nothing looks unusual, including this man sammy wallace who's seen walking across the parking lot an in to the store. >> in the surveillance tape you see sammy walk aimlessly throughout the store going through different aisles, walking around. acting like he is on his cell phone. >> cameras are positioned in the back of the store, and the security camera shows alicia grocery shopping with her daughters, 12-year-old ashley and sitting in the cart 2-year-old zoe. >> mom is going to the milk, produce aisle, taking things and putting them in the shopping cart and doesn't notice sammy wallace walking through the store. zoe makes eye contact with him and you can see sammy looks at her. >> wallace walks by but a few moments circles back. he walks up to the cart and snatches zoe out of her seat. when keating turns around she can't comprehend what's happening. >> here's this huge, huge man standing there with my daughter in his arms.

my first reaction is this can't be real? does he really have my baby, who is this. he said, hey little mama, you see this knife. >> the knife has a five-inch serrated blade and wallace is tresing it against zoe's side. he hands keating his cell phone and makes a bizarre demand that she call a man named kevin in dallas. >> she is trying to do what he requests but she is nervous and can't get the number pulled up and call it. >> i was going to do everything in my power to make sure the baby didn't leave the store with him. i panicked and started to scream at the top of my lungs. please help me. this man has my baby. please help me. as soon as i had everybody's attention, the store got eerily quiet and everyone crowded around. >> with zoe under his arm, wallace starts to walk away. >> i followed him along.

all i knew is i didn't want to leave my baby's side. >> the 12-year-old sister is in shock because she sees what is happening and we have a patron who's a preacher, a local preacher here in oklahoma. he blocks wallace's path with the shopping cart and he says my name is sammy. you can look at my license and see. and then we got 911 calls. >> there is someone with a knife holding a girl hostage. he is in the meat department. i'm trying no to let him see me on the phone. >> moments after the calls come in, police rush to take positions around the store and evacuate the area. >> the s.w.a.t. team has arrived. we are trying to take tactical positions. so if we have to take a shot, we can do so. captain huff and sergeant miller who are our crisis negotiators arrive at the scene and start rapport with sammy wallace. we find out who he is, sammy wallace. we start doing a criminal background check and see if

anyone is familiar with him. he has a pair of sunglasses on. he throws them on the ground. >> while negotiators engage wallace, zoe's mother is frantically pleaded for his daughter. >> he wouldn't listen. he wouldn't put the knife down. i went into extreme panic mode. i said i have to be praying. i put my hands down and said in jesus name save my baby. please save my baby. >> she is agitating the situation because she's a loving mother. we had to forcibly remove her situation and had to force her from the scene for her protection and the protection of zoe. we wanted to negotiate it in to a peaceful end. her daughter is taken out of the store. wallace is increasingly erratic and exhibits signs of mental illness. >> he is talking about illuminoty which is a group that talks about conspiracy theories. he feels like the government is watching him and indicates that president bush has been watching him. and he continues to ask us to

call kevin, this dallas police officer. so we actually get ahold of kevin and kevin doesn't know mr. wallace only knows he has his numbers and calls him so many times it is almost to an harassing point. >> they offer him a chair to sit down. >> it was tactical advantage for us because we knew we had his movement restricted. if we have to shoot mr. wallace the child won't fall from six foot level of height but smaller level. >> zoe is remarkably calm but wallace is deteriorating by the minute. >> he's sweating profusely, agitated and irritated. david, who's trained in crisis intervention knows that mr. wallace is having a manic episode. he's trying to calm him down. >> after 30 minutes of negotiations, wallace still isn't cooperating. instead he begins to count down. >> get kevin here within 60 minutes or i'm going to hufrt this child. then it accelerated to 30

minutes and then 60 seconds. he started in ten thes. he went 60, 40, 30, 20, and captain huff knew this is critical and at the same time he takes the knife from the rib cage and puts it to her chin and neck and the child starts to squirm. that's when captain huff felt the child was being injured. ace's countdown doesn't stop and captain huff is forced to make a decision. >> in this case when he has the child so close to him and close to his head he knew he had one option, to shoot him in the head. he knew it had to be point blank range. he tried to squat down to divert his attention. he looks to the left, which was a good tactical approach on our part. >> captain huff walks toward wallace, points his weapon at wallace's head and pulls the trigger. >> i heard the shot go off and i

thought, oh, my god, they just killed her. i thought she's dead. i just started screaming and jumping around. >> the shot kills sammy wallace and saves the life of 2-year-old zoe. >> captain huff takes zoe out of sammy's arms. immediately hands her off to sergeant miller who rushes her up to alicia, who's at the front of the store. >> when i saw zoe i nearly flew through that door. she had blood all over her. he kept saying it's not her blood. it's not her blood. she's okay. i reached out and grabbed her and pulled her in to me. it was the best moment. it was the best moment of my life. >> come here. can i have a kiss? >> the s.w.a.t. team approaches wallace, remove the knife, and wallace falls to the floor. that's how we disarmed him. he literally still had the knife clinched in his hand even after shot in the head.

i definitely down to risk my life for it still. it's definitely the passion of my life. it's different from sky diving. base jumping is more basic. there's no parachute. no time for one. we pack it like it is the only chance, since it is. >> the bridge sits 500 feet above the snake river in twin falls and it's a hot spot for base jumpers that can legally jump from the bridge any day of the week without a permit. >> i jump off this bridge, i'd say probably four days a week, about five times a day, on average, about 20 jumps a week. >> three, two, one, see ya! i feel very confident in what i'm doing. i don't feel like i'm taking a huge risk every time. fun stuff. >> living just a few minutes away from the action of the bridge is 102-year-old twin falls resident dorothy custer. ♪

>> there was a guy from new york who said playing harmonica is the best thing in the world for your lungs. so i kept it up. >> player harmonica hasn't been the only key to her longevity. dorothy thinks it is all in her head. think positive and help others. that's why we are here on this earth. >> for her 102nd birthday, her grandson proposed an idea. knowing her love of adventure, he thought she should celebrate a big birthday in a bold way. >> greg, her grandson call canned me one day. i told them i would take people on tandem base jumps and he asked if i could take dorothy. i said i need to meet her and

see if she is in good physical condition enough to do it. a couple of days later i went and visited her. she's so sharp. she was actually in really good shape for 102 years old. that's when i decided to go for it. >> i said, would you jump and i said, i don't see why not. as i said there's only two things that happen. i could either make it or i wouldn't and either way it didn't make any difference. >> reporter: june 2nd, 2013, sean and dorothy get suited up for their tandem jump from the middle of the bridge. >> i put her in full body armor, pad s made for motorcross just in case we jumped in to anything. i didn't want her to get hurt. >> cameras are positioned to capture every angle on sean's helmet, dorothy's hand and another base jumper who will jump alongside them. >> we had to have her climb over the rail which was going to be challenging. so we brought a ladder out. >> i climbed over the ladder and got over the railing on to this stand.

>> then i just grabbed her because she only weighs 90 pounds and put her down on the platform. >> he was right there hanging on to me. there was nothing to be afraid of at all. i had all the confidence in the world in sean. >> sean and dorothy are standing on a platform that is affixed to the end of the sglij we had to turn to where her feet were over the edge. that's the hardest part when they jump because it is not a natural thing. it is the things that bad dreams are made of. >> i wasn't nervous. it didn't bother me a bit. heights just don't bother me. i climbed too many trees and too many high haystacks. >> her camera's good? >> yep. >> now there's nothing left to do but jump. >> i was so nervous about jumping with her. i never had taken anyone that old. i asked if she was ready and she

just, with this hardened voice she said. >> ready. >> there was no hesitation. she wasn't backing down. we gave it a big countdown and windt for it. -- went for it. three, two, one. it was just silence. she wasn't pushing against me or anything. when the parachute opened she started laughing. and it was hilarious. i just felt real calm hearing her laugh because i knew she was fine. when she was silent i wondered if everything was okay just from the opening of the parachute. the landing was definitely going to be the scariest part of the whole thing. that's how most jumpers get hurt. i knew with her i had to have the softest landing i have ever. and i flared the canopy and grabbed her pants and pulled her legs up so her feet barely touched the ground. >> that was so quick. >> all right. >> i can't believe you.

let's put everyone now. >> all 30 skiers get in to formation at the top of the jump, and off they go. they make the flip. woo! >> once airborne, some of the skiers lose their grips and their hand-to-hand chain is broken. the group sets up to give it one more try. >> everybody was excited and we said three, two, loud, go. and then the people that were higher because it was flatter had to go first. and everybody jump pretty much at the same time. >> this time, a record-breaking success. >> the landing was perfect. the photographer catches the jump frame by frame.

>> ma'am? are you okay? >> when i called out to her, she kind of looked back at me and then looked back down at the ground at the under passing traffic again. you could tell she was sad. ma'am, are you okay? i wanted to stop her from looking at the under passing traffic and get her mind off of that. >> barton makes a call to dispatch asking they send help and fast. what happens next is remarkable. ma'am, are you okay? ma'am? >> so i walked really slowly towards her. i had my hand out and not doing anything to try to startle her. and at that point she turned around and started to look back at the traffic again. so that's when i kind of lunged and grabbed her and wrapped my arms around her. >> instead of pulling the woman across the guardrail, barton

poses a question to her. i said, do you want to come on the right side of the guardrail? that's the first time she spoke when she said yes. i ask canned her a question to kind of a, put her at ease. because this is a stranger grabbing me. and also, to give her the feeling of power, if you will, saying, okay. i still have a choice. i have to make a decision. i have to think about what do i really want? do i want to jump? do i want to come on the right side of the guardrail? >> with his arm around the woman, barton waits until an ambulance arrives. when he gets back on the bus, it's to a rousing round of applause. [ applause ] barton finishes his bus route for the day and heads home. things are back to normal. that is until barton's employer

hours. it may sound like a robbery in the making. but is it? august 25th, 2013. on a sunday night in wayne, new jersey, employees at a local store called buddy's small lots gets disturbing news. >> i got the phone call from nelson, our vice president. he said there was a break in in wayne and i'm on the way there now. i don't know what happened and i don't know how bad it is. >> i got here to the store and realized we had a problem with the lock. there seemed to be an electrical malfunction. they didn't lock properly. i went down to the office and started looking at the surveillance stains. >> he saw four boys coming down and said this is it. we have been robbed. two of the boys had things in their hands. he said definitely things are missing. >> who are the four young men seemingly caught in the act? take a closer look. they are not burglars.

>> we stayed close. i'm not going to say we were scared. we stayed close and saw the lights and stuff on. they opened. >> we drove that far. we wanted to get it. we spent them trying to search. >> we walked around and stood there for about five minutes waiting until we looked at the time. we had to get back to meetings. we were sitting there and said should we leave the money or put the stuff back? >> just then he spots the security camera. >> we had no choice but to leave the money. if we leave, they probably took something. >> he leaves the $4 for his auxiliary cable on the counter while making sure it's in plain sight for the camera's lens. james follows, paying the dollar it costs for the batteries. as if this all wasn't honest enough, they take it a step further. >> i told tommy, just leave

extra change for us because i know in new jersey the tax is 7% of a dollar. if you are only buying something a dollar, the tax is going to be about 7 cents. i said try to leave enough for the both of us. i had no change and he had change. >> all of a sudden you see them go to the register and putting money down. whoa, really? what's happening? he's counting out and realized there was a camera and he is going tax. he is putting his tax on the counter as well. who does that? >> for the buddy's employees, reviewing the footage, it becomes clear. >> we leave emergency lights on a lot. apparently when the looks malfunctioned, it appeared as if we could be open so the boys pushed the door and it opened. why wouldn't you come in? >> these young machine are not hell raisers, but trailblazers in the doing the right thing department. the employees decide to reach out to local news to help track
