good morning. i'm mika b, thomas roberts has e morning off. it is not the 8th guys, isn't it the 12th? we begin in the protests that have turned violent. the unrest began after one protester smashed the window of a radioshack store. others in the group of up to 400 people vandalized other stores and police cars. they used tear gas after protesters descended on the state freeway and blocked traffic. officers were deployed after explosives were thrown. they deny that was the case. demonstrations are largely peaceful in new york city. hundreds staged rallies or die-in protests at city landmarks. macy's and the toys are us.

and players in the nfl, making statements. reggie bush, and efrl other players, including members of the st. louis rams wore shirts or apparel with the words won't breathe on hem. derrick rose wore a similar shirt one day early. new york mayor refused to say whether or not he agreed with the decision not to indict daniel pantaleo, the officer who put the chokehold on eric garner. in an interview, he continued to defend, telling his african-american son, dante, to be careful how he interacted with police officers. >> it's different for a white child. that's just the reality in this country. with dante, very early on, with my son, we said, look, if a police officer stops you, do everything he tells you to do. don't move suddenly, don't reach for your cell phone. because we knew there was a greater chance it was i interpreted if it was a young

man of color. i have talked to a lot of families of color, but i have said things like this before, and they said over and over again that someone is acknowledging that they have to have that conversation with their sons. it's painful. there's a contradiction. we to want look up to figures of authority, and everyone knows the police protect us. but there's that fear there's a moment of misunderstanding with a young man of color and that young man may never come back. >> 47% of americans believe law enforcement applies different standards to white and african-americans. that includes 82% of blacks, but less than 40% of whites. and the widespread protests over eric garner and michael brown's death are prompting presidents past and present to weigh in on the state of race in america. in an interview to air on b.e.t., president obama says it's an issue that will not be solved overnight. >> this is something deeply

rooted in our society and history. but the two things that are going to allow us to solve it, number one, is the understanding that we have made progress. and so it's important to recognize, as painful as these incidents are, we can't equate what's happening now to what was happening 50 years ago. the second thing that i insist of these young people is we have to be persistent. typically progress is in steps. it's in increments. >> the remarks come as a poll show 46% of americans disapprove of president obama's response of the grand jury decisions in new york and ferguson and a bloomberg poll shows that race relations have gotten worse under obama. 55% of whites and 45% of blacks. former president george w. bush is weighing in, showing that the reaction shows more must become so that race becomes a less

divisive part of life. >> the verdict was hard to understand. but i hadn't seen all the details. but it's sad that -- that race continues to play such an -- you know, kind of an emotional divisive part of life. calls into question what needs to be done to heal -- to get the country united again. and as they mentioned, and i agree, there's been tremendous progress based on race. but these incidents show there needs to be more. >> this morning, there is backlash over the failed raid to save the life of photo journalist luke somers in yemen. the navy s.e.a.l. team 6 team got the green light to rescue him, but as we report, things quickly took a turn for the worse. >> senior administration officials say friday night navy s.e.a.l.s landed about two miles from the target, secretly approaching a cluster of

buildings. but their cover was blown, sparking a fire fight, giving them time to shoot the hostages. and it is believed a noise, possibly a dog, alerted the hostage takers. >> reports indicate both captives eventually died of gun shots from their al qaeda guards. it was the second unsuccessful attempt to rescue him. family members say they are angry, because, quote, if there had not been a rescue attempt, he would be alive. there were threats on his life before, but never carried out. a south african charitable group had arraigned a $200,000 ransom for peter korkie. he was set to be handed off, texting his wife, yolanda, once a captive herself. but she got a different piece of news. her husband was dead. and there are disputes over

whether civilians were killed, the figure is as high as eight. but they are unaware of civilian deaths. outgoing defense secretary chuck hagel defended the attempt, and there's bipartisan support in washington. rolling stone is dealing with blowback from all sides as the magazine changes the story following the sweeping expose of a an allege gang rape at the university of virginia. it drew global attention to allegations that stunned the campus. but on friday, it issued a note to the readers, casting doubt on the story, and acknowledging it never reached out to the men accused of the crime out of deference to the victim. rolling stone said in part we should not have made this agreement with jackie and worked harder to convince her that the truth would have been better served by getting the other side of the story. the note also said our trust in her was misplaced. but that line also sparked

backlash with critics saying that the woman was being blamed. later rolling stone altered the apology, removing the line about misplaced trust. and writing, quote, this, these mistakes are on rolling stone, not on jackie. we apologize to anyone affected by the story and continue to investigate the events of that evening. the magazine also acknowledged differences in the story first reported by the "washington post." a student who came to jackie's aid that night now said she did not appear physically injured as told by rolling stone. an alleged attacker was the name of a student who belongs to a different fraternity. rolling stone's reporting had far-reaching consequences. it prompted uva to suspend all fraternity activities and brought renewed attention to uva and dozens of other universities

possibly mishandling these cases. the police are also involved. they dispute the claim, but greek organizations are calling on the university to allow their activities to resume. six prisoners held at guantanamo bay for over a decade have arrived in south america as refugees. they had been cleared for release since 2009. but the united states struggled to find a country to accept them before oour a guy took them. none were formally charged. it's the latest effort in a push from president obama to close the prison at guantanamo bay. it was a campaign promise, and the largest single transfer of detainees since 2009. the inmate population is down to 136, the lowest number since the camp opened in 2002. there is a battle brewing on capitol hill over a senate report expected to condemn the cia for using torture after the

9/11 attacks. the report was expected to be released this week, and democratic senator dianne feinstein, the outgoing chair of the intelligence committee, is fight to make that possible. but john kerry said the report will put americans in danger and asked her to delay the release. those concerns were echoed by republican congressman mike rogers, the outgoing chair of the house intelligence committee. >> i think this is a terrible idea. so our foreign partners are telling us this will cause violence and deaths. our foreign leaders have approached the government, you do this, this will cause violence and deaths. our own intelligence community has assessed that this will cause violence and deaths. think of the cartoons in denmark and how many people died as a result. think of the burning of the korans and how many people died as a result. they will use this to incite violence. >> former cia director michael hayden is speaking out, denying

they lied about the enhanced interrogation techniques. we will be on that on morning joe. a massive typhoon in the philippines, now heading to the capital. the death toll has been minimal, with at least three people confirmed dead. more than a million people on the move seeking shelters in churches and schools. homes have been washed away. flood waters continue to rise. more than 30 million people have been affected by this storm so far. >> we turn now to business and record highs for stocks last week. after news that 300,000 jobs were added to the economy. that prompted the economy. what are investors watching for this week? >> the numbers were great. 321,000, overall this year, without the december figure, we had 2.65 million jobs created in the united states. this is great news and has been. but there's a missing ingredient. and that has been average hourly

wages. the average american hasn't been seeing the benefit, no pay rises. now that's beginning to change a little bit. that's quite exciting for many people in the market as well. now some of the analysts, the economists, they could go up 3.1% in 2015. that's the highest in ten years. as far as they are concerned, giving back a little bit of ground. the concern isn't the u.s., it's the asian and european data that's underwhelming. americans are taking advantage of low prices of fuel. global oil prices coming off aggressively. gas prices in the last two weeks down 12 cents. the regular gasoline on an average basis in the u.s. is . $2.72 a gallon. san francisco, $3.04 in san francisco, but albuquerque, $2.38, that is the cheapest in the country. >> there's good news for travelers who use new york city airports. i can't imagine what that is. >> well, i mean, like you as

time now for a quick check on the morning's other headlines. at one time polls showed that mary landrieu could hold on to the senate seat in louisiana, but she lost badly to republican challenger bill cassidy, 12 points short. it's the bitter conclusion to an

election cycle that saw democrats lose nine seats in the senate, and hands a majority in the house of 246 seats to the republicans. former president george w. bush said his brother, jeb, would beat hillary clinton in a 2016 presidential contest. in an interview he joked that his now brotherly relationship with bill clinton makes her his ster sister-in-law. but he would bet on his brother. >> he knows i want him to run. if i need to reiterate it, i will. run, jeb. >> you talked about bill clinton and his relationship with your father and how it developed. your mother as well. he's your brother from another mother. what does that make hillary clinton to the bush family? >> my sister-in-law. >> interesting. do you think that your brother could run against your sister-in-law? >> yeah.
