this morning new york dalety news cover, dead at 82 as his son is sworn in for his second term. just hours before his father passed away new york governor andrew cuomo told the audience at his second swearing in ceremony that his dad wasn't well enough to attend but was there in spirit. >> we stayed at my father's house to ring in the new year with him. i went through the speech with him. he said it was good especially for a second termer. see. he couldn't be here physically today, my father. but my father is in this room. he's in the heart and mind of every person who is here. he's here and he's here. >> president obama called cuomo, quote, a determined champion of progressive values and an unswitching voice for tolerance. the white house says the

president also called governor cuomo to extend his condolences. bill and hill ri clinton also issued a statement. and new jersey governor chris christie accepted his condolences saying our country lost a giant. he was a strong leader who loved new york and its people. he was catapulted to the national stage during his famous 1984 speech criticizing then president ronald ray gone. david ushery has more on the political legacy he left behind. >> mario cuomo was born in queens, the son of italian immigrants who came to ellis island with a dream of starting a new life for them. his parents ran a grocery store. he earned bachelor and law degrees before learning his career as a legal assistant. in 1977 he ran for mayor of new

york city but lost to ed koch in the primary. cuomo was elected lieutenant governor in 1978. he once again faced ed koch in a primary but this time walked away victorious ant when on to defeat lewis layerman in the general election >> we won because people and the passion of belief are still more important than money. >> cuomo was catapulted into the national spotlight two years into his term delivering a keynote speech in 1984 to the democrat convention. >> there is despair, mr. president, in the faces that you don't see, in the places that you don't visit in your shining city. >> the address launched him on to the short list of front runners for the democrat nomination in '88 and '92.

they blue a 2-0 lead before the blackhawks scored on a power play with 12 second to go to get the 3-2 win over chicago. now in west virginia, a traffic stop ends with the discovery of two bodies. the trouble started after two officers pulled over an suv with stolen plates. and that's when a red pickup pulled over. opening fire and shot two cops. one officer fired back hitting the suv driver in the leg. both vehicles pulled off. the pickup went over the hill and that's when two bodies were found. the two suspects are father and son and the victims were from north carolina. now to another police shooting. he says it was an accident. but she's in critical condition. the big question this morning, how and why did a georgia police chief shoot his wife with his service weapon. that's what the investigators

or toir skills. this is a guy who gave huge huge speeches back several decades ago that really motivated the left. he was someone who toyed with the idea of running for president, as well as was rumored to be considered for the supreme court. but his legacy and shadow does loom wide other the democratic party as we're seeing with all of the condolences that have been issued on both sides of the law. a new year a new gop led congress. which senator wills we will watching in 2015? >> there's a ton of senators we're going to be watching with marco rubio, rand paul ted krez but also people lick senator joni earnest, he's got a high profile trip planned to israel really trying to elevate her status within the party.

as well as some veterans chuck grassley. and of course senator elizabeth warren. the rising progressive rock star could potentially challenge hillary clinton in the democratic primary and newly crowned in the democratic leadership circles as well. >> it will be interesting if he does run. how would that upset the balance in the senate? >> if she were to run for president, it would create a larger debate within the party. you know this is interesting because a lot of progressives that i talked to say that they want elizabeth warren to lead the progressive movement of the warren wing of the party. they have concerns with some of the democrat party and their tie to wall street. they need everybody working now to get the economy moving. it's an interesting tension to watch within the democratic party to say the least. >> always a pleasure. >> thank you.
