we'll have their reaction for you. this is "way too early." hey everybody. good morning. i'm thomas roberts. it is thursday january 15th. welcome to wait wait the show that feels mission accomplished when we say. >> good morning! >> good morning. we have several different languages. so we are very accomplished today. it is great to have you with us. we want to get straight to our top story this morning. we begin on capitol hill where there are new concerns about home grown tafr richl after authorities say they thwarted a terror plot against one of the country's most iconic buildings. an ohio man is facing charges for allegedly plotting a military-style attack on the capitol. officials say he was inspired by islamic state militants and anwar al al lack ka ki. this is the man in custody, 20-year-old christopher lee

cornell. court documents state he wanted to plant pipe bombs around the capitol and shoot officials who tried running away. investigators say he came to their attention last august when he used an alias to post pro-isis messages to twitter. court documents also say he discussed his plans with a man that he thought was sympathetic. the man was actually working under cover for the fbi. officials say cornell was arrested after he bought two semi-automatic rifles and about 600 rounds of ammunition at a gun range. the fbi says the public was never in any danger. cornell's father says his son did recently convert to islam but can't believe what he's being accused of. >> people that really know chris, they know he's a good guy. like i said you know i was completely blind-sided by this. this came as a complete surprise.

chris is -- he never leaves the house. he's a mommy's boy. he never showed any signs of any kind of violence or anything. quiet, shy, good kid. >> so this comes just one day after another man in ohio was arrested for allegedly plotting to poison house speaker john boehner. now to france where police may be on the verge of a big break in their investigation into the paris terror attacks. police confirm that am dee queue bali rented a small home and filled it with weapons a week before his siege. a scooter was found that could identify a possible accomplice. there's also new security footage from inside that grocery store. the gunman can be seen ordering a hostage to put his hands against a wall. and in another image a worker is forced to stand on a stool to disable a camera. meanwhile, since last week's attack, france has arrested more than 50 people after prosecutors

ordered a crackdown on hate speech anti-semitism and individuals supporting terrorism. it comes as the first issue of "charlie hebdo" since the massacre sold out across france within hours. the paper is so sought after that copies are going for more than $1,000 on ebay. french president francois hollande saying the magazine is being reborn. france's president is also increasing his country's efforts to defeat islamic state militants in the wake of the paris terror attacks. the country is deploying an aircraft carrier to the middle east that will conduct air strikes against isis and iraq and gather intelligence that france was the first country, you'll recall to join the u.s.-led coalition against the islamic state. this comes as iraqi officials say the coalition is not doing enough to combat isis militants. the "wall street journal" reports there are also new concerns about president obama's

strategy in syria. u.s. and independent assessments show isis has seized even more territory there despite more than three months of air strikes. the secret service is undergoing a massive changing of the guard at the very top with six of eight top officers leaving. already julie pierson, the agency's first woman in charge stepped down back in october. now four of the agency's assistant directors are being forced out and two others are retiring. "the washington post" was first to report that the departures follow a series of security lapses. in november, a security contractor with an arrest record road in an elevator with the president in atlanta while carrying a gun. in the same month, an iraq war vet with a knife was able to climb the fence at the white house making it into the white house before being subdued by an off-duty agent because a number of security precautions failed. on a different note experts describing this as the most

difficult free climb in the world, the almost completely vertical 3,000 foot dawn wall of el capitan at yosemite national park and yesterday two men found out what it meant to reach the time. 19 days up the 3,000 foot granite fashion, tommy caldwell and kevin jorgensen reached the summit. greeted by dozens of loved ones, the two celebrated by becoming the first two in history to scale the dawn wall using only their hands and feet to pull them up. caldwell and jorgensen started their journey on december 27th with no climbing equipment besides harnesses in ropes in case of falls. each night they ate and slept in hanging tents thousands of feet above the valley floor. for a little perspective, the half mile stretch of granite they climbed is about as tall as two empire state buildings stacked on top of each other. president obama offered his

congratulations with this picture from instagram. the caption reads in part quote, you mind us that anything is possile. jen, while they're hanging, sleemg on the side of a building and you're watching the real housewives and going to the supermarket, these guys are climbing the side of el capitan. congratulations to them. there's nothing quite like cleveland in the summer. the republican national committee announced their presidential convention dates for 2016. they're going to be in july about six weeks earlier than 2012. party chair rins preeb business announced it to help them gain earlier access to general election funds. he's thought to strengthen the nominee by scaling back the number of debates as well. american's views on the economy are improving. it appears that president obama is getting some of the credit for that. according to a new pew poll 27% of americans rank it as

excellent or good. twice as many as last year with optimistic about its outlook. for the first time in five years, americans say the president's policies have made the economy stronger than weaker. a stark reality remains for many americans. more than half say they are falling behind the cost of living. as the president's state of the union approaches pew mapped the approval ratings compared to other presidents. based off of that we want to turn our attention to business news and wall street's continued slide for the stock market. it was the fourth straight day of losses with the dow down nearly 190 points. cnbc's geoff cutmore joins us from london. many on wall street reacting to remarkets by jpmorgan ceo jim meamie diamond. >> this is interesting. there are a lot of americans who

still believe the banks should be on the naughty step. jamie dimon basically said banks are still under assault from regulators and analysts and those in particular who said jpmorgan should be broken up and some of the big banks should still be split into smaller divisions, him saying effectively this shouldn't be the agenda right now. we need to focus on getting our banks healthy again. you might imagine jamie dimon would like to distract the marketplace a little because both profits and revenue down for the fourth quarter. they've set aside a billion dollars to deal with the prospect of more fines in the fx area for activities that took place around currencies. that's his line on the banks. i wonder how many americans will agree with that right now. let me move on because we have seen movement on the

dodd-frank legislation. this was rushed through in 2010. republicans say it is not fit for purpose, there are parts of it that should be amended. we did see the house here move on legislation which would start to ease back some of the pressure on the banking sectors to comply with its terms, particularly when it comes to the so-called volcker rule which means banks are not allowed to trade on their own accounts. it looks like at least that is one for the banks in terms of better news flow. but let me send it back to you on that right now, banks dominating the stories this morning. >> also news overnight, geoff, this big bankruptcy filing that made headlines overnight. what is it? >> an interesting one. this is see sarscaesars, it owes about $18.4 billion. they have come out and said they need chapter 11 time to deal with this debt.

"in touch" magazine facing criticism for their latest cover of bruce jenner which appears to be heavily photo shopped and his the headline "bruce's story, my life as a woman." they claim he will announce he's transgender in an upcoming issue

many college juniors want to head out into the real world early, but forget senior year marcus mariota, he is headed to the pros. that story and a check on weather when "way too early" comes right back. word arrived over the city wide fire frequency that a commercial jetliner was in the water with 155 people on board. then over the next few minutes the doors opened live vests were inflated and women and children nirsfirst, everyone got off that plane.

responsible for a december 1st attack on a female accuser. an attorney for mcnary denied the charges. the colts play new england for the afc title coming up on sunday. certainly serious accusations and charges there. a busy day in california's bay area. another pair of nfl teams filed their coaching voids. the san francisco 49ers have named long time defensive coach jim that sooul la as head coach. the oakland raiders reportedly hired broncos defensive coordinator jack del rio as their next coach. get this oregon quarterback, he's a duck marcus mariota is nfl bound. the heisman trophy winner announced on the school's website he's going to enter this year's draft. mariota led the ducks to the national championship game against ohio state and is projected as a top draft pick. he didn't win though. >> a lot of people are doubting here. all a sudden he has one not so

another woman stepped forward claiming bill cosby drugged and sexually abused her. the 24-year-old said the incident occurred during a party at the playboy mansion. her attorney says she blacked out after being drugged and when she awoke she was naked with cosby standing over her. the event allegedly occurred in 2008 which could fall under the statute of limitations in california. cosby's attorney has not commented on her allegations, but has denied all previous claims. cosby has never been charged with a crime. the u.s. has released five more gitmo detainees from yemen as part of an ongoing effort to close the controversial prison camp. one will be sent to estonia, the others to amman. all five were captured in

pakistan and detained for more than a dozen years as suspected al qaeda fighters. this comings as there's new legislation aimed at slowing the facility's closure, claiming 30% of released prisoners go on to rejoin the fight. the bill would put a two-year moratorium on the transfer of medium or high risk detainees and would ban transfers to yemen. last year president obama lifted the ban on transferring them back to yemen. 122 remain at the camp. 54 already approved for transfer 47 of whom are from yemen. the battle over immigration is also heating up with the latest move from the house exposing a divide within the gop. house republicans have voted to overturn the president's recent executive actions on immigration. so the measures were added to a broader bill to fund the department of homeland security. one amendment would undo the executive action scheduling some 4 million undocumented immigrants from deportation. the other reverse is a 2012

order protecting children brought here illegally. here is what both sides had to say on the house floor. >> we do not take this action lightly, but simply there is no alternative. there's not a dispute between the parties or even between the branches of our government. this executive over reach is an affront to the rule of law and to the constitution itself. >> we have a bill that should not be controversial, that should funneled our homeland security but has been turned into a divisive political strategy on immigration. madam speaker, let's face it this bill is not about homeland security. this bill is about republican political security. >> just to make a quick mention, we showed the wrong video going into this story of an wah al awlaki. ten republicans voted against the bill one of them california congressman jeff denim who said quote, if we were just

specifically dealing with the november overreach of the president, you'd have democrats voting with us on that piece of that. we're passing a bill for political reasons, a bill that has no ability to pass the senate. the white house accused republicans of undermining national security. pope francis is now on the second leg of his asia visit. he arrived in the philippines this morning home to asia's largest catholic population. millions are expected to attend public events over the course of his five-day visit, but a tropical storm forecasted could force changes to his schedule. the pontiff began his trip in sri lanka where he canonized the country's first catholic saint, visited a buddist temple and met with victims of sri lanka's 25-year civil war. pope francis is in asia hoping to increase the church's following on a continent with 60% of the world's population but only 12% catholic. coming up on "way too early," a look at the stories
