9:00 am
a hands up don't shoot pose leading to a demand for an apology from st. louis police. madam president talks about playing the commander in chief. throughout history have been the real power and have been the face of power. >> good day. i'm andrea mitchell in washington. ray rice has been reinstated. an ash traitor overturned the indefinite suspension on friday. in an exclusive interview, they asked about the chances her husband will play again. >> what's it going to take in your mind for another team to
9:01 am
take a chance on ray rice? >> for them to look past the situation which i know is going to be hard. at the end of the day, he is a football player and that's what they should be focused on. he has prison himself as a football player for seven years. there is no question of what he can do on the field. >> do you think the owner and fans of the team can get that images from the elevator out of their minds? >> we know it's going to take work. once he shows them who he is and they reach out to people here. they find out things he has done, i think it could help. >> joining me now is the host of sirius xm sports radio challenge. thanks for being with us. this is so complicated and personal and public and so uncomfortable all at the same time. who would sign him. there four weeks left in the
9:02 am
regular season. >> not now at least. no team is going to risque distraction this late in the season to sign a running back that is on his way down in terms of his career. if i were ray rice and i was advising him, i would have him act here. i would release a statement or meet the media and say i am not interested in playing football this year. i'm interested in getting my and my marriage back together. i will be ready i think, i hope, maybe for next season and try to join a team in june or july. it's much easier to have that distraction and if you are the rice camp which there is a camp of lawyers and of course advisers and pr strategists. why not take the approach of this. nobody is going to sign him anyway. why not act and take yourself out of consideration for now? >> that's exactly kopt dictory to what he seems to be doing. he talked to matt lauer and they reported in that conversation he said what he is doing is keeping
9:03 am
himself in shape and letting his agent deal with it. being ready in case someone called. >> it would be great if he stayed out of the spotlight for a little bit and got his in order. his wife spoke out and now it's his time to say i'm not worried about football. football needs to come second. there is too much of is football coming first for ray rice. they talked about whether this is a pattern of abuse. >> let me ask you directly and bluntly. prior to what we have seen in that elevator, was there ever any incident of violence in your
9:04 am
relationship with ray or any incident of violence since that elevator incident? >> she was with her mother in that interview. what she said indicated that roger goodell knew all along. it was double jeopardy and reinstated him. is there a big burden on roger goodell to prove that he is the guy who should stay in this job? >> in theory, yes. this is where i challenge people.
9:05 am
he or she will have to deal with domestic violence issues. everywhere is watching. i am not going to say it turned anyone on, but so many people are hung up as to whether or not roger goodell did or didn't know. do we think 32 owners are going to fire him, a $32 million a year employee? do we think they are going to fire them? even if they do, it doesn't take away what happened in that elevator between ray and jenay rice. it doesn't take away the other issues relative to domestic violence in the past. they are focusing on the issue that affects the nfl, but the country as well. >> what do you think about the pr campaign with the public service announcements and the way they handled this? >> we criticized them for not trying to deal with this.
9:06 am
they are going the other way and criticize them for dealing with this. >> i think they are very effective. i was asking what your take on it is. >> i agree with you. they are trying. i think it's a step in the right direction. they are not going to be perfect. they had years of not being perfect. they are at least trying now. i think we have to give them some credit for maybe affecting that one person. here's what i hope. somebody looked at that video and said no matter what they saw with jenay rice, if i ever thought about hitting a female before, i will never think about it again because that was video. roger goodell can't control that. everybody watching and listening thinks they can control that. that's the message that has to be out there. the analysts debate whether or not they need to be the face of that because i don't think they want to. you and i would love to see them help other people and prevent it from happening.
9:07 am
if they don't want to, what are we supposed to do some. >> thank you so much. coming up, a lot of people would say that concussions in football not just at the professional level have been a bigger problem for the league. thank you, evan. just moments ago, ohio state coach spoke publicly about osu player who tragically was found dead this weekend. >> extremely close game and leans on each other. someone steps up and makes a tremendous play and said something. yes, it's excuses and to overcome the incredible tragedy that happened last night.
9:08 am
>> they said he had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds. he had suffered from depression. joining me is an advocate for the brain injuries. you have become so outspoken about what you are going for and what you went through. we don't know of course in this case. there were a lot of indicators. tell me what you think is involved with people who suffer as you yourself had this kind of
9:09 am
brain injury. it truly affects who you are as a person. it's the deterioration of the identity. one who struggles with memory. at 33 years old, it's where we find myself. like the tragedy with the coast. the fact that there have been behavioral changes and the fact that he is texting his mother and explaining to her that the concussions have put his mind and erkz motional situation at risk. this is why this injury is such a serious issue. why we need to focus on how we create environments that we can take care of these players. you mentioned that terrible, sad text to his mom. saying i'm sorry if i am an
9:10 am
embarrassment, but these concussions have my head all messed up. that was an indicator to her. she feels that the concussions led to depression and this is medically known to be the cause. he went out inexplikably one morning or night and was missing for all those days. if we find out he took his own life, he will be added to a list of about eight player who is have taken their lives in connection with a concussion history. they have been diagnosed with chronic discovery process with them. our prayers go out to his family. this is what happened with
9:11 am
player who is suffer multiple concussions. there is nobody there. who do these guys go to? there is not an appropriate concussion care program that is available. neither at the nfl level or the ncaa level. for the players to go to who are struggling with this. the only place he can go was with his mom at 1:25 early in the morning. these players need to have more accountability and there needs to be a better support system for those players who are struggling. we will find out i'm sure in the next couple of weeks here if ohio state university knew about the struggles. >> me about your earlier experience. i think you suffered five concussions. i don't know if it was when you were playing for the colts or at what point. you recorded music because of
9:12 am
your memory loss as a way of reaching your children. talk to me about how you are dealing with it. i feel blessed as a man who had passions beyond football. music was therapeutic and gave me an outlet to express myself when having to walk away from a game that i love. i began struggling with memory issues. literally gaps that are no longer there. it's hard to explain how you can be a groomsman in your best friend's wedding. it's gone. i can look at the pictures and see myself there singing in his wedding, but i have no recollection.
9:13 am
these are the types of situations that began occurring in my life and we chose to walk away. music was an outlet for that. i wrote a song called you will always be my girls. my love letter to my wife and my daughters from the perspective of the aging nfler who may not remember their name some day. we turned it into a music video and really connect people to the importance of their brain health. if we can get organizations from the billion dollar organizations and making the money on the externality of concussions. they are a part of this game whether you like it or not. it's like getting in the car. accident and injuries are getting into a car. we need to find ways that these organizations can take better long-term care of their players.
9:14 am
if i can help do that with my story and make people care more about their brain health, i think we can find movement in that. >> do you think any of the new rules precipitated by the lawsuit, did that change anything? is it better for current players some. >> well, if we are talking nfl settlement, i think one of the great things to the players who need it right now. my concern and my objection was at 33 years old, i am concerned that the money is not going to be there. if i go through a diagnosis, when you look at the ncaa laud, it provides mandated guidelines. there is no rules that are going to be forcing individual schools to follow them.
9:15 am
that's the accountable we are missing here. i think an answer could be insurance. there should be these players especially at the ncaa level when they are not making money should be taken care of. he and his family will not receive anything. there is no benefits for them. even though if in fact we find a diagnosis, there is nothing there for him. we need to make sure that if concussions are an externality of football which they are, and we want to watch the game we love, we have to ensure the long-term brain care for these players. it should be mandatory. organizations that are making billions should jump at the chance. this is not a shoulder.
9:16 am
this enables us to be the people we are. it's an important issue. >> thank you for speaking out and everything you are doing. >> with this protest with players out of bounds. the debate about that is coming up next. you are watching "andrea mitchell reports" only on msnbc. curling up in bed with a favorite book is nice. but i think women would rather curl up with their favorite man. but here's the thing: about half of men over 40 have some degree of erectile dysfunction.

9:21 am
they were pleased to see this and there was concern at times among the protest leaders that didn't think that some local celebrities bought into this and weren't showing support. the people i was talking to were happy to see this. >> of course the union was very outspoken because the nfl asked them to help with law enforcement essentially around the stadium and in the stadium and relied heavily on relationships. probably for them at least, the hands up don't shoot gesture took place. we all know about that disagreement. what next for ferguson? i know it was quiet last night and protests around the country in d.c. on the 14th street bridge on 295 yesterday.
