good morning. i'm bill karins in for thomas roberts. it's monday december 29th. welcome to way too early. let's get right to the latest on the search for air asia flight 8501. they continue to search what happened to the plane and where it might be. it is in the java sea where the plane disappeared. it includes a lot of planes and helicopters. loved ones are awaiting any word on the flight which had 162 people on board including 155 from indonesia but officials are not sounding optimistic about the outcome. the head of indonesia's search and rescue agency says it's likely the plane is at the bottom of the sea. at 5:39 a.m. sunday morning the airbus plane took off from sur
2:31 am
surabaya for a two hour flight. the pilot asked to call and change flight path and 6:17 42 minutes into the flight all contact was lost. no distress call was received. there was severe weather at the time in the area and thunderstorms and lightning. those conditions mean the knight likely encountered turbulence but not even within the thunderstorms but several miles beyond the storm. the pilot of the plane had more than 20,000 hours of flying experience and the plane made more than 13,000 trips. flight 8501 is the latest in a series of tragedies this year. if the plane did crash it would be the third disaster in 2014 for the malaysia aviation industry. it has been nine months since flight 370 vanished on its way to beijing. they never found any wreckage of
2:32 am
the plane with 279 people on board. four months later flight 17 was shot down over a rebel controlled region of eastern ukraine. they both blame prorussian separatists. all 289 people on board that flight died and malaysia airlines was already losing millions of dollars but the tragedies led to wider losses and mayorjor overhaul for the company. and air algerie flight crashed in northern mali. they're still investigating the cause. now let's bring in our foreign affairs correspondent and you logged thousands of miles yourself. what about this story over the weekend is making you shake your head the most about this tragedy. >> first of all good morning bill. i want to pick up on a couple of key aspects that you just mentioned this morning. there was no radio call and there was no emergency transponder signal.
2:33 am
that's key. it tells us that the crew weren't aware of the conditions that they were getting themselves into or there was something catastrophic which prevented them from putting out the radio call. >> i heard it is common that pilots when they're trying to save their planes their first thought is not let's call the control tower. it's let's try to save the plane first. it may not be that shocking they didn't call. >> what you're talking about is the mantra that all pilots are taught when they go through flying train chg is aviation, navigate communicate. whenever you have an emergency the first thing we're thought to do -- and we have over 3,000 hours around the world is to fly the airplane. you then navigate it to the nearest diversion you can be aware of to get the aircraft on the ground. once you're going in the right direction you put out a radio call. usually it's a mayday.
2:34 am
if you get time after that you can put 7700 on the transponder which will alert anyone seeing your transponder code on the radar it will alert and flash and let the world know that you have a problem but what's different for me is these guys are operating in a big crew so a lot of these things can happen simultaneously. the copilot will have the map and be inpointing the diversion and then the engineer or someone else can maybe put out a radio call at the same time. so these things happen very expeditiously and quickly. i want to take you to the air france 449 disaster. that's the french jet that crashed in brazil. there was no call on that and it was only two years later once the black boxes and flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorders and that was two years after. >> that was see veerverely deep water.
2:35 am
>> but the air force 449 flight was important because the pilots got themselves in a situation where there was a catastrophic stall but didn't realize they were in a stall. the aircraft was descending at 14,000 feet per minute and they didn't realize they were in it and a call didn't go out but this information wasn't gleaned until over two years later they have been poured over by the analysts. >> are you optimistic that we'll know something sooner than later because of the shallow body of water? we had the flight on radar and we knew where it was when the signal was lost. >> people are starting and people will naturally start to draw conclusions and alignments to mh-370 but there are very key differences as well. one is the actual depth of the ocean. if you look at air france 449, very very -- >> trenches. >> very deep ocean which makes
2:36 am
looking for it using these sub surface or underwater vehicles, makes it incredibly difficult but if you look at malaysia 370 and remember where the satellite analysis took us down about 1300 miles off the coast. we're looking at depths of 15,018,000 feet which are incredibly hard to search. the java sea on average is 150 meters and we have a fairly good idea of what the coordinates were for the last known position of this flight. which makes it a little bit easier because what the investigators and search and rescue guys are going to have to do is come up with baseline assumptions. they're going to have to look at an assumption on speed and altitude. they'll put them in various trenches they'll come up with an enturns and that will allow them to look at a fuel burn and eventually get a range.
2:37 am
they'll be able to draw this out and come up with a search area. >> appreciate it. thank you so much for your expertise. >> cheers. >> we'll keep you updated on all the new developments on this story as they come in throughout the morning. turning to other news this morning the city of new york and particularly it's police force remain de remain divided over mayor de de blasio's approach. some turned their back on him during the eulogy. he said our sole focus is unifying the city and honoring the lives of our police officers. while de blasio may have given the idea he was on the side of the points higher tess tos he should still give support. >> the mayor of the city of new york shouldn't be blamed for the
