously yesterday was a holiday. people have seen the calls from the parents and community leaders to act in a dignified way to continue to protest but do it peacefully and to certainly not destroy property

or take things that don't belong to them. but i think before listening to what the family has asked them to do. that is continue to protest peacefully, but to do it also do it in a they is constructive and does not cause further damage to our community. >> there are protesters calling on a boycott of black friday. i want to get your opinion. do you agree with that or could it cause more damage for furgson businesses that have already suffered from violent protests earlier this week. >> what many people don't know is community leaders are encouraging people to shop and support black businesses today. rather than going to the chain stores and to major businesses like walmart, who we're well aware of in terms of their employee practices, to not shop at places like that today. the black spending power in the united states is $1 trillion.

it appears the impact will be significant, especially here in the st. louis area as many african-american leaders have expressed to their congregations and communities to stay home today on black friday or go and support black businesses. i think that will send a message to the community that many people are upset. it's not just african-americans participating in the boycott today and staying home on black friday. i've spoken with many whites that are, you know, obviously sending a message with their dollars today by not shopping today. let's talk about darren wilson. they are investigating possible civil rights violations. do you think he'll face civil rights charges? >> the bar is extremely high for federal civil rights charges. i'm not at liberty to discuss what the michael brown family's attorneys may be looking into.

it's a very good possibility he could face some civil charges. and so in terms of what is next for darren wilson, if i were him, if i were his legal team, i would be concerned because there are still a number of obviously a federal investigation that is still underway. there's a possibility he could face a civil case. have you heard about that from the family are they going to launch that? what do you know? >> i have not. as we know, you know, their son was killed by a ferguson police officer in, you know, that is it looks as though it could be a potential wrongful death lawsuit. whether it's the direction they're moving in, i have no idea. i know, as a family if i couldn't get justice from a grand jury to have darren wilson indicted or criminal charges, i could assure you if i were the parent i would be trying to explore all avenues.

>> what is your message for the country and the activists going forward in the next few days, weeks, and months ahead. >> the protests have been going on for over 100 days. i challenge community protesters, community organizers to consider mentorship. to consider ferguson men touring within the city of ferguson. over 100 days have been dedicated to protests. if we took 100 hours in in the time and resources we have put into protest and mentoring young people with law enforcement to address that void and to improve the reputation of law enforcement and help build trust, i believe we can truly make a difference and change the system. >> i want you to take a look at the photograph we've been able to get our hands on. it's of the brown family during

thanksgiving there. everyone is gathered around the table. there is an empty chair that, of course, is in honor of michael brown. what is your reaction to seeing this picture? >> it's very sad. you know, we're -- thanksgiving is the start of the holiday season, and many of us have lost loved ones before. we know how difficult it is to expense the ho-- spend the holi season for the first time without that loved one. you think about their spirit, fun moments you had with them around the time of the year. it's the most wonderful time of year. to sit down and dine yesterday evening without your son for the first time, you know, as the media cameras leave, as we roll into the holiday season, it's going to be a very sobering moment for his family as they realize christmas is coming and we know longer have our oldest son. my heart goes out to them. my sympathies. we have to continue to work for

starting today the obama administration is promoting health coverage at some shopping malls across the country. the enrollment push involves

setting up outreach tables in florida, illinois, new jersey, new york, connecticut, maryland, and washington state. in addition to that, california's insurance marketplace will work with malls in that state. this push comes ahead of the december 15th deadline for health coverage that starts january 1st. you have until february 15th to sign up for coverage or face a penalty. the obama administration says during the first week of enrollment, which started november 15th, nearly a half million people signed up. joining me now is washington post politics reporter and jennifer havrcorn. >> jennifer, let me start with you. after last years -- >> six people got through the

website last year. more got through. nearly a half million people were able to fill out an application and get coverage in the first week. it's night and day. the administration said they're off to a good start. and if the website continues to operate the way it has so far, you know, surely they're going to enroll many more people before the deadline in february. >> jackie, the goal is to sign up, what 9 million people this year versus the seven million who signed up last year, is that correct? >> yeah. i think there was a discrepancies in the numbers, actually. the secretary of health and human services sylvia burwell apologized for that. the numbers were misreported by the administration. there is quite a bit. because of that now you have some congressional hearings. so, you know, we'll see what the numbers actually are, but you would think they're going to be a little bit more careful when they reported to us next time. >> you're referring to the embarrassment that the numbers were inflated last year with the

figures. some 400,000 people signed up for dental coverage only but it was lumped into all of that. administration official called that a mistake. is that easily wiped away as just a mistake? >>, i mean, one of the problems with this is, i mean, sure, yes. it's a mistake they apologized. however, it sort of feels a perception among particularly republicans that the administration isn't being straight with them when it comes to obamacare. it feels that narrative wasn't necessary lay good thing. talk about what is new this year. are we seeing more choices? yeah. some states are seeing more choices. there was about 25% increase in the number of insurers that decided to, you know, get on board and sell plans. premiums, you know, across the country are varying. some places we're seeing premiums go up. some place we're seeing premium

goes down. one interesting thing is the administration is dealing with this year. the people reenrolling. the administration is hoping they get those people to keep their coverage whether that's staying in the same insurance they had this year or enrolling in a new plan. if the administration is going hit their target of 9.1 million it it would be helpful if the 7 million stayed on ward. and, you know, i think as we get closer to that december 15th deadline you mentioned. we're going to see the people are going to have to get online before then if they want their coverage to start again on january 1st. that's going to be a test of the are the power of the website if it can keep up with what we can expect to see as heavy traffic and, you know, politically if people like their coverage in the first year. if they want to keep it. >> speaking of the politics involved. the republicans are vowing to dismantle the law. the president is ready to veto any such effort.

how ugly could this get? >> you know, mitch mcconnell vowed to repeal obamacare. he said at the enld of the day this is something they won't be able to get by the president. i think the biggest danger when it comes to obamacare to obamacare is what the supreme court is going to be considering when it comes to federal subsidies? the next term. it would, in effect, not allow the government to federally subsidize a lot of plans in states without their own exchanges. in addition to that, when it comes to congress. one of the things they could potentially repeal is the medical device tax. there is a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers that are willing to do this. that would provide a funding problem for obamacare. so i think apart from republicans there are other things that could threaten the law. >> all right. thank you we appreciate you joining us today. >> thank you. >> sure!

let's talk about the cold that is going go away for some but not all. we're frigid this morning. we're going end november the way it was for much of the month which was unusually chilly across the country. let's track the cold air. this is the weather map i use. i color coded to show the coldest air. that's white and dark purple. white is chilly. friday into saturday into sunday a lot of the cold air retreats to the north. a little chunk remains there in the northern plains and northern new england. in general as we go into december from coast to coast we're looking pretty nice. the one exception minneapolis you get a little tease. go outside and enjoy your saturday. could be the warmest day you have for a long time. by sunday the high will be 9. the nobody half of the country you expect this. look at washington, d.c., this week as we go into december. 60 on monday. it's going to be feeling balmy. 46 on tuesday.

other areas like dallas it's we're calling it the term everybody has polar vortex. other term we've been using is weather whiplash. all of a sudden you're cold, hot, then cold again. look at dallas. you go to 79 on sunday. then we blow that cold front through. dropping it 30 degrees to 48 on monday. so some changes in store across the country. for your friday forecast snow showers in the great lakes. by the time we get to the weekend forecast the warmth takes over and there's the cold chunk coming down for the northern plains. betty, after this november we've talked about the buffalo snowstorm, we just got done with the nor'easter. the early cold outbreak. we need a break. >> what is crazy is it's warming up in time for december. >> we have to hang the christmas lights. >> and wear hawaiian shirts. thank you. now to scary moments in texas this morning. it ended with a suspect being shot and killed by police.

austin police say the suspect was shooting at random buildings including the police headquarters forcing officers to evacuate the building. police returned fire killing him. it's not clear what the motive was. but no one else was hurt. thieves in several big cities are using a new tactic to take whatever they want. it's being called the crash and grab. they use a pickup truck to smash inside, grab what they can, and run. there have been six reports of such crimes a kr s s a across t country. >> an incredible rescue in upstate new york. two boys are pulled out alive after being fburied in feet of snow. a snowplow came by and dumped more snow on top. when the boys didn't return home by 10:00 police canvassed the okay. >> there was a shovel halfway buried in.

we're following the black friday traffic outside miami. it seems like a steady crowd there, right? all night and morning? >> yeah. very steady crowd here. i spoke to the clerks who compared it to last year and they say right now, even though you see a lot of people behind me it's not as busy, they feel, as it was last year. a lot has do with the fact, as you know, the black friday deals actually began thursday at 6:00 p.m. a lot of people got out after their thanksgiving meals and started shopping. it's still a little controversy in the country whether thanksgiving should be a day to shop. i think the controversy is one that is now around the substantial at home. retailers in the united states have decided there was enough demand they'll open up and people continue to shop as soon as the stores open up. i think that is prettiful solved. it's why you see a steady crowd here but according to the clerks here it's not overwhelming like it was last year. >> you have to get in early for

the door buster deals. has there been one deal or one special that attracted more people out today? >> you know, it's kind of like this game of mathematics where you walk in according to the clerks and the customers i've talked to. they look at it as 50% off. that's a great deal come in and get 50% off. then we talked to the economists and you have to do a little bit of math yourself. you look at how maybe the price of that item was raised before you got 50% off. you might have only saved 10%. it's a little bit of a game. a little bit of a dahl clus. and frankly, as you know, betty, for at lot of families going out and doing the shopping is as much as an experience as it is spending money. i actually met two young girls here today. they got up super early. they came in, they were excited. i asked them what they purchased and they said nothing. >> they were in it for the fun of it, i guess. thank you. now for some advise how to

today. let's get you back to ferguson. calm has returned to the streets after quiet holiday night. there are no visible protests in the cityover night as the national guard patrolled the area. police say they made no arrests. at the same time, this picture was released of michael brown's family on thanksgiving day showing an empty seat at the dinner table renting the loss of their loved one. joining me now is the president and michael lewis. >> it's a tough picture to see. i want to get your reaction. >> i think when you look at what the brown family has been through, you definitely realize the pain they have experienced and the community has experienced in the past 100 plus days. >> let me ask -- speaking of the days that have ensued and what we've seen this week compared to last night, the relative calm, how do you interpret that that things are moving on, they're

moving forward, or changing direction? what is going on. >> i think they're changing direction at the moment. this weekend, i think you'll see a lot of economic boycotts and protests related to various coalitions that are attempting to exact some attention based on that strategy at the moment. >> michael brown's death has sparked a movement, as you know, across the entire country. in fact, and now that the grand jury has made a decision not to indict officer darren wilson, where does the movement go from here. >> well there are many different facets to the movement. there are issues of police brutality, diversity in police forces that have to be addressed. there are issues with the law. there's accountability from the police department like having cameras on every officer. there's the economic side of the entire justice movement that talks about jobs, economic opportunity, instability, and poor communities across the country. and there are issues reinvolving around education and economic

empowerment for african-americans and disenfranchised people of all races. >> there's a lot of outlets and a lot of ways which it can go and progress, if you will. the urban league launched a program called "saving our son." it's aimed at ferguson and surrounding communities. how does it work and what do you hope to establish? >> one of the things that came about from the ferguson protests, the people in the community, especially will the youth felt as they were not being listened to. we wanted to go out. i went out personally and talked to many of the protesters on the street. i asked them what can we do to make a difference? especially the young men, each and every one of them said we need jobs and we need economic opportunity. we need training. we need education. we need scholarships. i made a promise to them on behalf of the urban league we would get out immediately and do something positive to make a difference. we've been able to do so by taking our work force investment act program we've had for the past 12 years and expanding that

thank you for being with me. it's been really an emotional few days. first, the president surprising you by telling your story during his speech and you introducing him at the event in las vegas. how was thanksgiving different this year for your family? >> it has definitely been a very interesting and a week to be grateful for. last night when we had dinner, i think we really sat there and were able to start planning our christmas plans. it was the first time where it wasn't with the fear of saying, you know, maybe dad won't be there by the time that time comes. >> help us what it's like to live in that constant fear. >> it's very difficult. people don't realize that going to bed every night you can wake up at any time during the morning and immigration can come

to your door. when my dad was taken in 2011 they came to our door at 5:30. you wonder if you're going to come home that day and if they'll be there or if, you know, immigration might have picked them up at work. >> how would were you when you became aware of that fact? >> i think when i realized what was happening i had to have been about 15 or 16. when i started hearing different stories on the news and it actually became a reality and something that was completely possible when i was around 20 years old. and i realized that, you know, there was these things happening and there were so many raids in our community. it really became a reality that the time. >> what do you do? do you live your life differently to make sure that each and every day your chance of not seeing your dad leave or your dad not getting deported gets a little bit better? >> it makes you appreciate every

single day a lot more. i text my dad every single morning when i can't call him. i have to check to see if he's okay. sometimes when he doesn't answer and he's working and it makes me anxious because i'm wondering does he not answering because he's working or because immigration has taken him and they have his phone? and so it does create a lot of uncertainty. there's at will have fear, which is why i think that this action has made it so much better for us. i can only hope for a congressional law that is going to make it so this isn't something temporary. >> the president's plan keeps you and your family together, at least for now. you said after the president's speech that the fight isn't over. what is next? >> for me and my family, it is definitely starting to help other community members that didn't qualify for this. i know, my family is very blessed to have, you know, have fallen under the president's guidelines. but i know that the only permanent solution will be for

our congressional representatives to step up to the plate and make a law. from here it's fighting every single day so they understand our stories and they realize we need the congress to act on this. >> how are you getting them to fight for you if you will? >> we've had a continuous presence here in nevada with our congressional representatives. i think that made has unique in our state. our congressional representatives they have, at least, had meetings with us. i think it's for all. even if do you don't agree with the issue, you have to understand the fear. i'm 26 years old. and i live in fear my dad will be deported. i can't imagine the 6 year-old, 7-year-old coming home to an empty house and not knowing where their mom and dad where. >> i was going to ask you for your advice. you've grown up with the fear. what is your advice to young people, especially now that we're seeing that the laws are in the process of changing

>>well, most importantly, the reason my family is in the situation we are because we were scammed by somebody who committed fraud. they weren't certified to be processing documentation and they did it anyway. and i make sure that the members of our community understand that not everybody is out to help them. also, there are certified people that can be processing this paperwork. and, also, make sure that the families that are in fear of any moment being deported know what their rights are and what their rights are in concerns to their children. because people forget that these children are our oftentimes just, you know, they don't know what immigration is. they're 5 years old. it's very important us to let them know. >> thank you so much for joining us today. we appreciate it. christmas comes to pennsylvania avenue. we are going live to the white house where the official christmas tree has arrived. stick around! ugh... ...heartburn.

by the way, his parents francis and margaret were the 2006 contest champions and national christmas tree association presented the official white house christmas free for display in the blue room since 1966. it is arriving here with snow flakes. perfect more christmas. neighbor bodes well for having a white christmas here. last year's christmas tree was dedicated to the service-members of the military. we're waiting to see the theme this year. a highly anticipated here at the white house. this comes on the heels of a very festive thanksgiving here. the first family had a traditional feast with all of the fixens, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and six different pies. that's right. apple pie, pumpkin, also a little bit of serious business. president obama did call service-members. that's another tradition here at

the white house. this year he thanked them for their work toward defeating ebola and, also, confronting the threat of isis. i can tell you there's a full lid here. he's going have a down day at the white house. a busy schedule when he returns to work on monday. including picking a new defense secretary. that's the first item on his agenda. i would bet he will be having some meetings about that throughout the weekend. as of right now, just a lot of pomp and circumstance as the first lady and the first da daughters get set to welcome the official christmas tree. >> i wonder if they'll be in on the action of decorating the tree. >> 18.5 feet. they usually have volunteers and the first family helps out as well. traditionally, it is a tree dedicated to the service-member. that's a big theme here at the

the day. they evaluate option for going whatever they want. toys "r" us opened at 5:00 p.m. yesterday. they won't close until midnight tonight. you want to talk about how shoppers have the reputation of being competitive on black friday. the retailers are expanding their hours and offering better deals to get people inside their stores. so far here today we're seeing the hot toys are anything related to the movie frozen. anything pet related. very popular today. we talked to a couple of shoppers about their experiences so far. >> i thought it was going to be crowded and i didn't want to come. my daughter said come on. i'm glad i came. it's nice. >> the crowd today is not too bad. it's usually bigger than that. >> some people are spending this year in part by the low gas

prices. it's estimated for every penny that gas prices drop equals about a billion dollars in d disposable income for the holiday season. >> okay. i'm surprised there's not the pushing and shoving. to what do you attribute that? just not as crowded in the stores? they laid it out in a way that you can come at any point in the day. you don't have to wake up at 4:00 a.m. to be here at 5:00 when the doors open at 6:00 so you can shove your way in. you can come at any time during the 5:00 p.m. to midnight. they're offering different deals a the different times. if you show up first thing in the morning you might be missing out on some of the deals that are coming later in the evening. retailers starting to think smart about this. nobody wants that reputation for people getting hurt and shoved in their store. that's nothing fun around the holidays. they're trying to make it a more enjoyable experience. but keep the same excitement

friday boycott. ron allen is in ferguson for us. hi. >> it's been remarkably peaceful here in ferguson during the thanksgiving season. it's almost as if the protesters have vanished. no one knows if that's going to take hold and be what is going to happen here for some time. the heart of the city of ferguson where much of the violence happened is shut down. there are still police and national guard troops patrolling. especially around retail centers on this black friday. the protesters are trying to initiate a new strategy. they called for a boycott of black friday shopping to send a economic message they still want justice for michael brown. it's been something that happening primarily on media. we'll see it in the stores the people do not go shopping. tough for a lot of americans not do. in this parking lot we've seen a lot of police roaming around. there have been a couple of indications people are going to be protesting at stores.

protesters in ferguson, missouri are launching a new strategy today. they're calling for a boycott of black friday. overnight groups of

demonstrators in iraq did black friday shopping at the handful of locations outside ferguson. joining me now siflt rights advocate -- welcome to you both. i'm glad you're here to talk about this. so you called for the boycott of black friday in ferguson. can you explain the logic behind that? critics would suggest that ferguson community, business owners, the community in general, the residents will suffer economically from a boycott >>well, first of all, we know that the civil rights movement was basically an economic proposition. until business and industry and commerce have a vested interest in america being engaged in a conversation around racial justice specifically, these high profile incidents is where young african-american men are killed

for seemingly no reason at all until business and commerce and industry are engaged in that conversation we will see very little traction. what we have called for is people across the country to join in solidarity with michael brown's family and the leadership there in ferguson to say where there is no justice there will be no profit. >> okay. i understand that big picture. i'm posing the question to you, angela. boycotting black friday. can it be effective or can it be more harmful? i'm looking a the story of the poor guy who owns sam's meat market. that place was rioted and looted upon in august. toefs fearly burned to the ground this week. the quote i'm reading is i'm lost now. if he's not getting money coming in, once he's able to get the store going. i know, this is black friday but the whole concept the reverend is explaining here. can it do harm good? >> one thing i would say is

different from the boycott i'm participating in and supporting in and heard about is not one that would impact small businesses or small and minority owned businesses. it's overwhelmingly this message pab lost upon them. life goes on. for so many including mike brown and the 12 year-old life doesn't go on. it's a message that says, listen, you have to hear us. with our hands up and the street you will feel us with our dollars not being spent in the largest retailers in the country. i don't think it would impact a local owned business and at this point it's far beyond ferguson or st. louis county. >> okay. reverend, are you agreeing with angela's position? is that the kind of boycott. you're not going for the small businesses. are you going for those businesses in ferguson, missouri to be boycotted or more the brick and mortar stores? i think everyone across the

country that has been involved in these conversations around a black friday boycott or not buying anything has everything to do with major retailers. i don't think anyone involved in the conversations have been talking about small business or african-american businesses. i think everyone around the country is in solidarity. >> go ahead, angela. i was going to say, also, i think the important thing to note is that a lot of folks have been talking about black buying power. at this point in 2014 is well over $1 trillion. the effect is about harnessing that wealth and making sure this the strategy, again, isn't just about protest and isn't just about a black friday boycott. there are several other next steps including the legislative space. maybe there's an executive order that can take place. it's about ensuring over time black lives are saved because black lives matter. >> and i think one thing that should be clear is that money is the language of all of america

speaks. politicians on capitol hill and in state houses across the country have been involved in this conversation in the aftermath of michael brown and before that trayvon martin and the list goes on and on. politicians are engaged. people in community are engaged. preachers and ministers and leaders across the country have been engaged. the one group of influence in america that hasn't been effectively or substantiatively engaged these conversations under these unnecessary killings is the business community. until big business and industry and commerce which has enormous impact on social attitudes. until big business and industry has a big tie and vitaminestment in the conversation we'll probably see little traction to change public policy and public advocate. >> does it need to be more than just a black friday boycott? >> yes. and again, alex.

it will be helping to support legislative solutions and strategy. changing the face of public policy. it's not just about body cam. it should include community review boards. i think it's a huge messaging piece. if folks can stay on board with that today it gives us more traction later or persuasion. >> i want to on a side bar. i had representative charlie rangel here of new york earlier on the broadcast. he said one area in which he was a little bit disappointed was the religious community. he would hope reverends such as yourself you will talk about the discussion that needs to take place between all aspects of these united states and our community finance can't just be talking to, i mean, you have tow get the conversation going. understanding our differences. is that something you do and want to do or do on a regular

basis? >> you know, it's interesting you pose that alex. i was having a conversation with a group of prominent clergy here in atlanta where i live. and in the coming days i'm going to be working with preachers across the can town launch an initiative i think we're going it call one church one precinct. we work with churches and preachers and ministers and law enforcement officials to try to bridge the gap between law enforcement and community. because ultimately there is a great tension across the country between police officers and communities of color. and the churches and ministers and preachers have a unique role we can and should be playing in that conversation. so i think representative rangel is absolutely right. we have to do more in america to improve the live lines of communication there. >> amen, reverend. thank you very much. the social media movement that is encouraging people to dedicate an entire day to giving back. i'm explaining giving tuesday

steady and the people are starting to wake up after sleeping off the thanksgiving meals and they are beginning to shop until they drop as they say. holiday shoppers especially black friday shoppers have a reputation for being ultra competitive, but it's really the retailers who are battling it out. here at toys 'r us, black friday began yesterday at 5:00 and goes through midnight tonight. they have deals throughout the day to keep people coming in. according to the company, about 50% of their annual sales will happen during this holiday period. >> our team worked really hard for months to get ready for the holiday season. we will have the hot toys in stock. what we are seeing earlier

let me start with you. no arrests last night or injuries or damage. is the ferguson community taking a moment to pause and take a deep breath after everything that happened? >> absolutely. it's certainly a well-deserved moment that the community and even the protesters deserve. even though they were active protesting at given retail locations, the break is well-deserved. >> we put up the picture and we doll it again of the brown family. that empty seat at the table is really a powerful photo. it was released by the advocacy group. what impact can an image like this have? >> it's a reminder that no matter what you think about the case or what you think happened to michael brown, there is a family that is mourning. what you see very often is the families have opened up to personal attacks.

no matter which side you are on and how you feel about the case, these families end up becoming these media darylings or points of criticism. because of that it's hard to remember this is a family, a mother and father and sib lippings who no matter what happened in that intersection, they lot of their brother or son. that's the power. no matter what you believe happened, a family is missing their son. >> during the families makes it even more difficult. >> the new orleans saints tight end posted his reaction on facebook saying i'm sad because another young life was lot of from his family. the racial divide widened the community and is in shambles. we may never know the truth about what happened that day. that's what he posted. how does ferguson rebuild and move forward in the days and months ahead? >> we need to make sure the community is stabilized.

we need to make sure there is no more rioting taking place and moving forward. anything else could be a complete disaster to the community. what's left of it. some of the communities were blocked off and not able to access all of ferguson. once we stabilize, it's time to take inventory of where we are and how can ferguson move forward as a community? this has been devastating. once we take an internal inventory of where we are, the community can start looking forward to see where to go next. >> wesley, benjamin watson also writes i'm fearful because in the back of my mind although i'm a law-abiding citizen, i can be looked upon as a threat to those who don't know me. i will continue to have to go the extra mile to earn the benefit of the doubt. what's your reaction to that?

>> that's the reality of being black in america, regardless of what your income level is, we are still perceived as criminals and as aggressive in these situations. what ferguson has done is opened up the conversation more. i don't think the racial divide has widened. we were able to get a good view of where people are in this conversation. this is not a conversation that has been starting. maybe just the people who started to listen. >> you covered this from the beginning. you have been there and you are still there now. where do you see this protest movement going from here? >> there is much to be said for the scope and reach. once they find out, that's not what you are seeing.

and internationally, this has sparked the conversation as it deals with profiling and interactions between minority communities and communities that police them. as it deals with stereo tapes and prejudices on both sides. that's what they want to continue to happen. this idea that this didn't widen a gap, but it made clear the gap that existed. a lot of people argue that's a good thing. >> i want to thank you both for joining us. >> thank you. >> absolutely. still ahead, states of inequality. the five worst states to live for lgbt. it's beginning to look a lot like christmas in manhattan. look at this. the zamboni out on the ice at rockefeller plaza getting it ready for the skaters. stick with us. we'll be right back.

>> welcome back, everybody. developing news to bring from new jersey. there is a black friday protest under way in a wal-mart. a group of clergy and community leaders and workers calling for higher wages. they want a pay of $15 an hour and more full time jobs. we will keep an eye on the protest and bring you those developments. in the meantime, supporters of gay rights picked up momentum. 34 states and the district of columbia recognize same-sex marriage. two years ago only six states did. a new article describes the struggle still facing gay and lesbian americans and names the worst states for the lgbt community and some may surprise

you. here with me now is rolling stone reporter niko lane. thanks for being with us. we are not just talking about marriage rights. what are the other issues that are involved? >> some of the other issues i looked at were housing discrimination and employment and qualities that would affect everyone who lives in the state. the poverty rate or sometimes the obesity rate and education. all of these factors add up. >> you have them ordered by state and among the top five, number is mississippi. why is that? >> mississippi was an interesting choice in that a lot of factors put alabama over the top when you looked at it. alabama has five cities that all rank under a 10 score on the

municipal equality index. that would suggest that alabama would be the lowest being that they have the lowest ranking in terms of municipal quality index. for me, what stuck out about mississippi was how many factors made it a poor state to live in for just about everybody. lg if bt people are people. they have the highest poverty and the highest obesity rate and the fourth worst schools in the nation. all of those contribute to a poor quality of life. >> that is for anyone, but for the lgbt community in particular, why is this state number one? >> south haven is one of the few cities in the country to get a perfect zero on the municipal quality index. in no factor whatsoever is it a good city for lgbt people to live in. it has no protections at any level and often times cities

like that are openly hostile and it's rare to see any city rank that. it shows what it's like outside of the major city areas in mississippi. if you live in jackson things might be better, but anywhere else, it's going to be horrible. >> you talked about alabama, texas, louisiana. michigan is the only state outside the south that is on that list. why is michigan on the list some. >> michigan surprised me. my gut check reaction when i was compiling the list was to look for states like kentucky or somewhere like tennessee, states that you would think about being single. michigan was the one state that i heard on every single purpose's list when i talk to. lgbt rights advocates. i took a closer look and michigan has almost no

was. no one else was hurt. frightening moments at a thanksgiving celebration in south carolina. a group of 29 people gathered on a deck at a greenville home to take a holiday picture when the deck suddenly collapsed, falling 15 feet on to concrete. 22 people were taken to the hospital. senior citizens among them. none of the injuries were-threatening. two boying pulled out alive after being buried feet in snow. the boys were digging a snow fort when a snow plow came by and dumped more than several feet of snow on top of them. the boys didn't return home and police canvassed the neighborhood and something caught an officer's eye. >> at that point we figured we would take a couple of digs and

get the children. >> they used whatever they could to dig the boys out. they are hospitalized and expected to be a-ok. what a story. >> it is christmas in washington. a tradition with the arrival of this year's christmas tree. we will take you there live, next. (vo) nourished.

it runs in the family and not just the first family. quite pleased with this tree. sticking with the theme, president obama phoned u.s. service members and thanked them for their service and particularly in this year, he thanked them for the fight against ebola and isis as you know u.s. ramping up the fight against isis. the president has really no schedule to get back to work next week. defense secretary chuck hagel stepped down and he will have big battles with republicans on the horizon. the government funding bill comes out in the next two weeks. some republicans threatens to shut down the government over president obama's recent action on immigration reform. i have been speaking to folks on capitol hill. aides who say they are not going to go in that direction.

they want to make sure the government is funded. as you know last time there was a government shut down that had a backlash against republicans. they want to avoid that, but you can expect to see action or take legislative action reversing the steps on immigration reform. >> today the big business was receiving the christmas tree. i have no idea what would have happened if it was a thumbs down. can't send it back. it's there to stay. kristen welker at the white house. many americans are working off the thanksgiving dinner by heading out to the malls. a home cooked meal is out of reach for thousands of americans. businesses are rising to the occasion to provide holiday meals for those who cannot afford them.

his organization is helping from the heart. they served thousands of meals in orlando. thanks for being with us. it's great work thaw do. tell us about your event and how many meals were provided this thanksgiving. >> hi, betty. glad to be here. this was our 22nd annual helpings from the heart and thanksgiving feast for those less fortunate and the salvation army and presented by the corral. we served 17 and 18,000 meals. the demand was lower. lower gas pricing probably helped us this year. >> how long have you been doing this? >> 22 years. >> and in those 22 years, are there any particular stories that is stuck with you that you were able to meet on thanksgiving day? >> there so many people that we met over the years and so many stories and everyone has one.

one of the coolest things are the volunteers that we had. sometimes the volunteers were in line the year before and they turned out to be volunteers the next year. it takes many volunteers to put this together. they are very important to us. that's probably the greatest thing. >> absolutely. tell us about this inspiration. >> when i was a child, i was one of five. my mom was a single mom. we had meager beginnings anyway. she worked hard and the salvation army stepped down and provided thanksgiving dinners for us. we started giving back. >> paying it forward as they

imagine that it will be -- >> it's booming in these areas. >> it is booming. the demand for product is insatiable. they can't supply all the customers. they are coming from all directions. all ages over 21. men, women from tourists and locals. it's astonishing. i think the reality is that the market has always been there. it's been a black market and it's a legal market. >> we joke about it, but having too much cash is really a problem there. i want to read something that you cowrote in an article on msnbc.com saying all banks are federally regulated and the government said marijuana is illegal. thanks in colorado, banks can be fined heavily for doing business with traffickers. that poses a problem at the retail level leaving the retail owners with the question of how to deal with garbage bags full of money. how do you deal with that?

that is a safety concern if you are carrying around garbage bags of money, you can be a target. >> absolutely. if you talk to them, it's the number one problem that they have to deal with. it's the 21st century. people don't have big wads of cash. these people as you saw have to deal with that on a daily basis. >> how do they try deal with this? >> there is a fair amount of armed guards and trucks and there all kinds of secret places that they put their money. ultimately there is a rotating kind of bank system that works. i can get a bank account and until i make my first $10,000 deposit, nobody will say anything. once the deposit is made and they start investigating and find it's a marijuana company, they give me notice and they cancel the account and i move on. it's this musical chairs game with banks that they are all

dealing with. it won't change until somebody dies. it will require an act of congress to change the federal banking laws to feel comfortable doing business in this environment. it's one of the growing pains of an stlea is flipping a switch and the billion dollar industry exists. it's the most prominent that got the most attention. there is definitely a fear within the industry that this is a ticking clock that is inviting trouble. >> let's look at the numbers. they raked in $52 million in the industry?

there only 5 million people. as it expands to other states, they are authorized. >> what other states are getting on board? >> it's not as simple colorado and washington are legal so they must be the same. colorado and denver, there 208 stores that sell in the city of denver. seattle on the same day has one store. in denver it's the department of revenue. in washington it is run through the liquor control board that has been cautious. we heard that oregon and alaska have come on board. we expect they will have a roll out like colorado and much more readily available. each state that comes online -- >> in their own way.

thanksgiving leftovers. what are they? >> yeah, sure; betty and happy holidays. the three mistakes that people make a lot are first, storing the food correctly. stojakovic it safely to get the maximum shelf life. >> what do you mean? how do you store it correctly? >> you want to make sure for stuff like turkey, i like to store it in as big of pieces as possible. that extends the shelf life. it might be too late for that. they chop and diced everything. for the future like any time you are storing a protein, the bigger pieces you can keep it in, the longer shelf life. if you cool the food off a little bit before you store it, it doesn't need to be room temperature, but get a lot of the steam out of the dish and stuff like that. that will reduce the condensation in your storage device. you will get a better shelf life out of it. >> i know when it comes to

reheating that food, people make a mistake. you put it in there and put a number on the microwave and half is not even cooked or still frozen by the time we get it out of there. what are we doing wrong? >> yeah. my advice for reheating is to use a gentle heat. a lot of times people will max it out in the microwave. what you will end up with is either really dry overdone food or as you said, sometimes the centers will be really cold and you will have this mix of cold and super blazing hot. >> how do you fix that? >> i heat almost everything in the stove top or the oven on a low heat. >> that takes longer. now you know that. when i can get it out of the microwave in a minute, how long does it take in the oven? >> if you want to use a microwave. add a little bit of liquid. if you are reheating mashed potatoes or turkey, add a little

liquid like if you have cook being liquid. you can add that back and reheat it for 30 second bursts or something. the liquid will help distribute the heat through the dish. heat a little more evenly. >> that's a great idea. that's a big problem. how do we avoid being boring with all this food? >> people get stuck. i do this too. you think of something like mashed potatoes. it's mashed potatoes. i am going to eat mashed potatoes for a week because i made a gallon of it. what you have to think of is sometimes it helps to think of it as an ingredient rather than an end product. for something like mashed potatoes, i will add in an egg and flower and roll it as a dough. you end up and center scratch, that would take you an hour. since since you already have the

manners and we are noticing increased lines and taking people a little longer to get in and out. you are here to broud and look for the lest deals. they have a lot of interactive exhibits out for people to do that. holiday shoppers have the heptation, deserved or not, for being ultra competitive. this is the retailers who are battling it out to maximize profits. here at toys 'r us meant opening for black friday yesterday at 5:00 p.m. they are going to go through until midnight with deals throughout the day to keep shoppers coming back. out of the annual sales, 50% will come from this holiday period. >> yesterday we opened all of our stores at 5:00 p.m. we had around the door busters that went from 5:00 to 9:00. i was at the store and we had over 2,000 people lined up to walk in the store. they were lined up around the

block and across the nation, we had a few hundred people at all of the stores. they are a great start to the holiday season. >> shoppers are spending, spurred on in part by low gas prices. it is estimated for every penny that the prices drop, the u.s. economy will have about a billion dollars in disposable income. retailers are hoping that money finds their way into their stores. as for the hot toys this year, anything frozen is flying off the shelves. anything related to that movie. legos are huge and they're letting us tryout the toys. these are amazing bracelets. one of the hot items. when do you this, you sound like a jingle bell. in keeping with the season now. >> i will tell you what they were saying for toys 'r us. no wonder he is smiling big. a couple of stores here.

this is not the heavy snow we saw earlier on in the week. the snow is moving through in michigan and out of the chicago area. this is the beginning of the area. you will start to feel that through the next couple of days. that is out ahead of the next arctic front. you will be able to see we are getting temperatures that will be on the rise for the middle of the country down to the south. we will have temperatures in the 60s and the 70s. another cold wave will hit by early next week. we will have to watch out for that closely. an early step into winder, that's for sure. >> my relatives in los angeles, like 85 degrees. >> sounds so nice right now. >> we have to wait about six months for that. >> okay. thank you so much.

award in 2006. he also won the award back in 2010. it's a real honor to present them with this tree. it goes to the blue room in past years, it has been dedicated. that's a big theme here at the white house. yesterday president obama called u.s. service numbers who are purntly stationed overseas and thanked them in the fight against ebola as well as the fight against isis. that will continue to be an ongoing theme here leading up through christmas. speaking of themes, the big theme may be immigration. do you think the white house expects both short and long-term budget fights because of the executive order? >> they are gearing up for a fight. a big battle on the horizon. immigration is going to weigh heavily on that battle.

a lot of conservatives want to shut down over the fact that president obama announced action on immigration reform. i have been speaking with leadership aids who they they will not take that course and that could have a backlash. they will try to get that measure passed. they run out of fund funding at about two weeks. there is a push among leaders to get it passed and to try to take action against president obama on immigration in other ways. potentially suing him or passing legislation that would reverse what he said. here's the problem politically. they don't want to waste that politically. they own both chambers of commerce. they want to get things done on tax reform and trade bills. that is going to be a competing

factor we are going to be talking budget as soon as congress returns december 1st. >> thank you very much. kristen welker at the white house. a gunman in texas was killed after he opened fire on several downtown buildings near the busy 6th street entertainment district. it was a federal courthouse before he was shot by an officer who just completed a mounted horse patrol. >> the sergeant was right there getting ready to put the horses away for the night. he discharged at least one round with the shot. >> it's not clear if that was the fatal shot or he took his own life. no bystanders were hurt.

to take part with hash tags like blackout black friday and boycott black friday. activists are hoping to harness directive buying power and influence, change. joining me now with the latest on this, with a welcome to you, i know this idea took off after the grand jury's announcement, but you write that it appears to have been started weeks ago by the justice for michael brown leadership coalition that suggested this be a part of the no justice, no profit, right? >> we saw early mentions of this idea in early november. everywhere was focused on this indictment. the common framework we are hearing is black lives matter. they thought an indictment would affirm that sentiment and when they did not get the indictment they were protesting and hoping for, they said it doesn't matter. what about the money?

they aligned corporate america with the rest of america. it's not as specific as that. >> what have the organizers told them. they don't care about our pain. we are asking businesses to put political pressure on the leadership to do the right thing. are they boycotting all businesses and may be able to better handle the financial fallout from the boycott. >> yeah. a lot of the boycott and protests earlier were focused on the wal-marts and the targets and the big corporations that they align with corporate america and the powers that be. they are saying that where you should shop is you should shop at black owned businesses. people advertise themselves as

black owned businesses. they are circulating saying this is a black owned business and you should shop here the week of thanksgiving. spend your money here if you want to spend it. >> according to nielsen data, african-americans have a current buying power of $1 trillion, forecast for $1.3 trillion by 2017. they make up 126 shopping trips a year and nearly $60 billion in sales expected. how big of an impact can this have? >> you know, i think that we are looking at thousands of protesters compared to 140 million shoppers expected today. there is a lot of other factors that can affect sales and profits on black friday. even the small businesses. the weather and people without power who decide i don't want to get-up-and-go shopping. i don't have running water right now or it's too cold or they decide they will shop on

amazon.com versus getting out. how much you can quantify that this is a black friday blackout protest versus natural shopping behaviors. it's hard. i think the other thing that is really important here is that economic activism is as old as activism itself. usually it works when you are looking at a corporation and you want that to change specific things. you can boycott that corporation and rely on the desire for good press. profits to actually make change. >> well, i'm sure we are going to see someone tally up the numbers and see how this did in the wake of this black friday protest. thank you so much. >> meanwhile in ferguson, the national guard stood watch amid fears of violence. the streets were mostly quiet. no arrests were made. they are getting a lot of attention with this picture of michael brown's family gathered

for the first thanksgiving without him. one chair was left empty with a shirt bearing his face draped over it. they made their voices heard. seven demonstrateors were arrest and we are learning what could be ahead for officer darren wilson. his attorney said his client will likely never be a law enforcement officer again and will work for a new career. a law professor at the university of louisville. wilson's attorney said he may go back to school and carve out something new for himself, but how worried should he be about federal charges? we know the justice department was conducting an investigation. >> the u.s. department of justice launched an investigation against officer wilson in august. what they are trying to determine is whether or not officer wilson violated michael brown's civil rights similar to what we saw with the trayvon martin case. however the likelihood that they will actually pursue the charges

are very slim simply because they would have to demonstrate that the shooting was racially motivated which is a very difficult thing to prove. >> what about robert mccullough. we have seen the press conference and i want to read the reaction to that. this is dana mill bank who writes. he acknowledged his team was serving as defense lawyers, noting that prosecutors challenged and confronted witnesses with priest statements and evidence that credited their accounts. then the times editorial board said he is widely viewed as being in the pockets of the police made matters infinitely worse by handling the investigation in the worst possible way. the times cites his refusal to step aside and could have been appointed by the governor. they point out to what they call a highly unorthodox approach to the proceeding. the way he timed the

announcement of the decision. what do you make of this? >> i was appalled by his handling of the case. i spoke with my colleague in houston and we were just in awe that he would allow a suspect to testify at a grand jury trial knowing that the suspect meaning officer wilson could not be cross examined by brown's attorney. i felt like i was watching a defense attorney dressed up like a prosecuting attorney. he showed no empathy and seemed biased. it was chilling. >> legally speaking, what other avenues can michael brown's family take? what do you think will come next? >> after they have a period of healing will pursue a civil trial as well as the ferguson police department. it's a lower standard of proof as opposed to a beyond reasonable doubt. they have to show by the preponderance of the evidence

>> they are traditional and have been in the pentagon and managed budgets. they might be also names that would be krred positive for the obama administration. they want someone who will be able to be in those kind kinds of discussions with the security council and the white house's own national security staff. someone like bob or ash carter who has experience also maybe won't have too many differing opinions. they may be positive for the white house. may be someone who had high profile leadership and that would of course fit the billing of having the first female secretary. >> of those are on the list too.

he was brought in after cuts to be a budget fix. they have the wars going on. we have the fight against isil and syria. that and other potential escalating issues around the globe. it's going to be a big job. someone who has that heading of military units. >> speaking of politicians and said no right out of the gate. how about adam smith? what would be the likelihood of his nomination? >> it's a possibility that he is on the house armed services committee and has a background in dealing with the issues from the armed services committee standpoint. he is an interesting name.

windchills where yesterday we had a brutal day of these windchills where temperatures were feeling welt below zero. those temps will begin to relax here over the next couple of days and i think you're going to see the improvements quite quickly. as we go forward through the day today, you'll see the windchills have come up bo zero for minneapolis, up through areas of north dakota. look at the windchills, 30 degrees in new york city. much better than yesterday. and going forward, we will start to see big improvements across the board. as this windchill begins to lift out and we have better forecasts ahead. as we go through minneapolis, 26 today, look at this, 39, that doesn't sunday impressive, but yesterday's high is 10, and then we goo right back down with the temps. heading into areas like washington, d.c., we'll be looking at temperatures on the rebound. as we go to dallas, you'll be able to see the forecast there. we are looking at short sleeves and shorts weather, for a little

has this opening weekend for the white house been so far? >> reporter: it's been filled with a lot of tradition, as you pointed out. the first lady and the first daughters welcomed the first christmas tree. this is a confer, about 19 feet high and it was presented by chris botek, he's a second generation christmas tree farmer based out of lehigh in pennsylvania, in addition to this year, he won the national christmas tree award back in 2010, and his parents won it back in 2006. these edition of the national christmas tree association, dates all the way back to 1966. so it's a really great part of the holiday tradition here at the white house. but really they have been celebrating for the past few days, on wednesday, president obama pardoned the white house turkey's mac and cheese.

protest. there were no visible protests and police say no arrests were made. and an image that's getting a lot of attention today, is this picture of michael brown's family gathered around their table for their first thanksgiving without him. i am joined by "the washington post," wesley lowry is in ferguson and has spent a significant amount of time there since the shooting back in august. members of the communities in daal i . >> national guard will be on hand to protect the businesses, like this one behind us, they failed to arrive. besides highlighting the degree to which our own business

community was hurt, i am demachbding answers as to why missouri's national guard was not here to protect us when we had been assured they would be. >> have you spoken with the governor? >> i have not spoke within the governor. >> the mayor says he has contacted the governor, but still has not heard from him. what do you make of that? >> reporter: of course this is a very common complaint we're hearing from business owners and officials here locally, as in the weeks to the drum up to the decision was coming, we had heard constantly that the national guard ask going to be on hand, and what governor nixon said and the police chief said, they were going too protect lives and property, people and property. what ended up happening is that the national guard protected land marks and court buildings, but they did not protect small businesses. and that has business owners furious.

>> in your piece yesterday, you wrote and i'm quoting here, it was the worst of thanksgivings yet it was the best of thanksgivings too. we reported yesterday that churches were expecting crowds two or three times larger than normal for thanksgiving. is what you saw? >> reporter: it's sercertainly t i saw, and in that exact piece, we had stories along the line that michael brown's family along with darren wilson's family were celebrating the holidays. sometimes the best way, the biggest things that makes you remember what you're grateful is the biggest loss. and a lot of members of the community, being psychologically spent and physically spent, to many people who have -- it's that type of backdrop that makes them cherish their family and their friends evenmore. >> a lot of people are hunkering down for the thanksgiving holiday, maybe doing some

shopping, but what is your sense of what will happen after the holiday is over? do you expect protesters will be back in force as they were earlier this week. >> i certainly think so, i think we'll see them on monday on the first business day, we also have to remember the ferguson commission, this body created by governor jay nixon to deal with the deeper systemic issues here. while much of the nation may kind of turn the corner, they have given the story, but the feel of ferguson have not given up on this, this is still their city and they have bigger issues to deal with. >> a lot of protesters are encouraging people in other cities not to shop on the biggest shopping day of the year. do you know what ferguson community members are say about this type of movement. >> reporter: we see people who

we know that thanksgiving and black friday shopping go hand in hand, but in colorado, black friday is taking on a whole new meaning this year, that is because this is the first holiday shopping period since the state allowed stores to sell recreational marijuana. and many of the state's new pot stores are taking advantage of that by offering deals and discounts on everything from prerolled joints to marijuana infused pumpkin pies, they're calling it green friday and it's all part of the rapidly growing marijuana industry. as demand for pot builds, a company called american x just launched it's first of the of it's kind sort of commonities exchange in the weed industry. msnbc's ronan pharaoh has the

story. >> reporter: your company created the american cannabis exchange or ace, as i understand it, this is to the fully electronic market place for cannabis retailers to buy and sell inventory, how exactly is that going to work? and how exactly is it legal? >> currently what we with do is we follow the doesn't laws and infrastructure in place, so what we do is we operate state by state, so eventually this is going to be become a national product where we can allow everybody to transact, but if you currently just look at colorado, we have an infrastructure in both colorado and california where we allow this transaction to take place legally. >> how are you going to chance for the good news, how does this stay legal if it's a national marketplace. >> we're building it state by state in anticipation of it
