larger crowds wednesday night when the grand jury decision was announced possibly fueling the anger. reports that key evidence in the case will remain secret, because the district attorney in charge of the case has not asked the judge to release all of the grand jury transcripts like he props promised. they're not just marching in the streets, therapy dying in them. a scene in pittsburgh and temple university showing solidarity with eric garner family and also with the family of eric brown. more on the fallout and the next steps officials are taking. >> reporter: calls for justice and reform filled the streets of major cities. in new york, thousand us of protesters organized at multiple locations including the brooklyn bridge. in chicago, demonstrators briefly halted freeway traffic. and in the nation's capital, marching and chanting in mass. a smaller and more subdued crowd gathered at the site where eric

garn e died lighting candles and leaving rosaries, and stopping traffic in the downtown area chanting garner's last words. >> i can't breathe! >> reporter: and captured on video. the officers arm around his neck as he was forced to the ground. one of four videos shown to the grand jury. garner family believe it should have been enough for an indictment, but the head of the police officer's union defended officer pantaleo saying garner would still be alive had he not resisted arrest. >> while bringing that person to the ground, yes, they said, we can't breathe, but the police officers an the ems did what they're supposed to do at that time. if you're speaking, you can breathe. >> reporter: the grand jury decision and protests are sparking discussion among government leaders. new york city's mayor vowed additional training for police. >> fundamental questions are being asked and rightfully so, about how we respect people's rights. how we reduce the use of force

of scrambled politics. joining me now from washington, the reporter for "the hill." kevin good morning. could we see your dance moves or no? >> a pretty good dancer, if i do say so myself. happy friday. thanks for having me. >> start with the expected nominee for secretary of defense. ashton carter. what is the feeling in d.c., how will he fit into the president's inner circle in a way chuck hagel did not? >> a great question. this would be the sixth person to fill this position in, during the president's term. so six people. but the consensus here in washington is that ashton carter would be an excellent choice for this pick. pease someone with a lot of experience. the number two at the agency, or the department, and, you know, widespread bipartisan support i'm hearing on capitol hill. really folks on both sides of the aisle coming to defend him, including senator john mccain and the republican camp.

so i would expect smooth sailing for his confirmation if he is nominated officially. >> and we are a week away now from the government running out of money leading to a possible government shutdown. >> a second shutdown. >> you agree, seems to be less of a focus on this one compared to past shutdown threats. really, how close are we to that really happening? >> i think there will not be a government shutdown. bottom line, how much support house speaker john boehner will get from democrats in the house, and then will the senate go along with it? we've seen signals from senate majority leader harry reid he will be onboard for this. i think it's going to pretty much just extend things until next fall, keep the government open until next fall, and also, however, divide this immigration issue until early next year. and so that the agencies that president obama needs funding for to carry out his executive immigration orders will only be funded until early next year,
