ch is resilient and french people at this moment just want to show to the world how they're united in the fight against terrorism. >> bill neely in paris and laura thank you for joining me tonight. up next, first look. breaking news this morning on "first look." the french intelligence fears that the two could carry out another attack and across america today, dangerously low temperatures and bone-chilling winds blanket the nation. including fatal pileups on the roads and emergency warnings mounting. good morning, everybody. thanks for joining us today. we have some breaking news to tell you about. paris still on alert. the urgent hunt for two suspected terrorists on the loose. the fear they could strike again at any time. the two suspects, two brothers the kouachis, and an 18-year-old has already surrendered.
2:01 am
they're linked to the flood bath at "charlie hebdo." ron, how did the police zero in on these suspects? >> reporter: unclear at this point. we don't know how they zeroed in on these two. the third suspect turned himself in to the police station some distance from paris. these pictures of the two other suspects have been circulated around for some time. there's a massive manhunt underway in many parts of the city. there have been hundreds of additional police that have been called in and military as well. the prime minister, the prime minister of france, has been trying to figure out what to do and keep on top of this situation. the bottom line is that it's unclear whether the two will strike again or where. so the city is very much on high alert. we're in the center of town and behind me in the distance there you can see at this main square, people are laying flowers and candles at a site to show respect for the journalists and
2:02 am
the two police officers who were killed last night. that's happening in a lot of places around town as people come today to try and gather -- get on with their lives and try to figure out what's going on and where things are -- where things -- where they'll be safe and where they will not be safe. a lot of uncertainty i think is the word for the day and a heavy, heavy police presence. the prime minister said literally that hundreds of people are being followed and dozens of people have been arrested rounded up as police question suspects in the case to try to get to the bottom of this. at least two suspects believed to be french nationals which adds anning interesting layer to this situation because they're citizens of this country. a huge manhunt going on here in paris. back to you. >> a huge manhunt on what will be a national day of mourning. tell us what you're expecting to see during that. >> reporter: well at noon here people will pause, a moment of
2:03 am
silence to pay their respects. flags all over town, all over the country flying at half-mast. we expect to hear from the president of the country, or the prime minister today at some point because they want to keep the public briefed on what's on happening. there have been calls, condolence, calls of support from around the world. so it's a day when again the bottom line is so much uncertainty because it's unclear whether the two suspects are. unclear whether they'll try to strike again. >> ron allen, thank you so much for that. reaction from across the globe has been just overwhelming. pope francis met with several french muslim leaders yesterday shortly after the leader and the pope called the attack abominable and urged everyone to stop the spread of hate. meanwhile, in the united states americans from coast to coast are paying their respects to those who lost their lives in the attack. nbc's tracie potts is live from
2:04 am
washington for us. what's the reaction been like here in the u.s.? >> reporter: somber and determined and we saw two large vigils yesterday and last night. one here at in washington, d.c. in the newseum, where people who talked about the 12 who were killed, but also very determined that this is not going to prevent freedom of expression and freedom of speech in paris around around the world. we saw another event like that another vigil, happening at union square in new york. many people there that we heard from were french or had family in france and were very concerned with the terror alert there being raised there. president obama has promised support to the french and part of that support will be intelligence. the state department says they are helping the french track down where these two brothers, these two remaining suspects might be.
2:05 am
betty? >> thank you for that. joining me now is msnbc law enforcement analyst jim kavanagh. he is a retired atf special agent and former hostage negotiator. thank you for joining us today. >> good morning, betty. >> as we look at this attack, it seems pretty well planned. how difficult will it be to find these suspects, especially with porous borders over there? >> you know, they could be traveling across the borders easily, laying low. you know? they've got their guns and they can commandeer a car or take over a house or they could have some conspirators helping hide them out. but they're likely to be -- on violence and shoot it out with the police. they already did it yesterday and they might go out in a blaze with the french police or the belgium police or german police. >> from the video we have seen of the attack what can you tell us about the suspects' training? you're talking about going out in a blaze of glory. but at the same time, though, we're seeing men who really
2:06 am
walked into this building knowing exactly what they were doing and it seems like they were targeting specific people. >> yeah. they're guys who have practiced with firearms. may have been in a conflict zone. and they had the rifles and the ammunition pouches and the gloves and the masks. but they're extremely well trained, tactical police officers or special operations military personnel. they're just -- they're just determined terrorists who the slaughter innocent people and so they come off big in that instance. even when they confront the paris police who come on their bicycles and they have a side arm. but it's a new day for these guys. because when they get confronted now, they'll get confronted by a police tactical units once they're discovered and uncovered. they're going to lose this gunfight. so they won the first one when they were slaughtering
2:07 am
innocents. they're not going to win the last one. >> got to find them. all right, jim kavanagh thank you. and to the other big story that we are following this morning, that dangerously cold weather. more than half of the u.s. population is under a windchill warning right now. chicago, boston and cleveland, they have all cancelled school today. and in pennsylvania whiteout conditions caused a deadly 18-car pileup on i-80. three people were killed. a bus had to transport some of the 30 people injured. similar conditions in michigan caused a family filled minivan to rear into a tractor-trailer and it did not stop. 16 miles and 25 minutes later, everyone was fine, aside for some -- from some minor injuries in fact. and in massachusetts, salvation for this golden retriever who fell through thin ice. firefighters grabbed an ice sled and saved his life and now he's safe and sound. that is one lucky pooch.
2:08 am
all right, the rest of us may not be so lucky with the weather out there now. >> no, this is the peak of the cold living up to what was promised. we are at negative numbers in boston. that's not even factoring in the windchill. that's the temperature, negative 1. 29 in new orleans, that's a cold air mass. we're all the way down to 5 as far south as nashville. as far as the warnings go it's everyone east of the mississippi. we are colored in the blue shade here either a warning or an advisory. 180 million people under a cold weather advisory. here's the new latest numbers, dropped to negative windchill at boston. that's why they did cancel schools there, same with providence. we have zero windchill in atlanta. that doesn't happen that often. we are down to 19 windchill in new orleans. you get the idea with the cold. now today's very cold we start to warm it up from here. but we have another shot of snow coming. this one's go is going to be further north than the last one. but the snow in minneapolis and

duluth, and green bay to chicago. six inches possible in cleveland to grand rapids. tomorrow albany, burlington, new york city only looks like a little coating. but that's the pattern now. cold, snow cold snow. >> the new year is starting off very cold. all right. thank you. the show does go on for bill cosby. while three new accusers come forward with sex abuse claims. flanked by gloria allred they described their encounters and they accused him of drugging and abusing them. cosby began his three toe day tour in canada and he thanked his fans and added, quote, i would like to applaud all of you and give you a standing ovation for respecting yourselves the theater and the event organizers that produced a spectacular show. there were a handful of people demonstrating cosby's

appearance. in recent months more than 20 women have come forward with claims that cosby drugged or sexually assaulted them decades ago. the representatives have dismissed all of the allegations. his attorneys have not addressed the claims of the three new accusers. meanwhile, though phylicia rashad who played cosby's wife on "the cosby show" is facing backlash after coming to his defense just a day ago. filmmaker judd apatow tweeted, how many women need to be raped before you realize he destroyed his own legacy? 30, 40? for me it's one. he is referring to what rashad said and she said her comment was taken out of context. >> why i said, this is not about the women. this is about something else. this is about the oblit race of legacy. i'm a woman. i would never say such a thing.
2:11 am
>> the reporter who got the initial interview clarified rashad's comments saying there was never the meaning and forget those women to say actually forget or dismiss them. let's get down to business. lana doughty. >> the markets could see more green arrows after stocks rallied on wednesday. the s&p 500 index snapping a five-day losing streak and worries about europe's economy are easing and they reacted to minutes from last month's federal reserve meeting, the feds signaling it could raise interest rates this year. even if inflation doesn't pick up. president obama will outline proposals to boost the housing market they include lowering interest rates to first-time home buyers minorities and struggling americans. it is a modest move though. producing a savings of about $900 a year per person. gm is cutting prices on most versions of the cadillac cts

though. all that deliciousness is just for 20 bucks. >> how much is it when it comes to heart burn though? >> too much to count probably. check out this woman on antique road show. she inherited a collection of baseball cards and letters featuring the boston red stockings. check out her reaction when she finds out what it is all worth. >> i'm going to value this as an archive, everything here. if you're going to insure it, i would insure it for at least $1 million. >> are you serious? >> it is the greatest archive i have ever had at the road show. >> really? holy smokes. >> yeah. holy smokes is absolutely right. the owner inherited the cards from her great-grandparents. they ran a boarding house in the 1800s where a lot of the players stayed. so she plans to keep them all in the family. and the classic reaction, classic cards. >> she was like what?

>> it's been a difficult morning as we follow the attack in france on the journalist there. as a veteran journalist, i want to get your personal reaction to this. >> well, if you allow me a bit of an indulgence to join journalists around the world and say je suis charlie that is to say i am charlie, the homage to the satirical magazine in france which was attacked in the -- and the 12 people -- i guess it's 13 now were killed by the muslim extremists who were offended by the caricatures that offended their sensibilities and of course the stand is we have to stand for free expression as a society, as a world society. that is something that is just very precious if you're going to have freedom. and you can't have people in the name of religion or anything else attack that right. even if you're offended and quite frankly i was a bit offended by some of the cartoons that they printed. that's not the point. having said that, we also have to make sure that we don't turn

against -- unfairly turn against muslims -- peaceful muslims throughout the world who are as horrified as we are about what happened in paris. the pope is meeting with muslim leaders to show a spirit of unity which is the kind of thing we need to have around the world at the same time by continuing our free expression. >> well, president obama is also offering assistance to france in the wake of the terrorist attack. but back here at home, he is pushing housing. he's touting his economic accomplishment. and this all leading up to his state of the union address. will this help his approval ratings and his agenda in the process? >> well, you know, it's going to be very interesting. he has decided for the last two years of his presidency, he's not going to be so acquiescent with republicans as many critics say he was for the first six years of his presidency. everybody is calling it his last quarter, the fourth quarter in office. we're going to see. he is talking now today about
