france is in a national day of mourning. the manhunt is underway as we speak for a pair of french brothers considered armed and very dangerous. the front page of "usa today" may best sum up the response from not just france, but the world this morning. je suis charlie. translation -- i am charlie. right now, there are two men that police have -- are doing all they can to find. there are the images right there. cherif and said kouachi. police say cherif may have ties to al qaeda. he was convicted of helping to fund militant fighters in iraq and spent 18 months in prison. several others are in custody, including an 18-year-old who was surrendered after he was named as a possible suspect. now, this all happened as a staff meeting was underway and that's when the masked gunmen came in and the carnage began. the men arrived with assault rifles in hand, they called out specific names of staff members. first targeting the editor. one witness says that he thought the gunmen were part of an

anti-terrorism squad because they were so calculating in this attack. another witness says in part, quote, they knew exactly what they had to do and exactly where to shoot. now, this video shows two armed men casually exiting the building just before they shoot a wounded police officer at point blank range in the head. the officer laying on the ground saying, no, no. officials say the suspects then carjacked a vehicle after their initial get away car had crashed. eight journalists and two police officers are among those dead. 11 people are also wounded. four in serious condition. now, this french magazine frequently faced threats for its depictions of islam and was firebombed in 2011. the paper's last tweet before the attack was a political cartoon of the leader isis. and france's terror alert is at the highest level following the attack and there's extra security at transportation hubs and places of worship as well. francois hollande called those

kill and wounded in the terror attack heroes who were killed in quote, an act of exceptional bar barrism. he urged the country to stand together. president obama called his french counterpart to offer condolences and he condemned the true gruesome attacks on the journalists and also john kerry. >> the fact that this was an attack on journalists, an attack on our free press, also underscores the great -- the undermining of the freedom of speech and of the press. those who carry out senseless attacks against innocent civilians ultimately they'll be forgotten and will stand with the people of france in this very difficult time. >> they may wield weapons but we in france and in the united states share a commitment to those who wield something that is far more powerful.

not just a pen, but a pen that represents an instrument of freedom, not fear. free expression and a free press are core values. they are universal values. principles that can be attacked but never eradicated because brave and decent people around the world will never give in to the intimidation and the terror that those seeking to destroy those values employ. >> so we are also following breaking news in a suburb of paris that is adding to fears this morning after that "charlie hebdo" attack. nbc has confirmed that a police officer was shot and seriously wounded while investigating a traffic accident. a street sweeper was also shot. the shooter was wearing dark clothes and not wearing a mask. he ran away on foot and at this hour is still at large. however, officials say there's no known link to yesterday's terror attack and warned people against jumping to conclusions.

i want to bring in now nbc news foreign correspondent aman aldean. we see the condolences coming in and this attack on the freedom of the press. this manhunt continues. we have one person in custody who could be the linchpin to kind of reveal what was behind this all. but it seems as if this magazine new exactly what it was facing because they had been firebombed in the past. >> yes. >> so explain the calculations that go in to trying to figure out why specifically they were so targeted. >> yeah, well, this is a magazine that obviously has its fair share of controversy. i mean, back in 2011 it published a series of cartoons inviting the prophet muhammad to come and be a guest editor so called guest editor or contributor to the magazine and as a result of that they were firebombed. the editor had police protection with him wherever he went and in 2011 when all of the cartoons

and the anti-islam videos were triggering all of the protests around the world ux the french government actually asked the paper -- the magazine not to publish any further cartoons, rebuked them for doing so. that forced the french government around the world to shut down schools and businesses so gives you a sense of the controversy and the amount of pressure this magazine was under. but among jihadists, this specific newspaper, this individual the "charlie hebdo," was listed among the people that jihad itself jihadists wanted to kill around the world. he was very much in the crosshairs of extremist militants. >> such a direct attack on freedom of speech. we saw such a rally through the streets of paris. i don't know if we have the shots that show the images of everyone standing up not afraid. look at that. this mass of humanity showing up to show their support to say we're not afraid and the je suis charlie banners that we have

seen trending throughout social media. >> yeah. >> so such a wide response to this, but we don't know what the connective tissue is and where this comes from except for that one link that we know from one of the brothers, who was a suspect to al qaeda. other than that -- >> and the french government have not made clear why they're want and what is their connection to this particular case. they have been named as suspects. the 18-year-old after hearing his name in the news turned himself in. there are seven other arrests according to local media reports in connection with the case. not clear who they are. and you talked about the outpouring of support. it's important to keep in mind, this is because of the value of what is being attacked here. people don't necessarily agree or sympathize with what this magazine represented. i mean, it offended everybody. it offended jew, politicians, it offended christians orthodox jews and muslims, but it's not about who they offended but the way of life that came under

discriminating against certain websites. cnbc's jeff cutmore has more from london. jeff, start with the preview of tomorrow's job report because that's important. what are economyists -- economists saying? >> good morning to you. we had unambiguously good numbers out of the adp survey. a private hiring survey, and the figures were strong. 241,000 jobs added. you know what was really exciting in that number? the fact that the engine of the economy, smaller businesses put on most of those new hires. and i think that that's quite exciting, as far as the economists are concerned, going into the nonfarm payrolls number. so we are expected to see that reflected in tomorrow's jobs number. plus, we'll get some public sector hiring here and it will give us a good sense of just how strong this recovery is in the u.s. economy. just on a slightly bum note here, and it picks up on that

kentucky. so it's cold. now that the cold is with us now we'll go to the next thing. we have snow coming once again behind this. and another cold shot for the midwest. this isn't going to be a huge amount of snow. but cleveland up to six inches tonight into tomorrow. grand rapids up to 7 inches. and this morning in chicago, it's negative 8 degrees. here you get another fluffy snow on top of that. minneapolis around 3. a little coating of snow friday around new york city and around albany, new york and burlington. again, this is the temperature, this is not the windchill factored in. only 31 with sun in atlanta. that is a cold air mass. only 57 down there in orlando which is cold for them. notice that we get up to 16 that's it, in boston. right now it's negative 1 in boston. so it will be a little better the winds won't be as gusty in afternoon. but still cold. into friday the dangerous cold
