that's all we know this hour about the likely location of missing airasia qz8501 carrying 162 people. the plane disappeared sunday morning 42 minutes after taking off from indonesia to singapore. oily spots were ruled out as unrelated. when the sun rises in a few hours, a third day of searching will continue with about 30 ships and 15 aircraft from four different countries. the search area will expand for today's search containing at least four new sectors including ground area. this afternoon the state department eds indonesia made a formal request for u.s. to aid. they are still determining how the u.s. will assist. what caused the plane's disappearance is still an open question. yesterday dozens of passengers

on board family began to wait where the flight began awaiting news. joining me now senior british officer who has logged more than 3,000 hours of flying and retired news correspondent, both of you, thank you for being here. bob, i'm going to ask you first, indonesia officials stay is likely the jet is at the bottom of the sea. what may have caused the plane to go down? what's the most likely possibility? injure . >> well i think it is too early to speculate. you got to think about weather. that's the only thing we know right now that was not part of a normal day for this flight. but again so many times there's something that stands out early on without any evidence and later on turns out it wasn't involved at all. it does puzzle me. i mean, these planes are built

to get through weather like that. i think what we're waiting for here is really solid evidence. that means hopefully finding the wreckage and locating the recorders. >> you know there was no distress signal sent though the pilot did request a change in course due to possible thunderstorms. what do these facts indicate about what may have happened to the plane. >> i think bob's right not to speculate. what we do know is there was no distress put out. no emergency code put on the responder. a crew will put on the code 7707 on trans ponders and that will come up on the radar screens, all of the authorities it will alert the world that there is a problem. there was none of that. that concludes that either the crew warrant wear of a situation that was developing and that is what happened with air france

449 that crashed off brazil. or something catastrophic happened and there was no time to put out a call. that's what we know at the moment. >> this is day three of the search. and it will continue in a few hours, it will be daylight in. families are hoping the plane may have crashed on a remote island. is that a possibility and would pings have been sent out if that were the case. >> not necessarily pings if it was on land but i think if it had been on land someone would have spotted it. so i think it is right that at bottom unfortunately says there's month chance a plane could float for this long. that's sad news and very difficult for relatives. i think we have to assume that that went to the bottom.
1:05 pm
>> you wanted to jump in. >> i want to pick up on what bob said. there's a procedure here that the search and rescue operation will be following. normal procedure, the crews will be looking for the wreckage trying to identify objects, like debris in the ocean, which will link that to the final resting place of 8501. that wreckage then will alert the rescue recovery people go in and look for the flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorders. only then we have those, after the massive amount of assistance, only then can we start piecing together the puzzle of what actually happened and brought 8501 to its resting place. >> bob, there's a lot of comparisons between this flight
1:06 pm
and the malaysia flight which disappeared in almost the same area how is this different? >> you have a lot better chance of finding the wreckage i think. it won't pe easy. it is going to tark time. it is going to take time. you have to trace it back and find those recorders. if you find the wreckage on the surface you have to hope to find the recorders down underneath where the main body of the wreckage was. the biggest difference is in this case you have a shot at findings these recorders where as with the other one they don't seem to be having any luck at all. >> indonesia officials say the jet is probably, quote, on the bottom of the sea. when will the search shift to

lowering crime. the sad thing is before the announcement of the garner case it was said that crime was low. the basic founding principal to that was that black lives matter. you have to treat crime as seriously in poor neighborhoods as you do in better off neighborhoods and that principal got lost along the way and hard feelings developed. >> that's a good historical perspective. even i forgot about it. and we were both at the daily news at the time. >> they used to have misdemeanor homicides, there were so many murders in brooklyn. now the barclays center is there. you went from blood on the sidewalk to miley cyrus walking

you will not want a progressive running the city. i don't hi it matter wlz he apologizes or not. there's probably real things he can do to patch things up with the cops it begins to trying to understand them and how they felt canwhen they with in the street with something to say. he was talking about those protests talking about killer cops and it wasn't exaggerated. and the cops felt it. if he doesn't begin to understand how they felt, you know. >> so what you're getting at let me ask what do you see as the fundamental issue that is stopping the two sides from seeing eye to eye? >> well i think it is important that prior to the unfortunate incidents both with eric garner and the death of the two

officers, which are all incredible tragedies, there was a discussion and an effort in new york to change the way pleasing took place. it was the effort to end stop and frisk. which was a civil rights lawsuit. which ended up in a decision by federal judge to end stop and frisk. bill de blasio ran with the commitment that he would end stop and frisk. he ran. he achieved. almost 70% of the vote. and proceeded to settle that lawsuit. it is important to note and i think the other gentleman who is being interviewed by you made this point, that even after the end of stop and frisk crime continued to go down which defeats the argument of the prop oents that stop and frisk was essential to crime reduction in new york city.

now the mayor's job, is not to win a popularity contest amongst plaurs. police officers. the mayor's job is to serve the public interest. sometimes serving the public interest means changing the government that you adminster and a component of that government is the police department. i think that as much as people want to point fingers at mayor de blasio i found the comments of the patrolmen president to be across the line. and i find it very dpis tasteful and snot helpful for police officers who are part of if you will a para-military organization to turn their back on the mayor who is their commanding officer. i don't think we can countenance at this. speaking out is fair game. turning your back is not fair game. and i do think that mayor
1:25 pm
guiliani's comments distract fra the real issue. the real issue is how can you continue to make new york a safe city while at the same time having a department which is respectful and effective and enjoys good relationships with all of the communities. that ought to be the objective. >> let me get michael to react. >> in new york almost no one considers the mayor the commanding officer of the police. >> but he is. look at the charter of the city of new york. it's okay to argue sem antics. >> he appoints the police commissioner but the police commissioner runs the police department. >> no question. and the mayor sets the budget airy policy and the mayor is going to have -- you can't divorce the role of the mayor because the commissioner serves at will. >> let michael finish his point.

1:28 pm
if on the other hand you've had a negative experience with the police or you have family members who have had negative experiences with the police your position may be indeed, different. i think even in new york in those parts of the city where you have had high levels historically of stop and frisk, the police department is not as popular as they are in the areas where the levels of stop and frisk may be much lower. so we are all what our experiences are. it's interesting to have a discussion about racism. but the driving while black phenomenon and the disparity reported by numbers and information. i think one of the ways to discuss these issues particularly when it cops to criminal in justicejustice with the police is to get the facts on the table. which is why an anti-racial profiling law requires reporting of information by states and
