8:00 am
good morning everyone. i'm tamron hall. this is "newsnation." a computer glitch in london has forced officials to close the air space over london. this is a pretty interesting situation. one, they're not sure what caused this malfunction, but also, the sheer number of flights at this hour, at this moment impacted by this computer glitch is very startling. keir simmons is live in london and tom costello is covering this as it impacts travel in general. she he's in washington, d.c. >> tamron, good morning. let me update. just as we go on-air here we're told the air space over london is opened up. but that traffic volumes are being restricted in accordance with capability. that's from the national air traft service here in the u.k. that run the air space. it's the froufl here. just some detail the airport to
8:01 am
the north of london said it's having problems. to the south of london having problems. it is accepting flights but flights aren't taking off. most crucially heathrow airport to the west seems to be having problem fl problem. there are some reports there are no flights leaving or landing at heathrow. the numbers there around 1300 flights air transport movements they're called. a few years ago the numbers from heathrow airport. 82 airlines serving 180 countries. as tom will tell you, tamron, heathrow is a crucial hub for flights leaving the united states trying to get to europe, trying to get to the middle east it will quickly be causing huge problems for many passengers. >> what will we know on the best
8:02 am
day heathrow is a mad house. a complicated airport. let's get back to the issue of the power outage. what do we know beyond that brief description of what may have happened here? >> unfortunately that's it. it handles about 200,000 square miles or so 5,000 flights a day. they're reporting that computer issue or power issue is behind what is happening today. so you've got not only london heathrow affected but the other airports surrounding london as well. london being the busiest airport in all of europe. followed by paris, frankfurt, and amsterdam. you can imagine the backup that is going to be happening and is happening right now across all of europe into the netherlands and belgium and france and germany and also ireland. but then significantly for americans, flights into and out of you would expect london from new york, to lax, chicago,
8:03 am
miami, all of these flights are likely to be effected. we're going to be watching this closely to see if we expect delays and/or cancellations. the other parallel here we need recall is the significant impact we saw just about a month and a half ago with the fire in chicago that shut down the major air traffic control center for chicago o'hare and the air spaces surrounding it. and the impact we saw for days in the united states. there is no, to our knowledge, no fire or any sort of that kind of an issue in london right now, but it does underscore how vulnerable these air traffic control systems are when something happens in a key apar of the system. >> how are passengers being updated? >> well, the crucial question to start with the passengers currently in the air, tamron in flights hoping to land at heathrow. every one of the aircraft will have a plan for what to do. the airport to the north, for
8:04 am
example, has capacity on any given day. so there are orr airports in the north of england. they may want to divert some flights toward the european continent. there will be those flights that are most of the way, most of their journey from the states into the u.k. over the atlanta. they'll need to deal with the passengers and think about how to address the backlog of passengers, how to get people on to new flights and the trouble with heathrow is it runs at such high capacity that when things start to go wrong, it takes time to kind of fix them and basically to get people back to their loved ones and families. >> particularly scrambling to find out the cause of the problem. according to the associated press, tom, they're reporting most passengers at heath row seemed unaware of the issues until, obviously, they were walking on the plane. imagine if you were in the sky what we've heard in different situations you're updated by the pilot.
8:05 am
still, they can't explain what has happen there had and perhaps these flights will be able to land given the air space is open. we understand it's restricted. >> yeah. i think the proper language is severely restricted. they wanted to get the planes down that had to get down immediately for fuel issues or whatever. and so that's why they're saying it's not completely closed but significantly restricted to get the planes down. keir mentioned you have gatwick, london city airport. i used to live in london. those airports are likely to be affected. and of course, you have ireland that can pick up so. slack here for the flights that are in bound to the u.k. because they can't make it or be delayed significantly. you go to dublin or brussels. by the way, euro control, which oversees the entire european network of air traffic controller that's based in brussels and they're monitoring this. and trying to figure out how to
8:06 am
ensure those planes that are now backed up across europe where are they going to go or do they turn around and go back or park them somewhere at the nearby airport. >> tom costello, thank you. >> there are people talking -- i'm seeing people say on twitter they are on-air craft at the n runway heath row. it looks as if this has happened suddenly. and people have been left just exactly where they are. even if they boarded the aircraft. thank you very much for the update. we'll continue to update the audience as we learn more information. to breaking weather news. right now there are fears of massive mudslides as a deadly storm moving across southern california. hours of heavy rain caused rock and mudslides just outside of los angeles. several homes were damaged and first responders are now going door to door checking on
8:07 am
residents. ten inches of rain fell on the west coast yesterday and there have been reports of high water rescues and people trapped in their homes by mud. in oregon at least two people were killed by falling trees. milk bill karins joins us now. the damage is incredible here. >> yeah. we're watching the effect of the most powerful storms to go through california in five years. california used to deal with storms like this practically ere winter. ever since we started the historic drought, we haven't seen anything like this. it's needed but we goat see the effect of mother nature. this is the before picture. this is 94% of the state of california in severe drought. now we have the big rain event. we'll get the new updated map next week. all indications this is a just a little drop in the bucket. it will not come close to knocking us out over the drought. lakes that went down hundreds of feet only went up about five to ten feet. it was significant. so let's not minimize it.
8:08 am
we needed it. there were communities getting water delivered because their wells dried up. for them this is great. we are watching as far as the heavy rain that shifted south wards. los angeles your morning commute has been a lot of nightmare. we had about inch and a half of rain in downtown los angeles. san diego is getting in the mix. same with ocean side picking up about a half inch. we'll watch the rain rates dropping. that's important. the areas that had the burns won't be -- this is the second big storm over 7 inches in san francisco. the record, by the way, the most rain they've had in december was 15 inches. again, they can get historically a lot of rain. there is more on the way come monday and tuesday. but it does not look to be like a block buster rain event. we'll s i mean, it's hard because, tamron, for five years we've been saying we want the rain.
8:09 am
we don't want people losing their homes and stuff. >> absolutely. and the threat of the mudslides as a result of the fires that ravaged the region. it's just very bad situation for. we wish the best for everyone. thank you very much, bill. the repercussions of the massive cyber attack are being felt beyond the gates of sonny. the embarrassing e-mail exchange was one of several thousand leaked this week. it's part of the cyber attack. the impact even marred last night's preview of the "the interview." the movie largely the reason behind the attack. joe fryer has more. >> the theater marquee proposed a huge premier but the red carpet felt somewhat empty. billy bush attended the
8:10 am
screening. >> i've never seen a premier like this. sony was trying not to celebrate -- not make it a spect call. >> the massive attack exposed personal information like social security numbers and salaries for employees, stars, and execs plus private commune communications including an e-mail exchange between producer scott ruden and amy pascal wondering what movies president obama might enjoy. they mentioned films featuring african-american stars. i think the cull already of hollywood will probably change. i think people are thinking twice what they put in e-mails. i think studios are thinks twice. >> ruden an pascal issued

apologies. federal investigators are trying to identify the hackers who call themselves guardians of peace. >> bhoefr did this is definitely personal and they're seeing a victim. they've beaten up sony and kicking it again and again and again. we don't know when it's going to stop. >> that was joe fryer reported. i'm join bade writer of people magazine. amy pascal reached out to reverend al sharpton and jesse jackson to begin what was described as the healing process in her apology as pointed out by joe. she's saying she is embarrassed. the same we're hearing from
8:12 am
ruden. but this scandal has gone far past personal and social security. >> exactly. it's going to cost sony a lot of money in the long run. what actors want to work with sony. what directors, what scripts they'll get. it's not something about an embarrassing big e-mail. it's a big business problem. >> shonda rhymes one of the most powerful names in hollywood sent out a tweet and said calling sony comments racially insensitive remarks -- this comes on the heels of chris rock also talking about a lack of diversity. so these comments that are seen as racially insensitive go beyond president obama. it almost ripped the scab off the dirty secrets in hollywood that is rarely discussed. >> exactly. it's no secret that minority actors have a harder time
8:13 am
getting their projects green lighted. now we're seeing why. we're seeing, you know, and yes, you can say it was a joke all you want. there are people who are going to be offended by this. sony is going to have to make a decision. >> we know the remarks were not just about race. angelina jolie referred to as a spoiled brat. kevin hart took to associasocia to defend himself. >> some is going to be time. time needs to elapse and people will start forgetting about this. but, you know, they're going have to think about what their internal corporate culture is. and what are they going to say in e-mails? and i'm sure everybody would be embarrassed if our e-mails were shown for everybody to see. but some of the things they said
8:14 am
were about their money making stars and they can't do that anymore. >> all right. we'll see what happens next and if there are more e-mails and information to come. thank you very much for joining us. we turn to the drama still unfolding on capitol hill over avoiding a government shut down. today the senate will take up the $1.1 trillion funding bill approved by the house late last night. it passed the house by a margin of 219-206 with 57 democrats voting for it. >> big bank lobbyists are hoping that congress will allow wall street to once again gamble with taxpayer money. by reversing a provision that prohibits banks from using
8:15 am
taxpayer ensured funds, bank deposits to engage risky trading activity. >> and nancy pelosi broke with president obama who spent the day reportedly twisting arms urging passage. >> this is a moral hazard. we're being asked to vote for a moral hazard. why is this an appropriations bill? because it was the price to pay to get an appropriations bill. i'm enormously disappointed that the white house feels the only way they can get a bill is to go along with this. >> joining me live chris van hollen of maryland. the top democrat on the house budget committee. thank you for your time, congressman. very strong words from speaker nancy pelosi, congressman maxine waters and you as well. you voted no on this. you have harry reid talking about the good things in this bill. your reaction?
8:16 am
>> tamron, i'm sorry to report this is really congress at the absolute worse. yes, of course we should pass a funding bill for the united states government, for a full year. what we should not do is wake up one morning with a 1600 page bill that has these special interest riders attached that have nothing do with funding the u.s. government. as you reported they provide a big break to the big banks and put taxpayers back on the hook for bad decisions and gambling of the big banks and at the same time open the doors wider to special interest contributions to congressional political parties. so it's here is your tax break and, by the way, if you want to say thank you, just make more contributions to congressional campaign committees. it is not the way to do business. it's an embarrassment to the congress and the public. and we should not be doing business this way. >> as pointed out in your perspective, it's the worst. according to senator harry reid,
8:17 am
this is called surpri eed compr. let me play what he said. >> it achieves many of our important priorities. it gives the affordable care act the secured financial footing that it deserves. it gives our military the tool it is needs to combat isis, addresses a law which is helping police prevent sexual assault. increasing funding for student loan loans it's a comprise. it's what legislation is all about. >> the vice president and president made calls urging passage. what do you see they are not? >> well, harry reid was talking about some of the spending provisions in the bills. and those do have very good objectives and good things, but the other provisions that were tacked on in the dead of night are totally unrelated.
8:18 am
so what are they saying? they're saying that they would shut down the entire united states government and get rid of the good things unless they got this special break for banks putting taxpayers at risk again and again. by the way, send those additional contributions to our campaign committees because we just lifted the cap and so now the banks that got the big breaks you can say thank you in a special way. that's not a surprise. that's an outrage and the reality is that congress should not have gone down this road and i really hope that there will be an effort on behalf of the public to demand greater transparency and accountability in the process. >> congressman chris van hollen thank you for your time. it was an interesting night last night. up next hear from bill cosby's most high profile super
