2:02 pm
senator mcconnell's perfect choice. first of all joanie earnest opposes a federal minimum wage across the board. she wants to privatize social security. she made all this clear in her debates. >> we have already talked about closing the door to the irs. i think that would be a wonderful start. let's close the door. let's scrap the tax code and again let's find something that's fairer, flatter, and simpler, but there are other departments that we could be looking at also. closing the doors to the department of education at the federal level and not just because it would save taxpayer dollars, but because i do believe that our children are better educated when it's coming from the state and the

localities. let's shut down the federal epa and focus on these issues here in the state where the state knows best how to protect its resources. >> here's more from the perfect choice. earnest said that she would have voted against the farm bill in the middle of the country. she called the clean water act damaging for business and of course earnest isn't schooled up on the science of climate change either. >> i don't know the science behind climate change. i can't say one way or another what is the direct impact from -- whether it is manmade or not. i have heard arguments from both sides, but i do believe in protecting our environment but without the job killing regulations that are coming out of the epa. >> just to clarify, you do accept that climate change does exist. >> i do believe our climate is changing, but i'm not sure what the impact of man is upon that climate change.
2:04 pm
>> so joanie earnest is another denier. she opposed same-sex marriage. earnest has called president obama a dictator and floated the idea of impeachment. >> yes, absolutely. he is overstepping his bounds, and i do think, yes, he should face those repercussions. as a u.s. senator, absolutely. >> the national rifle association has given earnest an "a" rating. earnest said that she would use a gun to defend herself from the government. >> i have a beautiful little smith & wesson 9 millimeter and it goes with me virtually everywhere, but i do believe in the right to carry and i believe in the right to defend myself and my family whether it is

from an intruder or from a government should they decide my rights no longer important. >> what's the bottom line here? joanie earnest being selected to respond makes a mockery of the state of the union. earnest chosen to respond is an absolute joke. americans, you know what we're looking for? solutions. the president wants free community college tuition. he wants to expand high-speed internet, even in rural america. he's going to talk about cuba tonight, immigration, and climate change. he will outline his new tax plan. americans are not looking for a partisan hack to degrade and dismiss the president of the united states. the country wants to congress to work with president obama. earnest is just another
2:06 pm
republican against everything the president wants to accomplish and on every issue. the best thing republicans can come up with a rookie senator from iowa? for mcconnell to select her is not what america is looking for. america wants you, mitch. mitch mcconnell or john boehner should be responding to the president tonight. this is a real opportunity to unite with the president and move the country forward. now whether the gop agrees with the president or not, it should come from leadership directly. people are going to be walking away from tonight thinking well, this is just more of the same. mitch mcconnell i think, is missing an opportunity to lead and i think it speaks volumes of what really their mission is. their mission is to defeat president obama. this selection of joanie earnest, when it first came out, i really thought it was a joke.
2:07 pm
i thought they were kidding. here are the republicans. they have not had both chambers the house and the senate for some six years. this is an opportunity for them to show the country that they are serious after all this obstruction. they're going to put the biggest obstructer right in front of the american people tonight. i think it is a bad move and the republicans are off to a bad foot nationally because the country is paying attention to this tonight. this is the biggest platform the president has every year. does joanie earnest have the authority to step out tonight after that state of the union speech and say, this is where we can work with the president, this is where we're going to have a problem? that's what the country wants. she won't offer any of that. i want to know what you think. tonight's question, is joanie earnest the perfect choice to deliver the republican response? text a for yes. text b for no. leave a comment on our blog on this.
2:08 pm
we'll bring you the results later on in the show. tonight there's going to be a big emphasis on the wage gap, which is something we have been talking about a lot. in fact, four six, nine. april 6th 2009 was my first show here on msnbc. i said at the time i want to focus on the middle class. i think the middle class in this country needs attention. it is the largest voting block in this country. disposable income is shrinking in this country. here we are six years later. we're talking with the president tonight about the middle class and what are the republicans going to do? they're going to put an obstructer up there? it's a fact. gentlemen, great to have both of you with us tonight. i love the president's focus tonight. senator, you first. you talk about it all the time. congressman, you have put out a
2:09 pm
proposal. what can the president accomplish tonight, senator? >> well what he can accomplish is making the very important point that despite huge republican obstructionism the economy today is much better than it was six years ago, but it is nowhere where we need it to be. highest rate of childhood poverty in the industrialized world. he needs to let the republicans say no. let them go back to their usual formula of more tax breaks for millionaires and cutting social security and medicare and let approximate the people decide. >> i think it is important because they now have both chambers. this is their legislative opportunity.
2:10 pm
>> it is to trivialize what the president is saying. we're not bringing forward our leadership to respond. >> your proposal and what you laid out last week is going to parallel what the president is going to talk about tonight. crucial to the middle class. what's the message tonight? >> it is important to recognize that the december jobs report did have lots of good news in it in terms of the recovery. i should say not a single republican in the house voted to make that recovery possible. it also had this wage issue. that's where the president is focused because we need an economy that works for all americans and we need to in incentivize higher pay. >> what's your reaction to the
2:11 pm
republicans putting joanie earnest up to respond to the president? it is almost like they are not serious about wanting to work with the president again. >> mitch mcconnell has said he wants to find practical, common sense steps he can take to work with the president. what he's saying tonight by picking this person is he was just kidding. he didn't mean it. her whole campaign was run on simply trying to roll back the progress that we have made over the last four years, so what it says to me is senator mcconnell really wasn't serious when he said he wanted to work together. if he was serious, he would have maybe put himself forward as the republican leader. don't we want to hear what the republicans stand for? >> senator, the white house is saying today that they feel like they are out of the crisis zone
2:12 pm
for the economy. it is going to be somewhat of a victory lap because the republicans have had no hand in this recovery whatsoever. 58 months of private sector job growth. you have 10 million jobs the recovery of the automobile industry. is it important for the republicans to engage for the next two years in the economy if we're going to continue this growth? >> absolutely it is. absolutely it is. we're beginning to see a few signs of it. for example, everybody in america knows a 7.25 minuteimum wage is a starvation wage. we have to raise the minimum wage. people are working as quote/unquote supervisors and not getting any overtime. clearly we have to change as well. clearly we need to rebuild a crumbling infrastructure. and we need to get rid of some of these outrageous loopholes. >> if the congress does not work
2:13 pm
with this president, what's the economic outlook? right now america has one of the better economies that's out there in the globe right now. the president is now siding with the republicans on the transpacific partnership. there are some democrats who are for for for it as well. how is the president going to make the case for the middle class and support a trade deal like this? >> republicans wanted to practice the austerity approach that today tookhey took in europe. we see where they got europe. the president is going to make the case how a trade agreement can help american workers.
2:14 pm
members of congress should look at it with two standards in mind. how is it going to help the american worker and how is it going to help the american economy? if it can't meet those tests, we shouldn't support it. currency manipulation is not part of this discussion, but it is something that really has put american workers back on their heels because other countries are able to change their currency in a way that makes it hard to export. >> the tea partiers are concerned about the sovereignty issue, about who is making rules if there are any irregularities that are going to be challenged. so can it be stopped? >> i think people are going to see what the president is going to present and then people are going to decide exactly how to move forward. the focus of tonight's speech is
2:15 pm
on the things that we are talking about here. helping the middle class, making sure we have a tax system that doesn't help people who make money off of money more than people who make money off of hard work. >> senator, do you agree with what the president is doing on his tax plan? >> i think it is a great step forward. we may take it a little bit differently. in terms of trade, i respectfully disagree with the president. i think nafta cafta, has been a disaster. >> 45% of the american people now say the economy is in pretty good shape. that's the best number in a decade. i kind of feel like the president has the wind at his back tonight. he'll speak with more creditability on the economy. liberals want the president to remind the republicans that they haven't had a hand in this.
2:16 pm
congressman, is it asking too much to be that direct? >> i think he'll talk about all the good news. let's tell them right now not a single republican in the house voted for the economic recovery bill not one voted for wall street reform. i hope the president somehow says it tonight. i'm not sure held. >> gentlemen thanks so much for your time tonight. appreciate you coming in. remember to answer tonight's question there at the bottom of the screen. we want to know what you think. coming up republicans are already attacking the social safety net. later, the president prepares to set the tone for his last two years in office. rapid response panel weighs in. stay with us. we're right back on "the ed show."
