new york ploifr police officers. wenjian liu and rafael ramos gunned down saturday as they sat in their patrol car in brooklyn. in an apparent revenge attack by 28-year-old ismaaiyl brinsley who came from baltimore to the city. there's been an outpouring of grief including at a growing memorial at the station house where both work. there's been heat the rhetoric exchange between police unions and politicians. as the new york times notes a widening rift between new york city mayor bill de blasio and the police department has been ripped open. one police union said the mayor has bloods on the hands after the way he portrayed police. police officers also turn their backs on mayor de blasio as he and the police commissioner walked through a hospital saturday to address the officer's deaths. an action bratton criticized this morning on the "today"

mayor gets, mayor de blasio will speak to the police officers and the reception he gets will be very indicative of relations going forward between the mayor's officer and those officers. which is an important week. back here at the scene of the shooting the memorial is growing. flowers, candles, cards being dropped off by officers from all over this city. paying their respects, grieving together, we're seeing a the lot of emotion and a lot of tears. tamron? >> we're also hearing -- as i noted, adam, as you know nbc news indicates that there have been officials from the administration as well as from the governor's officer and the mayor's officer to police union advising them to the to do television interview. what has been the union's response to that? >> we haven't heard from the union yet. we know ahead of the union head

8:08 am
the mayor represents. that's public safety and city at odds i think is inappropriate to do so. i think we expect more from our unions that had police organizations. and say that the mayor has blood on his hands is inaccurate. the blood is on the hands of the sick person that carried out the sick act. it's on the hands of those who continue the operation of guns in our communities. this is a conversation that has been part of this agenda for years. and the peaceful protests we're talking about real reform. they're not talking about police harm or retribution. they've done it in a peaceful manner here in new york and the american experience. >> let me get you to hang on. i want to bring in new york city councilmen germane williams who represents part of brooklyn. thank you so much for joining us. let me get your reaction to the

8:11 am
doesn't believe the mayor should apologize for the speech he gave where he everyoreferenced his s talking about safety around some police officers. when you look at the landscape here and you say it's politicized at this point. why has that been the response? i think a lot of people outside new york don't understand how the community did not rally together from all sides and how within a few hours it turned to someone saying the mayor has blood on his hands. >> you have a set of people actually don't want that. they've been pushing against certain things before this execution. before the mayor was elected. people can't forget about the conversation we've tried to have before. >> regarding stop and frisk. >> what they're doing is translating the -- into being anti-police. unfortunately, they have been successful in some ways. that's not accurate. so i keep saying what is it you want them to apologize for?
