2:01 pm
for president. the post reports that romney is moving quickly to reassemble his national political network. romney will also be attending this week's rnc meeting in san diego. a source close to romney said he will deliver remarks on friday night. i bet they can't wait. i say mitt romney should absolutely go for it. it can't possibly go any worse than 2012. >> i'm in this race because i care about americans. i'm not concerned about the very poor. we have a safety net there. if it needs repair, i'll fix it. i'm concerned about the very heart of america. >> i like being able to fire people who provide services to me. if someone doesn't give me the good service i need i want to say i'm going to get somebody else to provide that service to me. >> i'm not sure about these cookies.

2:03 pm
forget about his car elevator. there's just so many stories out there. romney has been telling supporters he would run on an anti-poverty platform. if that's his plan mitt romney will have to answer for the 2012 game-changer. >> 47% of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. >> romney is also making the case he will be strong on foreign policy. if romney were president, there wouldn't be an isis at all and putin would know his place in life. many are already criticizing
2:04 pm
romney for even thinking about doing this again. if romney does run, it will no doubt make for really some pretty good mud slinging over in the gop primary. rand paul is already going for it. >> if he runs to the right of jeb bush, he'll still be to the left of the rest of the party. so it may be a difficult spot to occupy. look i liked governor romney. i like him personally. i think he's a good person. i think he was a great businessman. that's yesterday's news. he's tried twice. i don't think that there really is a third time out there. i think he did a lot of things right, but in the end you have to have a bigger constituency. it is just time probably that the party is going to be looking for some fresh and new. >> rand paul didn't stop there. when you do the same thing and expect a different result, it is sort of what einstein said what
2:05 pm
the definition of insanity is. the wall street journal slammed mitt. it read in part quoting the question for the former massachusetts governor will have to answer is why he would be a better candidate than he was in 2012. romney is a man of admirable personal character with his instinctive belief that 47% of america would never vote for him, he would be the ideal foil for such campaign. i disagree with all of that. mitt romney does believe he has a real shot this time around. the landscape is going to be a lot different in 2016. the competition i don't think is going to be as tough as barack obama. if hillary clinton is the nominee, i find it hard to believe she's going to be able to match the organization that
2:06 pm
obama had and the ground game. just look at what happened in iowa. got to be brilliant on the basics. the republican motivation against the clintons is well documented and still pretty strong to this day. now it's going to be tougher for the democrats to win ohio and florida in 2016 because of what? voter suppression. republican governors in both of those states that's not going to help the democrats too much. so they will continue to suppress the vote. so i can see why mitt romney might be a little bit more confident today than he was going up against the obama machine back in 2012. it's not necessary to fix the voting rights act.
2:07 pm
the voting rights act isn't going to get any attention. not by the republicans. romney, he's leading in the polls. a new poll has romney in the lead in iowa. jeb bush at 14%. scott walker at 10%. everyone will certainly be dusting off the old romney videotape, but you never know. a third time could be the charm and you can't convince me that the landscape is going to be the same and the competition is going to be the same. not to take a shot at hillary or any of her folks, but the fact is romney might have more mojo than what people think. how hard is he selling on these calls and how are these phone calls being received? does mitt romney have any chance of becoming president? text a for yes. text b for no. you can always go to our blog. we'll bring you the results
2:08 pm
later on in the show. let me bring in the president of american bridge 21st century and a political reporter for "the boston globe." characterize what you think these conversations are sounding like. how hard is mitt romney selling? >> he's selling pretty hard. again, there's perception and then there's the reality here. in the perception, mitt romney wants people to understand he kind of wants to do this again. those who are very close to him they also feel that same way. whether or not they're playing some other game whether or not he's not maybe serious in the end, look i can't read his mind. but all the indications is he is very serious in getting in this race. >> does romney have a shot at the republican nomination? >> ed i think he does have a shot at the republican nomination. i think "the wall street"
2:09 pm
journal asked the wrong question. can he be a better candidate than he was in 2012? the question is can he be a better candidate than anyone else running for the republican nomination? i think he can probably make a case that he can be. i would say the other thing that these candidates need to look at that are thinking about running is are they ready for what mitt romney is prepared to do to them? because if he decides to get in, he'll take no prisoners. >> james, has mitt romney ever talked about poverty to the point where it has to be addressed by government? when he says he's going to run on an anti-poverty platform that tells me he thinks government has a role in dealing with poverty in this country. is this new? and you've covered him and the
2:10 pm
folks in massachusetts have covered him for years. >> yeah, look. in the one sense, you have never heard mitt romney go out there and make this a major point. it does remind me a lot of what paul ryan was saying when he was running for vice president, trying to bring up conservative jack kent principles in urban america. i don't know how much of that involves government assistance. maybe more government off the back. but i think there's going to be a bigpy pivot in american politics. you're seeing as opposed populist tendencyies coming out of hillary clinton. the question you asked brad was a good one. could mitt romney be the republican nominee? look for the next year before we have the first votes in iowa and new hampshire, we're in this
2:11 pm
period called the invisible primary. the only way you can figure out who is winning today or next month is on three different things which is polling, fundraise fundraising, and then sort of the organization, or the ground game. clearly there's no one in this field running for president right now in terms of the republican side who has close to what mitt romney does. >> his timing is good but his record is not invisible. the bottom line here is he never said anything about money being held offshore avoiding taxes. he's an outsourcer. i remember going to la port, illinois, doing a story on a very business that was outsourced. if the republicans are going to
2:12 pm
connect with the middle class, how are they going to reinvent mitt romney to be some kind of new candidate with his record? one >> i believe that it is just that. it is just a reinvention. it is a reinvention to try to you know, distract people from his 47% comments. it's a reinvention to try to distract people from his comment he's not concerned about the very poor. there are republicans and democrats who are genuinely concerned about the issue of income equality and wage stagnation. i don't believe mitt romney is one of those people. i think he needs to figure out what ailed him in the last campaign. >> who goes after romney in a debate? how tough is this going to get? are they going to go after him on his outsourcing record and not able to connect socially
2:13 pm
awkward sitting down saying you didn't make these cookies? this is rather amazing and yet he polls very well. james, you were with rand paul in new hampshire today. any mention of romney? >> oh absolutely. he thinks he's yesterday's news. i asked him specifically did he have any addvice for mitt romney. he said sure. he's not going to run again for president. it was time for a new face. what's interesting about this conversation is we're talking about this 2016 republican presidential nomination as a time when republicans might possibly rebrand themselves. what direction would they take? rand paul is a very fascinating figure when we talk about that rebranding. but now we're talking about --
2:14 pm
instead of a direction and new faces, a jeb bush and a mitt romney and, of course rand paul is not leaving aside any chances to hit both of them. >> and the people around him, are they making a mistake early on here, brad? if mitt romney was president, there wouldn't be any isis and vladimir putin would know his place in life. they're off to a hell of a start, aren't they? >> i understand their instinct to look at whatever is wrong with the obama record now and go to the primary and say, i was right on all these things. why would you trust anyone else to do this? i think his problem is the economy. look at what's happening now with the economy. for example, the unemployment rate has fallen much faster than mitt romney.
2:15 pm
>> he said obama didn't know anything about the economy. he was against the automobile loan. he said detroit should have gone bankrupt. i wonder if the chris christie's of the world and the walker's of the world are going to hold him accountable. thanks so much. remember to answer tonight's question there at the bottom of the screen. like us on facebook. we appreciate that. always want to know what you think. coming up the right wing puts more hate on president obama for his paris response. we'll bring you the latest on all that, but first ted cruz takes on a new role as guardian of the galaxy.

field. >> taking a dig at chris christie in the state of the state address last night. walker took a jab at the potential rival amid growing speculation that walker is seriously eyeing a 2016 presidential campaign. walker's 24-minute speech played it safe. light on details. there's no word on how republicans will address the 2.2 budget deficit in the state. however, walker did talk about school choice lower taxes, smaller government. in fact walker called for consolidation for a number of state agencies. >> we will consolidate several of our state agencies. while the mergers will provide the next state budget the real objective is to improve services while being better stewards of our taxpayers' money. we will have several consolidations within existing agencies as well as regulatory reforms. we want commonsense solutions, not bureaucratic red tape. >> yeah. that's called doing more with
2:55 pm
less. that's what they got from walker. walker can talk all he wants but his actions prove his focus is not on wisconsin. on tuesday morning, walker's offers canceled all events surrounding his state of the state tour. however, walker did manage to be at the meeting on wednesday night in san diego. while the media is focused on mitt romney or jeb bush, walker is laying the tracks for his own campaign. joining me tonight editor-in-chief of a magazine. walker is still going with a very radical agenda and he's attacking education in a big, big way. unpack it for us. >> yeah that's right. today there was very dramatic hearings all day long on this new bill the very first thing a republican legislature is doing, the first thing out of the box is to privatize our school system here in wisconsin and it's really unpopular with the
2:56 pm
people of wisconsin. they held education hearings today. we have a fantastic reporter there all day long following it moment by moment. one of the first things they did is they are not going to have any more public hearings but change up the bill and introduce a new version on friday. at the same time the school choice lobbyists who give more money to republicans than any other entity in the state, they are right up there with the coalition of all business interests, the lobbyists are sitting in the hearings accepting thanks for their work on creating this bill the bill was created without any input from the public and it's changed behind the public's back and it's a bill that ecerpts power and they may change that in the future versions that we won't have a chance to see. it punishes schools that serves kids that are not getting good grades and it turns them over to private entities. so somebody can make a profit off of those schools if they are not doing well. >> it sounds like walker is
2:57 pm
going to continue to be very radical but he's got wisconsin is the rear-view mirror. i mean he's thinking 2016. and he said that the wisconsin comeback is working. recent estimates project $824 million gap in the 2015 to 2017 budget. how's he going to get around that? that's red meat against him in any debate. >> that's absolutely right. you know, he as you point out, had very little substance in the state of the state. 24-minute speech and two policy proposals. that was it on policy. aside from endorsing the privatization of our schools. he touted lower property taxes. and the huge budget cuts particularly to schools, cuts to services are hurting people so much in this state. the picture from wisconsin
2:58 pm
doesn't look great but walker said freedom seven times in the last eight sentences. so they've arrested 300-plus protesters here in the capital. he's for free speech and talking to people about terrorism in france. he's not talking about what is happening to people in wisconsin. >> so he's third in the polls in iowa right now and spent quite a wit of time in iowa. he's been there a number of different times. but he's not in that bad of shape, is he? you have romney and jeb and walker. that's how it plays out in iowa right now. could he get it? could he get things rolling? >> i think it's possible you know. it's a funny process for republicans. you have to get through the primaries and so he can appeal to the base. he's very right wing and he presents himself -- he's a skilled politician. it would be foolish to underestimate him. he presents himself as
2:59 pm
reasonable and mainstream. maybe he's got the right package to get through and, if so america better watch out. take a look to what is happening to us here in wisconsin. >> okay. so he's going to get a number of radical groups behind him. there's no question about that. so to gain and continue that credibility, he's going to have to continue to present radical agendas in wisconsin, as i see it. and his proposals to merge the state agencies i mean that's just generic talk. you can get any republican to talk about that. but this guy actually the way he's going after labor, he would attack jobs again, wouldn't he? >> well the real concern is that wisconsin will become a right-to-work state which means total union busting, moving on from public employees to all employees. it's very telling that what they are starting with is attacking the public schools because that is really where the money is. and it's -- that is a loser with the public and a winner with their funders. >> ruth connif thank you.
3:00 pm
"politicsnation" is up next with reverend al sharpton. >> thanks for tuning in. i'm live from columbus ohio. we start with two breaking news stories tonight on terror. one here at home and one abroad. first, a plot to attack the united states capital. federal authorities have filed charges against an ohio man who wanted to plant pipe bombs at the u.s. capitol and then lie in wait to shoot employees as they came out of the building. the man's name is christopher cornell. he was reportedly seeking an alliance with the
